RE: MD: MiniDisc Weekly News for 9 January 2000

2000-01-10 Thread Martin Schiff

Here's an amendment to your MP3 Track Mark trick. Get the (free) program
Unreal Player Max from http://www.303tek.com/. It will automatically insert
a delay of any number of seconds you choose between songs. I've found that 2
seconds works fine for my Sharp MD-R2 in sync mode to get it to insert a
track mark. I just connect it via Toslink to my pc and create a playlist in
the Unreal player, and play them.

2000-01-10 Thread Clinton, Martin

Hi everyone,

Wandering round the sales with the missus yesterday, we cut round the back
of Oxford Street through Great Marlborough Street. Halfway down I saw the
'MiniDisc.com' shop that was on the MDCP the other week. It was closed, but
looked quite flashy...and get this! Guess who's next door?? Sony Music's
offices!! Coincidence or not??

Re: MD: Hitachi DVD-RAM Camcorder

2000-01-10 Thread Graham Baker

No more info as yet, but IMHO, this is the way to go - hopefully new DVD
players will accept these DVD discs directly, although, with the plastic
case, it could be difficult
This is exactly what I was asking for in my MD-L post of Nov 11th:

why not develop a smaller DVD disc that would hold (say) an
hour of DV quality and would be about the same size as MD - and would play
back instantly in any DVD player with an adaptor (or maybe with no
adaptor?)

As much as I love MD, I do not want an MD camcorder

Just read a brief note on E-Town about this product shown at the CES.
The camcorder is supposed to record up to 2 hours of video on a 3 inch
DVD-RAM disc enclosed in a plastic case with a shutter, like MiniDisc.
Anybody have any more specifics, camcorder information, availability
 date, price, etc?

RE: MD: Comments wanted: Signal path integrity

2000-01-10 Thread Martin Schiff

Since your vinyls are analog recordings, there is a conversion from analog
to digital taking place in your receiver, but from that point on, there are
no more conversions until you play the CD you burned.

I'm curious if the signal is undergoing conversion to/from analogue at any
point. I know that it doesn't in the receiver, but I wonder about the mixer
in the soundcard. One promising sign is that as long as the record level is
at 100% in the mixer, the record level indicator readings in CoolEdit are
identical to those on the minidisc deck. I know that the SB Live isn't the
best card in the world for this kind of thing, but I've got to work with
what I've got at this point.

Any comments or thoughts are welcome.

This is the equipment I've got: Sony JE-510, Harman Kardon AVR-500 receiver
(optical and co-ax ins and outs), SB Live platinum, and a Yamaha burner. The
JE-510 has an optical feed to the AVR-500, which has a co-ax feed to the

with CoolEdit2000. After that's done I break it up into tracks at my leisure
and burn the files to a CDR.

Hmm What is the exact path of the audio signal from the turntable?
Is it:

Turntable - AVR-500 (internal conversion to Digital) - SBLive digital in?

In this case, there are several possibilities:
I don't know the AVR-500. but I suspect you can select the sampling
frequency. Set this frequency to 48 Khz in order to match the sampling
frequency of the SBLive!. If not, it will be resampled by the SBLive in
order to get 48kHz... and resampled again to get 44.1kHz by software.
Ie, if you select 44.1Khz, you get the following path:
  Turntable - AVR-500 A/D - 44.1Khz Signal - SBLive! digital in -
  Upsampler - 48Khz signal - software downsampler - 44.1Khz WAV!
If you select 48 kHz, you get the next path:
  Turntable - AVR-500 A/D - 48Khz Signal - SBLive! digital in -
  - software downsampler - 44.1Khz WAV
Ie, you have one step less. Thus a more accurate digital signal is
obtained!

Cheers,
Ralph

I did a little bit of research on this unit, heck for $79 it at least get's
you curious. Anyway here is what i found Minidisc.org says it uses an atrac
2 chipset which scares me a little bit, that means it's pretty old. when
trying to find the unit at sony it's not there nor anywhere else i could
find. I am also guessing that since this unit is that old and not on sony's
page any more it's been discontinued for quite some time. I would guess
these unit's were either sitting in a warehouse lost for quite some time or
they are refurb. in either case if you decide to get one definately check
to make sure there is any warantee on it at all. it would suck spending $79
then have the thing puke out on you 2 weeks after having it and having no
course of action to be able to get it repaired or your money back.
Personally i'd stay away from the unit it's not current at all.

Hi Basil,

the MIni DIsc World. Thank You. Basil Fakhry.

Okay, a few questions there! This may be useful to some other people who
are new, so I may as well answer them fully! Let's take them one at a time:

Q: What is a TOSLink transmitter/receiver connector?
A: This is basically an IC (chip) consisting of an LED (transmitter)
or a photodiode (receiver) and a driver, housed in a plastic casing
which accepts the TOSLink plugs which you find on the end of optical
cables. There are 3 pins sticking out of the bottom which you wire
up to +5V 0V (power) and the third is the TTL digital input/output
which takes the same format as S/PDIF (co-axial/RCA) except for the
fact that it works on 0V/5V (standard TTL digital levels) instead of
about +/- 500mV (S/PDIF).

Q: What do they do?
A: They convert from electrical to optical (transmitter) or optical to
electrical (receiver), depending on what's required.

Q: Do I need one of these TOSLink connectors if I have a sound card
that has an RCA digital output?
A: Yes you do if you want to connect to something which only has an
optical input (like an MD portable). You will also need a driver
circuit to convert the S/PDIF signal (+/- 500mV) to a TTL digital
signal (0V/5V). There are boxes around (about 35 to 50 UK pounds)
which will do this - I strongly suggest you buy one of these if you
aren't electronically minded and have never touched a soldering iron!
You could do a lot of damage to several things if you're not careful.

Q: Do I need a sound card with digital outputs to record digitally?
A: Well, yes. If you want to record digitally off your PC anyway. If you
just want to record CDs digitally, get yourself a CD player with an
optical output (eg. Technics 390/490/590 or Yamaha 493. In fact most
CD-players seem to have them these days).

Q: How can I get my MD to play in a car that only has a CD player? Is
there a way that I can connect my mini disc player to a CD player,
and make the music work?
A: Hmm...don't think you can. You can get adaptors which let you connect
anything with a line output to a tape machine in a car stereo - these
have an ordinary tape head mounted inside an empty tape casing, which
just converts the line output from your MD (or whatever) into a
magnetic field, which the head in the tape machine picks up, just like
reading an ordinary tape. This isn't possible (for obvious reasons, I
hope!!) with a CD player. The only way to do it would be if your
car CD player has an extra line input on the back somewhere, but I
wouldn't go fiddling if you're not sure what you're doing :-)

Hope this answers your questions :-)

Cheers,

Wrighty

P.S. UK is 230V +/-5% @ 50Hz - so is the rest of Europe and that's the way
it's staying. My multimeter says it's actually 238V at the moment, but
that's within the +/-5% tolerance. NOWHERE is moving UP to 250V - that
could cause problems with a lot of appliances which are only rated to work
at 240V, especially things with heating elements in...that's another topic
altogether - probably on alt.electrical.mains.voltages or something :-)

I recently bought a Soundblaster Live! PLayer 1024 soundcard...

Nope. On the back is a jack connector especially for a module, which is for
use with Minidisc.

Now the question is : is that an optical or a digital connection ?

It's TTL digital SPDIF, so you need the module (or a cheap DIY version).

Haven't tried it yet because i'm afraid i'll wreck my (precious) optical
cables..

Don't worry, it wont wreck them, it just plain wont work!

AND, in the software with the card is some stuff, especially for use with
MD...

Minidisc Centre - it's a bit grotty but it's workable.

Do i have to buy the daughterboard by hoontech or what ?

A what in the form of a module which plugs into that jack and gives you
a sort of "break out box" with optical and Coax connections. The more I look
at the card, the more I become convinced that Creative did this to try and
push people towards MP3 by creating a myth that special hardware is needed
to connect to MD. Unfortunately this seems to be working.
