That wont work with files where certain information is stored at the end of
the file, like AVI's (I believe) mp3's and the like it does work for as
well as most (but not all) video.

To John, who asked:
I have a question for Windoze gurus. Can I turn off file locking on
a file? On occasion, I'd love to start playing the files I record
before the recording is finished but the file is locked until the
recording is finished.

It's quite simple, really--I'm surprised you audiophile brainiacs didn't
help him with this one. You can't 'turn off' file locking, but just go
into explorer, right-click on the file currently being downloaded (it will
most likely show a size of 0 KB--click on properties to see how much has
downloaded so far, refresh the dir if needed too) and copy it to a
different directory. It will continue downloading the original file and
you can listen to whatever you downloaded so far, chopped at the point you
copied it. This works for most file types (*.rm, *.mov, *.viv), if not
all. Who says you can't learn anything from downloading porn? Gates is
the man.

OR, you could buy a Sony changer compatible head unit made by another

and some Prestige head units used Unilink as well. My girlfriend has a

Does anyone know which Prestige head units can control CD stackers using the
UniLink setup? This is because I know of someone who has recently installed
a Prestige P74 head unit and is starting to show interest in MiniDiscs and
there is also a Sony UniLink CD stacker that may be sold up because it is
without a head unit thanks to water damage caused by a car painter failing
to replace the windshield wiper seals.

Well as we're not downloading, we're recording, and that much extra hard
drive activity would probably cause the recording to become corrupted (hard
drive not keeping up with the incoming data) I would say you haven't really
learned anything!

Plus duplicating a file which may be up to 700Mb is probably a rather daft
way of listening to it and a waste of space anyway.

I've heard mention of a "silence plug-in" and have been looking for it on

digitally record to my aiwa AM-F70 I have to manually mark the tracks

does anyone know of a program or plugin for winamp that can insert blank
space between tracks on a playlist so tracks don't get recorded together?
it's a pain to go back and divide the tracks that are recorded together.

The more recent versions work a lot better - it used to play snippets of
the next track before the pause, doesn't any more. And you can switch off
the annoying system tray icon as well :)

MD: Panasonic SJ-MJ77

2000-05-18 Thread Leon

Hi again,

Right, sorry for two separate post, but I never saw this until I sent the
MZ-E800 stuff.

Panasonic has this very cool-looking replacement to the (old) MJ75 - the
SJ-MJ77. The official news release isn't even out yet, but have a look:
http://www.jij.co.jp/product/00-05-18/panasonic000518.html

Just for the sake of it, this is the new smallest/lightest MD portable.
71,5x78.5x12.7mm , 60g (not including batteries).

Smart-change mechanism: even if you don't push the disc all the way in,
it'll be drawn in when you close the lid. Upon sliding the open knob, it
functions like Sony's one-touch eject.

31000 yen, available in silver, blue, gray and red. launches on June 1.

MD: Sony's new MD walkman

2000-05-18 Thread Leon

Hi all,

Thought I'd drop a note on what I read here:
http://www.sony.co.jp/sd/CorporateCruise/Press/25/00-0518/

Sony MZ-E800 (open price, launches on June 10)
- new Walkman logo
- new foldable recharging stand (can also be used in cars)
- head-loading mechanism (functions like that of the EP10/11, but Sony says
this is a new design)
- seamless body (virtually 1-piece shell)
- LCD on unit
- 24 hours' playback on rechargeable battery (same ol' NH-14WM)

79.5x76.7x17mm, or
80.5x77.5x20.0mm including projecting parts

Newly released - rotary commander for in-car use (RM-WMC1; MSRP 3000 yen).

I personally think this is one of Sony's best designs in recent years. Come
on - if anyone remembers the WM-EX1... the MZ-E77 would be almost laughable.

MD: end search again and again

2000-05-18 Thread Jim Gray

We wouldn't be arguing about end search if Gaz would stop trying to
defend something so stupid, useless, and ergonomically idiotic, not to
mention destructive. I don't understand why he does this, unless he
just likes calling people stupid and arguing with them.

But more importantly: does anyone at Sony even KNOW how much people hate
it, or are we all making a lot of noise in the wilderness? Does anyone
here know anyone at Sony who could be contacted about this? Is there
any way to find out if Sony realizes that this feature is so unpopular?
IF not, they'll just keep adding it to every new unit from now on!

Gaz is OK - he has his own point of view, it's just different from most
other peoples, although there are others on the list who also favour an end
search button (not me..:-) )

Sony do tune in to this list - I know this for a fact but I don't know just
how much influence they have on the design areas.
Best thing would be to sign Rick's petition and maybe Sony will act on it.
Maybe the petition should include other features to be considered eg:
adjustable manual record levels whilst recording?
It doesn't worry me at all - I'm very happy with my Sharp 701 - it already
has these features (and more)

Sorry about wasting bandwidth.

The color variations for the MJ77 are:

Note the earbuds also look slightly different. Might be the cheaper kind
(the kind with the mock-diamond glittery bit).

I was hoping to do a brief review of the Kenwood DMC-L5, but I think it's
getting too close to the end of its life cycle for a full-blown review. If

cheap), feel free to e-mail me.

there is an undocumented +12 volt trigger output on the RM-X69RF

I am using this wire successfully in my installation. I have a classic 1965

Inside the radio, I have a 12VDC DPDT relay controlled by the RMX69RF's
"trigger" output that switches the audio. Works great!
