MD: DVD to MD? Chapter marks / breaks?
I currently have my DVD player (Samsung 709) hooked up to my minidisc bookshelf (Sharp MD-X5H) in my bedroom, using the coaxial digital out on the DVD player, and the coax digitial in on my bookshelf. I use this as an audio amp, and also to record the audio from DVDs to MD (have at least an hour each-way commute in the car, and find recording certain DVDs that are conducive to audio recording, an interesting way of passing the time). In the audio properties / setup on my DVD player it's set to PCM (there's only two options - this or bitstream, and bitstream just results in noise on my bookshelf). When I'm recording to MD, I have no issues acquiring the digital source, and can record digitally just fine. But I was sort of expecting the chapters to be brought across as track marks, but this doesn't happen. In the main, I get one big track - which I can then split up, if I want, manually. I think some of my recordings have the odd track mark in, but I think these are only the ones with the odd silent pause. On my Sharp, the automark functionality is redundant, when recording digitally, I think it may put track marks for length silences, but I was wondering about the chapter points. If anybody else does this sort of thing, do you get chapter marks? And can anyone think of a reason why this would / wouldn't happen, or if there's something I'm missing that would be stopping this. Re: MD: CD to MD
I have a Sony. They have a bunch of models. In the US your choices may be limited. In Japan they have at least a half dozen models. Panasonic also makes one them. I'm sure that there are other manufactures also. They cost about $150 to $200. Re: MD: Need MD player recommendation
Yesterday evening, I've look everywhere to find a MD player for your father needs... The only one that was really with big control and easy remote and button was a Panasonic model... But the price is really expensive : $300 US and more ! Personally, my favorite one, and the easiest portable unit with big button, easy to use, very strong (the best portable unit for me ever that I use everyday since last year) is the Sharp MD-MS722. But, be careful, don't buy from anyone, a lot are refurbished and sometime refurbished mean unit with weakness and repair after. But when someting is weak at start, it's weak forever !!! Like we say in french : Never buy a "citron" (lemon), you'll regret all your life ! Hope this will help... Pierre Forest, Kheops Minidisc. Most minidisc recorders only mark tracks when they register a couple of seconds silence (the actual amount needed before a track will be marked differs from model to model..), as far as I know (which isn't very far..) the DVD 'chapter' signals/codes/whatever wouldn't even get sent to the MD, let alone be understood by it.. Feel free to correct me, anyone, if I'm totally wrong... I guess the answer is - I don't know. *But* - isn't there always a "But...", I'd expect if I played a CD on my DVD player, and recorded from the digital out, to my bookshelf unit, I would have expected the track marks to be recorded correctly - it being a digital recording. I was just sort of wondering / speculating as to whether the chapters on a DVD would be treated in the same way for digital recordings. I guess my underlying rationale being that when I play a CD on my DVD player, you use the same controls to skip tracks, that you would skip chapters whilst playing a DVD. Over-simplistic logic I accept, and I'm not saying you should base the conclusion on anything as speculative as that, I guess I was just expecting much the same when digitally recording DVDs. At 5/25/00 7:38 PM, Stainless Steel Rat increased the world's knowledge by typing: Never was. For its day it was the smallest, but that is the extent of its superiority. If you want something in the same general class, the MZ-R90/91 is superior in every respect. That's BS. Here's a list of areas where the R50 is superior to the R90/91: -- The R50 can be charged while playing or recording. The R90 cannot. -- The remote on the R90 does not have a track mark button. The R50 does. -- The R50 had a thumb wheel. The R90 has a jog lever. I definitely prefer the thumb wheel when creating titles. -- The R90 is MUCH more sluggish than the R50 in startup and track seek times. (R90 Startup = 8 sec. R50 Startup = 2 sec.) -- The placement and shape of the main buttons (Play, Stop, FFwd, and Rwnd) on the R50 is much better than those of the R90. -- The track mark placement on the R90 is less precise than the R50. I'm not saying that the R90 doesn't have any improvements over the R50, because it does. Unfortunately, it also takes some steps backwards over the R50. But both of them (still!) have that stupid End Search button. So this means that my next recorder purchase will NOT be a Sony of any model.
