speaking as someone who does not own a cdr burner for his computer,
I consider them to be totally worthless.

I tend to agree and disagree.

On one hand, you have 650MB worth of storage space for your MP3s...not
bad, considering the limited amount of memory in most MP3 players.

On the other hand, the reason I don't burn CDs and take them with me is
the size. It's one of the 2 reasons I went ahead and bought my MD
recorder/player. CD Walkman units are just too big. I couldn't fit one
in my pocket unless I wore "cargo pants" all the time.

I'll stick with my MDs for portability, and CDs for the home changer...

Re: MD: mp3 discmans

2000-06-26 Thread Greg Conquest

So, does SONY produce this? I know of a Genica and a MamboX and a
couple of
others, but they're all 1st generation players that don't display
anything
other than numbers on the tiny LCD. I'll be happy when
SONY/AIWA/Panasonic,
etc start producing quality mp3 CD players that support standard mp3's,
RANTnot that SMDI stuff (I won't pay to have my music choices
limited.)
Though I think *we* do have to come up with something to give bands
money
for their music. We just don't need the record companies anymore
/RANT.

And they will be very useful. Many of us will be able to carry 11 hours
per
CD-R of our favorite music with us. You can listen on the train, etc.
Or,
going to a party? They got a stereo with AUX input? Take along a mp3 CD
player and a dance CD, latest hits CD, alternative CD, etc. You'll have
all
the music they could want.

MD: Sony wired joystick remote installation.

2000-06-26 Thread Ed . Wong

Does anyone have experience of installing this kind of remote ?
(..or can point me in the right direction).

I'm interested how it is affixed to the steering column for example.
Does it require modification of the dashboard ?

Assuming you dont have one as its kinda obvious

The remote plugs into the head unit in the back via a 1/8 "stereo" mini plug
type connection.

The "joystick" is not that large.

I put mine down near the edge of the shifter console.
No - I cant see it at all, but thats the point. I change
settings/volume/track/disk etc all by feel.

There are two ways to attach it.
The unit that I have (the 1st generatuion one) had a base plage
you could double stick tape the base plae or you could use
the tiny screws.
There is the capability to drill a hole in the base plate to hide the wire.

So, you have all the drawbacks of treating a CD as a portable media --
which it is not -- combined with all the drawbacks of MPEG 1 Layer III
audio, all in one unit. Plus you need a $500 computer and a $300 CD-R/W
burner in addition to the combo player, instead of a $150 CD player.

Please excuse me, but I have a difficult time seeing this as an improvement.

Re: MD: Street prices for MZ-E800 and MZ-E77 in Japan or HK

2000-06-26 Thread Leon

I did a couple searches online, using Japanese search engines.

MZ-E800 sells for 23700 (Sawada Denki, domestic mail order). A lot of places
don't have this one available yet.

Meanwhile, the MJ77 sells for 21500 online (hat-in), compared to the MJ75
going for as low as 15800.

I remember reading on some Japanese forums that the MJ77 was delivered late.
Matsushita didn't promptly ship them on the promised dates. Don't know if
it's the same with the E800. Big retailers like Yodobashi Camera doesn't
offer either yet.

Leon

Does anybody know the current street prices for the MZ-E800 and the MZ-E77 in
Japan or HK? These newer players should be a little cheaper since they have
"open price" which encourages price competition.
