Re: MD: Digital CD-MD-Amp passthrough
Simon Gardner wrote: Hi Leo, My problem is that my Sony CD megachanger has a pretty bad DAC and sounds a lot better when connected to my Amp via an optical cable. If I get an MD deck I want to connect the CD changer to it in the same way to get digital-quality MD copies, but the changer only has one optical/digital output. I guess I need to get an MD deck that has optical input and output and is able to act as a passthrough so the CD's optical output can reach the amp via the MD deck. Not necessarily - you could get one of the little digital convertor boxes. Providing it keeps both of it's outputs on you could, for example, have the optical coming in from your CD player, send an electrical signal to your MD deck and an optical signal to your amp. The Midiman CO2 from Core Sound looks ideal: Last time I was in Rat Shack I noticed that they're offering a TOSlink "Y" splitter. This should do the job. About $15 as I recall. MD: Found 10 m TOSLink cables!
Hi again! Regarding long TOSLink cables... I found a company called OptiCompo (http://www.opticompo.com) located in Germany which carries TOSLink cables at good prices. A 10 m cable cost me DM 75,- including shipping, which is pretty OK. Just thought that you wanted to know. Also, a big thanks to all of you who responded to me privately on this issue. MD: Aiwa AM-F5 problem
After a couple of years of good service my trusty AM-F5 seems to have packed up. When you put a disc in it makes rhythmic clicking for a while, and never quite manages to read the toc. Does that sound like my optical block has come unaligned or something else. Oh and on the other topic - i very much doubt that the digital in on my je520 is being put throught an atrac cycle before being put back out. My reasoning is this - the output stage would be the last stage of processing. So if the digital output has been atrac'd so would the analog output. And the analog output is very nice indeed so it hasn't been atrac'd (I've been known to use the je520 as an offboard dac for my cd player cos it's dac is nicer than the dac in my (also quite expensive) cd player). MD: 520 optical ATRAC
It looks like the optical in DIN0, DIN1 go into the ATRAC chip and the Optical out DOUT comes out of it. http://minidisc.org/je520_service/46.html http://minidisc.org/je520_service/47.html Andrew Grafham wrote: Oh and on the other topic - i very much doubt that the digital in on my je520 is being put throught an atrac cycle before being put back out. Re: MD: Digital CD-MD-Amp passthrough
I think you could do a simple test to determine if your MD unit is passing an unaltered digital signal or not, assuming you have DTS capability. Put a DTS CD in your CD player, pass the signal through your MD recorder, then attempt to decode the DTS signal after it's been through the MD unit. If it works, you're getting a pure signal. If it doesn't, you're not. (Haven't tried this yet myself.) - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: MD: Aiwa AM-F5 problem
You've probably already tried this, but maybe the lens is just dirty and needs cleaning with one of the cleaning MDs you can buy in most shops? Whatever the problem is, good luck! My second Sony discman did something similar a few months ago -- when trying to play most CDs it would say "no disc" unless the unit was shaken while it started to play (seriously!). I tried a cleaning CD (and I had to shake the unit to get that to play, too, heh), but no luck. (For some reason it played one of my CDs fine, though.) The complete unreliability of portable CD players is what ultimately made me jump to MD for portable audio, despite being quite anti-MD at the time. I didn't like the idea of lossy compression and I hated (and still do :-)) having to spent time in advance recording my CDs to MD. But if the damn players were going to break ever six months, MD was a much better option. (And the players are a lot more portable, too.) (That said, I bought another discman, almost identical to the old one, to use as a decidated digital-output CD-MD device. :-) (And to play a new CD which came out while I was in another country with only my MD player, heh)) Cheers, Leo -- - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MD: Strange R50 behaviour???
This may sound like a weird question, but I'm curious to see if anybody else has experienced this, or if my ears are just off. I've got an MZ-R50 that is about a year and a half old, and works like a charm. Is it possible for it to slow down or or adjust pitch? If this was a tape player, I'd understand that if the batteries are low, the motor won't turn as fast, and thus a slowdown... This is digital, the battery is fully charged, but I swear it was running "slow" possibility: my ears are just way off this morning... any thoughts (besides that I'm crazy) thanks -Jeffrey - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

MD: emailing bird song recordings
Hello, I am engaged in a research project involving recording bird vocalizations. I need to be able to email these recordings. I have a Sony MZ-R90 MD and a HP Omnibook 2000 laptop computer with a sound card. Can someone tell me how I can find out what is needed to get the recordings into my laptop and then to email them? Re: MD: emailing bird song recordings
connect the line out or earphne jack, line out would be better, on the R90 to the line In on the sound card. open volume control, under START/Programs/Entertainment/volume control click on options menu and then properties. under adjust volume for... check recording, make sure Line-In is checked, click OK click on Select for the Line IN volume control ... Now open windows Sound Recorder under START/Programs/Entertainment/sound recorder and record the sound with it. save it with the name you want and email it.
