MD: MD for recording sound for film?
I have been in film and tv production sound for over 30 yrs. and although I've use DATs and 8trk. hard disk exclusively for several years, I have often used MD as a backup on smaller projects. I have used them with no failures to date for both recording and set playback. I do place SMPTE Time Code on one trk. and a program mix on the other. Since the vast majority of camera setups involve the use of a single boom mic, generally single track is OK. I have never personally had a situation where the back up was needed but do know of it being used on other shows with perfectly acceptable results- the backup being certainly better than no track at all! Don't forget two things: 1) the final product will have music, snd. effects etc. mixed in and by the time all is said and done virtually any recording medium will work. 2) Few if any speaker systems use in film reproduction (much less the listeners who hear this stuff) would ever be able to tell the difference between recordings made with the current 16/24 bit prof. recorders digital we use and a MD recording. Most people even with well trained hearing, need headphones to really ear the difference and it has to be a pristine music track at that. This is especially true in the freq. range of the human voice that we dialog mixers work with. Most of the arguments I've heard regarding MD are purely academic and serve no useful purpose in the real (or reel) world. It really all gets down to MIC PLACEMENT in the end. As far as "sounding like shit that..." the original post referred to, that is utter nonsense. A well mic'd shot using the proper mic for that particular set-up will sound just great. Granted MD is not going to sound as good as a 96/128k/48bit professional unit but it is an excellent recording medium for anyone making a film on a tight budget or where getting an HHB or Fostek portable time code DAT unit is not feasible. And MD is a excellent choice for radio broadcast. Again, I can't stress enough that mic choice and placement are the absolute paramount (no pun intended) concerns for production sound recording. With millions of $$$ of the best recording equipment in the world, your tracks will still sound like shit if the mic is in the wrong place! I hope this helps in your choice. Cheers, DK - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well, if you have a true line in on the other end, the impedance is high, which causes the built-in amp to cut out. Then you set the volume to maximum and you have a line out. Maybe that is why the instructions say to play it at 30 (max volume) when playing back through an amp. By the way, after reading through the posts on this topic, I have to qualify my comments. First, what I was describing was on playback (the recordings having been made on either the MT-15 or the Sony MXD-D3). Second, what I was describing was a seeming lack of highs...but in no way did I think that the playback sounded bad...maybe in some cases a little muddy from the lack of high frequencies...but still decent. Third, and I know you'll jump all over this, most - not all - of my listening was in the car. That, obviously, could account for this...except that CDs in played back on my Aiwa CD deck - when it works - don't suffer from a lack of highs. I think that Sharp ATRAC does sound different from Sony's, but I do not categorize it as bad sounding. I think, perhaps, that Sony's is more consistent with my tastes. Now if I could ever - just once - own a piece of Sony equipment that worked properly. James __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! MD: RF Car MD Changer?
Hi all, Does anyone know if such a thing exists? I recently purchased one of the new Acura SUVs, the MDX, and the factory stereo is very much tied to the whole functionality and asthetics of the dashboard. The factory cassette/cd in dash player is double-sized, and there are controls mounted on the steering wheel. I don't want to change the appearance of the dash or lose the functionality of the steering whell controls, but for the last two years I have been anticipating installing an MD player in the new vehicle I knew I would purchase. Now that I bought this new fancy ride, it's killing me that I won't be able to have the MD option in it. There are plenty of CD RF (radio frequency) changers--you know, the kind that you tune in to on an unused frequency of your factory radio. But I haven't been able to find any evidence that MD RF changers exist. And if they don't, does anyone know of any plans for one in the future? How about some other workaround besides a portable MD player and a cassette adapter? Thanks in advance, John _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Do you have a good interconnect cable? Do you have good solder connections on your deck's line in? Is it really a line in with high impedance? Are you certain that there is no preprocessing going on between the line in and the amplifier? Did you turn off bass boost on the MD player and set the volume to maximum? If you have some test gear or know someone who does, check the impedance on the socket on the deck. It might not be high enough to cause the Sharp player to cut over to line out. -- Rat [EMAIL PROTECTED]\ Do not taunt Happy Fun Ball. Re: MD: atrac3
correct me if i'm wrong but dont you already have to have an emd device os some sort so you have openmg jukebox? i'm looking for an atrac encoder and a player for my computer. i could care about a portable device, i'm getting sick of mp3's they sound like crap. i'm looking for a way to archive my cd collection without total loss, and to be honest i'm too lazy to record close to 1k cd's to minidisc. mp3 would be nice if i didn't hate how it sounds. i'm looking into wma and some other formats, but i want it easily usable and available instead of having to buy a sony mem stick thing. Check out www.etree.org , the .SHN (Shorten) format is lossless compression, and can be played in winamp (with a plugin). Not sure what the compression ratio is. Re: MD: md-l-digest V2 #812
I was always under the impression that if you turned the Sharp volume up to 30 the bass boost would cut off anyway. I've played Sharps at 30 with bass boost set to 0,1,2,3 and not noticed any difference. Someone on this list mentioned that the bass boost attenuates significantly beyond volume 25. I'd say that by volume 30 the signal is just the same with or without boost. It's a shame that Sharps sense the impedence of the line out cable and yet you still need to set the volume to max. Couldn't they automatically set the volume to max (well, line level) anyway? I know the Sony's don't either (or does the MZR900 do it?). dave - Original Message - If you have some test gear or know someone who does, check the impedance on the socket on the deck. MD: Sharp MD-R60 reviews?
Hello. Are there any reviews on the web of Sharp's MD-R60? At less than $190 on minidisco, and with a respectable 7 hours playback on 1 AA battery, I'm curious to know about any flaws the unit has... The MD-SR60 is the same unit as the Japanese MD-MT50. From the looks of it, what it has over the MD-MS722 is it is slimmer and it uses a single battery compartment for both the NiMH cell (not included) and alkaline AA cells. IOW, it appears to be a competitor to Sony's MZ-R70.
