MD: Lens Cleaners
Hi all, I'm wondering if it is worth while to invest in a lens cleaner. Most of them claim to inprove the playback and recording quality. Has anyone tried using any type of lens cleaner disk? Do they work? OO OO OO OOOO OO OO OO OO OO OO OOOO OO OO OO OO OO OO OOOO OO OO OO OO OO OO OOOO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OO OOOO OO OO OO OO _ Get more from the Web. Hello I will be the first of many to say "DO NOT USE A LENS CLEANER!!!" The lenses on MD players are made from plastic and get scratched by lens cleaners. The best way to clean a dirty lens in my opinion is a cotton bud and some good quality cleaning fluid. lens cleaners. The best way to clean a dirty lens in my opinion is a cotton bud and some good quality cleaning fluid. All the best Ian Ive always heard everyone say that the lens cleaners would scratch the lens but looking at one I bought it looks harmless. Only like a few soft bristles to wipe off surface dirt. a cotton bud looks as though it would do more damage. I have always used cotton buts to clean tape heads and old CD units but if you are using a MD deck how to you clean the lens would you have to stick the cotton but in the slot and hope for the best or unscrew the cover off the MD Unit to gain access to the lens. I thought maybe I should just get an American battery charger (wall wart(. I don't have it here but it is probably the standard gum pack battery. Will this damage the battery? Is it worth getting a converter? Yes, get a converter. Pushing 120 volts through the wall wart may not kill anything immediately, but it WILL cause damage. Also, is there anywhere I can find translated instructions? My manual had English instructions in the last 1/3rd or so. There weren't any pictures there because you're supposed to look in the Japanese section for the pictures. === MIME part removed : text/html; === - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I bought an extra battery and charger from Planet MiniDisc http://www.planetminidisc.com/. If you search for NH-14WM you will see a list of several items, including the battery (NH-14WM) and the charger (Sony's part number BC-7HT). FWIW, I'm very impressed with the battery charger. It's quicker than charging the battery internally and it's very compact and slick. HTH. Ed "What the" Heckman [EMAIL PROTECTED] +--+ | The 10 Cannot-ments: | | 1. Also, the tape itself can get touched with dirty, sweaty, peanut butter and jelly fingers because it isn't covered when the tape cassette is out of the machine. Those are some of the reasons you need to clean a tape head. They don't usually apply to a minidisc because the MD has a cover over the media and the head shouln't be touching the disc. The only thing that might get in there is some lint from your pocket. I say don't clean it unless it doesn't work right. Leave the lens cleaners on the shelf at the store. IMHO of course. -- Jim Coon Not just another pretty mandolin picker. mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] If Gibson made cars, would they sound so sweet? MD: 702 problemo
I was preparing for a concert last night and kept getting an error on my sharp 702: DEFECT, can't record. I looked in the manual and it says that this means there's something wrong with the minidisc itself, but this cannot be the case since I tried 6 different md's in the 702. So, is there a simple fix for this or am I going to have to buy a new recorder? It will still play md's it just won't record them. I checked the power, the mics, tried using the optical input, etc. and concluded it has to be a problem with the 702 itself. I'm leaning toward just getting a new, more dependable recorder (having read about other problems with the 702). I would like to get one that has bigger buttons like the 702 though. I've looked at some sony's before and the buttons were so small that I don't see how anyone could use them. Maybe a newer sharp is the way to go?? Where's a good place to buy? thanks, matt - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bryan wrote : I have always used cotton buts to clean tape heads and old CD units but if you are using a MD deck how to you clean the lens Lens cleaning only needs to be done in dire circumstances - as Jim said, for the most part dust and grot and stuff should never come into contact with the lens. When a lens needs cleaning, often other things will need cleaning too, so take off the cover and give it an overhaul. (as long as you know what you're doing of course :o) ) All the best Ian === Ian Horsey Consultant in Obvious Generalities http://www.btinternet.com/~ighorsey __ Do You Yahoo!? This, as Rat says, is one of the only times you should use a lens cleaner IMHO. Stainless Steel Rat wrote: * "Matthew J. RE: MD: Lens Cleaners
BUT ... in the case of a car stereo where it is wedged into a dashboard (!) and you couldn't be bothered going through the laborious task of getting it out, it is fine, so long as you use the Sony branded cleaner. I used one last week to sort out my problem with my 8900 constantly spitting out Sony MDs and a few TDK MDs. Problem solved, TOC is read quicker than ever.
