MD: Aiwa FM80
Hello folks I'm looking at buying an Aiwa FM-80 sometime this week. Some reviews on the Net indicate its a great MD recorder, but others report problems. I know that in terms of features its much more feature packed than the Sony MZR70, but at a similar price is it worth choosing the Aiwa over the Sony? MD: Portable MD with Big Display?
I'm looking for a portable minidisc recorder that has a fairly large display. It's for someone who liked my Sharp 831, but whose eyes are a little older than mine, and who found the display too tiny to read easily (the 831 display is about 1 inch square). I guess it would also be OK if the display is no bigger, but the words and icons are a bit larger than on my 831. Does anyone have any suggestions? It's OK if the minidisc recorder itself is bigger than the 831, and I have no preference as far as brand is concerned. But it must record. MD: AKG lavalier mic and Sony MZ-R55 problems
Hello MD gurus, I'm new in the MD world and want to use my MD for analog recordings. The idea is to use a lavalier mic and record a voice from a close distance. I tried an AKG C417 mic with external power supply (AKG B29). I use it together with a Sony MZ-R55 but ran into some problems. http://www.akg-acoustics.com/english/microphones/micromic.htm#c417 The mic is kind of dead if I use the mic or line in port. But the microphone works fine if I first plug it in the line-in port and then when the MD is powered on, switch to the mic port... The R55 is not my MD and I will get a Sony MZ-R91 in a couple of weeks. Do you think I will have the same problem with the R91 or do you guys have a solution for my problem? MD: How times change.
Hi everyone, I know this may not be a piece of particularly useful information in the days of R900's etc., but in Curry's (a large chain of electrical shops here in the UK) in Beckton, East London, they are selling Sony LIP-12 batteries for £5 (about $7.50). Now I know that these days its only the Sony R30 and Kenwood G7 (or something like that) owners that this would interest. But considering that these batteries were going for about TEN times that price a few years ago, I was just a bit surprised. I am sorry Dave, but I don't think Sony currently sells a MD data deck. It is my understanding that they used to sell them but they were very slow and have been discontinued for years. So, if you want to store digital computer data to a minidisc, you will most likely be using modern equipment and have to contend with ATRAC. This puts you back to Before I got a day job (and a pay drop) I used to work in a wafer fabrication plant (making IC's) There were machines in there called nikon steppers which had MD Data drives there I think! It said MD DATA on the drive but it had no make on it. They were bought in 1993-94. Only catch was it was for the old magneto optical discs which were about the same size as a 1.4 floppy but about 10mm thick. They held 640 and 850 MB. The looked the same as MD's only bigger. When I first heard of MD's This is what I saw advertised. When I finally got an MD Portable MZR-30 I thought that Audio MD's and Data MD's might be different sizes and use the same technology. I remember B4 Ireland had any in the shops acutally drawing the dimensions of a MD disc out on paper and being wonderstruck by the tiny size. (also thinking that all Id ever need would be 5-6 discs) To This day, Ive never actually seen a MD data disc without its plastic wrapping. I just presume they look the same as an audio MD. The USB Audio spec has no provision for transferring auxiliary data along with an audio stream. The spec needs to be extended here. There's no reason that an extended (or even new) spec for an MD recorder with native USB could not include track marks, titling, and faster than 1X transfer, as well as the all-important data flow control mechanism. The current method of transfer (real-time with absolutely continuous data flow) exploits the real-time weakness of Windows while not taking advantage of the inherent high-speed advantage of MD. Data is written to the MD in high-speed (5X) bursts from a buffer in the MD deck. Why constrain the process with 1X S/PDIF transfer from the PC? Allow Windows, via USB, to fill or empty the MD buffer as it chooses, probably a lot faster than 1X but in a bursty, not continuous, manner. A couple of other issues that provide needless complication to the 1X S/PDIF transfer process and almost certainly unnecessaily alter the audio data being transfered, namely the Windows media timer and the MD's sample rate converter; these issues are eliminated by an MD recorder with native USB. Sony seems to be against allowing MD audio to evolve into an MD data drive, probably because as a recording company as well as an equipment manufacturer, they're trying to play both sides of the fence with respect to the copyright issues and SCMS. I would be happy if they left the ATRAC encoding/decoding in the MD recorder, only allowing unencoded audio to flow over the USB, thereby sidestepping the issue. Doing this would allow them to add native USB support without evolving to MD data. Other advantages of native USB are that it is physically simple and fairly small, making it ideal for portable recorders. Also, due to the modest power requirements of portable MD, USB could supply the power, simplifying connection to a single cable, rather than the 4 (S/PDIF in, S/PDIF out, deck control/status, power) now required. I see nothing but advantages in putting a USB connector on an audio MD recorder. I believe there are daughter boards that you can buy to add a digital input to SB Live. Yes from Hoontech, I have one (DBIII) for my SBLive and it works perfectly well, one issue to note the output is 48khz not 44. www.hoontech.com they are very good value for money. MD: Soundcard
Hello, I now have a soundcard for my computer that has a SPDIF in and out. It is an Aopen AW744. I am having a problem with popping noises in the SPDIF in and out. The problem is more pronounced when I remove a modem that sits next to the soundcard. I would like to use this card to record MD to CDR except the popping noises are in the way of making a good recording. They're only available from Japan at the moment. But in my book, they stand head and shoulders over the F80/C80's.
