MD: Sharp 722 still available? (UK)

2001-01-04 Thread Neil

Does anybody know if there's anywhere still selling the Sharp 722 (not too
concerned with it's reconditioned / graded / used, or new) in the UK?

Richer Sounds latest catalogue says they are selling graded ones, but I've
contacted a few of their stores, and rang their helpline number, and they
apparently have none left, and told me it's unlikely they'll be getting any
more.

Anyone know of anywhere else selling them? I'd only be interested in ones
having the remote, Li-Ion battery and charger.

TIA

Neil

re: MD: keyboards

2001-01-04 Thread James Day

I've got a Sony MDS-JB930 MD deck which has a PS/2 socket on the front for a
keyboard.

I use a small Infra-red keyboard that I bought cheap at a PC fair, and it
works excellently: no cables, I sit in my comfy chair across the room from
the deck in the correct listening position and do all of my titling, track
marks etc that way. The keyboard seems to replicate all of the functions on
the remote, and is much easier to use.

If you have an MD machine that accepts a keyboard I really reccomend getting
one, it just makes it all much more fun!

If you have a Mac with a USB port, buy the Microsoft Natural Keyboard
Pro. Your fingers and wrists will thank you for it, and you can use it
for the deck too. (Just not at the same time.) I'm very happy with mine
even though I *still* bleed in six colors. ;-)

Thanks for everyone's responses. I bought a set of digital
speakers last night (which I may return) and played some games
with them turned on. I noticed some clicks/pops every once in a
while when I was playing, so I think this is a computer issue.

At any rate, I may try detuning the video card some to see if
that helps. After a little research, there appear to be some
issues with the SB Live!. I'm going to try to work through them
separately.

Thanks again.

HeadRoom does ship Int'l with a minimum of fuss. And yes, for 250 USD I
would go for the HD-580s and the DSP Pro virtualizer. The DSP Pro is nothing
more than a nice gimmick, but the HD-580s are really ot of this world. For
$199, you can't go wrong.

Note: Todd just made a post at Headwize.com stating that Sennheiser will
put the 580s back in production. Which means it will go up in price in the
following months (the 580 is very cheap right now because it was supposed to
be discontinued).

RE: MD: Headphones Question

2001-01-04 Thread Magic

Hi all

I want to thank everyone for your messages. The main reason I want to
purchase the Sony model was that I am djaying and have heard many good words
about them for djaying... Anybody that uses the HD-580s for djaying? If
anyone could comment on them for this particular job. Well, I know it
depends on the music and my music (progressive house and trance) demand
strong headphones.

Thank you in advance,

Harry

MD: 48 KHz

2001-01-04 Thread Rodney Peterson

I've never seen this before, but I'm digitally recording a DVD (All Time
Party Classics Volume One-Various Artists DJ Music Videos-not copy
protected and about three hours long so will need three MD's) and the
display is showing 48 KHz, normally for CD it says 44.1 KHz Also this is
the second time I've recorded it, the first time around I manually
inserted track numbers because the MD recorder did not automatically
insert them, which I've also never seen before-but then again I
generally don't record all the tracks on a DVD at once. I erased the
first recording, because I decided it would be better to divide the disc
into track numbers later, and am now recording the disc with one track.
What's the deal with the 48 KHz sampling frequency? Is this the standard
for all DVD's?

There is no audio sampling frequency on DVD-ROM or DVD-RAM or the plethora
of rewritable DVD data standards, so when you mean DVD-Video, say DVD-Video
to avoid confusion.

In the US the audio requirement for DVD-Video (Digital Versatile Disc -
Video) is AC-3 (aka Dolby Digital). AC-3 allows for sampling frequencies
from as low as 44.1KHz if not lower up to 96KHz. The actual sampling
frequency used on a given video disc depends on the author.

Then there is DVD-Audio, but I won't go there because nobody else has :).

MD: USB and MD

2001-01-04 Thread J. Coon

I was asked the following question and since I don't have USB port, I
thought I'd ask the group. I told him to use the sound card Line In and
the MD Line out, but he didn't say what MD he had.

 I've got a sony
walkman MD and it came with a USB cable, PC link that connects the USB
cable and a stereo mini audio cable that plugs into the MD player. I
can record music from my Hard Drive to the MD with out any problem,
but I can't seem to go the other way. I've tried to use the Media
rack to receive input from the MD but that doesn't work. I have Magix
music studio Generation 5 for editing ect. but it is of no use in
importing the audio directly from the MD. I figure that I should be
able to import audio from the USB port but I can't figure out how. If
you have any ideas I would be very greatful.

No, you cannot input the sound into the USB port. The adapter uses a
digital to analog converter (DAC) for going from the usb - audio cable, but
I'm guessing it doesnt have an Analog to Digital converter (ADC) for going
from the audio cable- usb. I believe it was only set up for use going from
USB to miniplug cable, both the actual device and the software.

MD: Roland UA-30

Has anyone had any experiance with the Roland UA 30 sound card?

 from a video group posting:

Here's a similar situation: I have jumped through hoops to get good audio
quality. The TRV-900 audio input stage is quite noisy, so many of us have
experimented with MiniDisk recorders. The good news is, some have quiet
input stages and make high-quality digital recordings. The bad news is,
most PCs have no way to capture that audio except through a noisy analog
audio input on their consumer-grade sound card!

One solution I just discovered is the Roland UA-30 Audio Canvas. It's like
an external sound card that plugs into a USB port. It has line, mic,
coaxial, AND DIGITAL S/PDIF INPUTS!! This means an all-digital signal from
MiniDisk to PC. A thing of beauty is a joy forever.
