Re: MD: Sony MZ-R900

2001-04-16 Thread -=d9=-

The rechargable battery I think is the best feature of the r900 that the
r700, r500 have not got.
With up to 26 hours with just the rechargeable battery (in LP4?) and 21
hours in normal stereo mode (obviously you have to take the stated figures a
bit tongue in cheek), although I used my r900 on just the gumstick for
almost 2 weeks of using it anywhere from 1 to 2 hours so if u average that
at 1 1/2 hrs for almost 14 days, that nearly meets the stated battery life.
Also I think it looks nicer than the other r x00s

If you want detailed info about the r900 go to: (hope this bloody plain-text
link works :P )
http://www.minidisc.org/brian_youn/sony_mzr900.html

The R700 and the R500 use AA batteries, no gumpacks. They are MDLP capable
 according to MDCP data entries.

We can safely assume, however, that it is not type-R, because it would

MD: . is MDLP worth the wait?

hello-

advice time. i'm looking for opinions mainly.

if you had an MDLP home deck. and 2 non-MDLP players. and were in the
market for a used portable recorder.

would you wait until MDLP portable recorders became more widespread and
buy a MDLP recorder, or would you just buy a used non-MDLP recorder now? I
do use the MDLP feature on my home deck, but mainly only to record the
audio from movies.

paying for a new R900 is not an option right now, and i don't like what
i'm hearing about them anyway. I would like to get my hands on a used
portable MDLP recorder from sharp or aiwa however.

so would you buy non-MDLP now, or wait a while for a good, used portable
MDLP?

MD: Problems with CD-TEXT to title MD

2001-04-16 Thread Kenneth Lee

Hi everybody. I just want to post this to see if
anyone have the same problem. I am using Easy CD
Creator 5.0 to burn some audio CDs. I entered the
CD-text info also, and hoping when I copy the disc to
MD, I don't have to type the track title again.
However, when I make the copy, the MD recorder says
TEXTPROTECT. This is the first time I ever see this
message, and obviously, no title has been made, and it
seems the cd-text info on the cd has been copy-right
protected. Does anyone know what went wrong here? I
don't see any option in Easy CD Creator for me to
check or uncheck the copy-right protection. How can I
work over this problem? I am using the Sony JB940,
and a Sony CD changer, with s-link connected. Any
ideas are welcome. Thanks.

Re: MD: Problems with CD-TEXT to title MD

2001-04-16 Thread jtasker

However, when I make the copy, the MD recorder says
 TEXTPROTECT.

Well from browsing around minidisc.org, I found this
(it's about the MXD-D3, let me know if it works for you):

"One of the things I love about the MXD-D3 is the fact
that it transfers CD-Text information to the MD when
recording from CD, so you don't have to sit and title it
all manually. However, it appears there are some SCMS-
like rules for CD-Text also, and when using most burning
software I get a 'TextProtect' error, meaning that the
song can be copied but the text won't get to the MD.
However, I've noticed a glitch that still allows the
text to be transferred. When the unit is copying a CD,
it puts the CD-Text title in a 'name buffer' on the MD
side. Then the unit uses the buffer to insert the new
information into the TOC. When it's copying a CD-Text
disc with protected text, it still copies the name to
this buffer, but then doesn't send the name to the TOC.
I've found that while the unit is copying, if you wait
until after the unit says 'textprotect' hit the AMS
knob. Select 'name?' and then 'name in?'. The data is
there! just hit 'yes' and it copies the name to the TOC.
I know it's slightly more 'manual' than it should be,
but it still beats titling manually. -Adam Sowers"

depends on your use. if you want a portable recorder to record live music,
you wouldn't want to use mdlp most of the time anyway (unless perhaps you
really have to get it all on one disc). but if you just want something
small you can dub cds with, mdlp could be useful. of course, if you got an
mdlp recorder, you'd have a portable to LISTEN to mdlp things on too,
seeing that you have an mdlp home deck.

i have a sharp 702 it meets all my portable needs fine (mostly recording
live music).

My point is that the battery indicator is very unpredictable. It fluctuates
with the power on/off of the spindle, the read/write action, and many other
things. The indicator can blink for light years while it manages to record,
or appear to have 1/4 and suddenly run out.

Compare it to any Panasonic and you'll see what I mean.

the thing is, with around 30 hours playback on just the gumpack battery
the
reason (i assume), u aint getting an indicator of when its gonna run out
is
cos it hasn't run out, simple.

Thanks for replying... I tried your idea, but it doesn't seem to be working.
It seems like there is somekind of protection like the SCMS that they placed
on the cd. The music can pass thru, but not the cd text. Hum.. if you have
some idea in using Easy CD Creator 4.0/5.0 it will be helpful. If I can
change the settings of the copy-right status of the cd.

RE: MD: Problems with CD-TEXT to title MD

2001-04-16 Thread Kenneth Lee

Thanks Josh,

The situation described here seems to be the problem exactly. However,
seems the work-around does not apply to the JB940. When I hit the AMS node
and try to enter the name, the memory buffer seems to be empty, and no name
is being entered. Now only if I can find a way to create an audio CD with
full control on the copy-right status, including the CD-text info, the
problem can be solved. Any ideas about which cd burning software can do
this? Or how to do this in Easy CD Creator 4.0/5.0?

Thanks for your reply,
Ken

I DO know that in the burning program Nero 5 (i think all burners work
under it) theres a checkbox for "Protection" under each tracks'
properties (double click on a track to view its properties) - maybe
unchecking it will allow you to transfer the titles? (nero also supports
cdtext) www.ahead.de - there is a free demo - 30 days so you could try

hey

i have decided to trade my sony MZR55 for a sharp 721/722, if possible. i
prefer the sharp's user interface and would put up with the lesser battery
life and noisier transport just to have that those buttons back!!

my unit has everything (felt pouches, remote, phones, battery accesory, wall
wart recharger, etc.), but i may not have the original box--im still
looking.

you propose the fine print and logistics; i'll be flexible.

thanks

I would buy, or wait for, an MDLP machine.

I recently got an MZ-R900 and have started playing with MDLP
recording. The ability to record continuously for 5 1/3 hours without
having to check batteries, levels, or media is unique. There is no
other portable format that can do this. (Is there?)

I used it to record a family get together one Saturday. After a few
hours the fact that I was recording seemed to have faded from
everyone's mind. It was really an "environment recorder" at that
point. In fact, one of my favorite sections is a period of about 45
minutes when no one was around. During that period you can hear some
birds on the porch, occasional conversations in another room, a person
passing through, etc. With a media cost of around 25 cents an hour you
can do things like this.

I think LP4 quality is okay, certainly fine for speech (though you can
still hear ATRAC3/LP4 artifacts in speech recordings if you know what
to listen for). Every non-cognoscenti who gave it a listen though
thought it sounded great.

Like it or not, MDLP will soon be on every Minidisc unit being made
(if not already). If you're an MD fan and want to stay on top of the
format, it doesn't really make sense to keep getting incompatible
gear.

Rick

p.s. the "ambient" recordings I made probably aren't worth much more
than $0.25/hr today, but they're going straight into my time capsule
(read: old shoe box). We'll listen to them next in another 5 or 10 years.
