You probably won't like this either, but there you go...

 http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns1367

Copying using home CD recorders is variable, with the US CD giving a no
disk
 message on some recorders.

When the digital output from a CD player is connected to the digital input
of
Philips CD recorder, or Sony Mini Disc recorder, the German disc gives the
error
message Copy Prohibit or Cannot Copy.

hrmmm if this is standard smcs copy protection, i really dont care, i have a
stripper. however it probably will annoy others that do not. However if
it's some other schema that we dont know about then they are just
evil...wait the riaa is evil anyway

oh yeah on a side note, has anyone purchased a cd (from a mainstream band)
within let's just say the last 5 years, that you actually enjoyed every
track on the cd? out of the many many that i have purchased, i can honestly
say that i have less than a dozen that i could listen to every track and be
pleased. so maybe it's not all the riaa's fault, maybe artists should stop
making crap too :) just my 2 cents on that one.

brought it home and tried it nothing happened. I assumed that it's
one of those Mac non-compatibility issues and never looked into it
further. Now I found this list and I was wondering if one of you
experienced MiniDisc guru's know of a fix for me - Mac drivers? I
realize this is SUCH a newbie question, but I can't find info
elsewhere. Thanks in advance for your input.

MR-R70 or 700?

I'm assuming that your PC Link is simply a rebadged Xitel unit? As long as
you have Mac OS 9.0.4 or later, you should just be able to hook the PC Link
up to one of your Mac's USB ports, select USB in the Audio Out section
of the Sound control panel, and record away.

Re: MD: Intro MZ-R700 and D vs. A recording

2001-10-04 Thread Eric Woudenberg, Minidisc.org Editor

Hi Brian,

One of the things I'm psyched about is the non-analog recording ability
brought by the Xitel dongle. I'm assuming, however, that the R700 has the
ability to record in analog, as well, tho, correct? Is there any
functional difference between digital and analog recording? Will, for
example, the recorder not be able to put in track marks in analog mode?

I've updated the FAQ to answer your questions:
http://www.minidisc.org/minidisc_faq.html#analogrecording

Where's a good place to buy blank MDs? I've read a couple of articles
(probably on minidisc.org [md.o?]) that suggest there's no real difference
in quality of the various media, so I guess it boils down to price. The
only places I can think of in town to buy 'em (Phoenix) is Best Buy and
Fry's Electronics. I'm assuming there're good on-line vendors, but where?

Someone just told me about STI blanks for $1.20 from Circuit City,
see today's (10/4) minidisc.org news. Has anyone tried these STI
discs? I've never heard of them.

Re: MD: Making 2 or 4 hours recordings

2001-10-04 Thread Mark Ligtenstein

From my own experience I can have made many FM-broadcast recordings
on my JVC HiFi VHS recorder. It works great, but it is not very
convenient for playback.
Later I record the tape to my MD-deck and do the editing. Besides
that, VHS tape is not the best type of storage in the long run. Older
tapes deteriote and MD doesn't have that problem.

The big advantage of this system is that I can record radio using the
timer of the video. I've even used VHS HiFi to record internet radio
broadcasts (my computer is connected to my stereo). This solves
storage problems for people with smaller hard drives. It's cheaper to
buy a cable than a bigger hard drive.

The recorded MD sounds as good as the original broadcast. HiFi VHS
(in single play mode) is so good, that you can't tell the difference
between the broadcast and the recording. I think this is the most
underused feature of HiFi VHS recorders. And the biggest problem now
is that on cheaper models the manufacturers leave out the audio in
sockets.

But if you're in the market for buying a new VHS machine, make sure
it has audio in. It is a feature you'll love!

I've been having a problem with my Sharp MD-MT161. When I play back a
disc I have recorded I often get places on the disc where playback seems
to pause, sometimes for several seconds. It will then resume. I suppose it
is like skipping but it happens at the same point on the disc every time.

I was wondering if it was a problem with the discs (maxell) but I have heard
a whisper that this problem has occurred with other Sharp units.

It sounds like your machine is getting read errors. Try playing the
disc in a different unit, to isolate whether your machine or the
recording is at fault.

On Sony machines at least, when the time indicator does not advance
that indicates that the machine is getting errors reading the disc.

When I bought them in May, they were $US 1.40 (actually, $34.95 for a box of
twenty-five [with slip cases]); they were briefly on sale for $29.95 (which
would be $1.198 per disc) but last I checked in the store, the price had
risen back to $34.95. The web site has them for $29.95 again today (just my
luck that they're never on sale when I have a need for more blanks).
They're labeled with the brand name DigitalMedia with no space.

They seem fine, which is more than I can say for STI's CDRWs. I've used
about eight from that box so far with no problems except that the narrow
labels for the edges tend to curl off.

Yeah, I have OS 9.1, soon to have OS X.1 ... I've never done the select

occurred to me because on the PC it just popped right up, and I've never
used another USB device where this would apply. I'm still new to my Mac
too, actually. Thanks tons for the responses - Such a simple thing to miss
and I assumed so quickly that it was just useless (the PC link) ;)

I'm going to try it out straight-away when I get home today. I feel loads
better about using the USB versus the non-optical audio-out.

Thnx!

Re: MD: Making 2 or 4 hours recordings

2001-10-04 Thread Gary Gilliland

Using a VCR with one of the older Sony or Denon PCM adapters works well. I used
this for several years recording a 2-Hour FM program weekly using the timer in the
VCR even while on holiday. In VHS, only SP is really satisfactory, and only T-120
tapes are rugged enough to be reliable. VCRs are cheap now and the PCM video is
robust, so rigging two or more VCRs to take two hours each seriatim should present no
serious problem.

I have several Sonys and could be persuaded to part with one or two, but there used
to be one every week or so on eBay going for low prices. The Sony PCM 10, F1, 501
701 should do fine and be cheaper than the digital I/O models 100 601.

  Hope this helps.

Re: MD: MD v DAT

I have a portable DAT and MD. I much prefer the MD
due to editing capablities. You have to sit with your
finger on the DAT's pause button if you want to edit
out commercials while recording, you can not edit out
unwanted material latter like you can with MD.

There is a way. Use Skip IDs.

The material is still there, but the DAT deck
fast-forwards past it during later playback.

I have purchased many CD's in the last 5 years with all good tracks. I don't
know what you like to listen to, but try the new 'Embrace' CD called 'If

the list goes on and on and on and on..
