RE: MD: Sony 750 FM/AM

2001-10-16 Thread Simon Mackay

===BEGIN QUOTE==
I've got a 750. The FM reception is pretty good. I listen to it quite
often when I'm in public transport. Sometimes there's some
distortion, but that's usually caused by the electrical systems of
the train. AM reception is OK, but I hardly ever listen to AM. In the
Netherlands all the stations I listen to are in the FM range.
===END QUOTE==

When you listen to FM on any Walkman radio, including the G750, the
headphone cord is your FM aerial / antenna. There are a lot of factors to
consider with FM radio on a Walkman. The metal housing that is common with
public transport vehicles can act as an RF shield and, as you travel, you
will experience destructive multipath which is similar to ghosting on
analogue TV. This is because you will receive radio signals reflected off
hills and tall buildings as well as the direct signal that is emanating from
your favourite station's transmitting tower. This can cause cancelling out
which results in poor signal or mono reception at spasmodic times. As you
walk or travel; or even move your headphone lead, the signal will come back
to normal stereo reception.

So I wouldn't expect perfect reception out of a Walkman radio because of the
way it is used. As well, I often wonder whether the cable that runs between
the G750 and the remote is the set's FM aerial or whether it is just the
headphone cable?

With regards

MD: Japanese Mail Order?

2001-10-16 Thread Shawn Lin

Does anyone know of any discount electronics mail-order stores in Japan
that accept international orders, payment via credit card, and also ship
internationally? I've had good luck ordering internationally from Dick
Smith Electronics in Australia, it was quick easy, just like ordering
from anywhere else. Not to mention I got a better price from Dick Smith
than for the same item at a US-based online store. With today's global
economy, I would think it should be just as easy ordering from Japan,
but I can't find any stores.

I was just wondering because I'd really like a 2-DIN CD/MD/TV car
stereo. The only 2 I've found on the US market are the Clarion MAX2256
(CD/TV/Cassette - yuck) and the Eclipse 7301, also CD/TV/Cassette.
Eeew, CASSETTE?!?!? I want MD! Clarion has one in Japan called the
MAX615, sold under the Addzest brand. I wouldn't mind having one, and
I've seen places to get the radio station band converter to use one in
the US.

Try www.japan-direct.com they seem to carry a lot of md products. I think they take
requests too if the item isn't listed.

Re: MD: Cd Players

2001-10-16 Thread Eric Woudenberg, Minidisc.org Editor

Hi Joshua,

[I'm cc'ing to the MD mailing list]

Joshua writes:

I've seen mini CD's that are half the size of CD's that play in cd =
players. If I took off the casing of the MD, would I be able to play =
the CD in a regular CD player. If not, is it because the size is =
different, or the compatibility?

It's an interesting question. There would be multiple problems trying
to play a bare MD in a CD player:

1) Physical Disc Diameter:
Mini-CD (hereafter MCD) = 80mm
MD = 64mm
2) Lead-in diameter (where the data starts on the disc):
MCD/CD lead-in = 46mm
MD lead-in = 29mm
3) Chucking mechanism:
MCD/CD = 15mm chucking hole
MD = magnetic clamping through steel plate on MD (with alignment hole)
4) Recording system:
MCD/CD = PIT/LAND
MD = PIT/LAND for pre-recorded, Magneto-Optical for recordable
5) Encoding:
MCD/CD = PCM, MP3, WMA, etc.
MD = ATRAC, ATRAC3

The MD and CD track pitch and optical parameters (spot size) are the
same however.

Re: MD: Japanese Mail Order?

Thanks for the suggestion.
I've looked into Japan-Direct, and they charger a finder's fee,
additional markup, etc. I think one or more of their employees just
lives in Japan and runs to the store to buy whatever it is someone is
looking for.
I was really hoping to deal directly with a Japanese discount store and
pay the same price that a resident of Japan would pay.

I had asked them about it before, and the price quoted to me was several
hundred dollars above MSRP.

Sure, here it is:

http://www.addzest.com/audio/main_products/2001/MAX615.html

Go to http://babel.altavista.com if you need the page translated.
My dash only takes 1-1/2 DIN, but I'd gladly enlarge the opening an
additional inch for this bad boy.

It's a shame the JVC combination mechanism used in their KD-MX3000,
MX2900, etc. car stereos didn't take off. I'm surprised Sony didn't try
something similar. What better way to get people hooked to MD than by
offering MD equipment that can also play their CDs? This probably
wouldn't work for a portable, but in a car where both CD and MD can fit
into a single DIN (and use a single mechanism), I can certainly see this
as a huge benefit. Many people might be indecisive about buying an MD
car stereo as it would mean they can't play CD's in the car anymore, but
a combination mechanism would take care of that indecision. Especially
if a combo player only cost a little bit more than a standard CD
player. I have a KD-MX3000, and I think it's great! It would be nice
if the combo mechanism sold in enough numbers to drop its price to where
it could be offered in everything. To where every CD or DVD player sold
could also play and record to MD (or at least play them).

MD: How long does the media last?

2001-10-16 Thread Eric Ivanoff

I've been re-recording over and over again onto the same pool of ten or so
minidisc's that I use specifically for my ever-growing Mp3 library and my
commute to work. I've put together a few play lists I'd like to burn for
keeps, but I'm weary of using the old minidiscs because of impeding
corruption or some other wear related issue. How long does the media
generally live? The only MD's I've used have been Sony ... don't know why,
maybe it's the colours, I haven't had any problems with them either.

Sony claims ~1,000,000 times rewrite capability. Even low quality MD
blanks should be good for at least 250,000 rewrites.

I bought a Sony CD/MD MXD-D3 last year. I'm very happy with this
machine. Maybe you can get one of these, since it has been replaced
by the MXD-D4. The new model also includes MDLP. If I were to buy a
new machine right now, I would save for the MXD-D5C. It has the same
functions as the D4, but includes a 5CD changer and a PS/2 keyboard
in. Great for titling and the only thing I really miss on my D3.

Mark,

I've just been told that the EasyTitle2 is back in production. This
allows you to use a normal PS/2 keyboard on any Sony deck. See today's
minidisc.org news.
