MD: Sony MZ-R700DPC

2001-06-17 Thread David Fincher

I dropped by Target today and picked up the 700, as someone on this list
had earlier promised it would be there. They had the 500 advertised at
$149 and the 700 at $199. It rang up for $249, but the display said $199,
so I challenged them to look at it and they corrected it. What was even
cooler is that you can get a Target card and take an additional 10% off of
your purchase. So if you want to buy one (or more) and get one of their
cards, the cost comes out to $180 plus tax.

I must say that I am very impressed with the quality of the unit, and
surprised with how much the salesman knew about the unit. He was able to
explain to me the difference between the 700 and 500 (which I already
knew), and seemed genuinely excited about the products. Maybe it was a
fluke, but I think he could convince a questioning customer to choose MD
over MP3. The only thing I didn't like about it was that they only had the
green one in stock (and my kids argued over whether it's green or
yellow). One more cute thing: My two year old heard me talking about it
to my wife, and she saw it and said, I like your mickeydix player,
Daddy. So there you go, score one for youth appeal. Now I just need some
Hello Kitty md's for her to see.

Anyway, I have just a couple of questions about the unit for those of you
who have one.

1. It comes with the Sony Ni-Cad battery. I have been using NiMh AA cells
in my other Sony equipment (R-30 and EP-11), but not charging them within
the units. I'm curious if it would be okay to charge an NiMh within the
700. My charger puts out 1.5V at 50-80 Ma, and is rated OK for Ni-cad or
NiMh. I don't want to take a risk, but I'd rather use the NiMh cells and
save the Sony one in case I resell this later.

2. The book specifically says do not use other Sony remotes from other MD
units. Specifically, p. 20 says, To prevent recorder malfunction, do not
use a remote control that was supplied with another Sony portable MD
model. I have a lipstick remote (MZ-R35) from the EP-11 that has LCD
readout which I would like to use. However, I'm not interested in causing
a recorder malfunction. I'm not encouraging anyone on the list to damage
their unit, but I thought some of you may have tried this by now.

Thanks for your help.

MD: Shopping advice

2001-04-20 Thread David Fincher

Since I read last week about the Sony MZ-R500 selling for $129, I've
thought more about buying it. But I wonder if anyone who has an R500 would
share some impressions of it.

I know that it doesn't come with a remote, but I have an old Sony
"lipstick" style remote (MZ-R50). Does anyone know if that remote will
work with it?

Finally, are there any other non-Sony options in the ballpark on price
(around $150) that are MDLP compatible?

Thanks for your insights.

MD: Refurbished Sharp MD-R3

2001-01-10 Thread David Fincher

I have the opportunity to purchase a refurbished Sharp MD-R3 for
approximately $175. The attractive part of this particular unit is that it
has both coax and optical in, while also having optical digital out. Does
anyone have this unit who could tell me if they think it would be a wise
purchase to make?

Thanks

MD: Exchange rate benefits?

2001-01-02 Thread David Fincher

Around Christmas time, I heard a story on NBC about how the Dollar to Euro
conversion rate was so beneficial for Americans right now, it was enabling
Americans to have super-cheap vacations in Europe .

My question for any of our European list members: Is there any way that we
Americans can take advantage of this in the realm of MD? In other words,
are there good online merchants in Europe who will ship to America and
allow this excellent exchange rate to save us money. I'm thinking about
possibly picking up a Sony JE640 or something like that, and I'm just
looking at different options of where to buy.

Thanks!

Does anyone know where I can by one of the Zoltrix nightingale sound
cards and the optical attachment? Their web page is very unhelpful when
it comes to actually buying their products.

MD: Sharp MDX60

2000-07-01 Thread David Fincher

In response to the news that the MDX60 is available for approx. $150,
let me say as a happy MDX60 that it is a bargain for that price. I have
had an MDX60 for 6 months now, and I gave $260 for mine, which was a
great deal at the time. The addition of a cassette deck is very nice,
as the unit does a very good job of copying from MD to tape or vice
versa. In fact, this unit is one of the easiest I've ever used, with 2
analog auxiliary in (1/8" stereo and RCA), one optical digital in, 2
outputs (RCA line out and 1/8" headphone), and the ability to sync with
certain sharp portables. I don't think the ATRAC recording quality is
quite as high as what I've been able to make using my CD changer to Sony
R30, but it's not bad (and I haven't tested it blind).

If you have any questions about the MDX60, don't hesitate to ask, but I
recommend it without hesitancy.

MD: Digital music survey

2000-03-23 Thread David Fincher

I was excited yesterday when Harris contacted me to participate in a
poll about the future of digital music. Being an avid md user, I
thought I'd get a chance to plug md for this nationwide poll. Instead,
I found not ONE question about MD. It was all about MP3. It asked a
question such as, "What devices do you use to listen to music," and MD
was not even a choice. This survey took about 15 minutes to fill out,
and there wasn't even one place where a respondent could offer any
answer besides those already provided. Needless to say, I rated mp3 as
poorly as possible. One question that stuck out to me was, "Which of
the following digital music players would you be more likely to buy:
One with 32MB memory for $149, a 64MB unit for $199, a 96MB unit for
$239, or a 128MB unit for $269." There was no other option. I couldn't
continue the survey without checking one of the boxes, even though I
wouldn't buy any of them.

I guess this could be interpreted 2 ways: Either the people making this
poll think that md is out for the future of digital music, or else they
are clueless.

Anyway, I thought you might be interested to see just another way md is
left out of the places where it belongs.

MD: Vortex2

Computer Geeks has the Vortex2 SQ2500 sound card with digital out for
$39 right now. I wonder if anyone has used this card and can comment on
its quality. Does it work well with MD? Also, is there any way to add
a digital in port?

MD: MDH-10

2000-02-21 Thread David Fincher

With all the talk about USB to MD, I've been wondering what would keep
someone from buying a used MDH-10 and putting a USB SCSI interface on
it? Would that enable audio transfer from audio disc to computer, or
just from data disc to computer? Does anybody have an MDH-10 who can
input on what the audio transfer capabilities are?

MD: No TOC write after mono recording

2000-02-08 Thread David Fincher

In class yesterday, I was using my trusty Sony MZ-R30 to record the
lecture using a microphone I built into a 1/8" plug. The lithium-ion
battery had plenty of power, the audio level meter showed that the
recorder was getting a strong signal. I had set the unit to manual
recording level and was recording in MONO. I set track marks (manually)
every 15 minutes or so. When the teacher took a break after about 80
minutes of talking, I hit stop, expecting the unit to write to the TOC.
Instead, the screen goes blank. All of what I recorded was gone. The
disk showed nothing.

When the class came back from the break, I recorded again. There were
approximately 60 minutes left, and everything worked just fine. It
wrote to the TOC and is now on the disk.

The strange thing about this is that the last time I tried recording
that class, it did the same thing. Only this time, I recorded the full
140 minutes in mono, but when I hit stop, It didn't write the TOC.

My question: Is this a defective unit or a limitation of the R30? It
has never given me any trouble recording in mono before, either from mic
or line in. But these were the only times I had recorded over 75
minutes in mono without hitting stop to write the TOC before the 75
minute time period. Is there a buffer limitation that Sony knows about
but hasn't told us?

Thanks for your help.

MD: NiMH batteries

2000-01-22 Thread David Fincher

I am using the NEXcell Nickel Metal Hydride batteries in a Sony EP-11.
I've been getting great results out of these batteries (3-5 hours of use
per charge), but after listening to the discussion about alkaline vs.
NiCad, I'm wondering if there's a possibility of danger to my Sony? Any
ideas?

MD: Sharp MD-X60

2000-01-06 Thread David Fincher

Does anybody know anything about the Sharp MD-X5? I won the bid for one
on Onsale, but it's on backorder. I've got a chance to cancel the bid
now if there's something dissatisfactory about it? I can't find a
review on it anywhere to know for sure? How much is a fair price to pay
for a refurbished one? I'd appreciate any suggestions you might have.

MD: Copyright question

1999-12-26 Thread David Fincher

With all the discussion about copyright, I have a related question that
I'd like some illumination on. If I have my own copy of a cassette, and
the cassette is now defective (eaten by a player, magnetized, baked in
the sun), is it legal for me to make a copy from a friend's cd (of the
same album, just the cd version of it) to a minidisc? I assume since
I've paid the royalty when I purchased the album that it would be
legal. What if the tape is workable, but I just want a digital copy, so
I borrow a friend's cd and make a copy to md?

Thanks for your help.
