Re: MD: sec: unclassified LP to MD
LPs to MD. What's the opinion on the best (and free :-)) software to reduce the clicks, pops and general noise? Many thanks Kev I dont know but there is a device you can buy that you hook up to your sound sytem to actually ADD clicks pops and noise to make your recording sound like an LP. Edwin Carter wrote: - the discs all play back perfectly fine on my portable player - the glitches are always in roughly the same places on the tracks - all have been recorded from analogue sources (i.e. cassette or radio) - the same problem occurs with two brands of MD (Maxell and Sony) - I think the problem's never happened on a new disc, but it does still happen after a total erase. I had this problem (still do) but only for certain disks. I also had problems when recording from a digital source where it added loads of trackmarks and did not copy correctly. I thought it was dodgy discs at the time but after reading a lot of replies from the people on the list here I am inclined to believe that its the Equipment that could be doing damage to the disc. dont know how/why or how to stop it. The disks that have the problems also play fine on my portable (MZR-91) but my Deck (Sony S-38) Id say has seen its final days. (It also has the phantom eject glitch) Sorry I could not of been any help but at least you know your not the only one with that problem. Re: MD: Din unlock??
Hi, I've got a sony je520 deck. And when I want to record to a blank md, I get the error: 'Din unlock c71'. Could anyone tell me what's wrong? Thanks, Niels Schenk Is there a little switch to change it from Digital recording mode to Analog recording mode ? Yep ditto here in Ireland. Everyone seems to have an MD unit these days, no more "Wow what the hell is that" or asking for Minidiscs in music stores and being directed to the old smaller CD's that some singles came in. Ive seen plenty of MP3 players in shops but have also yet to meet anyone IRL that actually has one or uses one. Ive never liked mp3s much but that was because of little things like Album covers/sleeves etc. I like being able to walk about with a MD with an album cover printed on the sleeve and a title written on the disc that you can see before playing/putting into the unit. Handier for lending to friends etc. I think for me it boils down to someone walking into your house and seeing your music collection of MD/LP/CD and Tapes is more pleasing to the eye that going to a computer and looking at the contents of your hardrive full of mp3 files. Re: MD: Best buy, phasing out MD equip ??
This is so bloody ridiculous!! MD is far better than CD-R or CD-RW! Sorry. But here I cannot agree with you. How can a data compressed format possibly be superior to a properly dithered uncompressed digital recording? This statement just doesn't make sense. Don C. I was always under the impression that MD was brought out to rpelace the Tape and not the CD. But most people (including myself) seem to always get into the issue of MD vs CD. Oh I dunno. My Phillips Expanium is pretty awesome. Don C. Is that that thingy thats about the size of a discman and stores thousands of songs ?? If so whats the average price and how to you catalog the music. I saw an Ad for one I think before and was wondering about it. Re: MD: Analogue MP3 -- MD track markers
CD-RW requires more power than CD-R to read. Many portable CD players cannot read CD-RW. Same goes for some very old, first generation CD-ROM drives, and apparantly a small number of DVD-Video decks. Again, as I said, the fault is the deck, not the media. Agreed. Ive also seen this problem b4 on not so old CDROM drives. Currently. With some CD Burning software it states that if the CD player you are going to use to play an Audio CD DOES NOT support CD text and you Burn a CD on CD-R or CD-RW with the CD text support option turned on then it might not play. My Girlfriends sony portable CD player is only a year old and will not play any CD-R's I burn for her. Yet they play fine on every other deck or even those really cheap players for 30/40 quid. It worries me a little as in my spare time I write a music/fashion magazine which I intend to feature a compilation on MD and or CD (CD-R). I dont want poeple coming back to me with the CD telling me it does not play on their CD player. laughing Try telling them its not the media after buying my magazine. Re: MD: data onto audio MD, for the depraved
I am sorry Dave, but I don't think Sony currently sells a MD data deck. It is my understanding that they used to sell them but they were very slow and have been discontinued for years. So, if you want to store digital computer data to a minidisc, you will most likely be using modern equipment and have to contend with ATRAC. This puts you back to Before I got a day job (and a pay drop) I used to work in a wafer fabrication plant (making IC's) There were machines in there called nikon steppers which had MD Data drives there I think! It said MD DATA on the drive but it had no make on it. They were bought in 1993-94. Only catch was it was for the old magneto optical discs which were about the same size as a 1.4 floppy but about 10mm thick. They held 640 and 850 MB. The looked the same as MD's only bigger. When I first heard of MD's This is what I saw advertised. When I finally got an MD Portable MZR-30 I thought that Audio MD's and Data MD's might be different sizes and use the same technology. I remember B4 Ireland had any in the shops acutally drawing the dimensions of a MD disc out on paper and being wonderstruck by the tiny size. (also thinking that all Id ever need would be 5-6 discs) To This day, Ive never actually seen a MD data disc without its plastic wrapping. I just presume they look the same as an audio MD. RE: MD: What is Sony thinking?!?
Agreed. I think that MP3 is far too computer-intensive. Granted, downloading MP3s is far easier if you have a power connection to the Internet instead of a dial-up, but I still feel it's just too much trouble for not enough quality. Jonathan C. R. Davis ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Tell me about it. In work its great to download mp3s for free music, I dont keep them as files I just transfer them as audio to a md from the back of my sun station. But: At home it takes me about 20mins to download a 3 min mp3 which is crazy. I just dont like them for some reason. I even got a CD burner a few days ago and would not make audio comps for my own listening, way to easy to damage. Ill stick with the burner for data storage. Still prefer the MD over everything for music. Bryan http://bullets.gothic.ie - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: MD: MZ-R90 problems
Jens Thomas wrote: Hi My MZ-R90 started playing up recently by skipping (jumping a lot and cutting out - just like a scratched vinyl LP). Luckily it was still under Ive had no real problems with mine but It has skipped on my a bit even when I am just walking. My r-30 never did this and it did not have a fantastic 40 sec memory. Other differences I noticed and did not like. r-30 faster to read/write TOC and was almost instant. r-90 slower to read/write TOC slower to start playing the 1st track after inserting a disc. wayyy slower to try to search 20 seconds into a track you would nearly be better off to wait 20 secs. r-90 mechanical sounds are louder. The r-30 also "seems" to have a better output from the headphone socket. I used the same earbuds on both the r-30 and the r-90. (AVLS off in both cases) when the r-30 volume was only half way up it was the equiviliant of the r-90 at top volume. Do you have any evidence to your claim that they are inferior, and should not be used for "important" recordings? Are you saying that we shouldn't use Hi-Space discs for "important" recordings because they are less expensive? Hi-Space would love you. theres a sales manager job going if interested... (dont think Id get the job after my last post) http://www.hi-space.com/eng/pages/general/jobs1.html The only problems I have ever had with blanks are from Maxell and Hi-space. Several times Making a recording with a new disc freshly unwraped from the plastic only to find it wont play correctly. Also lots of UTOC errors. It was not my equipment as on the occasions where this did happen I tried a Sony MZR-30 a Sony S38 and a Sony MZR-90 to make sure, and I gave a disc to a friend with an MD build into a hi-fi and she got errors too. I use Hi-space discs all the time as they are better value for money, but when I (personally) see them on sale for 1/3 the price of others and they give me UTOC errors from time to time when other brands do not then that to me says somethings wrong there and that Id prefer to use (but cannot afford to) a different brand for recordings that are important to me. The patchy bits. Ive seen when holding them up to strong light. TDK/Sony look fairly smooth and uniform wheres the Hi-space Ive had do not look uniform. Ever see stress marks/colours on plastic? those rainbow colours? there are lots more on the hi-space disks than there are on more expensive brands. Are you saying that we shouldn't use Hi-Space discs for "important" recordings because they are less expensive? Use whatever discs you want, Im not saying what people should or should not do, I was only giving my opinion on the discs and how I found them. MD: disc quality was :Re: Lens Cleaners
Yes, the record head sits on the disc surface, lubed by a small drop of silicon grease... GB Someone mentioned the silicon grease about a year back when I asked about the different brands and what the quality differance. It was either Rob/Ralph or Jim. (not exact words but.) They said that on the disc itself there is a thin layer of silicon which aids recording. The cheaper MD blanks might not have this or this layer of silicon gease might not be as good so even though the disk may sound the same the life time of the recording/disc could be shortened by using a cheaper disc. I always hated the Hi-space disks, from even holding the disc up to the light you can see "patchy bits" as if parts of the disc were thicker than others. TDK my fav brand but they are still 15 quid for 5. Hi Space less than a pound each for an 80min blank. fine for every day use with recordings that are not important. Re: MD: Lens Cleaners
lens cleaners. The best way to clean a dirty lens in my opinion is a cotton bud and some good quality cleaning fluid. All the best Ian Ive always heard everyone say that the lens cleaners would scratch the lens but looking at one I bought it looks harmless. Only like a few soft bristles to wipe off surface dirt. a cotton bud looks as though it would do more damage. I have always used cotton buts to clean tape heads and old CD units but if you are using a MD deck how to you clean the lens would you have to stick the cotton but in the slot and hope for the best or unscrew the cover off the MD Unit to gain access to the lens. MD: Track Reading trouble with the MDS38
Hi all, Wow I have not posted here in well over a year but with a promotion in work I dont have to look over my shoulder as much when I am writing mail or surfing so Im back. I eventually got rid of my Sony R-30 portable and tried to get my hands on a black or silver R-90. Every place I went they said sure but when it came down to it they could not get any off Sony. I ended up with the pale blue R91 which I love but still prefer my R-30. R91 takes a long time to and is slow from disc insertion to playing. I recently bought some high space 80min blanks from Richer Sounds for 98p (Irish Pound) each that is a big price drop as when they came out first they were 37 pounds for 5 and a tenner each. After recording onto them with the R91 in work I brought them home and tried to play them on my Sony MDS38. But not a hope the first track jammed and would not play. I stuck in a dreaded lens cleaning disc but that did not help. I put the recorderd disc back into the R91 and it played fine. I then went to record from the MDS38 onto a 74 min TDK MD-RXG (those lovely ones with the alaminiuium) (digitally) and it started to add phantom track marks and had 29 track marks when the CD had only 12. once I played the recorded disc it started to stick as well. (The CD I used I had alread copied to MD previously with no porblems) SO the problem has to be with the MDS38 not the discs. Previous recordings I have made with the MDS38 (last year) play fine on it. It just seems to be certain discs. Any one got any input on what might be wrong? maybe the slide where the lens runs along sticks? maybe it has problems with cheap/newer discs? I also have the MDS38 turn on bug where in the middle of the night the machine turns itself on and tries to eject a disc over and over again even though there is no disc inserted. this is caused by a dodgy sensor and Ive found If I insert a disc and leave the unit off with the disc in then it does not occur. Id love a new deck but with a morgage its a no can do at the moment.
