BlankShop http://www.blankshop.com/erol.htmlfor online orders.

Re: MD: MP3 downloading via NetMD

Memo from John H Rolt of PricewaterhouseCoopers

 Start of message text

Quoting: Dan Frakes [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The thing that makes me worry about NetMD is that if the above is true
(you
need software to do the conversion), MiniDisc will become
platform-dependent. That is, in order to be able to use NetMD, you need
software written for your computing platform.
..
I hope they take their proverbial heads out of their
proverbial behinds and make sure that they make this new format/feature
available to everyone.

Totally. I really want to be able easily to edit my own recordings between
MD and the new Mac (the one I intend to get RSN) - and back. Meanwhile
(going slightly off-topic into the picture domain), I still have no easy
way of transferring still pictures from my (new) Sony camcorder to my (old,
non-USB) Mac; the supplied software (Picture Gear Lite) works nicely on
Windows but of course not on any Mac. (Anyone know of software which
will?).

Speaking of which (the camera), you'd think I'd know better after so many
burnt fingers (my own included) with 'End Search' on MD - that lovely new
camera over-wrote some of our holiday video yesterday because I forgot to
press its 'End Search' button. G!

Thanks for the fascinating thread.

Regards, John

MD: MD adoption vs MP3 etc

2001-05-08 Thread john . h . rolt

Memo from John H Rolt of PricewaterhouseCoopers

 Start of message text

Hi all

Just occurs to me that one possible factor for USA having adopted MP3
rather than MD, but the other way round here in the UK, is our slowness in
getting broadband internet available. This means that we don't have the
same convenient access to Napster et al (unless for instance we download
MP3s at work through a high-speed connection). So we put up with real-time
transfer from CDs etc. to our beloved MD, and reap the quality benefits
while we're at it.

Never thought I'd say it, but thanks British Telecom!

Just my 2d worth (that's old pence).

Regards, John ('scuse corporate gibberish)

which includes the following:

What Is The Frame Rate And The Transfer Compression Rate Of The DCM-M1

The Frame Rate is NTSC compliant (29.97 frames/sec., interlace 60 fields).
There are three rates of Transfer compression available for the video data
(292kbps (ATRAC) for audio data in either mode). They are:

8 Mbps (SP, Standard Play)
4~6 Mbps (VP, Variable Play)
4 Mbps (LP, Long Play)

ATRAC stands for Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding
Mbps stands for Millibytes per second

Assuming we are talking analogue copying, for those who need to handle
multiple in/out at the amplifier I can recommend QED audio products. Here's
the link to their page for 2-deck or 3-deck "tape deck" adapters
(http://www.qed.co.uk/switching/input.html). I got one years ago to
switch in and out signals between amp, TV, VCR, cassette and reel-to-reel
(nostalgia - not!) (but only a 2-deck adapter so I still had to do some
occasional juggling).

Vivanco (website: http://www.vivanco.com/pgo.html) have a 4-way - look
under Audio | Audio/Video distribution. I expect others (Tandy? Maplin?)
have similar.

All the best,
John (pse excuse corporate verbals).

is there any MD based bookshelf, mini system, micro system, or home decks
with a Microphone Input in it? And it must be readily available, of
course,
something still producing by the MD manufacturers ( don't advised me into
some sort of prehistory machine, please)!

Ivica

I was looking in the UK for something similar last year, as my wife wants
something similar for her classroom music teaching. I found some mini units with
mic input - however, they were mainly in grotesque (IMO) "teenager's bedroom
style" with lots of buttons and flashy lights and more importantly only seemed
to have mono recording via the mic (presumably for "karaoke" recording). So take
care to get what you want and beware the snake oil "sales executives" who
probably won't know!

Re: MD: in-car MD portable adaptor

 Start of message text

Hi all

I share the interest some of you eg Jim have expressed in using a portable
in-car (unfortunately I'm working with a cassette adaptor for now). I notice
that Argos in the UK offer a Goodmans adaptor kit which seems to consist of:
power supply adaptor
cassette slot adaptor
on-dash MD case *with* a built-in bracket which should enable you to hold onto
your precious MD portie.

The full URL seems to be:
http://www.argos.co.uk/argos/home.html?URI=http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/commerce/command/ExecMacro/ols-home.d2w/report

but if that doesn't work try http://www.argos.co.uk/ and work through. I don't
know if they supply outside UK but they are good and reliable here.

It's on my Xmas present list but I'd be interested to know if anyone else has
tried one and can comment?

Regards .. John (and please excuse corporate gibberish if Rick can't remove it!)

Re: MD: md-l-mimedigest V2 #728

2000-08-21 Thread john . h . rolt

Memo from John H Rolt of PricewaterhouseCoopers

 Start of message text

1 Mike Rosenlof ([EMAIL PROTECTED] asked:

Does anybody have a favorite bag/case for carrying an MD player plus
microphones, earphones, and a couple of discs? Mics are sound little
cardoid types, player is a sharp 722 if all of that matters. I'd like
something that offers a little protection plus pockets or compartments to
keep things organized...

I use a case from Case Logic (see http://www.casedirect.com/home.asp ) which I
bought from MVC. It's just the right size for my MZ-R30 and a few discs. But
before I found that I bought one of their cassette cases which had more room -
could be handy depending on the size of the mic.

2 Other topics: I'm following the CD vs MD vs MP3 with interest - personally
I'm still hooked on vinyl but they take a lotta room and I wouldn't let my
children touch them .. any other (classic) vinyl junkies out there? I bought my
JE520 deck from a guy who had high end (mostly Linn) audio and couldn't cope
with the quality reduction of MD - his loss, my gain at GBP50 (but I'm still not
chucking out the vinyl)!

3 Lastly, my tongue is hanging out till I can afford a scale factor edit deck
(may be a long while) - I do a lot of legit recording of live choral and
instrumental concerts and would really *lurve* to be able to edit down the noise
of applause between numbers without actually removing (all of) it.

Please excuse all the copyright blurb (if you can't edit it off, Rick?).

Regards all; John

Re: MD: portable MD with mic recording?

2000-05-22 Thread john . h . rolt

Hi all!
My wife's a music teacher and needs a portable (not personal) MD system to be
able to replay CDs and MD to classes and individuals - so far, so good. But she
also needs to be able to make reasonable quality, stereo recordings of her
pupils' performances. We can't find a boombox or mini/micro system (if the
latter, we would have to be able to strap it together to move it from room to
room) on sale in UK with this facility. One answer would be a MD-compatible
system with a separate portable, but this would be more vulnerable to being
"lifted", possibly more expensive and less convenient. Can anyone advise on a
suitable system or have I missed something (eg can one record via a mic into the
line input? If so, what sort of mic?). It does seem dumb to me that with MD so
brilliant for live recording so few units (other than portables) have stereo mic
inputs!
Thanks and regards, John Rolt.
