Re: MD: Playstation 2 as a MD source?

2001-09-30 Thread Thomas Stewart

I also can report that the PS2 is great as an optical-out source for
recording MDs. I was overjoyed to find that my PS2 had a more
practical
use than vegeing out with games! I've also found that the PS2 seems
to
read audio CDs better, without skips etc., than some CD players -
which is
reassuring when you're copying whole CDs without monitoring them.

Talking about CD-skips when recording MDs... I recently thought of a
quick
check to see if the MD you recorded has any skips or glitches from the
CD
source. I found that every skip during a recording created an extra
track
mark, so the number of tracks on the MD additional to the number on
the CD
source would tell me straight-away how many problem areas you had to
correct (cleaning CD, then deleting and re-recording certain tracks,
etc...). I found this useful if I don't have time to listen through a
newly recorded MD.

Can anyone else confirm that this always works?

I'm considering buying a Playstation 2; as I don't have a CD player
with
optical out (and am happy with the one I've got, which has no digital
out), would the PS2 be suitable for recording digitally to MD? Does
it
pass trackmarks and work just like a CD player?

Simon

That's interesting about that skipping technique. I didn't realize it would
do that. I had a CD skip in there while recording, but I didn't check for
extra tracks (I was pretty quick to stop the recording though).

Does the PS2 play audio CD-RWs?

The original PlayStation (PS1??) plays audio CD-RWs no problem, so I
imagine that the PS2 would too.
If you want me to try it to be sure, let me know I will...

I only use my PS2 for recording audio from CD to MD, and it works really
really well! The CD player for the PS2 is pretty sparse, but it gets the
job done with stuff like program and shuffle play, etc. And yes, it passes
trackmarks correctly too. :)

Does the system allow titling via USB keyboards as well?

If you have a USB-PS/2 adapter, they can :-)

Does such a beast even exist?

Yes, I have one running my USB mouse into the ps/2 mouse port, the same
can be done with keyboards.

Umm... you can't play MiniDiscs on it, so I guess it really isn't an issue
here.

You do realize, don't you, that before there was the PS2 (PlayStation
2) there was the PS/2 (Personal System/2)...a personal computer built
by IBM? You also realize, don't you, that before those computers,
keyboards used a large 5-pin DIN connector, and that since, computers
now use a 6-pin mini DIN connector? Well, those 6-pin Mini DIN
connectors are, by and large in the computer industry, called PS/2
connectors, because the first computers to use those connectors were
PS/2 computers.

I think I understand the confusion (because I really don't understand that
first message). A PS/2 keyboard is not the same as a keyboard for a
Playstation 2. PS/2 is a type of connector that attaches a normal computer
keyboard to a computer.

PS/2 keyboards can also be used for titling. Can USB keyboards? Certain
systems boast the ability to connect to a computer via USB. Does the system
allow titling via USB keyboards as well?

There was a small rumor that instead of a VMU like the dreamcast or whatever
memory thing the current playstation uses, they would put a md data drive in
there for pretty much unlimited game saves, i doubt that's gonna happen
though.

Speaking of that, didn't Sony mention some sort of MD drive for the thing
when it was in development? What ever happened to that, is it still gonna
 have that?

I thought i heard that they were not going to use MD's for the playstation
 2. They were going to use DVD's.
