My observation is that this had been std in the hifi sales industry for as long
as I've been going to shops ... at least from the 70's onward. Except for the
owners almost exclusively very young salespersons man the operations and then
leave when they find 'a real job.' The thing is, there's so much to know about
this hobby and the equipment it is by luck that we run into a salesperson who is
also really into the hobby and knows their stuff. I don't expect it to be the
norm for this reason.

With mail order components usually considerable less than what the brick and
morter stores can sell for I guess that's the best that can be done ... except
for the high end boutiques. I find the boutiques often have the opposite
problem ... too much information! g

I suppose there's no short cut for knowing your stuff when you walk in.

RE: MD: MD and Best Buy

Daryl, just how bad is MD doing at Best Buy? Does it sell at all or not
enough
to meet a stocking requirement? Some sales people act like they didn't even
know
the store carried MD or what it is. (Glenn)

Since I don't work in sales (and hardly ever find myself in the home theatre
department), I couldn't tell you. I tried to educate the salespeople,
however, about the LP4 mode when I once printed out a webpage about it and
placed it in their department binder, but it later disappeared. Evidently
no one cared enough to learn anything about it. I just wasted my time.

so imo all best buy employees are about as stupid as you can get.
(Matt Wall)

Oh, no offence, but for saying *that*, *you're* as stupid as one can get.
To make such a general statement is indicative of a grave lack of
intelligence. Don't post again until your I.Q. rises a few points (By
the way, perhaps you are not aware of it, but there are two competing high
resolution audio formats -- the persons you had spoken with might have been
thinking of SACD. In any case, they were at least half-correct, as it is
not likely that Best Buy will ever sell DVD Audio music recordings or
*dedicated* DVD Audio players. Best Buy is not in the business of catering
to the high-end market. If you're interested in high-end product, check out
their newly-acquired Magnolia Hi-Fi chain of stores in the Pacific
Northwest.)

Then they got tighter and tighter. When they cut the sales people's
commission
down so low that there was no incentive to sell anything, I think that was
the
last blow.(las)

Best Buy hasn't had salespeople who worked on commission for nearly a
decade. Obviously, their salespeople are doing a poor job communicating
that.

Daryl

Daryl, I think the writer was referring to CC in this remark. The lack of
commission sales at BB is, on the whole, a plus for me. I usually know more or
less what I'm looking for when I arrive ... all I need is help locating the
specific product and any real time info on bugs, maintenance, etc. So BB's
environment is a breath of fresh air compared to CC. I do recall a day not all
that long ago that CC was a pleasure to visit. I'm not sure exactly what
happened, but something clearly did.

I know this semi knowledgeable but loser of a person (he is too lazy to get up and
go to work) who was hired as a manager at a new BB. Also a young friend of mine
applied there, until he learned about the lack of commission.

This is in upscale Plymouth Meeting, PA. They were offering their sales people
about $7.50 an hour!!! While just down the road, Home Improvement is paying
between $9 and $10 an hour for the cashiers (and that was 2 years ago, when my
daughter worked there until she found a real job). So I know that sales people at
BB don't get commissions and don't even get decent pay.

They don't pay much commission any longer. That doesn't help.

anyone who works at best buy, no offense to anyone but i dont believe
anything any of them say any more since recently purchasing a DVD audio
player and when going to best buy asking a kid if they carried DVD-audio was
told they will never carry it. then i asked to talk to a manager, the
regional manager was in the store at the time and he informed me that they
aren't going to carry dvd audio and will never carry it, even though they
have a player in stock. so imo all best buy employees are about as stupid
as you can get. just my 2 cents.

At least they were both consistent. They both said that they will never carry
it.
