If manufacturers added this useful feature, it can come in handy if the deck
is deployed in a school or similar environment for students or others to
listen to MDs on (MDs being the ideal medium for keeping music education,
language-learning and other educational audio material on because it is hard
to damage the discs).

Also, in our church, we use MD as a "cart machine" for backing tracks during
praise and worship and when we are between services; especially when we
fellowship with each other after the service, we sometimes find little
fingers discovering the controls on our MD deck. As a matter of course, we
make sure that all discs are "locked-out" using the write-protect switch to
prevent any problems with over-recording or unwanted editing.

This feature can be implemented by use of a button on the remote control
much like the C-LOCK mode on a VCR (which stops others from operating a VCR
which is doing something like recording your favourite TV show).

With regards,

Simon Mackay

Joost listed,

among others.

| Do newer decks have any of these functions (i own a MDS-JE520)

All the JB9xx decks have date stamp, I am fairly sure. As to Name Stamp, if
you're referring to Moji Stamp on Sharp portables, no Sony decks have it.

Hi

Hello, i've been thinking about some simple little things
 Sony might add to
 their decks.
...

I've ALWAYS thought that this would be a great idea too! I'd like to have
my MD deck out at parties or whatever - my deck (Sony 520) itself is pretty
solid and the MDs themselves are too, and I'd rather have someone trash a
NZ$5 MD than a NZ$30 CD.

But I'm not too keen on some boozed person wiping all my MDs with a touch of
two buttons or re-titling my favourite MD "Get it down ya!" !!

My R3 after 4 1/2 years and my JE500 and E40 after nearly four years are
kenahorra still working, but let's not talk about the JE510s I went through.

Perhaps you should bring a portable player to those parties instead of your
520. Also, open the discs' write-protects: the extra trouble to eject the
discs, close the write-protects, and reinsert the discs might be just what
keeps a joker from trying anything. It certainly will make it take more work
than just touching two buttons.

Finally, with a 520 you can clone the TOCs to scratch discs that you leave at
home; if someone screws around with deletions or titles, you can restore the
original information as soon as you get home.

Sure the law of averages will allow you to have several Sony units that are very
reliable. But your 510 only strengthens my point.

After they they fixed my MZ-1 2 times it worded fine. My son has it (I'm tempted
to give him one of my newer units so that he will not destroy my MZ-1 because I
really believe that working models will be worth something in the future).

It not just that it will be old. It is the uniqueness of the unit.

Off topic again:
Do you realize that there is NO word in English that can be used to describe the
relationship between the parents of the husband and wife. Thin about it. They
are not in laws to each other. But in Yiddish there is a specific word that
describes the relationship.

Thanks to the comedian Mike Myers, Yiddish has become an "in thing". I wish I
was fluent it it. I understand a little and speak even less. A lot of neat
expressions.
