Exactly. Why don't you simply borrow a stereo VCR, connect it to your amp
with phonos, and record in LP with a 5 hour tape?Switch the source to
'EXT' first. You can then get some decent sleep, and copy it to MD at your
leisure.

John.

  All,

I have heard of people using a VCR to tape audio off the radio. I
 don't
know how well that works though with a 6 hour tape.
Yeah it's good, I use 3 hour tapes on Long Play for 6 hours to record
audio, it sounds alright. Slightly better then tape??? I don't know.
Probably. Well worth it if you have LP video machine.

For recording with a VCR i use a special Peritel cable for copying tapes
from camescope. On one end you've got
a classical peritel an on the other end three RCA plug 2 for the stereo
sound and one for the video signal from the camescope.
Plug the stereo RCA's on your audio system (out tape plug on your amps) and
set the source of the VCR on out/aux then
play record or just program the VCR to start at an fixed hour (don't forget
to let the radio on). On mine i've
got Long Play recording and was able to record an 8 hours radio program on a
240 tape.

Drive for it.
And I've already an AWE but a 64Gold which has a Coax Output.

Yeah, but you can also record other stuff on it, and if you've got a good
recording utility, you can encode the WAV to MP3 on the fly, I don't know of
any program that can do this, but I know they Exist, and if the Encoder
could proces at a rate of say around 70% (that's encode 7/10) of a minute
per minute, you'd only need about 1/3 of the 5.5 Gig, and the drives aren't
that expensive, here you can get a 6.5 Gig for around $150, now what's that,
I'm sure you can afford that. We pay that much every two months on our phone
bill.

Hi David!

Thankx for that big guidance :)). I think it's not so important if I
miss a few seconds. I'll buy a portable soon, but one which cannot
record, because the MDS-JE510 is enough and I don't need to
record something when I'm outside. I thought of buying a Sharp MD-
S301 (Btw.: Anyone knows if this one is good? Does someone
have this device?).

Greetz, DeeKay/Matthias

 Matthias asked,

 | Does it hurt my device if I record 9hours
 | without a break? Because there is a big DJ Event on a German
 | Radio station and I don't want to stay up till 5o'clock in the morning
 | for listening to it (I'll set my alarm clock for every 74mins:)
 | I've the famous Sony MDS-JE510 (Japanese Version :)

The unit ought to be able to record for nine hours (for a Malaysian 510, I
wouldn't be so confident); the only thing is, if you get up only every
seventy-four minutes, no matter how quickly you spring out of bed and get
over to the 510 (or no matter how quickly you reach for the 510 if it's next
to your bed), there's going to be time to write the TOC of the disc that
you're about to remove, time to switch discs, and time for the 510 to read
the TOC of the new disc. If you do that during a break or a commercial, no
big deal, but if they are in the middle of something you want to hear you can
miss thirty seconds of it to do a disc switch.

Best thing would be to borrow a second recorder, and do something like this
schedule, starting just before 8 PM:

 1959: insert disc 1 in unit 1
2000: start recording disc 1, insert disc 2 in unit 2, listen 73 minutes
 2113: start recording disc 2
2114: disc 1 fills; eject disc 1, insert disc 3 in unit 1, listen 72 minutes
 2226: start recording disc 3
2227: disc 2 fills; eject disc 2, insert disc 4 in unit 2, nap 72 minutes
 2339: start recording disc 4
2340: disc 3 fills; eject disc 3, insert disc 5 in unit 1, nap 72 minutes
 0052: start recording disc 5
0053: disc 4 fills; eject disc 4, insert disc 6 in unit 2, nap 72 minutes
 0205: start recording disc 6
0206: disc 5 fills; eject disc 5, insert disc 7 in unit 1, nap 72 minutes
 0318: start recording disc 7
0319: disc 6 fills; eject disc 6, insert disc 8 in unit 2, nap 72 minutes
0431: start recording disc 8, sleep until morning

That way you'll get everything, even the parts that you were awake for but
couldn't pay much attention to because you were concentrating on switching
discs, with just under two minutes of overlap at each disc change. Of
course, since you'll be groggy during most of the operations, it could help
to write out the schedule on paper (auf Deutsch), keep it next to the
recorders, and cross steps out as you do them.

One tip that will save a few seconds more at switch time: make sure beforehand
that there is a TOC already written on each disc, if only by saving a disc
title. It always takes longer to read the TOC of a virginal disc because
recorders recheck to make sure there really isn't any TOC yet; if there is a
TOC, it is read in right away. That may not apply so much here, as the
schedule allows seventy-two minutes for each TOC read already.

Matthias followed up,

| Thankx for that big guidance :)).

You're welcome.

| I think it's not so important if I miss a few seconds.

Well, this is the problem: of course there will be stretches where you won't
mind missing a few seconds, but you can't guarantee that the points where
you'll be changing discs will all occur during the less important parts. You
might find that the time to change discs comes right in the middle of some-
thing you really want to hear and to keep. That's why I think it's a good
idea to arrange a little overlap if you can borrow or even rent a second
recorder.

Matthias continued,

| Renting or borrowing this unit is not a good idea. Because I just
| noticed that this will be since the 2nd October forever from 20-5am
| every saturday. So I don't think I'll rent a unit every saturday,
| But the one at saturday is very important because it's from one of
| Germanys biggest discos, many djs and so on :).

So that's the only time you'd borrow (or rent) another recorder, just for
that one installment that's important to you. Were you planning to record
it every weekend or just on October 2?

DWT (too far away to be able to lend Matthias a recorder for that weekend)

Hmm... if I hooked my out-of-service 510 back up and got it around the
protected bug, and if I used eighty-minute discs, I could do nine hours
without a swap. What a spendthrift!

Just buy a big HD (they aren't as expensive as they used to be), lemme
calculate 9x60x60x44100x2x2= around 5.5 Gb and record directly on PC, if you
have a reasonable soundcard sound quality should be just fine, I use a $30
Yamaha soundcard, and the program CoolEdit (which has an awesome
noise-filter), and it sounds just fine.
Then do an MP3 compression, or port directly to MD..., or you can put it on
CD with a CD burner if you only wanna listen at home.

tip: use a SoundBlaster Live (not the Value edition, they are about
$200-$250, if they are as expensive as here) which has Digital output, both
RCA Cinch (Coax) and optical TOSLINK, and inputs of both types, this allows
for easy porting between PC and MD. I'm gonna buy one myself one of these
 days.
