As a loving parent of two surviving former toddlers, I have to say that the
choking hazards are said infants, who will attempt to place any object that
will fit, into their mouths. It's your job to stop 'em doing it (you hope).
If your MD deck is in reach, expect to find unusual objects posted into the
disk slot. I think it's valid to argue that toys and other stuff designed
for little people should not have small bits that come off and choke the
little darlings, but I don't think this extends to domestic electronics.

Should I always keep the plugs on the TOSLink connectors whenever I am not
using the connectors or can I not have the plugs on them?

The plugs keep out dust, which might later end up in the signal path. The
dust MIGHT stop the optical link working, in which case you would need to
clean it out with a Q-tip.

Depends on how dusty the operating environment is.

My recommendation would be to plug in your optical cables in the back and
just stash the cables back there when not in use. This way, you don't have
to worry about covering the sockets nor do you need to disconnect/reconnect
cables all the time. And after all, it is in the back, who's going to
notice? If it's in a situation where the back is uncovered and easily seen
and accessible, then there's a bit of a problem 3#-)

In this situation I would be inclined to remove the dust caps and place a small
piece of black insulation tape (available at most electronics and car
accessories shops) over the holes. You could leave them open without much chance
of anything happening, but if you have a young kid around I would say they are
just as likely to stuff something in the hole (say a piece of choccy cake) and
then you may be contemplating feeding them the dust cap... ;o)

When in doubt, make sure SOMETHING is covering the hole. you don't want
dust getting into your optics. It's not going to be as bad as if it got
inside the MD player itself, but it could still cause problems when recording
if it got clogged. If you've got lil kids around, you may want to tape over
the caps, or try glue/epoxy a small makeshift tether to them and the unit
itself, so they can be removed from their socket, but won't get lost.

This will keep the youngsters from trying to swallow them, and should keep
them from getting lost.

 Hi everyone!

I have noticed that a lot of home digital-audio equipment that is equipped
with optical inputs or outputs is often fitted with removeable plastic caps
on these Toslink connectors. I have a few reservations about these caps. For
example, if you ran an optical digital link and then had to disconnect that
link for situations such as having one of the devices repaired, you would
have to replace the caps which can easily get lost.

They also present a choking hazard with toddlers if you are in a situation
where you have to leave the equipment unsupervised at a reachable distance
 with its back panel showing.

You can always put a small hole through the toslink cap and attach a
piece of fishing wire to it. Attach the other end of the fishing wire to
the chassis of the audio equipment. When you are using the toslink unit
the cap is hanging by the fishing wire.
