John Ervine wrote: Royce Engler wrote: Terminology check...is ADA the same as ALDA? Sorta. ADA = Atmosphärendruckabhängiger Volllastanschlag Which roughly means atmospheric pressure compensation. ALDA = Atmosphärische Ladedruckanpassung Which roughly means atmospheric pressure and charge-air compensation. In simpler terms, an ADA provides fuel enrichment on non-turbo cars, while an ALDA provides fuel enrichment on turbo cars. NOT quite. The ADA reduces fuel as atmospheric pressure goes down. The purpose is to prevent smoking and still maintain maximum power possible at higher altitudes. It does NOT enrich anything, it reduces fuel as air pressure drops but keeping the fuel level at the maximum value that the available air can completely burn. An ALDA also reduces fuel as air pressure drops, BUT since the turbo raises air pressure and the way it's calibrated, the most usual ALDA action is to enrich fuel. Theoretically the ADA could do the same thing, BUT it and the pump are constructed and calibrated so that maximum fuel output is at about sea level and it does nothing but reduce fuel output as pressure drops. [MBZ] OM603--minor IP attachment oil leaks
Listers, I'm planning soon to RR the intake manifold on my '87 300D to replace the glow plugs and also do all the standard wear items that become easily accessible when one has the intake off an OM603. I notice that I have two minor oil leaks down the side of the IP, one of which seems to be coming from the vicinity of the large (17mm or so) nut where the STOP lever attaches to the IP. The other leak is from the threads of a cylindrical doohickey screwed into the top of the IP, just inboard of the vacuum shutoff unit and in front of the ALDA, with a large black electrical connector on top. Do these sound like common oil leakage points, or should I look harder for leaks somewhere else? If the leaks are where they think they are, how do I stop them (while I have the intake off making access easy)? I don't see any kind of gasket, o-ring, or seal that could be worn and need replacement where either assembly attaches to the IP. Or do I just live with them and count myself lucky that the engine doesn't leak anywhere else? ;) Thanks, Alex Chamberlain [EMAIL PROTECTED] '87 300D Turbo '01 VW Beetle TDI

My 240d 3.0 is not for sale. I have way too much in it, especially now that is has a low mile euro 3.0 in it. I plan to use this vehicle as a test bed for WVO and bio diesel mods. I plan on configuring custom injectors and with the help of the fellow who does IPs for me we will play with pump settings. I bought that car from a customer who moved onto a 300sd. That car has been in my service since it had 108k on the clock. Now it has around 177k. Zero rust, clean '83 240ds are hard to come by that have been maintained to a T. Plus it is a manny tranny car. This comment is not directed at Marshall specifically, but how can someone assume that a store brand product is inferior to a name brand product? Having spent most of my career in the manufacturing business and having worked with thousands of suppliers, I can say with some confidence that many store brand products fall off the exact same manufacturing lines as the equivalent name brand product. In most cases, there is no Quality difference. Nada, none. In the case of this oil, it might be helpful to know who manufactured the product. Concerning base stock, Dino is Dino these days. The manufacturers know how to manufacture engine oil from multiple types of crude oil. The key is the additive package and the C rating plus the fact that all engine oils have to be able to intermix pretty much dictates what has to be in there. Re: [MBZ] another stupid oil question
Tom Hargrave wrote: This comment is not directed at Marshall specifically, but how can someone assume that a store brand product is inferior to a name brand product? GREAT question. Of the major brand diesel oils, Delo 400 and Mobil 1300 have repeatedly been shown to just be better oil than MOST other oils that meet the same SAE standard. This has not just been of the quality of the base oil (which has been superior - all dino oil is NOT the same - there is group I oil and there is group II oil and then there are the so-called group III synthetics that are actually hydrocracked dino, and the grpoup IV and V synthetics - but boy will you play hell trying to get any oil maker to tell you how much of each of those is in their oil), but also their robust additive package. These Chevron and Mobil commercial oils have a history of surpassing a standard that other oils seldom have achieved! You have NO legal right to expect Chevron/Texaco or Exxon/Mobil to continue to meet the high standards they have set and maintained over the years, but if they slip much they would do themselves and their shareholders a great disservice. When you purchase house brand oil, you have ONLY the backing of the house (who probably awarded the contract to the lowest bidder) and they have little to loose as long as the product they sell meets the standards they advertise. Just because two products meet some standard does NOT warrant that they are identical, but only that they at least meet THAT standard. Remember also that the SAE/API standard does NOT meet Mercedes standards for engine oil (for either gas or diesel engines). Mercedes has a considerably higher standard and suggests that you use the SAE standard for selecting oil ONLY if oil meeting the appropriate ACEA or or even more demanding Mercedes standards are NOT available. There are many FINE products sold as house brands or under different labels. One of the major sources of private brand oil and other automotive products is Valvoline. They make a lot of private label oil. They also make all of the Mercedes anti-freeze sold in the US (made using the Mercedes formula) and sell it themselves as Zerex G-05. As far as I can tell (based on a quick look - might have missed something), the only Valvoline oils to meet current Mercedes 228/229 standards are synthetics or synthetic blends and not all are available in the US. Another private label product is Caterpillar synthetic oil. It's Mobil Delvac 1 with a CAT label on it - GREAT oil, but it's nothing more or less than Delvac 1 that's available from any Exxon/Mobil distributor and it's cost is about the same. The very cheapest source of Mobil Delvac 1 oil is to buy Mobil 1 Truck SUV 5W-40 (same oil, different name) from Wal-Mart where it can be purchased for about $20/5 qts. (Wal-Mart is the largest purchaser of Mobil oil in the world). That sure beats the $23+/gallon price I can get at the local Exxon/Mobil distributor. Umm, no. It may not have a floor. They look for things like frame rot around the suspension points and the frame rails. If the floor is patched, either metal or fiberglass it would still pass. rumor has it that Kaleb wrote: OK, concerning dino oil. Anybody know/heard/used the oils you get a farm and fleet type stores? The one here sells Mystic and Harvest King, both diesel rated, have all the ratings etc. Just circumstantial evidence. I have 3 cars that the engines have failed on. In all three I was running Mystic. The reason that I was using Mystic is because they all burned/leaked so much oil that I couldn't afford synthetic. So, because they were oil-consuming engines, they were probably not in very good shape. But after the third engine began to get worse I said Hey, maybe it's the oil! and choose to pay the couple dollars more for Mobil or Delo (still dino oil) from Wal-Mart. That third engine is out of service because of head-gasket problems. My conclusion - the oil _may_ be fine, but _for_me_ its worth the small price difference to put in oil that I have a bit more confidence in. Philip, not an oil expert

They look for things like frame rot around the suspension points and the frame rails. If the floor is patched, either metal or fiberglass it would still pass. Personally, I've had many cars pass that had 3 plus diameter holes in the floor. Then again, I knew the inspector well. Go look at it unless it is dirt cheap. Re: [MBZ] OT: alternative energy - was SMART somethingorother
Back when, I got jazzed about the Solar Power Satellite thing, called up the guy working on the idea at the time (not quite the inventor, but he took the idea and started working it) and got a job working for him. Did some analyses, and it could actually work quite well, except that a rather large area would be required for receiving antennas (rectifying antennas - rectennas they were called) because you would need to keep the power densities of the microwave beams (lasers could work too, but less efficient) low enough not to fry things that flew through them (birds and airplanes mostly) and you would need to size them for few gigawatts to make the numbers work. But there is a lot of dis/un-used land that would be OK to site them on with minimal affects, transmission to load centers would then be an issue. But the overall efficiency of the transmission is quite high (90% or better if I recall), and with improvements in solar cells on the satellites or another conversion means (solar cells were about the cheapest and least difficult to deal with) the whole deal could deliver clean power just about anywhere at reasonable cost. The biggest issue was launching to orbit, but even that had some interesting options that could really lower the cost to orbit from the earth's surface. Building stuff (sheet aluminum to make the structure and solar cells in rolls) on the moon and pushing it earth orbit looked to be the easiest actually, using adequate resources on the moon (aluminum and silicon and vacuum and lots of clean power) and the low energy to get from there to earth orbit. The moon would actually not be too bad a place to do the manufacturing, what with evidence of water there now and advances in automation, and a replicating base could be established with not too much stuff having to be sent there. But even now with $50 or $60/bbl oil, the economics (ansd $ are the best least common denominator for assessing options) probably still favor oil and nukes. And even back then there were people squawking that this approach would have huge negative effects, etc. though they could not really justify that opinion with any sort of rational argument. --R [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Andrew wrote: My dream is that technological breakthroughs will lead to ever more clever ways to harness the power of the sun (photovoltaics), foster energy conservation, and reduce emissions from the use of fossil fuels. There are even some intriguing developments in nuclear power that were unforeseeable a decade ago. The problem with sunlight is that the power density at the surface of the earth is simply too low for most modern energy uses. I don't remember the figures now, but read about studies that looked at the power density in watts per square meter at optimum conditions, and then figured the area required to produce the same amount of watts as found in other sources (i.e. gasoline, nuclear, coal, whatever) and even assuming 100% efficiency for the photovoltaic cell, an enormous amount of area is required to produce the same amount of power, say in 15 gallons of gas. It's really simply a matter of physics. If you then look at the amount of energy required to make the solar cells, and the industrial waste generated, throw in a few cloudy days, and the picture looks worse and worse. What I found to be really exciting is the idea of putting those solar cells in orbit to cut the atmospheric losses, and beaming the energy down in the form of microwaves or a laser or somesuch (concept was proven in Canada a few years back using a high altitude solar powered UAV to stay airborne for weeks at a time while beaming down microwaves). Or build the 'space elevator' and transmit the electricity down the cable. Now we just need to kick NASA to the curb and let the free market take over space exploration/exploitation and we'll have some real fun! Very respectfully, /s/ LCDR Meade M. [MBZ] Galvanized steel in cars
There has been a thread discussing coated steel in the bodies of MB's and some talk of the 210 not using galvanized steel. Body Engineering is my profession so I feel pretty confident in saying that I doubt that any new cars sold in the US today use uncoated steels in their exterior sheet metal components. Industry standard is that all sheet metal which has an interface to the outside elements is coated. There are generally two types of coatings , 'Galvanized' and 'Galvaneel' steel. I'm not a materials expert so I can't really comment on the differences. The coatings are applied to the steel before the parts are pressed. Bodies are not dipped in zinc. The real issue with the newer cars is the quality and quantity of the coatings which are applied. There was a big push in the 80's and early nineties to improve the corrosion performance of vehicles. There has been a more recent push to take cost out of the vehicle. Thus thinner coatings on the base sheet metal. I hope this adds clarity to the issue and not further confusion. Ralph Wasserbaech
