It is normally assumed that we are talking about US car unless otherwise
specified. As I said, there were no other diesel 124 wagons except for
the 87. That was talking about US car.

Re: [MBZ] Steering column lock 82TDt

2005-09-18 Thread Richard Murdoch
Has anyone "studied" the workings of the steering column locking mechanism?

I have replaced the lock cylinder but the steering column lock binds when
the wheel is in a certain position. Once you hear that sliding shaft click
into place you know it will be hard to release it.

Turning the steering wheel to the right releases it enough to allow the key to
turn the cylinger but sometimes it takes a heavy hand. Because of a problem
with her right hand my wife cannot manage to do this at times.

I have a junk lock and have taken it apart so that I can see how it works and
have concluded that there are several parts that could cause the system to
bind.

Is there any one part that usually causes this?

I'm wondering about cutting off the end of the sliding or taking it out.

I would rather fix it.

I would appreciate any ideas

I'd say the shop vac might be okay if you've never had anything but
diesel in the tank. Gasoline is problematic because it gives off
flammable vapors; diesel really doesn't. For the same reason, I would
avoid using a shop vac-based oil sucker to suck the oil out of a
gasoline engine, if you have reason to suspect gasoline dilution of the oil.

The ONLY year that a 124 diesel wagon was imported to the US by MBUSA
was 1987. Any 124 TD diesel in the US wagon other than an '87 with the
OM603.96 engine is a gray market car.

There were lots of 124 diesel wagons sold in other parts of the world -
with OM601, 602 and 603 engines - some turbo but most naturally
aspirated.

The number of 300Es with 5 speeds (that was a special order option, but
VERY few were delivered that way in the US) is considerably smaller than
the number of 190Ds with 5 speeds. I know of dozens of 190Ds 5 spds but

A little gasoline will NOT reliably kill algae (and it's a poor anti-gel
- use REAL anti-gel - Mercedes stopped recommending gasoline more than
20 years ago). Making sure you regularly remove ALL the water in the
fuel (water condenses out of the air in the less than full tank EVERY
time the ambient temperature drops below the dew point of the air) will
prevent algae - the algae lives in the water and EATS the fuel. Algae
can't survive/grow if there is NO water in the fuel.

Yes, it was, I've seen several 300TD 2.5L in Evansville alone. Same
years as the sedan diesels. Quite rare compared to 300e sedans, and
even the TE isn't very common.

Re: [MBZ] Biodiesel Usage Report - The Reality

In the winter I mix a couple of gallons of gasoline to take of diesel on my
300SD this makes it start much easier and the gasoline helps kill the algae.

Likely you have "algae" in the tank, and this may or may not be related
to biodiesel use -- the biodiesel tends to clean the tank (it's a
better solvent than regular diesel), but the problem is pretty common
on that age Benz.

You will need to run the tank as low as you can (the screen will plug
again as it gets really low), then drain completely and remove the tank
and have it cleaned. Install a new screen, and you will be home free.

In the mean time, carry several pre-filters and a new main filter, you
are likely to have plugging problems until you get the tank cleaned.

Black crud collecting in the prefilter is a sure sign of algae in the
tank

One of the stations in Mt. Vernon has biodiesel, I think I'll get some
next fillup. I also have some old gasoline contaminated with diesel
fuel that needs to be fed to one of the diesels to get rid of it.

S, you'll hurt the feeling of the 1992 300TDt sitting in the
driveway.
Mind since I"m in Canada it's a bit easier to get such vehicles into
our country versus the paranoid USA.

PS the 92 has the new w124 body style cladding and as of 05/91 they
introduced lots of engineering changes to fix things...

PPS it was not cheap. (alas)

Just to off topic a bit but 190D with a stick are hard to find, 300's
can be found all day long here on the west coast.
What gives?
What makes the 190d's so rare?

Thanks, OK Don. Apparently the seller is full of sh*t. I asked him at

and even got a little indignant. Wonder if his other claims are equally

Ask for the VIN number. That will settle it. There were 201.122s sold

I have a lot of 113 parts that some of you may be interested in. I
know the majority of the listners out there are diesel nuts ( as am I )
but wanted the few 113 owners to know that this stuff is going on Ebay
under MBZ280. Most of it is used, from a rusted out car that was taken
apart here recently. Take a look, you might find that odd part you
have been after for a while (c:

Run, don't walk. This guy is like a blackmailer, if you jump at the price
increase he will just do it again, or do something else stupid. That sort of
behaviour is not normal. He may be just a harmless oddball, when all is said
and done, but there are easier ways to buy a car.

I learned years ago never to deal with people I don't take to, when either
buying or selling.

So where is this thing?
Maybe I can offer him Kelly Blue Book Private Party for it to soften him up
for you? $655 according to KBB.com for 150k, good condition, well loaded.
If he balks, I'll offer him $200 and tell him blue book trade in is $213.
If the above it too outlandish, I can offer him $1500, KBB dealer retail on
a perfect car is $1535 with 150k on it. Then I can remind him he isn't
selling some rare exotic, he's selling a 20 year old, $25k car. What
does he think a 20 year old Caprice or Silverado is worth?
