Re: [MBZ] Location of W124 CD Changer
Here's a belated Thanks, Kaleb - I have the CD Changer and have the brackets on the way. Are you saying I'll need some wiring harness adapters to hook into the factory wiring? That's not a nice way for the factory to play! They put a Becker in-dash radio in then run wiring to the trunk for a Becker CD Changer - and *still* they want to require an adapter?? Howdy Everyone, OK, Thanks to Kaleb, I pulled the right side trunk liner back saw a couple of things I need help understanding how they work with the radio in the dash. You'll soon see from my lack of the use of proper terms that my experience with this stuff is pretty limited. OK, in the trunk under the liner on the passenger side, there's a box with fins on it which I assume is an amplifier with cooling fins. Next to that (on the opposite side of the trunk hinge) is another box - - what the heck is that ? Where does my CD Changer hook in? So, there's a AM-FM Cassette radio in my dash - is that considered the head unit? I hear I need a wiring adapter - which I find ludicrous when I'm using OEM equipment with factory wiring - (but that's another problem) -- is that something a car stereo shop will have or can make? Does it come from the dealer? I'm trying to see if the place I got the Changer has it but that may be wishful thinking. Re: [MBZ] air compressors
Do not use anything but the oil specified by your manufacturer! Especially a detergent oil like M1! What happens is that the additive package breaks down and gums up the works. Oil doesn't wear out! The additives do and leave a mess of gunk behind. At the very least use a non detergent single weight oil if you cannot find any other specs. Jeff Zedic Toronto 87 300TD
Re: [MBZ] Lost in the world of Stereos - W124
Larry, The head unit is the stereo in the dash since it controls every part of the stereo system. What you see in the trunk with the cooling fins is the amplifier. They are usually mounted in a place where air can pass over them to keep them cool. I'm guessing the black box you saw near the hinges was a crossover. That is used to separate the various signals to the speakers from the amp, lows to the woofers and highs to the tweeters. You should see speaker wires running from that box to each speaker setup. 69 280 SEL 120,000 Miles 72 350SL 108,000 Miles 2004 VW Passat 4 Motion 1999 Mazda Miata -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thu, 27 Apr 2006 20:00:59 -0400 Subject: [MBZ] Lost in the world of Stereos - W124 Howdy Everyone, OK, Thanks to Kaleb, I pulled the right side trunk liner back saw a couple of things I need help understanding how they work with the radio in the dash. Re: [MBZ] air compressors
I went by the tool repair shop (factory service) to get a DeWalt part, asked if they had the synthetic oil for my DeWalt compressor as it came from the factory. The service guy said they just use a straight 30W (I think he said) NON-detergent when they service a/cs (and no they did not have that stuff). In any case, you can buy compressor oil (stuff I have has a red dye, looks like tranny fluid) at many places, my guess is that is what it is. --R Wakin's wrote: I believe most take the special air compressor oil. Re: [MBZ] Waterpump change on M103
6 hours, almost to the minute. You must remove the bracket for the PS pump, but need to remove the pump, just loosen it. You don't need to touch the AC bracket or pump. You also do not need to remove the screw that holds the heater pipe, it has a slot. A real bear to get back if if you do (as I did). Make sure you have a new o-ring for that pipe, and I would replace the short hose between thermostat housing and pump (or whatever it is) -- you really must remove the pump to change it. A swivel will be required to get to the rear bolts on the WP. Make sure the surface of the head is clean, you don't want to have to do this again because the o-ring leaked. Without PS, this is about a 30 min job. Peter

Re: [MBZ] 1982 MB 300CDT
I have the inner panel off and electrically everything is fine to the motor. That's harder to determine than you might think. Hook a test light to the two terminals and actuate the switch. It should light up both ways. The terminals are both 'hot' normally, the switch selectively grounds one of them. Does anyone know if there is an internal limit switch in the motor. No limit switches, the motors just stall at end of travel. -- Jim
Re: [MBZ] Questions about valve adjustment and my 1981 300CD
My second problem has to do with valve adjustment. I'm having a VERYYY hard time adjusting the last exhaust valve. There isn't enough room to swing the wrench without hitting the firewall, so I can't adjust it more than one turn. Is there a way around this?(thinking about bending/cutting the end of the wrench to get more space). Other than this, things seem to be normal. The whole mess is relative to the large hex valve keeper that you use the seldom-used big wrench (of the set of three) to keep from spinning. Perhaps you need to deliberately reposition the keeper using the big wrench to get another 'bite' on the adjuster and its lock nut? When I built my bent wrenches, they are not identical. The two wrenches were bent in opposite directions so that one or the other would always be in a position to get a bite on the flats. -- Jim

Danke, Herr Frederick I was guessing it would be a long job because when i was working on the Tandem PS pump i didn't see a way to get the bracket off without first taking the pump out first. Just taking out the tandem pump I thought was a bear. (compared to OM 621/616 engines) That is the type of BTDT info I was looking for! I have started the disassembly. Okay, Levi, you have your opinion, but here's mine. Subarus are UULLLY. 300SD are the most beautiful car EVER made by anyone. I just feel all luxurious and ensconced in the Beauty Car whenever I drive it. I love to float down the freeway and drive 300 miles then hop out of the car all fresh like a flower. Of course, it has had the maintenance it deserves, like new suspension and everything but the steering box, and I'm getting a new one for my birthday this summer. (Yay!) The other box is the control unit. Dont ask me the specifics, but you have to unplug one of the round plugs on top and plug that wire into the interface box you get at the dealer, then plug that box back into the port you removed the other wire. Then you have to unplug the power wire and plug that somehow into the interface box. Then plug the cd changer into the interface box. Re: [MBZ] Question on changing glow plugs in a 87 190D 2.5 Turbo
If you are going to remove the intake manifold, i'd for sure replace the plastic clips that keep the injection lines from vibrating and cracking. I couldn't get to all of mine to properly replace them with the manifold in place (603 engine), but it was easy with it off. Adjusting the ALDA, or adding shims, if it's needed is also much easier with the manifold off - the first time, as it was VERY tight. Re: [MBZ] Question on changing glow plugs in a 87 190D 2.5 Turbo
I did this on two of my 603s with the manifold off. On the third, I could not get the manifold bolts loose, so I left it in place. Do keep the clips on the injection lines in place. The price of not keeping the clips in place is broken fuel lines, and that is nearly a dead on roadside problem. You will at least leak a substantial amount of fuel until you do stop. Re: [MBZ] Benifit of drivinng a diesel
I think we just had this discussion last week. VO is about 12 TIMES as viscous as D2 - in a 50% mixture it would be about 6 times as viscousdo you think your IP was designed for that? I don't. Yes, it will work for a while - how long, I don't know. As for used oils, if filtered with a filter bag to 5 microns, I would say it's no different than VO, except MB has officially nixed ATF and motor oil has a high ash content. I ran a 240D on a mix of everything flammable AND bacon grease, mineral spirits, gasoline, citronella oil and alot of other stuff. The car still runs. Would I add the stuff you mention to the tanks of either of my cars? No way. Marshall uses an occasional QUART of new motor oil as a tonic. I don;t drink tonics, so I have no idea when I or my engine needs a tonic. '92 300D. I wouldn't...without heating clean/filtered VO to a temp that brings it's viscostiy to something approaching D2 (about 3 centistokes, IIRC). Chris Sunil Hari [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: OK, I have a newbie question about alternative fuels. I have a 1992 300D. Can I just dump oil (used, new, motor, vegetable) into my fuel tank and expect it to work? Keep in mind that I have a minimum of 5 gallons of #2 diesel in there at all times, usually more, as a dilution medium. Is there benefit/harm in putting in a quart or 4 of used ATF? I have no desire to run a proper WVO setup, but if I can use my used oils in my fuel tank, I see no reason to go down to Advance Auto and recycle it. Reduce body roll is true but it seems like an understatement! I thought the change would be a subtle one, but it was immediately noticeable and a MAJOR improvement. Ride quality doesn't seem to be affected at all, but the car is absolutely flat now through most average-speed turns and only leans a little through high-speed turns. Stability in highway lane changes and similar maneuvers is much better. Despite Dave's frequent recommendations for the 500E bar in the rear and the 124 LWB limo bar (slightly fatter than the 500E bar) in the front, I went with a matched set of 500E bars, and am glad I did. In fact, if I get the hankering to tinker I might go to a smaller-diameter bar in the front, like the 400E or Sportline bars which are in-between the 500E and stock 300E/D in size. The fat bar in the front seems to increase understeer quite a bit, and I like the handling to be more neutral. I suspect that additional suspension tweaks, or the ability to steer the car with the throttle that 300-some HP gives you (or both), canceled this effect out in the 500E. Regardless, it's a huge improvement and I am thoroughly spoiled now---I'll have to make this mod to any future 124s I buy as well. $2500 sounds like a good deal if it's very nice! I sold my '78 for $2700, and it had a very nice body and a fair interior (major dash and rear seatback cracking due to the california sun). This '81 CD that I have does have a much better interior with minor splitting along the seams on the top of the seatback, but it looks like it can be stitched up easily by an upholsteror! Re: [MBZ] W124 Sportline swaybars for sale
Chuck, There are different Sportline sway bars for the W201 chassis, including a sort of stage 2 setup from the factory Evo II model (201.036). However, I recall someone saying that the 124 front bar can be made to fit a 201 if you cut an inch off each end, *and* flip the mounting brackets on the frame around. I've never done this myself though. Glad you like the sway bars, Alex! I'm planning on upgrading to a 20mm rear bar next, and leaving the limo front bar. That should help make my car a tad more neutral (not that I have any complaints as-is, though.) :) -dm -- Date: Thu, 27 Apr 2006 21:49:07 -0700 From: Chuck Landenberger [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] W124 Sportline swaybars for sale Alex Dave... It's somewhat easier to do the job with the fuel lines out. It's even easier to do the job (a breeze) with the intake manifold off. That requires maybe 1/2 hours work and you can replace the manifold gasket (that is probably seeping some oil near the #2 cylinder). Be sure you get the correct 27 mm Beru plug (0100221138 or 0100221153) and not the shorter 23 mm plug used by later ('90s) engines. Re: [MBZ] Brake issues on a 3/4 ton Suburban
My sense is that the brakes on the Subs are not quite up to their task, so they are loaded pretty heavily, which stresses both rotors (heat warps them) and pads. First thing to check would be to make sure your wheels are on tight! For bearings -- grab the tire (jacked off ground) and giving it a shake to see if it wobbles much (a slight some is OK). Then rotors-- take off tires, turn the rotors and look for any wobble against the brake pads or just check with a gauge, or take them off, get them turned, or just replace them (they are fairly cheap), They don't owe you much after 7 years 155k.. Pads would not cause oscillation -- that is a rotor problem primarily. Another thing to check is all the suspension and steering components. Does your truck have the steering damper? Are the stabilizer links OK? I had a jeep with a broken front stabilizer attachment bolt, that thing would jump all over the place. --R kayoooh @ gmail wrote: Hello List, This question is directed in particular to those who drive Suburbans, although I have experienced the problem with other 4x4 as well!! Spoken like somebody who's never had to actually DO it. At -20F there ain't no 240D NOWHERE gonna startup without help. It isn't going to happen. 3 winters with mine proved it out. The best I ever did was around -10F and that was very iffy. If my car had sat all week with the cold and clock sapping the battery theres no way it'd have started. Theres a guy on the Yahoo diesel Mercedes list who is setting up his son with 2 big 6v batteries in the trunk with an inverter to power the blockheater while he's away at college. He's going to do what I never got around to and wire the heating batteries into the charging system so running the car will recharge them. Unfortunately considering the amount of short run driving I did while I was in college I think this will result in extra wear on the car just to charge those batteries but I guess it can't be helped. Of course I'm also of the mind that most college kids shouldn't have cars. When they're in college they should stay there all weekend, it builds character. -Curt quite a character, apparently from all those weekends spent in the dorm. Re: [MBZ] Fuel mileage computers for diesels!!
I am wondering if there is a portable or a semi portable mileage computer available out there for diesel cars and or trucks! In the Dodge diesel pickup the factory mileage computer is open-loop, in that it's not measuring fuel consumption at all. (This is difficult to do, especially with a fuel return line to measure also.) Instead it just measures the position of the fuel rack and consults its internal table of fuel delivery to _assume_ what is being consumed. Tolerably accurate, unless there is something wrong or modifications have been made. Certainly as accurate as, let us say, a temperature gauge that only has two positions! I have always assumed that this is because measuring true consumption is difficult, expensive, or involves relatively unreliable sensors, or some combination of the above. I also assume that they pretty much all do it this way, so it's not like the junkyards are filled with easily-salvageable fuel flow sensors. -- Jim

I had heard of chipping some of the newer diesel trucks to get almost 30MPG but after you spend $40K for the truck and $5K-7$ for chipping it is simply not worth it. I have only heard of 'chipping' in conjunction with getting more power, never for better economy. Seems to me that if it were that easy to get better mileage the maker would have already done it. Dave (and the others that responded), Typical Mercedes thing. Take the fan off the clutch and it's possible, though hard to remove. Separated, it's impossible to replace without removing the radiator. Put it back on the clutch and it's possible to replace; and I didn't even buy the custom tools. Thanks for the help Dave. ...Kevin Dave M. said: Kevin, It sounds like you are trying to mount the clutch to the water pump, then attach the fan blade separately? That would be awfully hard, if not impossible. The blade and clutch should stay attached. You install the water pump by itself, then drop the clutch+fan down the front and bolt it on with the single 8mm Allen-head bolt. This is very, very hard to do with the radiator in place if you don't have the bolt spinner tool, and the stubby socket. You've got two options: 1) Pull the radiator. It will be easier in the long run, and gives you an excuse to blow the radiator condenser fins out with compressed air. 2) Buy the stubby socket and fabricate the spinner tool. I've done that job a couple times with a heavy wire to lock the hub (goes between the two raised ridges and into a hole in the hub), an 8mm allen wrench, and a bit of pipe for a handle. Works perfectly. There is NOT much room up there, you have to unscrew the bolt with a both hands (one index finger on each side), but it works. I found it much faster to remove the fan clutch than to wrestle the belt on with the fan in place. Peter

I don't know how it would work but I guess that it could change fuel delivery and timing and reduce horsepower by a considerable margin to deliver better efficiency. Sunil, The front bar is pretty easy... about an hour if you are mechanically inclined. The rear bar is much more work, took me about 4 hours the first time I did it, but with practice I can now do it in less than 1 hour. The procedure for the rear bar is on my website. [MBZ] Coolant Question
Ok, so remind me, why do I want to pay through the nose for MB coolant or look around until I find someone who has Zerex G-05? My car is a 1976 115 300D. It is 30 years old and I have had it for almost a year. It has green coolant in it now. It may have had green coolant for the past 25 years. I will never know. The rad looks a bit crusty inside. Notwithstanding that, it seemed fine last summer. It climbed to temperature and sat there evenly. I did not have the AC working so maybe I was not putting real stress on the cooling system. I hope to get the AC working so I may need to be concerned about that. At any rate, my understanding is that the good stuff has some better qualities in regard to anti-corrosion. Am I worried about the engine internals or jsut things like the radiator if I continue using the easily obtainable and reasonably inexpensive anti-freeze mixed with water at around a 50/50 mix? Am I going to improve something if I do switch to the approved stuff? Am I going to regret it if I don't switch? Bear in mind that I like this car and it seems to be in remarkable condition for its age. It do not want to harm it but I have to wonder if it is a bit anal to spend an arm and a leg on anti-freeze. I am still running Shell Rotella oil. I have not switched to synthetic, although I may at some point. I changed oil when I got it and again before I put it away for the winter. I have yet to adjust valves or check compression etc so I don't know the exact status of the engine at this time. I drove it a couple of thousand miles last summer between July when I acquired it and November 1 when I put it away for the winter. Some short trips around town and a 3 o4r 4 trips in excess of 200 miles each. It ran fine. Shifts hard when cold but otherwise didn't do anything that caused me any alarm. Re: [MBZ] Coolant Question
the coolant story is a bit of a mystery. nearly all MBs run the green stuff. nearly all of them with plastic neck radiators eventually break the neck off. when the neck breaks, people scream it was the green stuff. as there are virtually none out there that have lived their whole lives on the benz stuff, we don't know whether they break their necks or not. so the answer is that no one knows. my though is to use what you want but change it often. if you change it annually, i don't think it will matter a hill of beans on a 76 300D. I think brakes are considered a weak point on these trucks. The original stuff didn't last long. I would guess that rotors need to be looked at and new pads installed. Ok, so remind me, why do I want to pay through the nose for MB coolant or look around until I find someone who has Zerex G-05? Because the car will last longer with less effort that way? The green stuff is probably OK, just like DOT 3 brake fluid is OK, so long as you change it often enough. G05 is easy enough to come by (as in I can still find it in town, the last time I bought some) that I just use it. The rad looks a bit crusty inside. It will need an acid flush sooner or later. It's surprising how fast the system goes from 'just fine' to 'overheats terribly' once it goes over the edge. At any rate, my understanding is that the good stuff has some better qualities in regard to anti-corrosion. Am I worried about the engine internals or jsut things like the radiator The radiator is the most fragile bit of aluminum in the system, but it all gets attacked.
