Poulsbo. Lots of square heads up there. Heck, anywhere on the upper

A 1990 IDI could get that much?
Of course, the rectangular ambulance body makes it practically
a box truck as far as aerodynamics goes, that can't help.
I know a 3sp C6 dually pickup with the 6.9IDI will not
get 10mpg at anything over 55mph, but I assume this 1990 might
have an overdrive.

As for the 4.10, five years ago it was the tallest ratio that was
made for the axle used in the dually. Not sure about 1990, but I
doubt you could get 3.73 in a dually back then. The early Dodge
diesel with the 3sp 727 tranny could be had with a 3.08, at least
in SRW form. I'd like to put a 5sp in one of those and see if 28mpg
is possible.

[MBZ] U-Pull finds

2006-07-14 Thread Jim Cathey

Silly me, forgot to change the subject. Sorry.

-- Jim

At the U-Pull today there is a 190E, and a 76 300D. Unusual
in the 115 is that the dashboard is nearly uncracked, there's
only one starting at the speaker hole. The speaker grille is
not nearly as ratty as most I've seen. The dash is wood-paneled,
but most of that is not looking so hot.

Was back at PnP today trying to fetch the puegot IP, walked past a 300D.

This is a euro model 300D. Engine looks REALLY good. Still complete
enough. I was not able to attack it too much since I did not have the
tool I wanted to liberate the IP and injectors.

Reason for it being in the yard -- sideswipe passenger side (doors)
and rust through in the floor panels. 206k miles on the clock,
interior is ok, paint on not crunch side old, but no rust. Auto trans,
retrofit AC, good radiator and oil cooler, no turbo.

I am not going to try to transplant that 617 into Gump, so you who need
it, should come and get it. PnP is in Lynnwood, WA

False alarm, the TransVan is gone. They do have a pre-powerstroke
F350 (pickup chassis) ambulance, complete, not stripped, for $1950.
This one has the old 7.3 International IDI engine. For $2k that could
hold a lot of seats (or a gurney/bed) and tow a car trailer, but I doubt
it will get the MPG of newer trucks.

[MBZ] OT: Ford Ambulance F/S

2006-07-14 Thread Mitch Haley
Kleb and others:
Does anybody want an E450 ambulance?

I saw one about 7 miles from my house (mid-michigan) this AM,
green on white (usually they are red on white)
price on the windshield was 2xxx. Most of them come
with 7.3L powerstroke diesel (non-intercooled in vans,
no rrom for an I/C in the nose).
They cut a van off behind the driver's seat and join the
ambulance body up to it, so now the thing has no back wall
on the cab. I think it's feasible to put rails on it and
carry a car as long as an SDL, but if you extended the cab
for back seats or sleeper you probably couldn't get the CG
of the car in front of the back axle. I don't know what it
would cost to extend the chassis and put a used rollback bed
on it, but the total would probably be cheaper than a good
used diesel rollback. I don't need any more projects, or I'd
buy it and keep my eyes open for an old TransVan motorhome body.
(in fact, I think I know where there might be an $800 TransVan
right now, about 100 miles north of me)

You can. Leatherique will do it. It's probably not a real
good idea, as the original color would start to show through

Bamboo, and I used Leatherique dye then. So far, so good,

As asides... w126 seats into w116s used to be a pretty common switch, to

Brian- I'll try that. So, if it were working properly would I have
to pull up on the shifter to get into reverse?

Yeah, unless the mechanism is worn (as you suspect). Or is it push
down? I think the 4-sp and 5-sp trannies differ in this area. Once
I'd gone through the Frankenheap's shifter everything started working
a lot better. With the slop in the bushing repaired the necessary
actions got a lot crisper. (Heap had a nasty twist in the knob because
one side of the shaft was unpinned in the plastic bushing. Really
unpleasant to use.)

Where is the "worn plastic bushing" and how do I get at it and fix it?

It's socketed in the top of the shifter mechanism, where the shaft
holding the knob goes in. I believe there is a collar that unscrews
from the top that releases the shaft/pin/bushing assembly. Looks
like a 50-cent part that's meant to be replaced from time to time,
but isn't necessarily easy to come by!

My notes, such as they are, are in

Re: [MBZ] OT: hitches

2006-07-14 Thread Jim Cathey

I stopped at a tractor dealer a yesterday. While the small
Minneapolis-Moline caught my eye, right next to it was a 6 cyl Farmall
-

with a 2-point hitch.

My grandfather bought two tractors: A MM U and the Farmall 200.
They're both still in use, but not the MM so much. Nice heavy
tractor, will out-pull anything else the family's ever owned.
Magnificent beast, really. But the Farmall gets much more use
because it's much more versatile. The MM is thirsty, and primitive.
(No hydraulics, etc.) The new Deere 5-cylinder turbodiesel, replacing
the old Oliver diesel, is getting the bulk of the heavy work now.
Last use of the MM was to pull the Deere+plow combo out of the mud.
The MM and grandpa's Cat were tied off to each other and used to yard
trees out of the woods, and to straighten up the barn when it
got leaned over in a bad storm.

  * It looks like the arragement of links could allow for the
hydraulics to
press down. That is, transfer some of the tractor weight to the
implement.
Can it do that? That was one of my biggest frustrations with the
3-point

blade while doing road work.

Absolutely. There's a pin you can pull on the lifting cylinder
if you want a floating implement that can be only lifted. (The
Farmall's blade, incidentally, is either front- or belly-mount
and pushes down, since it's on the forward hydraulics which don't
have a float feature.)

  * It also looks like the hitch pivoted at a point just forward of
the axle.

If I didn't miss something (it was getting dark...), that means the
implement tail would lift much more that the front. A 3-point is
usually

a parallelogram so the lift would be closer to level.

It does tilt. Unless you unpin the front link of the hitch mechanism
from the frame and attach it to one of the front hydraulic arms. Then
you've got pitch control of the hitch at your fingertips too. (Does
require manipulating two levers to keep a constant pitch as you change
height, but I don't see that as much of a problem.) Not to mention that
moves the pivot point a foot or two forwards, so the tilt effect is
automatically diminished thereby.

Based on MY calculations, the KLIMA relay is the problem less than 10%
of the time - but it's easy to replace!! There are about 11 other
potential causes.

Re: [MBZ] Test and possible move to WA

2006-07-14 Thread Zoltan Finks

Well, the job would be in Bainbridge Island, so that's why we are looking
there. But we have found home prices there quite high.

So to live on the mainland would require ferrying over to get to work.

What towns are you advocating? Do tell.

What is wrong with living closer to the mainland? There are just as

For
the laughs and the learning.

That is, in fact, what I've heard from my wife's friends who grew up
there -
that it just sort of spits a lot.

And yes, it is pretty much nasty here (MN) 10 mo. of the year as one
of you
said. We are getting into potentially the hottest summer on record. I'd
rather have my 112 and dry that I grew up with.

As for the job in WA, it could have us looking at Bainbridge Island or
Silverdale. Bremmerton is a less nice area, no?

How inconvenient/expensive is it to catch the ferry across to Seattle
for a
night out, or a trip to Trader Joe's, etc.? I would probably ride my
bicycle
to catch the ferry and tool around the city.

Klima, N6, or AC relay from the wiring diagram , are all one and the
same.

Is the Klima relay the same as the AC relay (Rusty's site) or AC
Compressor Control Unit ( N6) in the FSM?

I think so. It's the thing that gets the signal from the
compressor's RPM sensor. It's worth at least cleaning the
contacts on the one you do have. You could consider a
resolder job on its guts too.
