Either he has the wrong pics with the auction (would not be the first time),
or it's a simple typo on the title and he knows zip about Mercedes. These
are the two 'innocent' explanations.

Or, on the dark side:
- it's a sham auction anyway, to boost his car sales feeback (like the
notorious Baltimore Russians), or
- he did it that way deliberately so he could cancel the NO RESERVE auction
early due to an error in the description.

Re: [MBZ] Mixture Control

2006-10-05 Thread Frederick W Moir

Hi, LarryT et al.
If I'm reading what is written correctly, you want to measure the
mixture of one particular cylinder? If so, the only ways that come to
mind are:- 1. drill exhaust manifold close to the head and insert a
probe. (this may not be too accurate as the exhaust cycle scavenges
gas from all cyls in turn). Or 2. use an antique system called
"Colortune" . It is essentially a spark plug with a window and you
adjust the mixture to get the correct color. i.e. mixture. Yes, you
may borrow mine. I have not used it in 20 years but it is still extant.

If you want to do this on a diesel. amfyoyo!

Howdy -
I'm trying to find a way to measure the rich/lean mixture of a cylinder - I
suspect there's a type of probe that measures the ratio of fuel to air in a
given space but I need the proper name to find it. Any ideas?

Re: [MBZ] Mixture Control

2006-10-05 Thread Trampas
One method used in small aircraft is by measuring exhaust gas temperature.
The Oxygen sensor is used to sense the amount of oxygen in exhaust stream
which can be useful. There is also a wide band oxygen sensor which has a
large dynamic range. However the best results is to use a 4-gas emission's
analyzer which most shops have. These machines measure 02 C02 C0 and HC from
which you get all the information you need.

The common oxygen (aka lambda) sensor? Measures the burned result,

I was on a road north of Columbus, OH, and there were warning lights
about 1/8 mile from the intersections. If the lights are flashing, the
traffic light is going to be red or yellow when you get there, so you
may as well lift throttle now and coast to the intersection. I imagine
it not only increases safety but saves fuel too.

Don, the correct oil for your 240D is castor oil Put in 6.5 qts, then
drink the last 0.5 qt. List tradition!

BTW, did you go see the Blimp?

Can't remember when I last saw one of the old oil cans
that went "boink" when you pressed on the bottom..

That's what I keep my M1 5W20 in! (Found it in the garage of
the house after I bought it.)

Re: [MBZ] Vacuum pump

2006-10-05 Thread Jim Cathey
How do I know if the vacuum pump on my '85 190D is going out? Its slow
to develop vacuum at low speed, when I back out of my driveway in the
morning I've got no power brakes. By the end of my street like 50
yards away everything is fine.

There is a procedure in the manual for testing it, involving emptying
the brake booster and monitoring how long it takes (at idle) to pump
back to X Bar. This assumes no leaks.

The vacuum pump is not all that hard to replace on these things,
usually.

I wanted them twelve months ago, Walt, but the cost of shipping is a

[MBZ] Power steering pump madness

2006-10-05 Thread Curt Raymond
I got a replacement power steering pump from Silver Star, thinking it
impossible they'd sent me another wrong pump it just sat in the garage until
tonight when I figured I'd clean it prior to install.
The car is an '85 190D 2.2l
The old pump is part number 201 460 1180, it has a black tag that includes TYP
64 and 65BAR.
The new pumps are part number 201 460 1780, the tags are green and include TYP
72 and 85BAR.

Is the old pump wrong or am I going to damage the steering box on my car with
the new pump? I had so wanted to get this delt with...

Either pump will work, it doesnt matter which one you use. They are
both correct for that car/engine

Car & Driver's columnists, while entertaining, are not exactly
unbiased. For what it's worth, this is what it says on the Auburn city
website about their system:

"Our program requires police to check and authorize every ticket before
it is issued to confirm a genuine violation has occurred."

It may be different in other jurisdictions.

They also note that you have the option to go to court and sign an
affidavit stating you weren't driving the vehicle at the time, and that
you have the same right to challenge the ticket as you would any other
traffic fine:

My guess is they bring in the camera video that shows the car entering
the intersection after the light turned red. It seems like that'd be
awfully hard evidence to argue against.
