Re: [MBZ] Brake booster woes

I presume theres a grommet too or is it included?
I imagine its a tight fit on the line.

I guess it's normally part of the hose, because there's no way
to stretch it far enough to go either of the fittings. (So it's
put on first.)

I, however, often replace missing such grommets with ones I pull out
of used oil filters. Spray off the oil, slit 'em open, and wrap it
around the line. Turn it so the slit is not in the open on the metal
clamp that holds it. Works well. This, of course, is only suitable
when the line is not significantly damaged due to the missing grommet.

2006-10-27 Thread M.Afzaal.Khan

Hi
the 103 engine fitted to the 300SE does have a known weak spot in the
right rear of the engine where the oil and water channels are adjacent to
each other. corrosion, age related fatigue on the gasket causes this oil
and water mix.

Early telltale signs are oily residue in the water header tank .
It will be most effective to thoroughly flush the system a couple of
times to remove all the residues which can cause the hoses to soften or
if the hoses are old to replace al at this point.

Dear Mz Friends,
I have an offer to replace a head gasket on my 1990 300SE at $1,000. How
does that sound?
What's the probability of the head being warped? The car overheated but
never pegged the temp guage. I have oil mixed in the anti-freeze but not
the other way around.
If the head is warped - what additional costs can I expect (i.e. to have
the same shop do it when it is down with the head gasket replacement?

Thanks very much,

the 94 was a john browning design and would be the lever action we
would generally have the greatest familiarity with. it's a sweet gun,
but you find most of them in 30-30, which is just not that interesting
a cartridge for me.

I have one in .44 mag. I like .44 mag, don't ask me why. I prefer
the medium loads, not the hot stuff. If I was after deer, the 30-30
would be a better choice (in 94's) I'm sure. I don't have one of
those, but I do have a pot-gun in 45-70/.22 that's probably good
for taking rabbit-chasing deer. Get the rabbit for lunch, and
the deer for dinner! (I don't hunt, however. Only old Mercedes.)

useful today as they day they were first produced. i mean, is there
really a better pistol than the 1911?

Sure. Depends on your purpose, of course. For swimming armed in
salt water it's hard to beat a Glock, for example. For pure esthetics,
though, the 1911 is pretty sweet. Your best bet is to own one of
everything!

the 300Se /103 engine seems to be sluggish from idle to about 2200RPM,
then the acceleration is quite brisk.

the engine has freshly replaced electric consumables including the
throttle plate potentiometer, fuel pump and filter.

I have slightly leaned out then richened the mixture but still, around 2200
RMP is the point when the engine becomes brisk and eager to pull to the
limit. Is it a erratic EHA unit ?

Iron equals wear on steel or cast iron parts, but if it is indeed 20%
less than the last oil change, you may be correct.

You may also be seeing less wear, too. It's not carbon being released
so much a "hard sludge" being dissolved, though.

Check the timing chain, they dont' last all that long in an M103
(single row chain!), and your symptoms sound a great deal like late
valve timing -- the power is still there, but it doesn't show up until
high rpm.

Re: [MBZ] sluggish running 300Se.

2006-10-27 Thread Hendrik Riessen
That's what I used to believe until I heard from quite a few sources that
the 103 is way better on timing chains because the camshaft does not
'vibrate' as much as the 102 camshaft. Of course I have no definitive proof
of this (as in factory technical literature), so I am not going to dig my
heels in on this.
Suffice to say MB dropped the ball on this design both in early 102 and 103
motors. I am not sure about the 103 motor but the 102 went to double row
towards the end of it's production run. I also fail to understand why it
took MB so long to finally upgrade the timing chain, how much money where
they saving by putting in a single row (this applies to other motors as
well)? Of course these chains never failed while the car was under warranty,
much to the owners delight.

They are not misadjusted, they are opening and closing late in relation
to crank/piston position and ignition timing. This interferes with air
flow quite a bit at low charge density/low velocity. The effect is
much less as the charge density goes up and the velocity in the intake
runners increases.

The M103 chain is a weak sister -- they only last 100,000 miles under
the best conditions (synthetic oil) and will wear sooner if you use
dino oil.

It is exactly the same chain as the M102 and is pulling four more
valves...

The econometer would be in the red with the engine off. Also the odometer
numbers don't line up too well...hmmmnh.

But worst of all it is just about out of fuel.
I suppose it could be a dodgy gauge or sender, don't think it is a fuse
cause other things run off the same fuse.
However if the current owner has driven around without fixing the oil gauge

I've got a '91 300CE 24-Valve as a daily driver. Be prepared for some
expensive parts due to the smaller number of cars produced. When I bought
it a couple of years ago it needed an electrical module (don't remember
the exact name). A new one was over $1,500, found a used one for $300. I
replaced the fuel distributor recently, Rusty has new ones for $1,600 but
he found me a rebuilt one for $600 with core exchange. It needs a valve
job and Jarek, Michael Hall's dad who works on it for me, quoted around
$2,000 for the job. You have to use at least mid-grade gasoline and it
runs better on premium.
Positive points are it runs like a bat our of h***, with quick
acceleration, takes corners like it is on rails and gets around 22 mpg.
And as you say, it looks snazzy. Mine is black with grey interior and 16
inch wheels from a CLK.

[MBZ] Partly OT - cold air into exhaust

2006-10-27 Thread Zoltan Finks

Question is: Can having a break in your exhause pipe about 2/3 of the way to
the tailpipe (in other words, about under the rear seat, and just before the
muffler) cause enough cold air (remember we have sub-zeros coming) to harm
(as in "burn") the vavles? This is what I was warned about years ago when
running open headers occasionally came into the picture.

This is partly OT becase I'm not talking about my Mercedes, I'm talking
about a gasser four-cylinder (whose make shall remain unnamed in the
interest of quelling any protest).

Probably, the cat converter would protect things?

I doubt it, just makes you rev a little more off the line to store
enough energy to launch the car with the lighter flywheel. If it's
off balance, it will get worse when you rev higher. If it's not off
balance, I'd check out a lot of other things before worrying about
the flywheel. Have you done a power balance test? If all cylinders
aren't firing evenly, it will cause vibration that gets less noticeable
at higher revs.

Brian,

I had heard that warning too, and think it mostly affects zoomy headers, the
ones that go up. cold air falls and would not naturally flow up a hot
header from below.

The tortuous flow path involved would preclude any large shot of cold air
from reaching the valves. I would worry more about the potential death threat
of carbon monoxide exiting that hole and entering the cabin.

I don't think it's cold air, but rather oxygen, that burns exhaust valves.
Open headers won't do it, but open ports with no header/manifold will.
Like Alan said, carbon monoxide under the car isn't good, keep the fan

Re: [MBZ] 124 front speakers

2006-10-27 Thread Alex Chamberlain

Glad it worked for you, Loren. If you are bothering to replace the
speakers I imagine you're also putting in a new head unit---and in
that case I would strongly recommend also bypassing the center console
fader switch. You don't need to run new wire to the speakers to
accomplish this, as is usually claimed. If you cut the wire bundle
that comes into the fader from the head unit at the switch, pull the
bundle back into the head unit opening, and remove all the tape and
shrink-tube holding it together, you'll see the four pairs of front
and rear speaker wires (and a lot of extra spaghetti used to create
common grounds for the fader switch, which can be cut and discarded en
masse). I used an AA battery to make sure I got the polarity right
and then spliced the speakers into the harness at the head unit
connector. Using the head unit's fader instead of the outboard one
makes for a BIG improvement in sound---you won't get the full benefit
of newer, higher-output speakers otherwise.

JB Weld doesn't take high temperatures very well. If it's on a straight
section of pipe, I'd make a "tin can patch" with a piece of sheet metal,
two clamps, and some muffler cement. Those hold up pretty well.

Re: [MBZ] Partly OT - cold air into exhaust

2006-10-27 Thread Zoltan Finks

Ah. I'm intrigued by this muffler cement. This type of patch wouldn't
work here though, as the break is right where the pipe joins the body
of the muffler (if I recall correctly). So I suppose technically I
need a new muffler.

It's a muffler that's mounted with its length running "side-to-side",
and the pipe entering right into the middle of its cylindrical body.
So not a very common muffler I think.

Since it's looking like we may have to sell the car for parts, I'm
just going to use it this winter and then seek to part with it. The
car runs great - good engine and tranny and nice interior! But there
are annoying things like this that need fixing, and I'm sure nobody
would give me more than a few hundred for the car.

Also: I thought I read recently on a JB Weld package that it
withstands a pretty impressive temperature. I did a thusfar successful
repair right up by the manifold, but I also hung it with a
tightly-wound clothes hanger to take the pressure off the joint.

It's a gray stuff that looks and feels a lot like mortar. It's crumbly,
so it doesn't hold up when used alone, but it does a good job when put
between pipes or between a pipe and a patch.

Oh, yeah, those are tough. Nothing I've tried has worked for long in
that location, but I suppose you have nothing to lose by trying JB
Weld. Mufflers always seem to rust out and fail at the weld lines,
don't they?

Here in Houston there is this tradition of "art cars" started some years
ago by some hippie artist types, through something called "The Orange

of these things around, I see some of them driving sometimes, others are
just brought out for the annual parade. There was a 300D parked at a
school nearby, a coupla years ago, that had been "arted" up with little
mirror tiles and various other items stuck to it. Aside from the
sacrilege of doing this to an old Benz, it actually did not look half
bad in an artsy sort of way, as it was somewhat restrained but still
unique. I have not seen it around for awhile, not sure where it went.
Might have been a school project or belonged to some teacher or something.

One of the local highschool autobody training shops did something similar with
a Ford Contour or Mercury Mistique -
or maybe one of each - can't recall. Both cars must have been damaged from
behind as they cut them off and welded
them back together in the middle. Being front drive vehicles, you could get in
and drive off in either direction
depending on which door you used. Don't know what happens if 2 drivers try at
once. It was showing up at car shows
around here a few years back. Don't know if it was street legal - probably not.

I always heard that running open headers could cause the exhaust valve
stems to warp as the cool air entered as it pleased, while the other
end was in the still hot head. I never saw it happen

Question is: Can having a break in your exhause pipe about 2/3 of the way to

(as in "burn") the vavles? This is what I was warned about years ago when
running open headers occasionally came into the picture.

Reminds _me_ of a mid-80s Car & Driver project, back when that
magazine was a lot more interesting---they put a second engine behind
the seats of a Honda CRX driving the back wheels through a second
transaxle (linked to the same shifter). IIRC, the install was pretty
tidy---the rear engine was hidden under a cover, a custom gauge panel
in the center console kept track of its vital signs, and the ignition
switch was wired with a relay and timer to start the engines
sequentially when turned (so as not to strain the single battery and
integrated electrical system, I suppose). Sounds like an April Fool's
joke, but apparently the thing ran and drove just fine, though without
much room for cargo!

Re: [MBZ] Partly OT - cold air into exhaust

2006-10-27 Thread Peter Frederick
You run into trouble if there are large leaks in the exhaust very close
to the valves, not from air getting in but from excessive heat from
lack of back pressure --remember, the valve train is designed to have
the pressure from forcing the exhaust out the pipes, and if you don't
have pipes you have to change the valve timing to prevent live flame
from surrounding the exhaust valves under heavy load. This burns them,
not air entering the pipes.

Can do goofy things to performance, too, from screwed up airflow, but
not that far back.

I thought the drivetrains were somewhat independent, so you could run
one in neutral with the engine off, but I could be wrong on that point.
Honda gave them a couple of brand new auto tranny Accords from a
train wreck to serve as engine/suspension donors. I think the CRX then
had two 2.2L engines and four wheel drive. Handily outran a CRX Si, but
used a lot more fuel.

I remember the story about checking the oil at a gas station.
"What'r ya doin' back there?" "Checking the oil". The observer
didn't think that was funny, especially after he watched the
writer check the oil on the front engine. Then one engine
starts, followed by the sound of the other engine starting.

I must admit, it was more interesting than the C&D project 300TD.

Mitch.
