[MBZ] OT Shoe Goo?

2007-03-22 Thread Frederick Moir
Hi, All.
I need boot repair advice. I was wrestling the snowblower into the shed after
this last snowfall and managed to stab the toe of my rubber(?) boot with the
end of a small bolt, 1/4 dia. The bolt pulled out and the hole closed up, so I
only need to seal the top of the boot. Will the infamous Shoe Goo be the
best? Or are there other, better, solutions. Clumsy Clot wants to know.

[MBZ] OT Peaceful demonstrators

2007-03-22 Thread Redghost
Had an issue with the anti war folks. Wife was out of town yesterday
and left the e300d parked downtown. Not too close to the path of the
peaceful demonstrators. Seems one of them decided they did not like
german cars. No indication that the owner might support the war
effort, just wanted to vandalize the car. They only got the driver
window busted before a cop used his muddler on them.

Cops got hold of the wife and let her know, I get to figure out how to
get it out of impound and fit a new window before rain damages the
interior.

[MBZ] Harbor Freighter

2007-03-22 Thread Jim Cathey

Harbor Freight is having a sale. (I got a fuel-pressure test kit that
has Bosch CIS fittings in it. $70. The diesel compression tester is
again on sale at $17.) But what was particularly interesting was a 1#
box of Alumiweld (http://www.alumiweld.com) rods. These are some
kind of zinc alloy meant for brazing aluminum and pot metal. $12,
usually it's more like $20 there, or $30 elsewhere. The printed
instructions were fragmentary and the importance of a clean dedicated
stainless steel (no substitutions!) cleaning brush was not clear. I
think I may go back and get a brush, and maybe another 1# box of rods.
This is the stuff that would probably have been very good for fixing
that window regulator.

The roads are pretty much the same as they were in 1983 - I remember
cruising along at 80 MPH back then. But then I don't live in Atlanta, where
there are 2 speeds on the bypass, 100 MPH slow enough to walk beside a car
as its traveling down the highway..

With a stick, assuming it's at least as zippy as our

that seems to make it so nasty. That '79 was downright
unpleasant to get rolling, but fine at speed.

Cops got hold of the wife and let her know, I get to figure out how to
get it out of impound and fit a new window before rain damages the
interior.

I just love peaceful folks

My 78 240D w/AT and AC is ok except when starting from a stoplight. I
usually turn the AC off until I get rolling.

Fixing the bushing in the AT control rod transformed it - after ~30 years
all bushings and rubber parts should be looked at suspiciously.

If I lived where it's hilly I believe the 240D w/AT AC would be
undrivable. ~65 hp in a car weighing over 3000 #'s is just too much. Also,
~20% of HP or 12hp reduces power to 53hp! Snappy would not be an
appropriate description. ;-)

With a stick, assuming it's at least as zippy as our

Speaking of bumper stickers, my brother recently purchased a 1973
Cadillac Sedan DeVille. He found out it was first delivered in
October, 1972. He decided it would be fun and true to the era if he put
a Nixon Agnew bumper sticker on it. He found an original sticker on
ebay. He is NOT a republican - far from it. He just thought it would
make an interesting touch on a 73 Caddy which was probably driven by
someone who voted for Nixon (because just about everyone voted for Nixon
in '72). By the way, this is not a political discussion, we are talking
about bumper stickers (I wouldn't want Kaleb to send me to banned).

make an interesting touch on a 73 Caddy which was probably driven by

Had an issue with the anti war folks. Wife was out of town yesterday
and left the e300d parked downtown. Not too close to the path of the
peaceful demonstrators. Seems one of them decided they did not like
german cars. No indication that the owner might support the war
effort, just wanted to vandalize the car. They only got the driver
window busted before a cop used his muddler on them.

Cops got hold of the wife and let her know, I get to figure out how to
get it out of impound and fit a new window before rain damages the
interior.

I just love peaceful folks

Craig, I have worked an aeronautical (periscopic, bubble) sextant to .25
degree, but .004 is, indeed, a bit fine for B-52 celestial navigation.
Considering all the other variables and inherent errors involved (each one
with its correction applied), even .25 degree was a bit silly. Even
navigator judgment could be a significant part of a celestial fix
(position). B-52 navigators used to say, We measure it with calipers, mark
it with a grease pencil and chop it with an ax.

One flaw with his theory of navigation. When you have an inflight emergency
and have to quickly give your last known position prior to ditching, it is a
little late to take a sun shot with the sextant. Probability of detection
tables are depressing enough without having to radio in a position like
about two hours south of Key West.

Re: [MBZ] Harbor Freighter

2007-03-22 Thread Curt Raymond

Seems like each has its own little niche. Homier seems to have more small hand
tools. I got a bunch of multibit screwdrivers at one of their shows once, $0.19
apeiece.
Smelled like old tires, worked pretty good though.
Cummins is where I got my woodsplitters which have been awesome. My new cell
phone holder is decent too. Made a soup Sunday night in the dutch oven, it
tasted wierd, probably the waxy preservative they used although my wife thinks
it was from the olive oil I used to season it.
I'm still alive so its probably not poison... Used it to cook taco meat last
night which worked out fine.
Interestingly cooking taco meat seems to be the fastest way to season cast
iron. After dinner boiled some water in it and mopped it out with paper towels
and dammed if it hasn't improved 50%.

However I did go to a Cummins Tool show last Sunday.

Cummins, Harbor Freight, Homier. Quite similar, really.
HF seems to have more of the heavier stuff.

Don't let soap touch that thing and it will last you for years. I'm still
using a cast iron dutch oven that I bought in the late 70s or early 80s at a
garage sale. It is my favorite method of cooking almost anything I make.

My ground school instructor ferried B-17s during WWII, to South American
to Africa then to Europe. He would leave Florida, fly south, take a
left at land, and find the airfield. Then he would fly east, hit land,
take a nav shot then turn right or left to the airfield. He said he
always landed withing 15 minutes of the guys who spent their whole
flight obsessing about their navigation, and played cards, napped, and
had a good time while flying.

Re: [MBZ] 1982 240D - is it worth it?

2007-03-22 Thread Loren Faeth
One learns to be a better driver with less power. Even in soapbox derby,
they said the winning difference was being on the right line, and steering
steady. Wandering wastes time and fuel. Driving an underpowered cars teach
you about looking ahead, anticipating, planning moves, especially passing
carefully. With my 190Dc and 200D, I always had to drop back, look for a
chance to pass coming, and then build up speed so that when the hole came,
i had enough speed to pass and get back in the right lane.

The 240D is worth exactly what you are willing to pay for it. Its
driveability depends on what is driveable to you. There are a fair number
of 240Ds still out and about.

I once bought a cheap piece of cast iron, couldn't season it enough
to make it stop sticking. Showed it to my mother, who pointed out
that it was still rough as cast, not milled smooth like every piece
of iron in her collection. So, either I attack it with auto body
tools or I find a real pancake griddle (Wearever, Regal, etc) at
a garage sale for less than I paid for my unfinished POS griddle.
