Any thoughts regarding why that silly hex nut just spins and won't tighten?

And any thoughts on how in the meantime I can get the roof to seal up?

Is it simply cable tension that snugs the roof up in place and holds it there?

The plastic hex cap, often missing, locks the hex nut

as it hasn't gotten stiff. Once it binds, the plastic
cap breaks, falls into the trunk, and is discarded.

I think maybe my loosening of that clutch adjusting nut has removed
  tension on the cable?

Yes, you could try tightening it back a bit.

 ___

It is. It was top-rated at Consumers Reports when I bought it. There are
plenty of window units available locally at 10.xx EER and at cheap prices,
but I'd rather fix this one and rig it with a remote thermostat if it's
fixable. All the new ones use complex PC boards with handheld wireless
controllers. When I go in the shop and turn on the main power switches,
 the
new type Sharp A/C in the other side of the shop has to be turned on with
the remote and now it has to be turned on manually because the remote went
bad and Sharp wants $50! for a new one!

One thing I've been curious about is the kind of compressors these newer
A/Cs have. They are long, narrow compressors; much smaller than the old
type. I would guess they would be rotary screw compressors on the order
of the large ones in big commercial installations. The Sharp makes a very
steady tone comparable to the large commercial compressors steady
 roar.

Re: [MBZ] Quick Mercedes trivia questions

My 66 110 200D did not come with factory seat belts. They were
federally mandated in the USA in 1966. My 66 has dealer installed
german belts. My 62 110 did have mounting points for 3 point belts,
but came from the factory with a shoulder belt only. It was European
delivery, but there were no US specific Models until 1968. I am not
sure about models released before the 1959 debut of the 111, but all
111 and 110, 112 bodies have mounting points for 3 point belts. I
think the /8 cars had seat belts standard equipment. the /8 made its
USA debut in 1968, but I am not sure about the rest of the world.

My 65 110 190Dc had seat belts, but they were also dealer installed, German.

Alas, on the seatbelt as std. equipment, I think MB was late to the
dance, as all US cars had them factory installed in 65 or 66. To
their benefit, MB made seat belts available, at least as far back as
the 50s. The factory had options for lap belts, shoulder belts and
probably for 3 point belts it was up to the buyer, the dealer or the
country (importer) to specify what belt type, or no belt.. I am
pretty sure in the 300SL and SLR that seat belts were pretty much
standard, although the factory probably had some different options,
like maybe 4 point in the SLR

I believe pontons also had mounting points, but again they were not
standard equipment.

almost all other features of modern cars made its debut on Mercedes
Benz automobiles before other marques. the list is enormous. Almost
every safety feature was standard in MB years before becoming
available or standard from Detroit. If memory serves me, the 1914
Mercedes I saw in Vancouver, BC had an antitheft steering lock and
ignition switch. It also had an electric starter and may other
innovations not seen on US cars until years later. I was stunned
that it had a battery and electric starter in 1914. in 1914,
International Harvester was building trucks that still looked like a
high wheel wagon, not a truck as we know them.

That the fuse gets that hot indicates that you may have bad
contacts in the fuse box itself. Take a Dremel wire brush
to them. You may even need to get to the back side of it
and clean the screw terminals and ring lugs. That kind of
heat is itself sufficient to weaken a fuse and cause it to
eventually blow.

Also, were not some cars officially retrofitted to a larger
strap fuse for the ACC blower?

Duct tape? If you can't get the headliner panel out (roof is closed)

Is it simply cable tension that snugs the roof up in place and holds

Indirectly, operating on the linkage that is clearly exposed once

likely the fan capacitor went bad causing the fan motor to overheat.

I have used an redundant fridge compressor as a vacuum pump.

A ten year old 6000 btu Amana Quiet Cool window A/c in the shop quit

after I had smelled hot electronics for a short while. The circuit
 boards,
the fan motor, and the wiring don't look smoked; but the condenser is so
rusty I wonder if it might be the cause of the smell.
The circuit diagram is illegible from exposure to rain, etc. The fan
 motor
has three leads so I suspected it is a typical three speed motor setup
 and
it was confirmed on the label but the label gave no color codes for the
wires. The compressor also has three leads and a (common?) lead comes
 in
through a separate thermal switch .

The part I find confusing is a big capacitor which has three leads and a
rating of both 7.5 mfd and 35 mfd. From looking at the label on the
 blower
motor, it doesn't appear to be a capacitor start or capacitor run motor,
 so
I would guess that both the blower motor and the compressor use the
capacitor simply to give them a little more amperage when they start up
since they both start at once on some settings of the dial; but that's
 just
 a wild guess.

 Gerry,
I believe you will find that this is a RUN capacitor, dual rated with
 the
lower rating going to the condenser fan motor, and the higher for the
compressor. The cooling fan does not require a capacitor. Look
 carefully
 for
swelling, especially on the ends, and of course, leakage. A 10 year old
cap is your likely your culprit, with my guess being the condenser fan
 motor will not
run and is overheating, causing the smell. The condenser fan should
 spin
freely and being outdoors, can start to seize up over time. Oil might
 be
 all you need.
Both Johnstones and Graingers have good prices on these and will take
 cash
 sales from individuals.
I would not screw with the controls as there are a lot of safety devices
 and
interlocks. You don't want to set fire to your window, and all that is
 attached!

Thanks, Jim. After further disassembly and cleaning off some of the crud,
 I
found that the fan motor which runs both the evaporator and condenser fan
has a label on the motor showing that it does need a capacitor in it's
circuit. The motor turns freely but it smells so much like burnt wiring,
 I
doubt it will run very long if at all. Think I'll junk this A/C and get a
new one since the dual 7.5-35 mfd capacitors are scarce and pretty
 expensive
 on the internet.

Would like to use the compressor (with a 35 mfd cap?) as a vacuum pump if
it's still good. I would guess that the capacitor would be wired between
two of the three terminals on the compressor, or would I be wrong?

My 240D played that game too.
Take the sunroof headliner down, you might have to open it a bit more to do so
but thats okay.
Now run it as closed as it'll get, theres a bar across the sunroof that the
cable attaches to. Hold the sunroof button with one hand, grab the bar right at
the cable with the other and force it closed.
Moving the bar should force the rear of the sunroof up.

Yeah, I don't really have the service manual, so can't consult that.

As for just getting the thing closed for now:

I got in the trunk and attempted to turn the thing the owner's manual
describes as a hex shaped thing. So I put a socket on the hex nut and
turned. It got harder to turn as it went. I did see something inside
the motor turning though. The manual says clockwise closes the roof.

So just to try to see how things work, I turned counterclockwise, and
the nut began to unthread from its center shaft. Wonder if the factory
tool was made to turn this center shaft (which has a couple of flats
and the rest is round) instead of the nut? (factory tool is missing).

I turned the center shaft with some pliers and it rotated a bit, then
started to sort of strip out. When I let go of it, it rotates back
counterclockwise a bit.

I have physically pulled and pushed the sunroof shut, but it won't
raise up and seal up to the roof in the rear.

I thought the thing was designed so that it could be reliably opened
and closed manually from the trunk. Maybe that's just in the case of a
motor failure, not a binding-up situation?

2007-09-19 Thread Peter Frederick
Unclip the fan shroud, otherwise you may get the fan stuck in it, you have to
lift pretty high to get them in.

Right side is a pain, you must be underneath, and that is where all the oil
leaks run through, quite messy. Left side accesable from the top for the top
bolt.

Make sure you get the detent in the top of the mount engaged in the nub on the
engine carrier, and don't drop the lower bolt, it rolls down the frame member
and is a real pain to retrieve.

Re: [MBZ] Failed Emissions Inspection

2007-09-19 Thread Hendrik
There is no self diagnostic function on the catalytic converter, easy
thing is to plug your car into a computer and see what the go is.
You can spend 's on replacing stuff, only to find that a wire was
loose somewhere. The series 124's have quite a sophisticated self
diagnostic system and overall it is more cost effective to pay a
equipped Merc workshop to analyze your car, rather than spending money
on replacing serviceable parts.
Perhaps Rusty could let you know how much a cat for your car is.
Generally if everything else checks out fine, then the catalytic
converter is thought to be the trouble of high emissions.
I take it you are running the correct grade of fuel for your car?

It's possible that your AC clutch is in trouble. Sometimes a few windings

function. The blower motor will work fine until you put it on high where the
entire load on the fuse exceeds the fuse rating.

affluent DC suburb in VA, and has not been driven in the winter since
I got it. It has over 200k miles, but is in good running
order. Changing the trans fluid/filter did clear up the glitch in
the transmission from last year. I want to find a 92-93 TE to
replace it. It has the third seat. It is not a show car, but it is
very decent looking. It is missing the inner fender plastic liner,
and has the front of the rocker bent from the worthless new Jokohama tire.

the really good: New rear struts and steel hydraulic lines to the
struts, rebuilt tandem pump and lotsa fresh special fluid in the
suspension system. It has never leaked a drop since I put it back
together. Tires are good-very good. Has a good aftermarket alpine
cd player.

Interior is good, but not pristine. no holes or tears in the
interior. It matches the 87 300TD I am also going to sell later in
the fall. It has been fun to have a matching pair. We play fool the
neighbors. Buy a pair, have a ball!

I will be listing the car for sale in early Nov, after I have time
for cleanup/fixup, but if anyone wants it now, please email me
offlist. everything is there to make a car that will run another
100k to 200k miles even in the rustbelt with proper care and a little
TLC. Good for hauling newspapers, pets and other stuff. I can show
you the receipts for the new struts and lines from Rusty, along with
a few hundred dollars worth of other parts. When I got it I put in a
new coil and battery too. We drive it regularly on 500 mile trips.

I stopped by another hardware store yesterday (my fourth try!) and
bought
two tool brushes that look like they're about the right size. $7.60,
we'll see if it was wasted money. (Three stores had nothing at all,
the fourth had four plastic bins of them.) The new brushes are
1/4x3/16x3/4, they're only about 3/16 longer than the ones
they're replacing. I cut off the old brush tails and soldered the new
ones in their places. They're a tiny bit looser than the originals in
one direction, but they're the best I could do on short notice. They
should be more than good enough to prove whether the rest of the
generator works or not. I wrapped sandpaper around a paint can cap to
rub the new brushes against to get some curve to them to better match
the slip rings.

Moment of truth time! I put the repaired brush pack in, flashed the
field winding, and started it. Nothing. When I fed +12V into the field
I got about 20V out of the generator. I measured the DC field output
of the regulator under those conditions and got 28V or more. Is it
possible this generator needs higher than +12V field for operation?
If so, it's certainly not getting it on its own.

Disgusted, I did manage to turn the battery around. The positive
cable is definitely too short, but I managed to make it reach anyway.

My 66 110 200D did not come with factory seat belts. They were
federally mandated in the USA in 1966. My 66 has dealer installed
german belts. My 62 110 did have mounting points for 3 point belts,
but came from the factory with a shoulder belt only. It was European

sure about models released before the 1959 debut of the 111, but all
111 and 110, 112 bodies have mounting points for 3 point belts. I
think the /8 cars had seat belts standard equipment. the /8 made its
USA debut in 1968, but I am not sure about the rest of the world.

My 65 110 190Dc had seat belts, but they were also dealer installed,
 German.

Not sure about the front belts - but MB was early in putting shoulder
 belts
in the rear seat position. My 78 240D has them and some cars made in early
90s did not have them... My Mons 91 Olds did not for instance -

My 66 110 200D did not come with factory seat belts. They were
federally mandated in the USA in 1966. My 66 has dealer installed
german belts. My 62 110 did have mounting points for 3 point belts,

Re: [MBZ] OT: Confusing window A/C

Thanks, Mak. There are three unmarked terminals on the compressor. One is
undoubtedly common since it has the thermal protector in series with it. If
I touch
the other two terminals in order to find out which will run the compressor,
am I going to damage it if I touch the wrong one first? One shows 1.2 ohms
to the common lead and the other shows 2.1

I don't think I have room for two capacitors in the A/C since the dual cap
and the control pc boards take up most of the room in their compartment.

. Instead of a combined capacitor unit you certainly could have used
separate capacitors for the fan, 7.3uf and for compressor a 35uf .
 Most
likely the fan capacitor went bad causing the fan motor to overheat.

I have used an redundant fridge compressor as a vacuum pump.
as the compressor will not be under a starting load as a vacuum pump it
will run without a capacitor just on the 'Run' winding as mine does.

A ten year old 6000 btu Amana Quiet Cool window A/c in the shop quit
 running
after I had smelled hot electronics for a short while. The circuit
 boards,
the fan motor, and the wiring don't look smoked; but the condenser is
 so
rusty I wonder if it might be the cause of the smell.

The part I find confusing is a big capacitor which has three leads and
 a
rating of both 7.5 mfd and 35 mfd. From looking at the label on the
 blower
motor, it doesn't appear to be a capacitor start or capacitor run
 motor,
 so
I would guess that both the blower motor and the compressor use the
capacitor simply to give them a little more amperage when they start up
since they both start at once on some settings of the dial; but that's
 just
 a wild guess.

Did you check to see if the windings might be shorted to ground?

I've used open office for over a year now. It can do everything
 Micro$#!t
can do that the average user needs. It has most of the features that

 cross-platform-compatibility with Win/Mac/Linux/Sparc/Solaris/FreeBSD

That makes sense. The overloaded fuse holder just got worse with age
and finally gives up.
I just detach the wires for that fuse at the back and splice in a
spade fuse holder and go from there.
Thanks you all.

Fuse # 11 (25A) indeed feeds the blower speed control and the Compressor

If I run the blower without the compressor on (unplugging the pressure

The fuse gets extremely hot (discoloration of paper in fuse box

That the fuse gets that hot indicates that you may have bad

Re: [MBZ] Quick Mercedes trivia questions

2007-09-19 Thread Rich Thomas
When I was a kid maybe 5 or 6 a friend of my dad bought one of those
huge Caddies with the monster tail fins and came over to take us for a
ride. I sat in the back, and found some seatbelts, which were quite a
novelty so I put mine on. He then proceeded to demonstrate the rear
seat reclining feature, which involved the whole lower cushion motoring
forward and pulling the bottom of the back with it. This of course
worked to squeeze my innards considerably, and was quite frightening. I
believe I yelped, and all laughed at my distress. I am still in therapy
over that event, and have used it as a successful defense for all my
transgressions for many years now.

Re: [MBZ] OT Quick Mercedes trivia questions

2007-09-19 Thread Loren Faeth
Seat belts were mandated by the Feds in all US cars in 1966 model
year on. Foreign models sold in the US after some date, possibly
Sept 1, 1965 also had to have seat belts installed, thus the dealer
install for a year or two, before the 3 point system was std in the
/8 series, and 108/109, at least for US models sold through MBoA

The 3 point system was not mandated by the Feds until years later, so
once again, in reference to 3 point belts, MB was AHEAD of the pack again.

The PO of my 66 200D had removed the seatbelts. I had to find
junkyard belts to put back in it. and in the front, I used Volvo
center mount clip belt system, It does not leave a clip end of the
belt dangling, and is a much cleaner install than the belt bolted to
the floor. But there were no retractors on the Volvo 3 point
system. Those were standard on the /8 cars etc by 1968, but NOT on
Detroit iron. Once again, MB was ahead of the pack, and Fed mandates.

seat reclining feature, which involved the whole lower cushion motoring
forward and pulling the bottom of the back with it. This of course
worked to squeeze my innards considerably, and was quite frightening. I

is from an affluent DC suburb in VA, and has not been driven

in good running order. Changing the trans fluid/filter did
clear up the glitch in the transmission from last year. I
want to find a 92-93 TE to replace it. It has the third
seat. It is not a show car, but it is very decent looking.
It is missing the inner fender plastic liner, and has the
front of the rocker bent from the worthless new Jokohama tire.

the really good: New rear struts and steel hydraulic lines
to the struts, rebuilt tandem pump and lotsa fresh special
 fluid in the
suspension system. It has never leaked a drop since I put it back
together. Tires are good-very good. Has a good aftermarket
 alpine cd player.

Interior is good, but not pristine. no holes or tears in the
interior. It matches the 87 300TD I am also going to sell
later in the fall. It has been fun to have a matching pair.
We play fool the neighbors. Buy a pair, have a ball!

I will be listing the car for sale in early Nov, after I have

Open source, free software, other similar terms are used to

Open*Office* is a particular product. In it is a word
processor that is competition to Abiword. Abiword is smaller,
but is a word processor only, while OpenOffice also has
spreadsheet, drawing, presentation (like PowerPoint TM), paint,
and database. If you have Abiword and then add Gnumeric for
spreadsheet, Inkscape for draw, the GIMP for paint, and any
number of database choices you can do much of what OpenOffice
does - except OpenOffice - like MS Office - allows a text
document to have a spreadsheet or draw item in it, etc.

In many respects, I think the stand-alone products are better -
but they don't integrate with each other which can be a big deal.

It is missing the inner fender plastic liner, and has the

later in the fall. It has been fun to have a matching pair.
We play fool the neighbors. Buy a pair, have a ball!

I will be listing the car for sale in early Nov, after I have
time for cleanup/fixup, but if anyone wants it now, please
email me offlist. everything is there to make a car that
will run another 100k to 200k miles even in the rustbelt with
proper care and a little TLC. Good for hauling newspapers,
pets and other stuff. I can show you the receipts for the
new struts and lines from Rusty, along with a few hundred
dollars worth of other parts. When I got it I put in a new
coil and battery too. We drive it regularly on 500 mile trips.

My thoughts, also. I took my daughter down to look at it. Turns out the
reason it was so cheap is that it wouldn't shift. A bit more looking at the
other cars on that lot and she decided to look at private sellers. The entire
lot was dirty and much used and abused.
At this point she is looking for either a Voyager or a Corolla [less than $4k].

So it was leased in 2000, auctioned to a dealer resold less than a year later
(first owner must not have liked it), traded in 2003, auctioned to dealer,
resold, traded in 2007, auctioned to dealer, and now the car's been sitting
there unsold since April? Quite a history for a 7 year old car, not that it
really says anything about the car itself. A good PPI would tell you more about
the car's condition than trying to draw inferences from the Carfax, but at
least it hasn't been stolen, crashed, or flooded.

You have to compare like vehicles and in this case you have to compare
convertible to convertible. What would a late-60's through mid-70's SL
convertible in excellent condition go for? $17,000 - $24,000? Remember, I

You can get, even around here probably, a good Mercedes for about a

And isn't the design, quality, safety, etc. etc. of a MB vastly superior?

Thanks, Mak. There are three unmarked terminals on the compressor. One
 is
undoubtedly common since it has the thermal protector in series with it.
 If
 I touch
the other two terminals in order to find out which will run the
 compressor,
am I going to damage it if I touch the wrong one first? One shows 1.2

I have used an redundant fridge compressor as a vacuum pump.
as the compressor will not be under a starting load as a vacuum pump
 it
will run without a capacitor just on the 'Run' winding as mine does.

The circuit diagram is illegible from exposure to rain, etc. The fan
 motor
has three leads so I suspected it is a typical three speed motor setup
 and
it was confirmed on the label but the label gave no color codes for
 the
wires. The compressor also has three leads and a (common?) lead comes
 in
through a separate thermal switch .
