[MBZ] Bad fuseholder

2007-09-22 Thread archer
When a fuseholder in an '83 300D overheats, melts the plastic, oxidizes the
contact, etc; what is the best fix? All I can think of is to solder wires
on the contacts, run the wires outside the cover and attach a regular
fuseholder.
Thanks,
Gerry Archer

Re: [MBZ] Why no two stroke diesels? Damn good reasons.

2007-09-22 Thread Robert Bigham
Two stroke diesels need superchargers to get air in the cylinders, as
Hendrik
says. They tend to have a narrow power band, as Tom Hargrave said.

Herewith an illustration of why no two stroke diesels in cars, taken from
real life:

When I was in the army in a past life, my unit had Letourneau Turnadozers,
which were an abominable tractor with four huge fat rubber tired wheels on
a
really close coupled short wheelbase. They steered with steering clutches
and
brakes, all electrically operated. Each one ws issued with a large VOM for
troubleshooting. They needed the VOM's.

The power unit was a GMC 6-71 diesel, supercharged of course, at the engine
drove a generator. The engine ran at one governed speed which must have
been near as fast as the thing would turn. You could hear one screaming
for it
seemed like miles. The supercharger made much of the scream I forget how
we started them. Seems like we popped ether capsules in a fixture into the
intake and cranked, with a starter of course..

I promise you no sane person would want anything even vaguely resembling
the
Tournadozer power plant in a car. Or a truck. And they shouldn't have
been in
The TD's. I understand the Tournapull, a two wheel pure pulling unit, was
really
pretty good. The TD's were awful. Nothing but trouble. It didn't help
that they
were old at the time.

Hendrik <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote
Subject: Re: [MBZ] Why no 2 stroke diesels

Two stroke in general never really took off in the car segment.
The disadvantage of 2 stroke Diesels is that they need a supercharger to
make em work. Why design a complicated 2 stroke engine when it is far
easier to build a four stroke.
Petrol two strokes don't need a supercharger and are relatively light,
which makes them ideal for applications where horsepower is needed but a
heavy engine isn't. Such as chainsaws, motorcycles (particularly off
road ones) and a variety of other special things.
Perhaps with the introduction of CDI technology we may see a two stroke
Diesel in cars, or even small Diesel motors in general.

I guess the old cliche about beauty being "in the eye of the beholder" is
true!

Evidently more people feel like you than I since the W107 was so popular for
so long. I guess the earlier W113 was appealing to me because it was
smaller.

Anyway - there's plenty of them out there and for a while they never dropped
below $14K - now I see many for $5K to $10K. But they probably need a lot
of work --

Enjoy your weekend -

I had a 300sd and 300e and side by side and in daily driving preferred
the performance of the sd. If you have any hills, the 617 pulls
better. For the same peformance the 103 is shifting more often to get
into a powerband that isn't that great to begin with- and this is in a
124 chassis car. The 126 is heavier, but not by a huge amount.

420's and 560's can be had for dirt cheap now, and the mileage
difference isn't great.

My suggestions, in order of desirability:

1) Restore the existing contact by burnishing it clean.
Can't do it if it's deformed the fuse box, though.
2) Replace fuse box with junkyard unit. Not that hard
to do on a 123.
3) Run ring terminals from the screws behind the
fuse box to a proper external fuse block.

Hi, Ed et al.
100psi. plus works well, note that in most home air systems there is a lot
of water, so don't take all day to do one cyl it might just rust up over night.
Locking the crank is probably the best idea. It is sometimes impossible to
balance the crank/piston at TDC as it likes to quickly go to BDC under pressure!
Happy Wrenching.

I continuely find myself wondering about your replies.
You ask, I give you actual instructions that WILL work and you want to
cirumvent them in ways that don't make any sense. Have you at least pulled the
headliner down and looked in there yet? Maybe theres a dead squirrel or
something blocking up the works...

No removing the headliner is not just to give you something to push on its to
allow you to push on the ONE THING THAT WILL HELP YOUR SITUATION EXACTLY. Thats
why I said to do it...

Besides which a suction cup thats strong enough to help in this case will
surely damage the paint.

Okay, so is the removal of the headliner simply to gain access to
something to grab ahold of and pull?

If so, I might consider using a suction cup (cheap dent puller dealy)
and trying to pull from the outside.

YE! Just activated my manual sunfroof!!

You guys didn't tell me this was an option.

Opened the sunroof by hand about 3/4 of the way. Pulled down the
healiner in front. First tried to pull it forward and out, but
wouldn't go. So pushed it back. Then pulled the roof shut.

Then after trying to think of things I might wedge in there to keep
the roof lifted and sealed up, decided to pull in that bar. That made
it pop up to apparently sealed position. YES!

Then dawned on me that I can simply open the plataged thing by hand
and shut it as desired and put the silly headliner back forward when
done.

Couldn't have done it without youz guyz' advice. Thanks.

Now, to remove the motor for increased fuel efficiency.

D-Jet works just fine, but the repair parts (trigger points, dizzy, and

250,000 mile range just like anything else. Otherwise, don't run them

Re: [MBZ] 220D, syncro van, fox ads

2007-09-22 Thread Robert & Tara Ludwick
The audi wasn't worth that much new. Those things were a wiring problem
waiting to happen, at least all the dead and dying ones that crossed my
path not long after they were new.

Too bad the syncro isn't a diesel.

Re: [MBZ] M117 in a W108 (was Re: M103 vs OM603 vs OM617: Help medecide)

2007-09-22 Thread LarryT
Ditto what Peter said - mine had a cam go bad and the injectors needed
replacement from time to time. So it wll cost a small fortune in maintaence
costs (at least that was my experience) - but the biggest problem with the
W108 with the 4.5 is the poor fuel economy. Mine, a 72 SE 4.5, when tuned
*perfectly* with all new parts would get 12-13mpg's. Fantastic
acceleration - would chirp the tires when shifting from 3rd to 4th when
carried out to max rpm;s.

Like you and others, I love the W108 and read somewhere that the MB
engineers considered the 280SEL 4.5 to be the best big MB ever. Awesome car
though - especially when gas was <$.30 per gallon.

2007-09-22 Thread OK Don
Having owned both 617 and 603 cars, I far prefer the 603. It's a much
nicer engine - smoother and quieter. By at least one estimate, must
of the heads that are going to crack, have already. Mine has over
300,000 miles, original #14 head, is still strong, and no cracks (yet)
(knocking on wood as I type this). I love the SDL -

Best boss I've ever had. Stays out of my way as long as my work is up to date.
If I tell him we need something we get it, etc.
I've been working for him pretty much for four years (less a six month disaster

With the exception of working for my Dad this is the only boss I've ever had

Interesting. I LOVE the performance of my 300SD, and never expected
to, given the numbers it posts. It's not neck-snapping, but it's
very responsive and with the wide torque band and wide-ratio
transmission, acceleration feels virtually linear right up to top
speed. It seems to have just about as much punch at 80 as it does at
30. My Chevy Caprice with a 305 4V, K&N intake and at least 40 more
hp and about the same vehicle weight was completely gutless by
comparison, especially on the highway. 85 was all it would do on the
flat, secondaries howling, and it downshifted for the slightest
grade. Speeding up in overdrive was virtually impossible, and even
kicked down, it seemed to make more noise than power. Most annoying.
I rarely bother to kick down the SD, even for two-lane passing, and I
LOVE that the kickdown switch is a firm detent, so you're not
downshifting unless you choose to. In the caprice, you always felt
like you were straining the limits of the engine and driving much
harder than you actually were; the SD seems effortless, even wide open.
