In a word, Yes. I suspect you'd probably be ok for a long trip like that -
you won't use the brakes a great deal since most of your trip will be on the
Interstate.

The rotors NAPA has will probably be fine if you'd rather not wait to get
Rusty's.

Subject: [MBZ] Brake disks

Well, I was able to get one wheel bearing seal in place successfully using
a piece of 2x4, a hammer, and going very slowly.

I did notice that the brake disk looked a little thin, so I looked up the
spec in the shop manual: 10.6 mm = 0.417. Mine measures 0.385.

I presume this means I should change the disk before I put it back
together and drive it 2500 miles.

 Correct?

Having already overnighted seals from Rusty (he sent the other part number
the second time and the right ones came) but not been able to leave for
the IowaQ because of a sick wife, I have gotten the word that the wife
wants to leave town at the end of the week when she expects to feel
better. So I guess I'd better get it fixed. Or drive the Big Red Van (a
1989 Chevy S20 Sportvan Beauxville) which gets 15 mpg.

NAPA had seals that looked wrong, I wonder if they have the correct brake
 disks?

Are the underbody panels available from MB? If so, I assume they;re
expensive?

I would think the panels could be fabricated without too much trouble. The
fiberglass doesnt have to be very thick and there's plenty of acoustic
material available.

I guess if there were a market for them someone would make them?

Did anybody ever do a successful install of 90-93 panels on a 1987?

spec in the shop manual: 10.6 mm = 0.417. Mine measures 0.385.

I presume this means I should change the disk before I put it back
together and drive it 2500 miles.

Correct?

Minimum brake disk thickesses are usually intended to protect the calipers

You didn't hear this from me.

NAPA had seals that looked wrong, I wonder if they have the correct brake
disks?

Here they have the cheapest 123 replacement disks.

Great idea. And seeing my pads are thin, almost down to the wear sensors,
going back to a new-pad thickness would buy some time for parts to arrive.
Living out in the boonies of northern New Mexico can be a drag sometimes.

There's 2 - one covers the underside area of the transmission and another

Not only do they keep the engine clean, but they help reduce noise levels
greatly.

My '78 240D doesn;t have them but it may not have ever had them to begin

They also keep the engine cooler by directing the airflow across the
radiator out under the car. It really does make a difference,
especially on the highway.

I'll have to pull the ones of my old car, probably need to rescue it
from the towing service soon, even if I'm not paying for storage there.

Making them from fiberglass wouldn't be hard, once you had a mold (lol).

Probably the display module in the instrument panel (a single unit
with the LCD). They seem to go bad if you look at them funny. While
you have the panel out you can lubricate the speedometer cable (stops
it jittering at low speeds), change all the bulbs and the Red Fuse,
and repaint the sun-faded needles if you're really anal. It's also
easier to get the left and center dash vents out at that time to clean
them and change the bulbs, too.

Re: [MBZ] outside temp gauge on W124

2007-10-08 Thread Peter Frederick
The thermistor that drives the gauge is behind the front bumper. If
the leads are corroded and have high resistance, it will read
incorrectly one way, shorted or grounded on the feed side it will
read the other (I think very low temp would be an open circuit). My
new 300D reads +130 C all the time, I suspect it's shorted.

I don't think it will take off, perhaps one or two posts along the lines
of Chinese guns = rubbish and a couple of posts agreeing that if it
ain't American or Euro iron it ain't worth shooting.

NAPA had seals that looked wrong, I wonder if they have the correct brake
 disks?

Dear all,
This most likely has been addressed before by this august forum, but I forgot
how often the coolant should be changed. Every 30 K? 3 years?
Where do you get it these days? Used to be NAPA for my location.
  Thanks.
