Can't figure it out why some folks only associate bad evaporators in the early 90's with the W140. There are thousands of W124 owners who would only wish this was true. Re: [MBZ] loose air cleaner, 300D/ my $0.02/ check your mounts
All joking aside, Graingers has the rubber mounts in 5/16 inch thread size. These will require a little drilling and tapping but they will last a long time! They also have them in 1/4" but you can't tell the difference once they are mounted. I also have added metal to the mounting bracket to reinforce the weak areas. My bracket is about 4 years old now and before I was buying one every couple years. By the way, a very sharp mechanic, at Tri-stars Petes old place, told me that the filter bracket failure was due to bad motor mounts. That was after I took a filter bracket back within a year of purchase, after it failed. They gave me a new one, free, but added the above caveat. Regards, Originals are 6mm and are a little fragile for their application on the turbo diesels.: I wonder where he could buy those? Re: [MBZ] Reliability/1994
<< Yes. That was the new model year that a Mercedes exec was bragging about reducing production costs by 35%.>> < <> That was a trick question and you fell for it, quoting the party line without any real knowledge. I owned two 201s and both had endless shop visits while in warranty and the 2.6's engine got new pistons at 70K miles paid for by MB. When I bought my '95 C280, the number of problems plummeted and it was clear that the car's components were better built than the previous model. That's my personal experience with the cars. This was before the wiring harness problems showed up, of course. As far as W202s costing 35% less to build, this is the first time I've heard that one. What I do know is this. Right about that time, Porsche was in dire straits because their cars had become so costly that sales were in the dumper. And so they hired a Japanese consulting firm to help them survive. The factory and supply lines were revamped with just-in-time parts instead of stacks of stuff all over the place. The old-timers either went with the program or retired. No choice. And from that reorganization, Porsche's unit cost dropped 30% and the company pulled out of it. Not only that, soon after they produced their very first no-defects car in their history. The rework department's workload almost disappeared. And now, their profit per unit is the highest in the industry, worldwide. The actual cost vs. quality screwup was in the W203 and W211 models and my experience with my '01 C320 bears that out. I expect my two day old W204 to establish a new benchmark in MB reliablity, based on pre-production testing. The purpose of this tale is that I have suspected that Mercedes also took a little "advice" from somebody about that very same time. Just speculation, you understand. I think you are absolutely right but on the other hand, trying to deodarize seems like a good idea in any event. My F150 has the mouldy smell. My 300D has the rubbery smell. Different biology but still an unpleasent smell. The disinfectant is more likely to be successful on the mould but I am not anxious to tear the heater apart on the 300D - especially since I don't drive it in the winter. I only get a little bit of heater use spring and fall. No problem with smell when running the AC so far. Re: [MBZ] Heater question
I have to admit that the smell of Lysol does not really turn me on. Not much better than the smell of warm rubber. I wonder if Fabreeze or something similar would work? I had a brother-in-law (now divorced by my sister) who used to douse the seats in his Lincoln with men's cologne. Not too bad once it settled in a bit but a bit overpowering just after he did it. Don't know if he could switch brands or if he was stuck on the first one after he did it. Brut, anyone? Allen wrote: There does happen to be a '91 Vanagon for sale nearby, can't tell what kind of shape its in from the ad. Claims to have had rebuilt heads (the need for this is not uncommon from what I recall). Other than the engine, are there any other problems that these vehicles are prone to? If you are getting a stock vanagon, later is better, as various small things improved along the way. 86 on are the best, '91 was the last year. (Actually, I thought it was '90, but I must be wrong.) The problem is the head gaskets leak, corrode the heads, and the heads need to be replaced. It was a design flaw that was never remedied, and for which there is really no cure. THey pretty much all do it, and since there are two heads, fixing 'em can be expensive. Check to see that the VW-specified coolant was used, and continue to use it and change it on schedule, which can slow down, but won't stop, the problem. Known weak points: --THe A/C units never performed very well, as they must blow the air all the way from the rear of the vehicle. Also, they're known for throwing belts. And since the van is hardly overpowered to begin with, they extract quite a penalty in performance. Most of us do without, although with diligence, they work OK. --Clutch masters leak, dripping brake fluid on your foot and the carpet. Not a huge job to replace. It's beneath the instrument cluster. --Heater lines can rust out. They run the length of the van. Someone out there makes ss replacements, however. --Waterboxers are a plumber's nightmare of cooling and radiator hoses, many of which look like octopi and most of which are NLA. Most of us end up replacing them with straight hose joined by sections of copper or pvc manifolds which we fabricate ourselves--not too tough, but time consuming. --The 4-speed transmissions had a flawed 3-4 slider design. If it is stiff shifting out of 4th gear, subtract $1500 from the price. There's a guy on the west coast who rebuilds them for about a grand a pop, installing a new, improved, VW-redesigned slider that won't break, and offers a 3 year warrantee: aatransaxle.com. The three- speed automatics are quite rugged and trouble free, tho I personally wouldn't want a vanagon with any fewer than 4 ratios. That's pretty much it. The Wasserboxer is the main problem. They're not particularly fuel efficient, and are pretty complex and fussy. The chassis and body, however, is damn near bullet proof, a pleasure to drive except in gusty crosswinds, and quite comfortable and capacious. I plan on keeping mine forever. [MBZ] loose air cleaner, 300D
Allan, As others have already indicated, it's probably your air cleaner bracket which has broken and, if you haven't changed the rubber bumpers in recent years, you'll probably be money ahead to get these at the same time. I got tired of the air cleaner bracket breaking every 2-3 years, and this was when I was storing the car in winter months, so I had a heavy gauge piece of steel welded to the area of poor design where they always seemed to break on my '84 300D. This was 3-4 years ago and the thing is still in one piece. P.S. - Some have suggested in the past about installed a rubber shock doughnut between the air cleaner housing and valve cover to dampen the vibration. My experience has shown that this didn't help, as the lousy brackets break anyway. Good luck. G. M. Re: [MBZ] New Mercedes Diesel/Piezio
Piezio to me was: hit a rock, generate a spark. This would be the opposite; provide a spark will move a valve, a glorified solenoid valve. These electronic injectors are so quick that they permit 3 to 5 firings per power stroke, which controls the severity of the flame front travel and gets more power while reducing the noise level and emissions. They respond (open and close) much faster, allowing more control of the injection cycle. There's a bracket above the turbo that the air cleaner is mounted on via three rubber buffers. Sounds like your bracket broke. The one on my 300SD was brazed before I bought the car, doing OK so far. My air cleaner was bolted right to the bracket, so I bought three buffers from Rusty. Some people like to put a broken buffer or a shock absorber mount donut between the housing and the valve cover to stabilize it, they claim the bracket lasts longer that way. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] extended cranking e320
This is absolutely true. The plug boots that sit below each coil pack absorb a lot of heat and moving them around while changing the plugs has caused more than one to fail. The wires that go out the side of the coil pack to the other spark plug bank tend to fail less often. Most often the failure mode is such that you will feel an occaisional miss ant idle, but engine will run fine at speed. Guess a hard start could occue as well, but I hadn't heard that one. Re: [MBZ] 87 300D valuation
Before you do anything else, try to get Joe Knight to cough up the URL for the guys in virginia that did (at the cost of $25-35) a value range assessment of the vehicle, You answer a bunch of questions about the vehicle in question, and they return back the fair market value range of the vehicle. While not an appraisal, it is incredibly effective at getting an insurance company to call up quickly offering to send an appraiser out on their dime. Another thing to consider is to ask them to get a salvage bid for the vehicle, rather than just arbirtrarily taking 20% or so off the top for you taking the vehicle. Copart (or whomever) rarely pays them that much upon hearing how the vehicle is damaged (probably would be in the range of $400 for your car), and the insurance company typically pockets the rest. If this doesn't get Joe out of the woodwork, I'll dig through my archives and see if I still have his note. Re: [MBZ] Post Falls SL
OK, so the plug wires are shot and I need to get new ones. But what can I do _today_? I need to be driving this car, if at all possible. So, I pulled the coil wire, wiped it down, and put it in the shop oven to dry. While drying, I cleaned the dirt out of the coil cover and put it in the oven too. The wire was then warm, and presumably dry, so I then dipped the wire part in a can of lacquer, let it drip off a bit, then put it in the oven. After a few minutes it wasn't tacky anymore but was still flexible, so I put it back in the car. Where it had been arcing to the valve cover I wound electrical tape around it, then dipped that too. After a bit of drying, I took it back to the car, cut a length of bicycle inner tube (mountain-bike size) and slipped the wire through it. (Belt _and_ suspenders!) The two worst offenders from last night, #5 and #7, also got the lacquer treatment. The bundle of spark wires (#'s 5-8) were tubed as well. (That tube had to be slit open and tie-wrapped back together. The other four spark wires were routed much better, but I still tubed them too, through the point where they went through a plastic grommet on the way to the plugs. I then cut some more rubber and placed it over the idle solenoid, as one of the wires goes close to that. I put the valve cover back on, and cut some rubber to go between it and any spark wiring that wasn't already well-protected. This entire procedure added at least one extra layer of insulation anyplace the wires were touching metal. For grins I pulled plugs 1-4, and they didn't look too bad. They could use a good cleaning, but I didn't have time this morning. The plug sockets were all Beru, as were the cap ends that I checked. The car started _much_ easier than on most mornings, although it _was_ dry, and idled at a much more reasonable RPM. I think I'm on to something here! Hit the front door as I drove across the highway doing about 60, wasn't watching the road (duh). I got away with some glass embedded in my left arm (gotta go have that dug out in the next day or to, I think) and some very sore ribs. Didn't break the fountain pens in my front pocket or bend up my reading glasses. Dash is completely crushed, had to break out the climate control pushbutton unit and drive the side back to get the glove box open (my brother did, I'm not able!) to get my stuff out, like the spare set of rear pads I've not gotten around to getting installed. A helpful passerby found some long needlenose pliers (probably off the Sheckel van) and turned the engine off, it was running about half throttle and boiling (no radiator cap to keep the pressure off the cracked head). The keys are about 6" inside the dash now, it's that badly crushed. Climate control split in half and folded up, center vent crunched, what a mess. Front doorpost is pushed in at least 18", tire is lying over at 45 degrees or more (lower control arm not bent much if at all), door is pushed in at least a foot. Windshield is busted, floor pan is VERY narrow, console cover is torn up and shoved up 6" or so. I unbuckled and climbed out the passenger side. Other than the punch in the ribs I'm fine, got a cut from my exploded coffee cup that flew out of my carrier bag. Cell phone still works in spite of being thrown onto the floor under the front seat from my bag in the right seat, haven't tried the computer yet, but the bag was still on the front seat where I left it. I ended up pointing straight south rolling down the median from going straight east, no skid marks other than my tires going sideways, I don't think he ever touched the brakes. Other driver was fine, airbags went off, so that's good (although I'm NOT pleased at my car being wiped). Not a good feeling to look up and see a vehicle speeding toward you less than 6 ft away and thinking, oh s this is gonna be bad. Didn't even black out, didn't hit my head, didn't bang my hip, knee, or feet. I feel much better about my mother driving a 300 TE, as much of a pain as it has been keeping it running nicely (idle and AC problems, finally fixed). At least if she gets slammed she is unlikely to be hurt. What a car! Now I gotta find another one.. Re: [MBZ] extended cranking e320
Car doesn't have typical wires - there are 3 coils, each run 2 plugs. Coils mount on top of one plug, and there is a short wire to other plug. I will check though. I changed the plugs about 4 months ago (which equals maybe 200 miles on the car since then, only drive a mile or two a day) I thought of your sl this morning when it happened, as it was very misty/foggy this morning. [MBZ] VW Eurovans
Allen Wrote: I've suddenly been stricken with the idea of trying to find a VW Eurovan in good shape. I really like the seating configuration and interior space layout. Anyone have any experience with them? I had a Jetta years ago and was quite satisfied with it. How is the VR6 engine, longevity-wise? I know the old wasserboxer in the Vanagon was pretty high maintenance. I don't own one, but spent a week in one once. They're a pleasure to drive, handle quite well considering, have very comfortable seats all around, and lots of space. The VR6 is supposed to be a good mill, and has plenty of power, but is thirsty: a friend of mine with a passat wagon gets 17 or so in town, and she's a mom with small kids who drives conservatively. VWs in general have horrible reliability ratings in recent years, and my friends with new ones have all been affected. Electrical, mainly, but pretty much everything else, too. I know folks who've had vanagons forever that eventually went to Eurovans and were mightily disappointed on the reliability front. I wouldn't buy one. Check consumer reports. I have two vanagons, one with a eurospec turbodiesel, one with a Jetta gas engine. THey're both westfalias, and I love 'em. There's nothing like 'em, and the conversions--both very satisfying--get around the Wasserboxer problem. Were I to want a 7-passenger van and didn't want to go to a lot of trouble, I'd probably get a stock Toyota Previa with a stick shift-- they're mid-engined, handle very well, have legendary Toyota quality, get decent milage and power out of their 2.5 liter 4, and have very flexible interiors. If you're willing to get an automatic, you can get a turbo version of the same engine for a bit more power. Were I interested in going to some trouble, I'd get a late-model vanagon (they were made until '90) and have Hans at vanaru.com install a subaru engine in it. Any subie motor will fit, Hans does a great job, and the result is a very reliable, quiet vanagon, with anything from plenty of power to a rediculous amount of power, as even the sixes and the SVX tiresmoker will fit back there. Or, you can get thewestfaliaman.com to install a VW TDI motor in one--another good option if you wanted to stay diesel. Either conversion will run you about 8 grand, I think (don't quote me), plus the cost of the vehicle. Vanagons aside from their wasserboxer engines are great vehicles--50/50 weight distribution, so they handle great, 1-ton capacity chassis, so you can really fill 'em up, and since most of the weight is still between the wheels, they stay level and ride and handle even BETTER, and they have much more room than other minivans. They're in a class by themselves in that regard. They also crash test pretty well, in spite of appearances--they've got very beefy front ends designed specifically for that. Engine over the drive wheels gives them decent traction, and they're very good on rough roads or for limited off-road use. I love driving mine, and am regularly gone for 5k miles at a shot for work, living and working out of the van the whole time. If I had a choice between getting rid of my westy or my SD, the SD would be gone in a heartbeat, much as I love it. My 1997 e320 is taking more cranking to start lately. Has 133K and I changed the plugs a few hundred miles ago, old plugs looked good. Any ideas on what may be causing it to take more cranks to start? This morning I turned it over for about 10 seconds before it started. Some ideas I had are fuel filter, as well as the security device in the key. The car will not start with a valet key, needs to be the fob so I guess there is a sensor near the ignition. Perhaps my fob battery is low, although it opens/closes the doors just fine.
