Hi Russ,

Gerry,
Try the following and see if that works.
Let me know if it does or doesn't.

1.Install current full tar.gz of martian
http://www.barrelsoutofbond.org/downloads/martian/

G: After I download to a floppy or CD on another computer, where do I go on
Ubuntu to install it?

2.Unpack martian somewhere you can work on it
/home/user/martian or similar

G: Where on Ubuntu do I create the file "??/home/user/martian"?

3.As root go into the subdir where martian is located
and run the following:
make all
make install
then go into the subdir called scripts and run
./automate.sh
./remove_outdated.sh

G: Okay, I go to the subdirectory "??/home/user/martian". Where in that
subdirectory do I install the five lines of code? After installing do I
simply hit return?

4.Now you can delete martian it's installed

G: I guess I've used Martian as an installer and the five lines of code have
installed Martian or something else somewhere?

5.Edit /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common
DISABLED_MODULES=”” to say
DISABLED_MODULES=”ltm” this kills the nonworking ltmodem

G: Where do I go to do this in Ubuntu? I interpret this to mean I should
change: Edit /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common
DISABLED_MODULES=””   to read:  DISABLED_MODULES=”ltm

6.Edit /etc/init.d/martian
DEVICE=”/dev/ttySM0” to say
DEVICE=”/dev/modem”

G: Where do I find: Edit /etc/init.d/martian
DEVICE=”/dev/ttySM0”  ?

I change it to read: DEVICE=”/dev/modem” ??

7.Now as root enter
update-rc.d martian defaults

G: Where do I go to do this in Ubuntu?
..
G: This is what I meant by "hand holding". Those of us who don't yet know
our way around Linux or know the terminology don't know where to go in a
distro or what to do with this information once we get there.

Thanks,
Gerry

Re: [MBZ] OT Invisible Fences for Dogs

2008-01-14 Thread Zoltan Finks
Thanks, Mitch.

Well, if your cousin is open to the inquiry, I'd be interested in inquiring
of him or her. I'm all about the sharing of info.

Yes, the points you raise are potential pitfalls with these fences.
Nothing's for sure with them and most of it depends on one's having a
compliant, predictable dog. Have a "good" dog and life will be easy. Have a
dog like my current Dobie, and life is hard.

I don't believe Schnauzers are wimps, but dogs do vary all over the map
within any given breed. I bet the zap is set kind of high. Hey, seems to
work - it's probably smart.

Brian

You shared:I just remembered, my uncle's family also has electric fence at
three
houses. I can give you the email address of one of my cousins if you want
to ask more questions. AFAIK, none of the dogs in my uncle's family have
trouble with the fence. They stop just before the beeping point and yap
like crazy when I visit there. Even if I get them excited, I can't get
them to go closer than 10' to the fence. If they make a mistake and get
close enough to beep, they act like it's the end of the world and run
halfway back to the house. I suspect the collars are set strong enough
to make the dogs scared to death of the shock. (either that, or Schnauzers
are wimps)

Re: [MBZ] OT Invisible Fences for Dogs

2008-01-14 Thread Zoltan Finks
Love it, Jim. Refreshing to see common sense dog training once in a while. I
sometimes feel like saying what that butch-haired motivational weight loss
lady said back in the 90's: "stop the insanity!". Some of these modern
methods of appeasement-based dog training make me want to defecate.

The knee to the brisket is one of the best ways to cure jumping up. The only
reason I have not employed it much with our "Dax the Devil Dog" is that he
is from hardcore Schutzhund breeding and I still hold out for the
possibility that I will train and compete in that arena with him. I don't
want to do anything to break his in-your-face spirit, or to discourage his
enjoyment of jumping at people with confidence.

Someone mentioned, also, the use of a shock collar on a remote control.
Funny that should be mentioned, as just today my resolve was doubled again
after my being embarrassed at a public beach where several other dogs were
romping:

I always used to look down on folks who stood and feebly called to their
dogs while the dogs utterly ignored them. You see, I used to have maybe 90%
verbal control of my last Dobie - "Magnum", even when he was sincerely
interested in something else. Dax on the other hand leaves me embarrassed
time and again.

I employed the use of a "throw chain" with the late, great "Magnum". Sounds
cruel, but relax. You simply use a standard choker collar and tie it in the
middle like a figure 8. You throw it at the dog when it's ignoring you at a
distance. You do not aim at the head, ideally - eye injury could result. The
throw chain technique results more in the phenomenon of the dog feeling like
you can reach him at a distance than in his being physically hurt. In the
beginning, you keep two or three of them in your pockets and you might want
to tie a brightly-colored ribbon to them to aid in your finding them on the
ground. Magnum was successfully trained with the throw chain.

I haven't tried it with Dax yet. I'm quite sure that folks around here would
not have the stomach for me even gesturing with the chain, so I haven't
pursued it much.

Shock collar is in our near future! Yes, unstomachable still by some. But oh
well. At least I can argue that many, many people in this bleeding-heart,
holier-than-thou community employ Invisible Fences - and it's the same
concept, only more controllable.

Brian

Jim intimated:I cured our dogs of mobbing you when you opened the car
door. I just kept slamming their heads in the door until
they thought better of it. I really _tried_, too, and
would try to sucker them in and then WHAM! (But never
by calling them in or encouraging them, that's cruel.
Just ignored them, but was always ready on the door
handle in case they got too eager.) It didn't take too
long, then they'd wait outside the door range, so you
could at least stand up without getting dog in the face.

At that point a knee could be ready if they jumped up.
If they always go over on their ass with a knee in the
brisket when they jump up, they stop jumping up soon.

Sit!Good dog.That's where
we are now.

[MBZ] Where to Find Wiper for 190 replacement

Just tried to install it. It's about 4 inches too short.
Where do I get a correct one?

And any tips on the replacement process? I hate replacing wipers - usually a

I believe the biggest problem the military has is underpaid enisted men -

Online speed tests consistantly report 2Mb with DSL but were more ususally like

Cable is much better than DSL, if you can get it.

At our farm, I am thrilled that verizon has lit up their wireless

Just the blade or the whole arm? Did you install the existing arm?
Never assume what a PO did is correct.

I nearly always replace the whole arm, its so much easier and is only a couple
more bucks. Keep the old one as an emergency spare.

We purchased a Bosch wiper blade at Napa according to their look-up
 book.
Just tried to install it. It's about 4 inches too short.
Where do I get a correct one?

And any tips on the replacement process? I hate replacing wipers -
 usually a
bit confusing and tedious. 87 190D.

Prefer Honda but at 3 times the cost, I will settle for 3 or so

Now that comment about air cooled engines has destroyed a life long

Well don't let one contrary opinion spoil a dream! Air cooled engines
have some unique cooling issues, but overall it works well and on the
plus side you don't have a water pump to fail, hoses to burst,
radiators to clog and/or leak, etc.

IIRC, the 911 isn't really air cooled. Oil cooled might be a better
description. Don't most of them have oil capacaties greater than
the water capacity of my 300SD, and large oil radiators?

That might be -- I don't know much about Porches, but I'd be surprised
if it didn't also have fan-forced air cooling on the cylinders, pretty
easy setup on a boxer engine.

Even the VW bug engines had an oil cooler too, though, you're right.
I think that was more for keeping the oil temps under control than
actually cooling the engine though.

I should point out that in the beginning it took maybe
20+ swings of the door before I could get out with the
dogs standing back. Maybe an extra minute or two. But
I kept at it until they stood back, then I'd get out.
It really only took a week or two before they were
trained, with the odd refresher course thrown in as
needed. I still fan her face from time to time when
it looks like she's pushing the boundary.

The prior situation was intolerable. A dog dripping
with shit (we live in cow country) lunging at you
as you got out of the car in concert clothing, such
as my $1200 tux.

I'm paying IIRC $29/mo for 1.5Mb.

There are two types of wiper on a 201, the long monowiper and
the earlier double-wiper style. No doubt the chart gave you
the short one. You can also just measure the length of the
one you have and get the same length off the rack in the
correct back profile (shape of the rubber extrusion).

Re: [MBZ] OT Invisible Fences for Dogs

2008-01-14 Thread Bill
Brian - No experience with the good systems. I installed a cheap one that
did a good enough job until the dog got excited, then she just yelped when
she went through it. I might also add that it was used with a chain link
fence, and she went through that also. Any time there was a thunderstorm
[rather frequent in S. FL in the summer] I could count on her getting out.
She got out of a large dog crate [bent the substantial metal door], went
through our patio screen, and through the invisible fence and a chain link
fence [reinforced with rebar every 4']. She was simply terrified of the
noise. I doubt any invisible system would have kept her in. After multiple
trips to the pound and one to the judge we finally just didn't look for her
the last time [$600 in reinforcing the fence, invisible fence, dog crate,
and fines]. She was 'adopted' by a family several blocks away and we were
happy to know she was found by someone who could contain her. We had given
up. IMHO a lot of the success depends on the dog. Our current dog [40 lbs
heavier] would be no problem to control with an invisible fence, but we
don't even need that.

Subject: [MBZ] OT Invisible Fences for Dogs

Okay, not that I don't have any Mercedes questions, but I'm going to jump
into the OT mix here, as we need advice from any and all who have experience
with "invisible" fences for dogs.
Since moving into this house several months ago my wife and I have been
trying to decide which route to go with our need for a containment fence for
our two dogs. We cannot afford an actual conventional fence and as such are
going this route.

We have 1.3 acres but will probably only fence in maybe .75 acres or so.

Anybody had success with the most popular company "Invisible Fence"? How
about any other companies? Around here, we have found "Invincible Fence"
(the owner of which touts his fence's capability to contain any dog), and
"Pet Stop" (about which I don't know anything).

Finally, has anyone bought and installed one themselves? I can order one
from the Drs. Foster and Smith catalog. I am very tempted to install my own,
as the cost would be something around $500. We got quoted about $2000 from
Invisible Fence today. And we got quoted about $1200 by Invincible.

Also, what are thoughts on burying the wire in wet ground? Some of our yard
is wet much of the year.

I have trained dogs to an invisible fence before, but have not owned a
system.

I guess my chief question is about the advisability of trying to purchase
and install one myself. I know I can follow the instructions, but I have
heard (from only one source) that often one gets these systems in the ground
and they just won't function.

Re: [MBZ] Vacuum elements in a 85 300SD (126 chassis) - any oneelse been here?

2008-01-14 Thread George Larribeau
Well I got the Element out, I guess my OCD got the best of me.
The instructions were confusing at best, I guess I'm just a Dumb A** Oh well
the pride might recover .

I got it out by going through the center vent (leavening the frame
installed, hopefully I will never need to remove the frame, have no Idea on
that would be accomplished) Then the rubber duct that connects the center
vent to the heater box is carefully removed by pushing out the plastic
rivets. Leaving just enough to get to the cover screws on the heater box.
They must be 5.5mm don't have one of those but a 7/32 ¼ drive worked fine.
The actuator was still hard to get off ..broke one of the vacuum switch
valves in the process, reinstallation is going to be entertaining. Well at
least I found the mystery light source for the fiber optic cables that go to
the switches on the panel just above the radio. During this mess I removed
the wood trim piece on the dash, got really lucky on that. It could use a
little glue any way. I have also removed the speedometer to repair the
little 2 tooth gear that shattered quite a while a go. 28K miles estimated
by fuel logs .will order a new gear from odometergears.com I think I only
need the one gear, the little one with 12 teeth with the brass insert.
Wonder why they sell sets of gears .Still can not find how to replace the
lamp for the gear shifter, would be nice to get that replaced. OBTW when the
car is operated with the speedometer removed the other instruments are not
grounded properly, makes the temp peg, oil pressure read real low and the
fuel high. I did not notice it right away and was rather frightened. ( I
temporally added a ground wire while I repair the speedometer).

If I ever get this car back to respectable condition I will always remember
the suggestion:

> Unplug the vacuum element, stick a golf tee or whatever in the end of the
> tube, and use a small block of packing foam (not a peanut, the closed-cell

them
was more difficult. It also had a MAF which was replaced once under warranty.
It's hard to imagine that any of the M104's infamous headgasket and front

Well Dish Network and DirecTV were happy enough to do it, or at least
they did it whether they were happy or not.

I personally know at least 5 households that have switched from
Insight cable to satellite providers for this reason alone.

Now instead of watching football and basketball games I get to watch
whiny ads from Insight complaining about the "greed" of the Big Ten.

Congrats on the successful job. I realize it's too late to help, but FWIW
Harbor Freight sells a set of T-handle metric hex drivers that includes a
5.5 mm one for $10 or so. I remember being surprised to see a "fractional"

Yes, clearly the oil has to be cooled. However given the size of the
oil cooler and the rate of flow of the oil and the size of the oil
galleys etc. I don't think it would have much of a cooling effect on
the engine itself. Some, but not much.

I was specifically saying "Huh?" to the to-may-toe, to-mah-toe. I did
not understand what that meant in this context.

into a watery sludge in a matter of minutes - that is,
if the engine didn't fail first from the tremendous
heat load in the various components.

For the same reason, change out the springs under the monowiper arm if
they're original. In my experience after 20+ years a new one has a lot more
tension and holds the wiper much more snugly against the glass.

I'm a fan of replacing the whole blade assembly as someone else pointed out.
The tension goes out of them over time and they don't work as well. For a
few bucks it's a great safety item. Nothing worse than driving with smears
all over the window. Also put a bit of windshield wiper detergent into the
reservoir to help clean the windshield.
123 wiper blades and assemblies are no problem and can be bought anywhere
but I think only MB had the big mono wipers.

I'm wondering about copying a Linux boot CD to a 2gb usb flashdrive and setting
the computer to boot off USB. I used to have a Zenith Minisport laptop that
had DOS on a ROM chip inside it. That computer would boot in 15 seconds or less,
and it was only a NEC V70 CPU, I think it was 8 mhz. Worked fine for word
processing and minor spreadsheet work, I'd still be using it today if it
hadn't died on me.

I've seen those at thrift stores. They never have the external floppy
drive, though, so any document you want to get out of them, after you create
it on the plane or whatever, has to go through the serial port at 9600 bps.
The same issue keeps me from using my old Tandy 100 as often as I could (and
it boots in less than a second---take that!).

Re: [MBZ] which six

2008-01-14 Thread Hendrik Riessen
So if one of the motronic computers goes south it'll be cheap to replace?
Did the wiring harne$$ go bad on you or the next owner.
I think just about everyone on this list would prefer the maintenance/repair
cost of a CIS/E M103 over the motronic M104. A lot of indies are capable of
fixing a KE but some just don't have the equipment to handle the motronic,
this limit's your repair options.
Also I do not believe that your 89 had points, from memory MB did away with
points in the 70's and what do you mean by exposed ignition, in good shape
the KE ignition system can withstand a lot of wetness perhaps not as much as
the motronic but if the wiring loom is crumbling in the motronic you are
gonna be in trouble with moisture. Also what is different about the spark
plug boot on the motronic? This is one area where just about every petrol
powered car has an achilles heel in regards to moisture. I know some have a
cover built into the boot that shuts off the hole where the spark plug sits,
the M110 should have had that.
Nobody is disputing that the 104 has more power but the torque figures are
not quite as impressive and that's the thing about the 24 valve motor, it
really only craps on the 12v motor at higher revs and in everyday driving
you don't really get in the powerband. Sure if you are a bit of a leadfoot
then the 24v motor is better but as an everyday workhorse the 103 wins in my
opinion.
What about fuel consumption between the 2.6 and 2.8, given that the 2.8 has
electronic fuel injection it should have been a bit better on the juice.

They don't cool of by radiation faster than the air cools, which is
why dew and frost form on things.

The cover traps the heat and reflects it down, so the cars cool off

Re: [MBZ] air und oel

2008-01-14 Thread Hendrik Riessen
Technically the oil in every motor (except small two stroke) helps to
disapate the heat or in other words take the heat from a hot spot and spread
it around a bit.
Think oil jets under the pistons of turboed MB Diesels.
Some air cooled motors do not have a fan to blow air around the fins ie.
small stationary motors, some motorbikes.
As a side note, Deutz used to have trouble with their air cooled Diesel
engines in trucks because they would get hot as hell going up a hill and
then once over the top would cool down too quickly and crack the heads.

Absolutely.  If the oil wasn't cooled, it would turn into a watery sludge in
a matter of minutes - that is, if the engine didn't fail first from the
tremendous heat load in the various components. .Dan

First of all, the engine's primary cooling is air provided by the cooling fan
over the ribbed cylinders. Quoting from an early 911 shop manual, at redline
the fan sends 1100 cfs into the cooling shroud. The engines have a sizable oil
cooler mounted on the right front corner of the case which does not come into
play until the oil temp reaches 170deg at which time the thermostat opens,
sending oil into it. Oil temp will continue to rise until equilibrium is
reached
at about 210deg which is considered normal for the lower displacement
engines. Later higher powered versions have an OE front cooler with it's own
external
thermostat which sends oil forward to the cooler forward of the right front
wheel. Owners of track driven 911s very commonly install aftermarket front
coolers which are very effective. Early 911 Turbos, still on dino oil, could
reach
oil temps of 250 deg and above (idling in downtown Phoenix traffic at high
noon) and the experts used to advise, either get it moving to drop the oil temp
or shut it down.

All aircooled 911s have dry sump engines with the oil carried in a tank in
the right rear (more oversteer weight) which in the beginning (1965) carried
about ten quarts while the last of the aircooled engine cars carried more, not
including what was in the front cooler and it's supply lines. I have heard
numbers around fifteen quarts but don't quote me. The larger displacement
engines,
some turbocharged, produce considerably more heat and the oil plays a very
large part in cooling. Synthetics have been the norm since 1988, first Shell
and
now Mobil 1 0W40, even in the Carrera GT which is water cooled.

Cooling is now well controlled and even a 997 Turbo could trickle through Las
Vegas traffic in summertime with no thought given to engine temps.

Black body radiation indeed. The temperature of the night
sky is some ridiculous low number like 7 degrees Kelvin, or
around minus 270 degrees C. Radiative heat loss is proportional
to some power of the difference in temperatures that 'see'
each other. Relatively warm air temperatures restore heat
via convection, so things don't get too far out of hand, but
for that surface film of moisture on glass and paint, it freezes.
(Or condenses in the first place.)

So after 25 years of use, you say the independents can't fix them? Not in the
US where tens of thousands of Motronic cars (many more, probably) have been
sold of all makes. Fact is, the independants are the main source of repairs
since a lot of dealers don't want to see a car that they can't plug in to pull
the fault codes.
>

The '89 had a cap and rotor which had to be changed twice during my ownership
because of burnt components. Thinking about it, it may not have had points
which means it had a crankshaft postion sensor. The M104's plugs, coils (3) and
ignition harness, between the camshafts, were covered by a gasketed bolt down
water proof cover.

<>

The M103s plug boots were a SOB to pull off without damage and even though
the M104s were covered, getting the boots off was far from easy.

<>

Very little difference in real world day-to-day fuel consumption. Hell, my
'78 300Ds town mileage was about 21mpg and the 4 and 6 cylinder 201s were only
about 1mpg less. The M112 C320 hovered around 19-20mpg and the '08 C300 does
19mpg. Which is damned good considering it's weight and horsepower, 228.

My opinion of which six is based on which compnents are likely to fail
earlier than the other and what has been engineered out and I maintain the M104
is
better. Not as good as the V-6s, you undersatnd.

Re: [MBZ] 911 flat six temp control - Jacob R755

2008-01-14 Thread OK Don
The round 7 air cooled engine in My Dad's Cessna 195 came with an oil
cooler mounted between cylinders 5 and 6. It wasn't enough to keep the
temps in operating range in the OK summers, and had to be blocked off
completely to get the oil temp up into operating range in the winters
(flying to MN). So, we added another one between cylinders 3 and 4,
with a manually controlled butterfly valve to control the airflow
through it. We then could easily keep the oil temp where it belonged,
using both coolers in the summer, and blocking the original one in the
winter. Yes - you could watch the cylinder head temp vary with the oil
temp, though the mixture had more effect on managing it.
This engine used straight 50w oil - though I suspect that they are
using synthetics by now. The oil tank capacity was 5 gallons, and was
under the instrument panel in the cabin (wrapped in carpet). If it was
much below 0F, we had to turn on the Bendix gasoline cabin heater -
full blast - to get the oil warm enough to start the engine.

Real airplanes have round engines and tail wheels.

I used to think of Porsches as wannabe formula one airplanes. I don't
think much about either one now ---

[MBZ] OT: Air cooling

2008-01-14 Thread Curt Raymond
So I stuck up for aircooling this morning, then after lunch the wife and I took
a snowmobile ride. My '81 Arctic Cat El Tigre 5000 is whats known as a "free
air" engine which means theres no fan, its cooled by outside air passing over
the fins by the sled moving. Lots of '70s and early '80s performance sleds used
it. It works good as long as its relatively cold out (below freezing say) and
you stay moving. Its ALOT lighter than a liquid cooled machine which makes the
sled alot more nimble which I like.

However the snow we got last night is powdery but still sticky and as I was the
trailbreaker it kept plugging up in the air opening at the front of the sled.
I'd find this out when the sled would bog... Shut 'er down, clear the vent,
wait a few minutes, resume travel.
My wife on the liquid cooled Polaris had none of these troubles... Although her
machine decided twice that it just wanted to quit. No explanation on that one.

I meant that the heat in the oil had to come from

Re: [MBZ] OT: New Apple operating software

2008-01-14 Thread LWB250
Right now we're in the heat of battle between Verizon
(FIOS) and BrightHouse (TimeWarner) for
phone/cable/Internet. BH cranked up speeds as soon as
FIOS started to come out, but they didn't do anything
price-wise, nor will they haggle if you threaten to
bail. Their big thing is making everyone a
month-to-month customer, as opposed to Verizon's 12 or
24 month contract.

I'm with BH right now, mainly because I get a discount
as a university student. However, that will end soon,
since I graduated in December. Once that happens,
I'll roll over to Verizon, mainly because their
package deals that wrap TV, Internet, home and
wireless phones end up being cheaper than the separate
items and BH.

I think the biggest dealbreaker is BH's insistence
that you buy their bundle with unlimited phone
service, which has little or no value to us, as the
only long distance calls we make are done with our
cell phones, since our out of town family members are
all on Verizon.

This means we have to get boxes for all our TVs, but
in the long run it's a better deal.

Harbor Freight sells a set of T-handle metric hex drivers that includes a
5.5 mm one for $10 or so.

I have a similar set of standard hex drivers, but I would love to find a
metric set. I would be like a kid in a candy store in HF!

FTTH is Fiber To The Home. I don't know what FiOS is. Sounds like a new
operating system.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Cummins generators

2008-01-14 Thread Allan Streib
Yeah no argument. I guess I was taken aback by the assertion earlier
in the thread that the 911 engine was primarily oil cooled, I thought
that the majority of the heat would be removed by the airflow over
the cylinder and head fins. Certainly don't have much knowledge of
air cooled design though; the role of the oil cooler may well be
larger than I imagined.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Now I have Linux Mepis

2008-01-14 Thread Wonko the Sane
There should be an "install" icon on the desktop. If not, go to the home
folder, CD to Desktop, and it will be there.

During the install, you will be offered the opportunity to resize your
drive. It will warn you to back up your data first. Take their advice (if
you want to dual-boot or save what you already have).

After that gate, it is mind-numbingly easy. Walk toward the light and enjoy
no more blue screens of death. ... I've done so many installs that I know
what prompt will come up next. However, I can still recall the early abject
agony of hitting "next" thinking my computer would suddenly melt down. It
won't, trust me.

If you're using wireless, ndiswrapper will be your new best friend. If you
need to go there, ask and we will walk you thru it. Pretty easy from the
terminal. Scary if you have no one holding your hand.
