Re: [MBZ] limited slip in 560SEL into 300SD/Won't interchange!
Mitch is correct. the 420 and 560 V8s used a physically larger differential. The diesels, 6s, and the 380 small V8 used the small differential. Different flange sizes are just one of the problems. So you must restrict your posi search to 380 or smaller engined 126 cars.. Jim in Phoenix In a message dated 3/11/2008 7:37:47 P.M. Boy, do I have an old Ford wagon for you! Shame you aren't closer, I'd like to see it go to someone like you. It does hold some sentimental value for me, but the reality is, proper bodywork costs the same to do on an old Ford as it does on a Mercedes, so I think I'd rather allocate the funds to future work on a Merc and make new memories. [MBZ] WW2 carrier operations
Forwarded by a friend: http://marcbrecy.neuf.fr/pacificwarII.html Maybe now you will understand the rationale' for the old saying "that a Navy pilots breakfast is a puke and a cigarette". Some good shots here and mostly colorized. Check out the Corsair who had a hook skip then in-flight engagement on #4. Not the way to end an otherwise good flight. Notice also that the LSO is on paddles, thus the nickname. Also, I’ m sure most of you noticed, this is before the days of the angled deck. These go way back and some great pics of the greatest generation…..Cowboy Point of interest...about 3 minutes 20 seconds into the clip, you will see an F6F Hellcat, it's hydraulics shot away during a strafing run, pancake on the carrier deck and slew into the island. A deckhand was crushed between the aircraft and the superstructure and killed. The number on the plane is 30. The lanky pilot sitting dazed in the cockpit is a gentleman named Andy Cowan, a friend of mine. He is hale and hearty at 87 and lives just north of Salinas, Ca. To this day he cannot recall this accident without a tear coming to his eye. The swabby who was killed was his crew chief. Andy is a marvel. He has absolute total recall of those bygone days. He is regularly invited back to the Naval War College to give a power point demonstration to the young fighter jocks of today's Navy. They hang on his every word. A living link to the past.. to the days when you got up close and personal to kill the enemy. No over-the-horizon missile kills.. Andy was the longest serving Navy fighter pilot in WWII. He was on his shakedown cruise off Gitmo on December 7th, 1941. The carrier Ranger made flank speed to Norfolk and the pilots were transhipped to San Francisco by train, then sped to Hawaii by ship. He saw Pearl not long after the sneak attack, and again is unable to speak of it...a horrible disaster. He immediately went aboard the Lexington and in the course of the war had 4 carriers shot out from under him as he fought in every major Pacific battle. Coral Sea, Midway, Battle of Santa Cruz, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima...you name it. Credited with 4.5 kills. Flew with Butch O'Hare, Cmdr Thatch (inventor of the "Thatch Weave"), flew with high scoring ace David McCampbell...served under Admirals Nimitiz, Bull Halsey... He has studied the Japanese side of the Pacific War and is a recognized expert on their side of it. He can reel off the names of all their capital ships and admirals and battles from memory. Remarkable man...and still alive to tell the tale... ** It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms, and advice on AOL Money & Finance. No, 98s -- 10 yr old, at least that is what I have been able to figure from the articles in the paper written about it (I swear the idiots writing in the Houston Chronicle must have received their creds from a cereal box -- I have seen maybe 3 articles on the topic, and it is never really clear). Some issue in Mexico with the new and used car sellers getting undercut by the shitboxes they drag down there from Occupied Aztlan, so they got a law passed that the cars have to be 98s to get imported, next year it will be 99s, etc. (I guess). Probably does not apply to the newer F150s that are being stolen at a wicked rate. I used to see these clapped-out little pickups and minivans in a caravan, each towing another. I have seen the pickups with a front half in the bed of one, and the back in half in the bed of the other, 3 getting hauled down there. Or the trucks and minivans are full of old kitchen appliances. Re: [MBZ] Antenna success
Sounds like it is grounding out somehow. Contact to ground is happening when the antenna is fully extended. When you lower it a bit, the contact is broken and no more grounding fo the antenna core. Re: [MBZ] [Banned] SDL RUNS!
Im still too lazy to do half the projects I need to be doing. One thing I did do Sunday late was as I was putting up my tools from screwing around with that CAN 300E, I got a wild hair to try and pull the throttle actuator thing on the E420. Took me about 5 minutes and it was off. Not really THAT hard although there are a couple of bits Im going to have to buy new because I broke them taking this off. Now just need to either send it off to be rebuilt or find another one. Re: [MBZ] Antenna success
My new problem is that when I turn the radio on it cuts off when the mast is fully extended. If I manually lower using the switch, the radio springs back to life. The problem is intermittent, however, as the radio will sometime operate normally with the antenna fully extended for a long period of time (and vice versa). Re: [MBZ] PHX CL '97 E320
I agree, we are becoming a throw away society, and most things made today are not designed to be rebuilt. The problem with spending $5000 to repair an old mercedes if often, after doing so, you are still left with a car with a market value of $3500. I tend to buy things, and cars, that I really like and plan to hold onto, so I justify putting money into them, knowing I'll never get it out, but there are few of us around, and I'm the first to admit, my approach is not always the smartest financial thing to do. But I like my old cars, and I plan to keep them, so maintaining them in good shape is still cheaper than buying new Honda's ever few years. I don't really want either car, but of the two, think I would take the solid car without rust. I don't and can't do bodywork, but I know many of you have those skills. I look at cars like planes, providing the main structure is sound, you can keep rebuilding and replacing mechanical parts, and trim items. Once the main structure becomes compromised, it opens up a whole slew of potential safety issues and it's often best to put it out to pasture. Just my opinion though. Re: [MBZ] PHX CL '97 E320
Does the sun make them "oogy" or "funky"? I would have thought that dry would have avoided most of the funk. Heat dries out rubber and may not be good for upholstery and the sun may fade the paint but I would have thought that to be better than cold and damp. I had a Suburban that came from Kerrville Texas and the only real issue with it was that the red paint on the top was quite faded. I guess Texas would be a lot more humid than Pheonix but still that would have made me think Pheonix would be better. I do know that in Canada, one will be better off with a prairie car than one that comes from Ontario or Quebec because we do not get nearly so much salt on the roads out here. Salt works best at higher temperatures than we normally get. Plus, the snow sort of blows off of the highways out here but does not in the hills and woods of Ontario. They therefore use more salt in order to avoid the ice on the roads. If you don't need a screwdriver to pop off a rod's socket, it's worn enough you need a replacement rod.
