Re: [MBZ] OT: Motorcycle oil

2008-09-10 Thread Tom Hargrave
My Harley-Davidson doesn't leak either but my BMW motorcycle does.

Actually, the old Harley's that were accused of leaking were actually
supposed to! On some models, they routed the crankcase breather over to the
primary chain & the excess dripped of. Other models actually had a drip feed
onto the chain and the excess dripped off.

I run Jap bikes, they don't tend to leak, both mine have but I've made fixes
this year so they only leak just a little...

I don't remember if the 0w40 is "energy conserving" but it is also a diesel
rated oil... I don't think that being a better oil will hurt anything.
Marshall and I did discuss this at one point and he suggested the 5w40 since
as far as he was concerned it was the best oil Mobil had.

I ran about 5 miles tonight, didn't notice anything untoward which was what
I was looking for.

As always I'll mention my Dodge pickup leaks considerably LESS now than it
did before I started using Mobil 1. Its had Mobil 1 for something like
100,000 miles now.

Right about now I really miss Marshall..

I don't think the turbo diesel oils the best choice, a petrol powered MC
doesn't need the 'soot' capacity in the oil. However I have become
a
believer in tar Mobil 1 series of products. I was going to switch to the
0-40 stuff in my HD before I got pretzel-ed. I tried Mobil 1 a long time ago

in my Guzzi (soon to be resurrected, with valve and gasket service) but it
would leak too much.

The Porsche and BMW are now using the 0-40 stuff. I would not be afraid of
the small first number in the rating of Mobil 1 products. The important part

is it is still oil at outrageous temperatures. My past experience has always

been it likes to leak out and this is much more of a issue with a MC because

it makes it unsightly.

All depends on what you think is important. Would you run gas oil in your
diesel? Probably not. Then why would you run car oil in an air cooled
motorcycle engine?

The problem is when they do that their goop also clogs the drain holes
and the doors fill up with water and rust out faster than if they'd
never been treated. My parents had a car Ziebarted in the late '70s

Re: [MBZ] W201 capital of nation? world? Statistics - OT poverty in Africa

2008-09-10 Thread Bill R
Tyler said it quite well. One additional factor is the climate. My former
employer brought in a climatologist for one of our in-service weeks, who
basically said that due to the climate in much of Africa we can plan on
needing to help feed many in Africa 'forever.' I would say 'yes,' at least
until some other breakthrough comes along that is as significant as the
"green Revolution" of a few decades ago. One of our specialists stated that
the Moringa tree found in most of Africa is pretty much ignored, but the
leaves are so filled with nutrients that it has the ability to just about
wipe out malnourishment on the continent.
http://www.echotech.org/technical/technotes/moringabiomasa.pdf We have done
a lot of education thus far, and now have hospitals that grow it as a
nutrition supplement for the patients, and for women who take it their
babies have a significantly higher birth weight. An extra bonus is the cake
left over when the leaves [people food] and seed pods [yielding light
machine oil and cooking oil] are processed can be used to purify water -
some are starting to be used for this even in commercial filtration plants.
It also grows 15' - 20' a year, but is butt ugly. Look it up, though the
professional photos are prettier than any I have actually seen or grown
http://www.delange.org/Moringa/Moringa.htm .
I can't think of a time in history when there was not enough knowledge
or resources to take care of the world's population [some folks have
actually studied this issue,] and I also can't think of a time when we have
chosen to do so.
Enough already. Thanks for the perspective Tyler. I'll shut up now.

http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Motorcycle_Oil_FAQs.aspx#FAQs2

Two motorcycle oils. One for air cooled v-twins, one for inline two/four
cylinders. I run Mobil 1 for v-twins in my Ultra. In its owners manual it says
the if oil is needed and HD oil is not available to use a diesel rated oil. I
presume this is because it lacks the friction modifiers that are no good for
wet clutches. It also has more phosphorus (zddp) than other oils. If you look
at the chart from Mobil-1's website, you will see that the motorcycle oils
contain WAY more phosphorus than oils for motorcars.
http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Files/Mobil_1_Product_Guide.pdf
Judging by lack of friction modifiers and elevated phosphorus levels,
motorcycle oils would be the first choice, followed by both 15w-50 oils, then
5w-40 turbo diesel oil. For that matter, I run 5w-40 diesel oil or 15w-50 mobil
1 in everything I drive, except the bikes.

I read the book and was pretty disappointed. I had high expectations
since I love adventure driving and W201s, but this was some of the
worst travel writing I've ever read. It reads as a brief list of

engaging story IMO. If you think you might like it, might I suggest
instead Road Fever by Tim Cahill. It doesn't have a Benz, but it's a
much cooler story, that is very well written.

I did. It was an interesting, quick read. The author is not a car guy

Sure, they were the cheapest models when new, but they're also the
cheapest to keep on the road. Hence a 190D has a much higher utility
value than a 560SEL, so it makes sense that they'd have a higher resale

Re: [MBZ] OT: Motorcycle oil

2008-09-10 Thread Curt Raymond
I run Jap bikes, they don't tend to leak, both mine have but I've made fixes
this year so they only leak just a little...

I don't remember if the 0w40 is "energy conserving" but it is also a diesel
rated oil... I don't think that being a better oil will hurt anything. Marshall
and I did discuss this at one point and he suggested the 5w40 since as far as
he was concerned it was the best oil Mobil had.

I ran about 5 miles tonight, didn't notice anything untoward which was what I
was looking for.

As always I'll mention my Dodge pickup leaks considerably LESS now than it did
before I started using Mobil 1. Its had Mobil 1 for something like 100,000
miles now.

Don't know, but in "My Mercedes is Not For Sale," the author quotes an
aid worker as saying that you can measure the poverty of a country (in
Africa) by counting Mercedes 190s; the more 190s, the poorer they are.
I guess they're everywhere in most of the continent.

Re: [MBZ] Avalon?

2008-09-10 Thread Wilton Strickland
The Ziebart guys in The Soo drilled small holes to access cavities in doors
and body panels and sprayed well all inside with a good coating of
undercoating stuff, then plugged the holes. 'Seemed to be very thorough.
Much better than factory (especially Chrysler) at that time. 'Made the car
a little quieter, too. That was GOOD-driving/riding car, but not quite as
good as my 91 126.

2008-09-10 Thread R A Bennell
Yes Wilton I am in Winnipeg Manitoba - about 140 miles due north of Grand Forks
North Dakota. Rust is not generally
a huge issue here as we don't have the slushy weather conditions like more
southern areas. Undercoating is a good
idea if it is done well. Many new cars come fairly well protected these days.
Our now departed Avalon had been
treated to some extra protection beyond factory and that may be one of the
reasons it was still in very good
condition.

Re: [MBZ] Biden

2008-09-10 Thread Rich Thomas
At a rally in Nashua, New Hampshire, a man in the audience told Biden
how glad he was that Obama picked him over Hillary "not because she's a
woman, but because look at the things she did in the past."

"Make no mistake about this," Biden responded. "Hillary Clinton is as
qualified or more qualified than I am to be vice president of the United
States of America. Let's get that straight. She's a truly close personal
friend, she is qualified to be president of the United States of
America, she's easily qualified to be vice president of the United
States of America and quite frankly it might have been a better pick
than me. But she's first rate, I mean that sincerely, she's first rate,
so let's get that straight."

[MBZ] W201 capital of nation? world? Statistics

2008-09-10 Thread Zoltan Finks
I dont have any official info. on this, but it seems to me that where I live
has got to be among the places with the most W201s anywhere.
I know these models are much less prevalent than W123s, but in our little
town of some 20,000, I see so many! And across the Sound in Seattle, I see
many too.

Wonder if there is any source for statistics on how many vehicles of a
certain type reside in a given area.

And as for W123a, I know that when i lived in SE Minnesota, our 240D allowed
me to feel pretty special. But here I am one of the crowd.

Personally, I'd use Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W-40, since this oil is

Were you able to get a volume discount at Autozone? I buy almost 30

the Volvo Turbo).

Re: [MBZ] OT: Motorcycle oil

2008-09-10 Thread George Larribeau
Right about now I really miss Marshall..

I don't think the turbo diesel oils the best choice, a petrol powered MC
doesn't need the 'soot' capacity in the oil. However I have become a
believer in tar Mobil 1 series of products.

[MBZ] OT. Headlight Polish

2008-09-10 Thread Frederick W Moir
Hi. Alles.
My Daughter has a 2004 Jetta with cloudy headlight covers/lenses. Is
there any useful polish for these or is it replacement time?
For the '99 Toyota, the Janvil plastic polish kit works well, but has
almost no effect on the VW lens.
Any recommendations welcome.

Randy, I've forgotten where you are. Somewhere north of US border, isn't
it? Do they still do Ziebart rust prevention treatments up there? 'Had a
'71 Chrysler station wagon Ziebarted in about early '72 in Sault Ste. Marie,
ON. 'Don't know how well it really did; 'sold it in S. CA in '78, though it
still didn't have any rust prob then, so maybe it worked.

[MBZ] OT: Motorcycle oil

2008-09-10 Thread Curt Raymond
Its too quiet today, this should stir things up...
I'm in process changing the oil in my Kawasaki 454LTD. I'm gonna fill it with
Mobil 1 5w40 "Turbo Diesel Truck". LT Don's been using 15w50 in his. I figure
the TDT is at least as good as the 10w40 I've been using and possibly better.
Its not an "energy conserving" labeled oil so I *shouldn't* (scary word) have
trouble with the bike's wet clutch. If this works out my Honda will get the
same treatment at the next change and I'll only stock 2 oils (5w40 for the cars
and motorcycles, 10w30 for the pickup and small equipment, tractor, snowblower,
etc) instead of 3.
Need to find the regional distributor for Mobil 1 and see about a volume
discount. I buy 30 or so quarts a year... The guy at Autozone looks at me like
I'm crazy when I ask for a discount. One of these times I need to get ugly
about it. "look bub, I've bought 30 quarts of this stuff in the last 12

Re: [MBZ] Avalon?

2008-09-10 Thread R A Bennell
I actually suggested she might like another one but she says not. They are
basically just a fancy Camry. The older
ones were longer than a Camry but I am not sure that remains the case with the
newer ones.

Lord knows what she will end up with. I thought last evening we had decided to
check out some late model Chevy
Impalas but today at lunch that seems to have faded from her wish list. I guess
time will tell.

Nothing wrong with sourcing used brake lines from a junkyard providing you
know how to inspect them for age and damage. After all, aren't the brake
lines on your Mercedes just as old and subject to failure?

Nobody will sell you used belts.

And what you don't know is that belts in a wrecking yard could very well be
stretched (that's what they do) and must be replaced if the car is repaired.
Particularly if they are the self tightening type since that's a one time

I forgot to discuss the injection lines. If you are not too far off timing,
they may give enough to let you change, otherwise some adjustments by slight
bending will be required. IIRC, again, its been awhile, I loosened both

Re: [MBZ] Spill timing an OM603

2008-09-10 Thread harry watkins
Peter, this is from my experience on a 300 SDL.

IIRC, you set the engine to 15 deg BTDC then check the IP. Actually, you
can remove the timing plug and use a mirror to see the cam lug down the hole
and pretty well tell how close you are, its like eyeballing down a tube and
judging if the lug in the center. Marshall said his SIL could hit it spot
on without the tool.

To set IP timing, you loosen the three IP mounting bolts up front, plus the
one in the rear. Then using the adjusting screw on the IP, set the lug so
it fits in the timing tool and tighten it all back up.

The back bolt is a pain, but can be done.

I did not trust the small adjusting screw to do all the work of moving the
IP and helped it with a pry board as I took up slack.

Look like it to me! The other thing is if you have any timing chain
stretch you'll have to play with it some. The other thing I don't know
is how you actually check it. I guess you set the engine to 15 ATDC and

How would you do the timing using the lock tool? I guess the steps would be
1. Remove IP ( do you need to remove Manifold and or oil filter housing?
2. Set IP to 15 deg BTDC using lock tool
3. Set engine to 15 deg BTDC
4. By playing with the timing adjustment screw get the pump to "slot in"

Nonsense. Bridgestone made studded tires obsolete with the first

Re: [MBZ] What would you buy now?

2008-09-10 Thread R A Bennell
The best "deal" for the money right now appears to be a reasonably late model
Chevy Impala or Pontiac Grand Prix or
Grand Am or whatever they call it. I see 2005 models advertised with 25K miles
on them for $12K or so. Hard to beat
for size and price. Would also be similar in size to the Avalon that she had.

She only drives something like 600 miles per month and pretty well all of that
is in the city. I think the Avalon
was as far away as Fargo ND once in the 5 years we had it. Her cars usually
rust before the mechanicals wear out.
There may be an advantage to the Toyota on that issue as the 98 Avalon showed
no signs of rust and was 10 years
old. By way of comparison, my 02 F150 shows a bit of rust in the bottom of the
doors already.

She would be happy enough with an Accord or Camry but they want silly prices
for used ones. If we do decide to buy
new it will probably be a Civic. Probably won't buy new though. I have had only
2 new cars in my whole life and did
not find them any more satisfying that my used cars.

We have talked about small SUV's like RAV4 and CRV but again very pricy for
what one gets and used market is still
very expensive.

Not many Ford 500's around here. I don't think many were sold. It is a rare
sight on the road. I like the look of
the Buick Lucerne but expensive -might as well buy a Cadillac. Seems to be lots
of those used. Probably not what we
want or need though.

Not may Mitsubushi's around here either. I see the odd one but could not tell
you if there is a dealer anywhere
close. Friends have an Audi that they quite like.

Lots of choices out there. She will want to do something quickly though and
will not truly care what it is so long
as it is reliable.

We bought the Avalon after a Taurus and a Sable. The Sable caused a lot of
small problems and she complained
bitterly about it. We bought the Avalon in an effort to move up but it has
caused its share of small problems too.
The basic body is very good and we had no major problems with the drive train
but there were issues and some were
not resolved when it got wrecked. At least I don't have to work on it in the
next month. I was wondering how I was
going to get it all done and now I won't have to. It was due for a timing belt
and the steering rack needed to be
repaired or replaced. It leaked in cold weather - fine in the summer but left
puddles in the garage all winter.
Also was due for a change of the tranny fluid and the antifreeze. Had bought
both but hadn't done it yet. Also had
issues in the climate control system. Something was not right as it tended to
fog the windows in the cold
weather - probably related to the door that would cause it to recirculate the
interior air not opening.

So the silver lining is that I didn't have to work on this stuff. The bad side
is that I put $1100 worth of new
struts on it about a month ago and new rotors and pads on the back brakes about
2 weeks ago.

It had nice clean Mobil 1 in the crankcase so someone out there should get a
nice replacement motor to drop into a
Camry.

Unfortunately, a car is a fairly personal thing. Without knowing more about
you, your wife, your family and the wants, desires and needs of said
persons, no crystal ball in the world can really help. So we have to turn
the question around a little bit, and ask it from the other direction.

In my opinion, I wouldn't own a GM product of any recent vintage. They are
uninspired, also rans trying to keep up with other companies without the
same soul. The Ford Five Hundred is a decent car, and has ok fit and finish
for an American sedan and is available in AWD. Though, I wouldn't want a
Focus or an Edge. Chrysler actually has, again in my opinion, the best
American sedan right now in the Chrysler 300 / Dodge Charger. The Big Three,
as you can see, has way too short a list. One of the many, many reasons they
are struggling so hard right now.

Turning to Germany we have the obvious in Mercedes-Benz, as well as BMW
sedans, but may not be in the proper price point for a recent vehicle to be
worth consideration. As well as the drop in build quality of all auto
manufacturers due to economic concerns without

Seriously, whats wrong with that? If their believe system is so easy to
break down that a history teacher can destroy it (I think a philosophy

I measured the resistance of the shock absorber (strut) according to
the book. (Push rod in 84mm while on spring scale noting 'weight'
while holding it at this extension. Should read 280+/-30 N when new,
170 N minimum. Also note 'weight' required to push rod in 50mm at a
100mm/minute rate, should be 320 N or 450 N depending on model. The
equivalent pull value should be 740 N or 1150 N.)

Well, it failed, big surprise. I measured about 12# either way I
conducted the push test. At 1 Newton = 0.225 pounds force that's
53N! The pull resistance was more, but the push value is so low that
it's not worth the effort of measuring. Time to order new.
