Re: [MBZ] OT, A water circuit breaker for the home

2008-09-28 Thread harry watkins
It is cool, for example, if you want to water the yard, press the "Bypass"
button and it gives you two hours.

If you are leaving town, press the "Away" button and it will shut off the
water in 30 seconds if it detects flow over a small pre-set amount.

And this is really cool, If you forget to push the "Away" button and it
detects no activity for 18 hours, it will set "Away" for you.

There is a "Disable" button to take it off line.

To turn off all water, press "Bypass" and "Disable" buttons at the same time
and its the same as if you had, found the tool, gone out to the meter valve,
fought the spiders, dug the dirt away and turned it off there.

It is cool

Cool! I actually ran across those valves in my search for new
shut-off valves, since the originals in our house will not turn off
the water. I have to use the meter to turn it off if I want to replace
a bib washer.
I wondered how they could tell the difference between a shower and a
broken pipe. I was trying to imagine flow meters on both sides of
valvfes that would know if they had been opened or not, nothing a
simple as a timer!

After waking up to a broken washer hose in our previouse house, when I

It has saved us one big time when the ice maker tube broke. we came home

water on the kitchen floor and that was all. There have been numerous

a leaking toilet or a faucet inside or outside was left on that caused it
to

One of the main things we like about it is the ability to turn off all
water
to the house with a push of two buttons. If my wife had to turn the
water

off at the meter, or lose an eye, her nick name would be Patch.

Ours has been in service for 12 years, we have it set for 15 minutes
because
there are only two in the house. When company is here I go back to the
30

minute default.

Yes you are Gazza, condition of the wheels, a 10 buck set of ugly bundts

the condition of the set in question but I guess I'll find out once they

Re: [MBZ] '87 300D saga continues

2008-09-28 Thread OK Don
We drove the '87 300D about 300 miles today - IT was idling very rough
when we left, 150 miles later is was purring like a kitten when we
pulled into the drive at our destination. Let it sit for 4 hours while
we went Breezy flying, then headed home - it idled roughly, as before,
when we started it. It had a can of Red Line in the tank on the way
up, added another when we filled it before heading back. We'll see
tomorrow if it's any better.
I did verify a cloud of black smoke behind us for most of first and
second gear at WOT near the end of the trip.
We got 26 MPG at 75 MPH on the first half, haven't filled it after getting back.

Re: [MBZ] fix slipping reverse on my 240D

2008-09-28 Thread Wonko the Sane
Having driven the car about six times now since the fix, I think I am going
to have to "adjust" how I put the car in reverse. Since I bought it, it was
"put in in reverse and wait a moment." Now, it is "put it in reverse and be
ready, because you are going backwards NOW -- if you don't want to leave
now, be touching the brakes."

In other words, I think this B3 adjustment had already backed out some when
I bought the car and has simply gotten worse over the years. Reverse was
never this strong before (during my period of ownership).

Makes me wonder how many other late-70s W123s are limping in reverse when
then don't need to be doing so.

[MBZ] today's 190D adventures

2008-09-28 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Well took the car into town to the car wash. Got it back home, decided
to tackle why it was slow to no shut off. Shut off valve leaking. Pull
air cleaner to get to it better. Its a paint to get to because for some
stupid reason they used torx bolts instead of regular bolts. The back
one is directly under the ADA. I end up getting a torx bit, cutting it
off so it will fit under the ada, and get a pair of vice grips on it.
Get it out, put a good one in I had off a 603 pump, not shutoff. Crap,
pull it back apart, didnt get it hooked on the leaver. I then discover
that the 190D has the little part sticking out on the valve oposite the
603 version. Crap, they are different. Guess Im going to have to order
a new one. In the mean time, still waiting for the gaskets to arrive
from Rusty for the valve body swap on the other 190D. Did pull the
valve body out of the bad tranny that came out of the car. No problem
there. Was tempted to install it without new gasket but though better
of it. Now if I would just get them. Drivers window regulator is bad,
dont have a used one so I will have to order a new one for that too I
guess. Kicking myself for getting rid of that running/driving 190D
parts car I had. Damn.

Re: [MBZ] More 240D fun

2008-09-28 Thread Jim Cathey
My car has an allen head bolt. My problem is that it was the largest
allen socket I had which is only 3/8 drive. With a 1/2" drive socket
I'd have used the impact wrench...

Ah, I misunderstood. The steering wheel itself can stick, so
when you yank hard on it it flies off and whacks you in the face.
That's what leaving the bolt in a few threads prevents.

While breaking the bolt loose initially, you're on your own!

Numbers are right above the #2 injector hole, last numbers with be
something like 14 01 or something like that. That means its a 14 head.
As for the price, yes depending on condition etc.

Trampas wrote:

I know it has been asked before but wanted to know how to check a 300SDL for
#14 head.

I am debating on buying a 300SDL with a replaced engine, they say it was a
new engine but. I would like to make sure it did not have a #14 head.

Also what are 300SDL going for these days? Is $3500 unreasonable for an '86?

Thanks

Re: [MBZ] More 240D fun

2008-09-28 Thread Curt Raymond
Sorry Jim, I've read this a bunch of times and still don't get it...

My car has an allen head bolt. My problem is that it was the largest allen
socket I had which is only 3/8 drive. With a 1/2" drive socket I'd have used
the impact wrench...

You leave the nut/bolt in a few threads worth while you slam
on it to break it loose.  The bolt catches it, then you remove
the bolt all the way and lift the wheel off.

You've now had the lesson on why it's done that way, I bet
you remember!

I took mine out and dipped its cabin end into a jug of ATF and applied
vacuum (hose and duct tape) to the hood end.  Slurp!

Re: [MBZ] 190D ac, update

2008-09-28 Thread Curt Raymond
Good news on the 134, I suspect I'm going to go with it in my 190D in the
spring. Its not hot enough around here to worry about. I've driven the car 3
summers with no ac at all...

The blower switch on my car did the same thing a month ago. I took it apart and
flipped the broken flipper over. I had to cut a notch in it but it works fine
now... Fred gave me a replacement which I'll hold in reserve...

Well, 2 days later, AC is still working GREAT.  Spent a little time
today cleaning the car up, and will try and get to buffing it tomorrow.
The damn blower switch locked up on me so I took it apart to try and
figure it out.  I see it has 3 little rocker things on a shaft that has
a tab, which prevents the rocker things from going too far.  If they
break, it goes too far and the switch gets stuck.  Well thats what
happened.  I just put this switch it also, the other one that was in
there did the same thing.  Dang.  Guess I might have to order a new one.

Re: [MBZ] #14 head

2008-09-28 Thread David Hemsley

Depending upon the overall condition the price is OK. Not good but OK

AVOID the number 14 head. Look on the manifold crossing the engine - near the
area where us old timers would be looking for a carbeurator.

[MBZ] #14 head

2008-09-28 Thread Trampas
I know it has been asked before but wanted to know how to check a 300SDL for
#14 head.

I am debating on buying a 300SDL with a replaced engine, they say it was a
new engine but. I would like to make sure it did not have a #14 head.

Also what are 300SDL going for these days? Is $3500 unreasonable for an '86?

Thanks

Trampas

[MBZ] OT, A water circuit breaker for the home

2008-09-28 Thread harry watkins
I was telling SWMBO (my sole partner in building our metal frame home) how
great this list is. I told her that our grey water lint problem may be
solved thanks to Allan's tip through this list.

She suggested I share some things we built into our house that some of you
may not be aware of and stated we have three or four things she had never
seen or heard of before.

After waking up to a broken washer hose in our previouse house, when I read
about the Flo Logic, I had one on order that night. The price has tripled
since then, but is a better system.

It has saved us one big time when the ice maker tube broke. we came home to
water on the kitchen floor and that was all. There have been numerous times
a leaking toilet or a faucet inside or outside was left on that caused it to
shut off, small things, but handy.

One of the main things we like about it is the ability to turn off all water
to the house with a push of two buttons. If my wife had to turn the water
off at the meter, or lose an eye, her nick name would be Patch.

Ours has been in service for 12 years, we have it set for 15 minutes because
there are only two in the house. When company is here I go back to the 30
minute default.
