Classic symptoms of a tire with cords separating. It's not quite
round anymore...

Balancing won't help.

Oh, and the three butt warmers we've tried so far (didn't sit

Re: [MBZ] Glow Plug Current Problem??

2009-03-30 Thread Jim Cathey
Jim - I measured .5 Ohm with a voltage drop of 2 volts, which means
it's only 4A, not 60A.  Might there be a problem with the relay?

You're measuring different things. And your glow plugs, getting
red hot as they do, don't stay at 0.5 ohms while operating.
That's why the resistance value is nothing more than a rough
guide. If you can measure the current directly that is the
best. And, a normally-operating system won't lose more than
X amount of voltage along the way from the battery to the
plugs. Dunno what X is, but it ought to be 1/2 Volt or
thereabouts.

If you're actually measuring (reliably) 0.5 ohm from the
relay to the glow plug (and not including the glow plug)
you have some seriously bad wire there.

Excess play in the bearings in the guts underneath is often the

When were the valves last adjusted?
   Last week.
Are the fuel filters clean and full of clear fuel?
   Yes, also changed last week
Do you have fuel at the injectors when cranking?
   Confirmed
An air leak in the fuel delivery line will make the engine very hard to start
without a great deal of cranking.

W115/114 post 73 had different front fender that are NOT direct
replacements for the older ones -- grille is wider, there is a skirt
on the bottom to match the "basher bumper" , and they don't attach at
the rear bottom the same way. Don't know what the Euro fenders
looked like, but I'd bet they simply stayed with the eariler type and
don't interchange.

Bumper support may or may not be the same -- certainly the post 73
cars have a four bolt attachment plate for the shock absorbers that
are not present on the pre-73 cars. I seem to remember a single bolt
in a bracket, but as I said, I'd have to crawl under my old 220 and

Re: [MBZ] Front end shake, tires/alignment/?

2009-03-30 Thread Peter Frederick
Get new tires -- likely you have a belt separating, and while the
shop certainly should have noticed it, sometimes the tread won't show
enough strange wear and doesn't "snake" enough when turned by hand to
be obvious.

Static balancing won't fix this, as the balance of the tire is
changing with increasing rotational speed. A dynamic balance would,
but I've not seen a real on the car dynamic balancer in ages.

Also have them check for a loose wheel bearing or bad shock. The
latter usually causes serious cupping pretty fast, though.

Peter

Half OT: SWMBO's Subaru, usually trouble-free, suddenly developed a

This starts around 60-65 mph, and also shows up a bit when braking at
slightly lower speeds. I looked underneath for any obvious damage to
wheels, tires, and suspension components. Nothing looked out of the
ordinary.

We took the car to Friendly Local Tire/Brake/Suspension Shop, which
charged $50 to balance all four wheels, and said that would help
things, but also noted that one rear wheel was bent. I drove the car
on the highway a few days later, and the symptoms weren't improved at
all. If anything the shake is worse.

I can't see any damage whatsoever to any of the wheels from either
outside or underneath, although I haven't taken them off the car to
see them better. When I've had a bent wheel before on other cars that
was bad enough to affect handling, it's been obvious to the eye
(either a visible flat spot in the rim, or less often a sort of warp
such that the wheel wobbles visibly off the axis when the car is on a
lift and the wheel is rotated by hand, like an out-of-true bicycle
wheel).

Even if a rear wheel really was bent, could that really cause such a
bad vibration in the *front* end that you could feel it through the
steering wheel? Isn't the standard test whether handling problems are
wheel/tire related to rotate the tires front to back, precisely
*because* an out-of-balance wheel or whatever is felt less when in the
rear?

I'm planning to go back to the tire shop and ask them to either give
me back my $50 or do something to earn it. I'm thinking that they
either couldn't or didn't balance the wheels properly, or couldn't
diagnose the problem beyond that, and blamed (or just made up) the
bent wheel as a cover. Any thoughts?

I think he is referring to the agitator. The impeller is in the
water pump, but clothes should not get into the impeller. (although
that happens, usually with a lightweight sock.) I agree. and extra
washer or shim will most likely fix excess play in the agitator shaft.

[MBZ] Front end shake, tires/alignment/?

2009-03-30 Thread Alex Chamberlain
Half OT: SWMBO's Subaru, usually trouble-free, suddenly developed a
nasty shake, not just palpable but visible in the steering wheel.

2009-03-30 Thread Jim Cathey

Local CL has a 1990 560SEL for $2195, looks just like our SDL
but shinier and probably not wrecked several times,

Ah, the eternal holy grail of the cheap 126 that stays cheap after you
buy it. Never gonna happen. Resist the siren's sweet call!

The temptation has been removed. Largely by parking it in
my driveway. Looks good, has heated seats, reclining rear, etc.
Needs some TLC, but nothing too bad. Is leaking oil out the SLS
pump, and somewhere else that it can be burned off of a hot bit.
Also won't upshift if you're into the throttle heavily. Otherwise
drove well. AC probably non-functional.

http://userweb.windwireless.net/~jimc/SEL.html

The thought was that this might be a quicker way to get Jill back
into a large 126 than fixing up the SDL. (Which I still intend to do.)
And/or making one ideal car out of two, if things need to go that way.
(There would be State issues, though.)

If I seem to disappear, it IS foul play. My body will be easy to
find, in the trunk of this car and pushed/buried in our woods somewhere.

OTOH it's a white stretch 126, maybe Jill will think it's the SDL
and won't notice. She tends to put gasoline in the things anyway...

Re: [MBZ] Glow Plug Current Problem??

2009-03-30 Thread Jim Cathey
Yesterday I checked the voltage at the GPs.  At the relay, the voltage
was 12 volts, but at the GPs, it was 10 volts!  Is a 2 volt drop
across the GP wire bundle normal?? The GP wires all approx.1/2 Ohm
resistance.  What should it be?  Could the current be low from the
relay (thinking V = IR) ?

You sure you saw 12V at the relay with the system glowing?
A 2V drop is a bit excessive, otherwise. The usual diag
trick is to put the + of the meter on the battery +, then
probe successively downstream looking for a voltage jump
on the way to the plugs. Something like 1/2V is more
like normal, you're only drawing something like 60A (and
yes, Ohm's law applies) while glowing.

speedometer. How would I ADVANCE the miles on the instrument to bring
the

odometer (currently reading 234,000 miles) up to 320,000?

You can push the shaft (partially) out of the odometer and then put
it back together with the gears rotated. Not for the faint of heart,
but entirely do-able.

BTW, in 1970, I built a vacuum system for IBM in Research Triangle Park, NC,
using this principle. The electric motor-operated vacuum system that I used
originally burned out the motor brushes in 2 weeks. Meanwhile, they were
dumping much excess compressed air overboard/outside. I quickly adapted
only a small portion of their excess compressed air though a venturi to
provide appropriate pickup vacuum at 10 punch machines that punched little
holes in circuit cards. The vacuum system I built had no additional moving
parts and collected the little pieces punched and trimmed from the cards.
My system "ran" 24/7.

Re: [MBZ] Another weird W123 speedo question

2009-03-30 Thread Loren Faeth
You can take a chunk of broken speedo cable and a reversible electric
drill. secure the speedo, put the square end in the speedo cable in
the speedo, then chuck the round end in the drill. I think you go
forward to advance the miles. Then you need to secure the
drill. It must be an industrial grade drill. turn the drill on and
check to see it is going in the right direction. You will see a mile
or two click up in 10-20 minutes. Once you are sure it is going the
right direction, go about your normal activities. Check daily for
progress. I think it will take 3-7 days to get the miles you
want. It might take a month. you might wear out a drill or two
first. Seriously...

I took 1000 miles of an odo once for tire warranty. I let the drill
run overnight.

The only good way to do this is either to try taking it apart
yourself, or sending it into a speedo shop.

A lot simpler and cheaper to make an odo change sheet that documents
the mileage change and keep a record in your file and a copy in the glove box.

At 06:27 PM 3/30/2009, you wrote:

1) Install in vehicle, adjust speedometer as appropriate.
2) Drive 86000 miles.

Alternatively, I'll bet you could get a conveniently-sized drill
bit, set it up in a bench vise, and spin where the cable goes, if
it's non-electric. Maybe insert a sacrificial plastic ring (pencil
eraser?) to make sure you don't mar the plug. I've never tried it
and probably never will, but that's my idea for the day. :)

Not having dismantled a Benz speedometer, might it be possible to
just replace the odometer with the old one?

I think he's trying to say "whole wheat flour from white wheat

Most hard wheat (high gluten) is red. But it is possible to find
hard white wheat.

High gluten flour makes better yeast breads. Low gluten does
fine in quick breads.

I bought a Bosch at Lowes a couple years ago. Works great, although
it suffers from the "stagnant water" syndrome. Wash whites as the
first load with bleach takes care of that, else you tend to get
clothes that smell like they've been in the washer for a couple days
before you dried them.

Uses MUCH less water. Takes longer though, the regular cycle is 60
min. Occasionally won't spin a very small load dry because it won't
balance (hint: it hold a huge amount of laundry, don't wash two
towels by themselves)

Re: [MBZ] OT, front loading washers

2009-03-30 Thread Peter Frederick
I bought a Bosch at Lowes a couple years ago. Works great, although
it suffers from the "stagnant water" syndrome. Wash whites as the
first load with bleach takes care of that, else you tend to get
clothes that smell like they've been in the washer for a couple days
before you dried them.

Uses MUCH less water. Takes longer though, the regular cycle is 60
min. Occasionally won't spin a very small load dry because it won't
balance (hint: it hold a huge amount of laundry, don't wash two
towels by themselves)

[MBZ] OT: the end of an era

2009-03-30 Thread Curt Raymond
Today I take out of service the last machine I'm supporting with a floppy drive.

It was a Win2k box, 700Mhz that has run my wife's office for 2 years. The hard
drive dumped out leaving it in a reboot/bluescreen cycle. I managed to get all
or nearly all the data off of it but not to save the OS.

The replacement is a WinXP box, 2.4Ghz of spare parts from the basement...

Re: [MBZ] OT, front loading washers

2009-03-30 Thread Tim C
This is the market the Staber fills in modern washing machines. We got one
cheap on ebay, and are really happy with it. It does leak if you put too much
detergent (takes .5-1oz of the low-sud stuff) and the belt will jump off every
now and again, but Staber doesn't rip you off on parts when you order from
them, nor do they care if you open it up without special factory training.
Takes all of 5 minutes to gain access to every part on the machine. Factory
shop manuals for all components are free on staber.com.

Our Staber is currently offline due to a stuck motor brush, and I haven't made
it to a motor shop to get a new one. I will take Mitch's advice and check
McMaster-Carr... (I can order a new motor from Staber, but I figure I have to
exhaust the brush route first. :)

Running, yes, a 30yo Maytag in its absence, which I conveniently paralleled
into the plumbing when installing the Staber.

Staber has about 2/3 the capacity of the "extra large" Maytag, we do one load
per day (2 kids 2 adults) in either washer. I can get away with skipping a day
or two a week on the Maytag, on the Staber I have to run extras if I miss one.
The Staber did a better job getting water out; the dryer often runs 1.5-2
cycles on a Staber-sized Maytag load, and never ran a full cycle on a Staber
load.

All told it is a nice machine, since we got ours used I can't say how warranty
support is but in the aftermarket legacy support is surprisingly good. I made
no bones about my ebay buy and the support folks have always been willing to
talk to me on the phone anyway, and seem to really like the product.

Best,
-Tim

My gosh, the "old reliable" maytag top loading machine is the 123
240D 4 spd of washing machines. solid, and dependable and so simple
you can fix anything yourself. Nothing on the market now is built so
well. You don't even have to take anything apart to change the
belt. Just tip the machine up to get to it.

I bought a set about the time they brought out their "neptune"
line (12-14 yrs ago?) The bearings went out on the dryer motor a
year ago, but other than that, they are good as new. Cost me $100
for a new motor.

When were the valves last adjusted?
Are the fuel filters clean and full of clear fuel?
Do you have fuel at the injectors when cranking?
An air leak in the fuel delivery line will make the engine very hard

How many miles on the engine? Not to be all gloom and doom, but I had a

You probably have a torn boot on one of your rear axle shafts, which it
turn causes the joint to go bad. The noise will come and go for a while
till it finally comes for good. Just get a good used one and be done
with it.

ernest breakfield wrote:

hi gang!

   time for an invitation to play one of our least favorite games;
diagnosis of an intermittent noise via the internet. ;-*

the suspect: Helga; an '85 300D California car, with just over 170K
miles on it that i've had for the last 50K+ miles.

scenario: trunk moderately full of Christmas goodies and luggage,
cruising I5 at around 70+MPH on a trip downstate last week. about 3-4
hours out i started hearing a rhythmic noise that sounded at first like
a tire thumping, but there was no associated vibration to be felt. this
noise gradually became progressively louder; enough that i pulled off to
see if there might be something stuck under the car flapping, or
anything else visibly out of sorts, but peeping and grabbing and shaking
things didn't turn up any likely culprits. after crawling around under
the car for a bit and sitting on the side of the road, i decided to move
the normally dependable beast to a better location, and lo! no noise
whatsoever. we decided to see how close to our destination we could get
and proceeded, only to not have the noise show back up in the next
hour-plus; just enough time to get us over the Grapevine before dark.
to make a long story short, this scenario repeated itself with varied
frequency throughout the next several hundred miles; sometimes without
any noises for hours, and other times coming back in as little as 40
miles. sometimes once the noise starts it sounds like a u-joint
click-clunking as the vehicle comes to a slow, and other times it makes
almost no noise at all while coming down to a stop.
once the noise shows up it may or may not worsen under load, and may
or may not worsen with speed. sometimes it goes away immediately as soon
as the vehicle comes to a stop, and other times it seems to need to sit
for a while. we ended up making a practice of finding many excuses to
stop on the premise of giving our dog more places to sniff, and that
seemed to keep the noise at bay somewhat.

final note of concern was while driving a short errand around town
last night, a sharp "Clank!" was heard followed immediately by something
that sounded for all the world like a bolt falling out of place; yet
nothing has been found to appear out of place yet by crawling around
under the car. note of concern to me, this was the first time there have
been serious noises that weren't rhythmic, and this showed up while the
car had just started doing errands at sub-35 MPH.

my impression is that this is something related to the driveline
based on the rhythm, but i'm not sure what i might need to look for.
driveline doesn't seem to have any undue play when twisted by hand,
there aren't any tears on the axle boots, and there doesn't seem to be
anything out of the ordinary underneath.

i *hate* intermittent problems. i also hate problems that i can't
repeat with the vehicle at rest, making it impossible to accurately
determine where the noise(s) come from.

any hints, tips, or clues as to what i might look for before i have
to just start addressing the problem shotgunning-style by just replacing
everything that moves down there?

cheers!

ask them what the deal is with the car. If you want to send me your

I think he's trying to say "whole wheat flour from white wheat
rather than red wheat". Most white wheat is soft (low gluten).
Most hard wheat (high gluten) is red. But it is possible to find
hard white wheat.

High gluten flour makes better yeast breads. Low gluten does
fine in quick breads.

My favorite yeast bread is made with the flour from hard white
wheat.

Take what you can with a sample size of 1 but we've had a Frigidaire from
Lowes for just over three years now. Only issue has been an occasional
slight dribble from the front door w/really full load, which appears to be
nearly universal for these puppies.
I have a whirlpool duet (rather pricey) but have had 2 years and it is great!
They do a better job on cleaning, supposedly cleans better and is easier on the
materials (does not beat them up as much). I have not had a single repair. My
uncle used to work for montgomery ward and his opinion was that Whirlpool made
the best washers. cks
I got the extended warranty b/c of the history of these being problems in
the past and relatively new tech for the US manufacturers building them.
Washer has paid for itself with reduced hot/warm water consumption, reduced
demand from our well is a bonus. Much easier on clothes but these do retain
some water and you'll likely get mold at some point esp. if the door is kept
shut.

Yeah there were some there /i think. I took some pics with my phone

Our Maytag front loader likes to travel around the basement and eventually
shook itself off its pedestal, stripping some bolts in the process. We plan

If you are considering a Staber be aware that the load capacity is
significantly less that most other horizontal/front-loader machines. That's a
big reason I didn't get one; family of 5 and we're doing at least 2 loads a

I have an LG. Not the top-of-the-line with the steam cycle, a step or two
below/cheaper than that one. It's nice, but it will leak if you get too much
suds in it. You have to use low suds/high efficiency formulated detergent.

[MBZ] top loading washer

2009-03-30 Thread tom tomscat

Hi Kaleb,

We recently downsized to a smaller house. Among other priorities, we wanted to
bring the laundry up to the first floor from the basement. So I converted our
pantry into a pantry/laundry, installed the plumbing and electrics, and we
purchased new, full-size stackable machines to save space: Whirlpool Duet
front loading washer and dryer . The machines are quiet, energy efficient, and
do a great job. She loves the machines... and I have had no problems and no
complaints. (Our previous machine, a Kenmore purchased in 1979, stayed with
the old house, and was still running fine, btw.)

I agree with Barry's comments below re: water use and energy efficiency. I
also agree that there seems to be a general consensus among the repairmen that
Maytag is not the Gold Standard it once was. Some of their products were
apparently made by Samsung. Whirlpool has bought them out, along with a few
other manufacturers.

Thinking about replacing my 10 year old top loading Maytag. Anybody
have one of these front loaders, or have shopped for them? Best brand
to look at? Ones to stay away from. Was looking at those Frigidairs
but they seem kind of flimsy. Wondered about LG and samsung as compared
to say, a Maytag which I am used to. I know Maytag has always been the
best in the past.
