[MBZ] O/T PTO Electric/MAgnetic Clutch

2009-09-11 Thread Peter T. Arnold
The Electo-Magnetic clutch on my Husqvarna tractor is acting up. It
will engage once when cold and run fine for about an hour (As long as it
takes to cut my lawn).

If I disengage when hot, it will not reengage.
It's probably FUBAR. Cost it about $150, Rusty doesn't sell them ;-(

Does this learned group have any feedback?

2009-09-11 Thread LarryT

Hi Don,
How did the brake shoes look? I'd read that since they are only used
when the car is stationary (hopefully) they tend to last a very long time -

I'm curious because my '91 300D has too much emergency brake travel that
needs to be adjusting. Hopefully it's not the shoes.

Subject: [MBZ] 124 parking brakes and drive shaft

I took the day off - to get ready for the holiday weekend ;-) and decided
it was time to install the new parking brake shoes on the '92 300D 2.5T.
One shot of PB Blaster was required on each side to get the disk off of
the

hub, then it was the usual fun with brake springs time. Being behind the
hub, and small than the usual brake spring tool can handle made it a bit
more interesting, though once I got one side done, the other side was much
easier. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the kit from Rusty
included new bolts for mounting the calipers!

I also discovered while under the car that the front flex disk has a 1/4
of

play, with the steel inserts moving laterally as I turned the drive shaft,
and the center bearing support rubber is torn in several places. I'm
guessing that one or both of these conditions are causing the occasional
rapid hammering noise that I hear/feel sometimes during acceleration or
cornering. The order placed with Rusty shouild result in another weekend
of

dirt in my eyes (need to remember to wear goggles BEFORE I slide under the
car).

Excellent info, fact-based decision making is the way to go. In my
opinion, used car prices are still depressed, so I don't think this
C-F-C program had much of an impact at all on the used car market.
Sure, some useful running cars were destroyed, and I think this was a
form of corporate welfare and government market meddling, which I oppose
in general, but I think that the objective of the program was largely
met and the biggest problem is the dealers who haven't been paid yet.

20+ years ago a similar idea was floated to the CARB (CA Air Resources
Board) that they would get more bang for their buck with a similar
program in CA to reduce vehicle emissions, but they never took action on
it. The idea was to offer a government voucher for trading in older
cars that didn't have catalytic converters and/or other pollution
controls, and then destroy the older cars. The math worked out
beautifully but the CARB seemed to be more interested in other political
objectives instead of achieving concrete results.

There were about 0.7 million vehicles destroyed under the program, out
of about 250 million vehicles on the road in the USA- so on average one
out of about 350 used vehicles were scrapped. I am no fan of the
program, but I don't think it lasted long enough to have a huge impact
on the used car market. I hope they don't restart the program, however
as I think the economic and environmental benefits of it were dubious.

Tim,

Thanks for the list, that is a keeper.

Rich and I checked out the '79 SL yesterday, total rust bucket with rotted and
moldy interior, no radio, didn't establish anything beyond that. Owner never
showed up with the keys, so we went to lunch.

There was a '72 that went for $4500 or somesuch last fall that I really regret
missing. I really like the bumpers and headlights on the '72 model much better
than the later stuff, and that year had the most power of all the SLs in the
70's and I think into the 80's.

There's a $1500 '82 380SL on the Charlotte CL (Lincolnton NC), looks nice but
the fellow replaced the EFI with a carb. There was a $1K '76 450SL in
Salisbury with modest rust and a good engine. Took forever for the guy to get
rid of that one, not sure if he sold it or got tired of listing it, I posted on
it a month or two ago. There's currently a $500 '72 450SL in King. Parts car,
would be a total rebuild. There's a $2K '81 280SL in Chapel Hill, manual I
think, that runs; that one made it onto my personal short list. There's a
fellow in Mount Holly that wants to (partial?) trade an MB diesel for his
running '76 450SL, asking $3200 otherwise; that one is on my list too. Which
reminds me I need to get back to him...

Oddly, none of these cars is more than a couple hours from me, but the locals
on the Raleigh CL want 3-5 times as much, except the $2.5K engine needs work
jumped time 380 out in BFE. Crazy. Anyway, that to say they seem to be
crawling out of the woodwork this fall, IMO a pretty strong buyer's market.
You just have to convince the seller of it. :)

By way of checklists, I liked the following link for brevity:
http://web.archive.org/web/20050920084427/http://hometown.aol.com/dquinn5735/buylist.html

There are others but this one, along with the model year differences from Jim
Cathey's old post (mail-archive.com), was the most immediately useful to me.

Best,

Not accessible when hot, buried under mower. I guess I can remove it, measure

dragging when released.

Maybe Kalib would give me $50 for the mower?

Re: [MBZ] Parts exchange

2009-09-11 Thread LarryT
If you want a easy to access place to list used parts, Yahoo Groups is
pretty easy to set up - I can create a group for OkieBenz if needed - the
only downside is people need to subscribe to a Group before gaining full
access but the groups offer lots of flexibility in what can be posted. A
folder for parts available would be super easy - if you see something you
want, just email the owner and make a deal. Then the owner removes the sold
part from the group folder and that takes care of maintenance.

It would also be available for non-okie members to join also so you may
end up with a larger audience for selling parts.

Let me know if you want me to create a Yahoo Group for a parts sales
tool. Someone would need to monitor things to make sure it stays accurate
and doesn't get hit with spam - I can monitor who joins the group is you
wish -

You can always post what you have for sale to the list. As for a message
board sort or deal, that would be great as well, and can be added to
Okiebenz. I wonder if my couple of free labor web guys might know how to
do that, or anybody else for that matter.

Fleabay is worthless

Nobody looks at ioffer and other would-be fleabay competitors

There is a lot of talent on the list.

Others on the list surely have the same type of stuff laying around.

And then there is Kaleb.

Here is my proposal:

We need a free place to list new and used parts for sale, open to anyone
to buy, but only for list members (or ?) to sell
Pay by paypal. It is simple (yeah, I know, it is fleabay, but it is
simple and it works)

If it gets really successful, we could also add an auction format, so
that when getting rid of something is more important than price, we could
list it and let the fun begin.

Anybody interested?

Anybody willing to work on the website?
I could host it, or perhaps Kaleb might want to, or someone else can.

I'm trying to fix the Becker Europa in the 74 240D.  I see a standard car radio

Is this the case?

A vehicle at 15 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 800 gallons a year of gasoline.
A vehicle at 25 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 480 gallons a year.

So, the average clunker transaction will reduce US gasoline
consumption by 320 gallons per year.

They claim 700,000 vehicles so that is 224 million gallons/year.
That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil.

5 million barrels of oil is about 1/4 of one day's US consumption.

And, 5 million barrels of oil costs about $350 million dollars at $75/bbl.

So, tax payers contributed $3 billion to save $350 million.
And 80% of the auto profits went to foreign countries.

Re: [MBZ] 124 parking brakes and drive shaft

2009-09-11 Thread OK Don
One was worn down to the metal backing, all of them were severly cracked.
I'm guessing that the car was driven with them one at some time in it's
past. There are adjustments both at the shoes, like any other drum brake
system, and at the cable Y junction - I left the shoe adjusters collapsed
all the way in , and made a minor adjustment at the Y to get 4 clicks of the
pedal to activate the brakes.

 Hi Don,
How did the brake shoes look? I'd read that since they are only used
when the car is stationary (hopefully) they tend to last a very long time -

I'm curious because my '91 300D has too much emergency brake travel that
needs to be adjusting. Hopefully it's not the shoes.

Not only that, but with the new car and better mpg, the owner will

be even less.

the troubling position of either selling the junk you people absolutely and
unequivocally insist on despite our personal beliefs or simply closing up
shop and finding another livelihood.

it's not too late for y'all to repent your evil ways and prevent the total
annihilation of quality. not that i'm really hopeful that any of you will,
but it's really not too late.

That's the statutory language here in Michigan, but persecutors and law

tell you he was in a marked car, so laws don't apply to him.

I personally know a state police lieutenant (former state highway trooper) who
jumped all over a trooper for pulling him over when he was doing 95 in a 70 zone
in a state motor pool car (not even an unmarked squad). If I were the trooper
that he mistreated, I would have arrested him for reckless driving and refused

[MBZ] Huzza! Huzza! Huzza!

2009-09-11 Thread Redghost

Three hearty cheers for Chris McCann!

Sent Gump's injectors his way and in a few weeks he had them back to
me looking SWEET! He set pop pressure within 50psi of each other, all
in the 1525-1550 range.

Spent today installing the injectors and delivering SWMBA to work
after she dropped the E300D off for brake service. Gump heads off for
a front end Tuesday, so I have to have her running.

Put the anti seize on each pretty injector and carefully spun them
home. Then popped the torque wrench to just right. I had cleaned up
the metal lines while they were off and got them on with some fudging
around because the clamp was loose and angles were wonky. Put fuel
lines back on, tighten up the caps on the tops and pumped fuel
through. No leaks. Put the key in and glow, then crank. No light
off because the battery was out of service for two months.

Put the charger on and go make some rain barrels out of garbage cans.
Doing my day of service as requested by our enlightened president.

Once the battery was ready, hopped in and cranked her until she lit.
Injector one is spilling copious amounts of fuel. Shut off and
scratch head. Figured out why you may as well just use all new
lines. Had broken two of the lines on removal, so had cut some new,
but line at #1 was shot and leaking. Fresh line, no leaking there and
light up again.

Huffing noise and smoke from the injector area, but no visible wet or
bubble that I can see. Get the claw foot out and snug up the end of
the hard lines all over. Still huffing and puffing. Close the hood
and take her around the block a few times to seat everything, just in
case. Get back and pop the hood. Still huffing and puffing. Lean
over for better look, hand on the dip stick, which snicks into place,
no more huffing.

Hard to tell right off if this has reduced the massive smoke out the
back. Will have to do more cold starts. The smoke is now more grey
than black or blue at cold idle. Have not gotten her good and hot to
see if that reduces smoking. Might need to redo the rings.

That is a job for another year. Will have to drive Gump for another
five years. In that time will redo the head, get her painted, replace
the leaking engine seal between crank and transmission, replace
cracked windscreen and get all new window seals.

got this info from a friend...

A vehicle at 15 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 800 gallons a year of
gasoline.

And 80% of the auto profits went to foreign countries.

just the facts (as they were passed on to me...)
- does anyone in leadership do the math before they make decisions?

I'm trying to fix the Becker Europa in the 74 240D.  I see a standard
car radio antenna jack, but the FM works so poorly that I wonder if
there is a separate jack for a FM antenna.

No. Probably something wrong with it, I doubt the design
is as bad as all that.
