It took less than one hour.

Honest. *smiles*

The rest of the story is:
The shaft on the wagon was making an oily mess so I knew it
needed replacement. I went out to my collection of parts cars
and pulled both shafts from one of them. One looked okay, the
other not so good. I put the "looks okay" on the wagon.

When I got back from the 1/2 mile (1 km) test drive it was
leaking. *sigh*

A day or two later, I went to a different parts car and pulled
both shafts from it. I then noted the time and began the swap on
(again) on the wagon. About 53 minutes later the car was back on
the ground and done.

So this was the second time on the wagon, and the 6 axle shaft I
had handled, and the 4th time through the process all within a
couple days.

And I have a concrete floored garage, a couple hydraulic jacks,
and a creeper. And since I had just done it, I knew where all
the tools were!

Re: [MBZ] Fuel Tank Cleaning

2010-01-19 Thread Dieselhead
The subject of this thread is a /8. These and earlier cars had the
tank under the trunk. in these, you put the head of the bolt into
the allen socket on the plug. Then put a wrench on the top nut to
unscrew the plug and screen, after you have used 2 wrenches to jam
the two nuts together. If you weld the nuts, you can use a socket on
the bottom nut. Then you have a GenUwine merSAYdees tool.

I have also used the channel lock method, and the chisel method. The
bolt method is the more elegant choice.

For 123 and later chassis, with the tank behind the seat, this method
does not work, as you observed. Those screens are accessed with a
big socket., and yes, the axle is always inthe way. A real pain
compared to the 110/115 cars. and 110/111/112/114/108/109 gassers

Re: [MBZ] Fuel Tank Cleaning

2010-01-19 Thread Dieselhead
The drain and screen are in the middle of the bottom of the tank. It
takes a large allen wrench. 23 or 24 mm. I have used a bolt with a
15/16" head with double nuts or double nuts welded on to remove
these. I think the size is 5/8" bolt. Fuel gauge sender is accessed
in the center of the trunk, under an access panel

Hi All,

I recently purchased a very nice 74 240D and put a good motor in it.
It runs sweet, but then dies of fuel starvation. Discovered that
the tank is filled with old biodiesel that has the color, texture,
and clarity of carrot juice. I have to stop and blow out the tank
screen every 5 minutes to get it to run.

What is the most expeditious way of cleaning out the tank? I
flushed it once through the outlet lines but it is still filled with
gunk. Is there an inspection hatch I could use, or should I remove
the tank and manually shake and swirl it?

TIA

Bruce

Chances are very good. The belt lock function has nothing
to do with the squib tensioner. I can get the belts to lock

aggressive braking. If the squib has fired, I don't think
they work right anymore. I think it's obvious, in other

No, you do not want one where the squib has fired. But

I've been told by mechanics at an import indy shop with a lot of
Toyota experience that you can easily tell by pulling a valve
cover---these are OHC engines, so the camshaft is right there: if it's
covered with black tarry stuff, you have sludge; if not, not. I guess
a distant second-best would be to peek in the oil fill hole with a
strong light.

Regarding the Highlander vs. the Grand Cherokee, they are very
different vehicles. The Grand Cherokee is a lot more capable
off-road, but it drives like a truck. The Highlander drives like a
Camry station wagon with a little more ground clearance, which is what
it is. ;)

Another trick that I've heard about but never witnessed is called
'pressing up' the tank, whereby you fill it with water so that the fuel
is pressed up to the top of the tank, and then you weld so that the
water gets heated and not the fuel. How do you keep the water leaking
out of the break from mucking up your welding? I don't know...

Fuel tank welding is rather tricky. I've done it. The secret
ingredient is a lawnmower putting away filling the tank with non-oxygen,
and keeping it that way.

I don't really recommend it.

You would hope so, but I'm quite sure I've read (maybe on VW diesel
message boards) that the engine doesn't like it. I think the
explanation was that the design didn't allow for adequate coolant
circulation in the long, narrow inline-six block and head, and head
warpage and head gasket blowouts were therefore common. Steady
high-speed runnign is not a problem, but the constant
heat-up/cool-down cycles of stop-and-go driving encourages hot spots
in the head.

Pressing up == blowing up!

Well, with water backing the weld location you'd probably never get
enough heat into there to actually weld metal, or even bring fuel
vapors to ignition. (There is such a thing as underwater welding,
but I don't think it's for the common man!)

So that means if it doesn't explode it's still ok to use, right?

Chances are very good. The belt lock function has nothing
to do with the squib tensioner. I can get the belts to lock
just by pulling to quickly on them. They'll lock during
aggressive braking. If the squib has fired, I don't think
they work right anymore. I think it's obvious, in other
words.

No, you do not want one where the squib has fired. But

Turned out the use of B99 had eaten the rubber fuel filler seal and
the cap. When driving the car, it allowed the fuel to slosh out and
then drip back down the filler into the trunk. Bypassed the excess
fuel escape hole, because the cap kept it in the loop.

Re: [MBZ] Fuel Tank Cleaning

2010-01-19 Thread Rich Thomas
There is (most likely -- I just did this on a 126) a fuel tank strainer
at the bottom where the fuel line attaches, it is probably gunked up.
(that is not what you mean by tank screen is it? I can't imagine doing
that every 5 min) Drain the tank as much as you can, then take it out
and either clean it or put in another one (cheap enough) with the
o-ring. While it is out you could probably do some cleaning from top or
bottom or bothj so the crap will drain out.

[MBZ] Fuel Tank Cleaning

Re: [MBZ] OT oscope

2010-01-19 Thread Rich Thomas
It's the thing that you use to measure something -- a little metal probe
you stick on a circuit or component, the other end plugs into the
scope. They have to be made properly with impedance and capacitance and
such to allow for frequency measurement and not to alter the circuit
much while you are doing the measurement. I found a writeup on how to
bodge one up, but they are cheap enough to buy so I will get a couple.

I am excited, I have wanted a scope for a long time, this one is nice!

So I bought the Tek 2445 for $100, it turned on, showed some stuff on
the screen so I guess it is working. The kid said his brother used it,
left it at his house in the closet some time ago, so he was unloading
it. Seems like a good price, ebay has them for $400 give or take so I
guess it was a decent deal. I'll order some probes

and see if I can get dangerous.

I found a great lab handout from MIT 6.002 - Circuits and Electronics
lab, tells how to use the thing to do all kinds of stuff. I guess I am
almost in bidness with a new toy!

What is the purpose of the probe? Does it protect the scope in the event that
you put the probe in somewhere hotter

Fuel tank welding is rather tricky. I've done it. The secret

Re: [MBZ] Axle shaft replacement - was: Frankenheap weldery

2010-01-19 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
That is an excellent write-up - agree completely regarding the diff.
mount bolts. When I did it, I found that removing a rubber cover for an
access hole allowed me to move the threaded plate that the diff. bolts
goz-into so that I could avoid cross threading and make sure the bolts
were really going into the threads. This plate is behind the body sheet
metal.

Also, I learned the hard way that you must replace the big washer at the
wheel bolt ('85 123 wagon), it truly is a single-use item. The cir-clip
inside the diff, however, can be re-used.

You don't mention the car, but a bit of digging suggests that you have a
W123.

Last time I replaced an axle shaft (on a wagon) it took me less than an
hour from putting the jack under the car to the car back on the ground.
I've done it a few (too many) times.
And I had just done it (the replacement axle shaft immediately began
leaking) so all the bolts were clean and greased.

Here's my procedure

 * Jack up the car enough to get under to drain the
differential oil. It's a Good Idea (TM) to make sure the
fill plug can be opened before you drain. The higher the
back of the car is jacked up, the less oil will drain out,
so I only jack up the car enough to get to the fill and
   drain plugs.

 * While the oil is draining:

- take off the wheel(s)

- take off the brake caliper. Yes, it really does need to
come off. I have tried many tricks to avoid it and
always had to take it off. Don't let the caliper hang
by the hose, and try not to twist/stress the hose more
  than necessary.

- remove the bolt that keeps the axle shaft in the wheel
hub and push on the axle shaft to make sure it's loose
in the hub. I have never used a tool like the manual
shows. Occasionally I have had to tap the shaft out,
but it's never been more than just a bit stiff.

 * Once the oil is fully drained, jack up the back of the car
to working height. I like to have the lower shock mount
about 10-12 inches (25-30 cm) off the floor. I get it this
high just to make it easier for me to work under there -
none of the parts install/removal process need the car that
   high.

 * Put a jack under the front of the differential (after this
called the "differential jack") and remove the four bolts
that hold the differential mount to the frame.

 * Remove the differential back cover. Lower the differential
a bit with the differential jack will make getting to the
top bolts much easier. This part is especially tricky on a
wagon because the fuel tank and the suspension control
valve conspire to get in the way. Lowering the

2010-01-19 Thread Curt Raymond
BTW both Polaris and OMC made rotary snowmobiles also. Polaris used the same
303 and the nearly mythical 606 dual rotor. OMC I think manufactured their own
engines and sold them under the Johnson line. OMC also sold Evinrude sleds but
I don't think those got the rotary. The 303 made something like 19hp, its
replacement the 295 was something like 24hp. The OMC sleds had the option of
either a 35 or 45hp (they didn't list sizes) engine but the sleds were big
heavy monsters...

He said the car was hit hard, so forces were exerted on the belts to keep
the passengers in their seats. If I were you Larry, I'd spring for a new
belt. Belts are such a major part of the cars safety systems, not worth
trying to save a few bucks in this area. Used fenders and trim bits are
fine, but used belts are kinda like buying used rotors, just not worth the

Well now that the entire trunk floor is out I have a nice view

I figure it needs a new shaft. This job
should be made much easier now that I can access the axleshaft
from top and bottom! But is this job easy? What is involved? I
read the BBB but it isn't that straightforward.

You don't mention the car, but a bit of digging suggests that
you have a W123.

Last time I replaced an axle shaft (on a wagon) it took me
less than an hour from putting the jack under the car to the
car back on the ground. I've done it a few (too many) times.
And I had just done it (the replacement axle shaft immediately
began leaking) so all the bolts were clean and greased.

Lowering the
differential changes "impossible" to merely "challenging".
The shape of the lip on the differential housing means
little or no oil will run out when the differential cover
  is removed.

* Pull the retainer clip from the axle shaft. I have a piece
of steel wire with the end bent about 95 degrees. The bent
end fits into the hole in the retainer clip. I grip the
other end of the wire with vise grips and pull to remove
  the retainer clip.

* With the differential jack, jack the differential up as
high as it will go. This should mean it runs into the car
body and is just a bit higher than it's normal position.

* Pull/push the axle shaft out of the wheel hub, slide it
past the hub toward the back of the car, and once that end
is free, pull the other end of the axle shaft out of the
  differential.

Reassembly is pretty much the reverse.

* First, clean the splines in the wheel hub and if necessary,
on the replacement axle shaft. I lightly grease the axle
shaft splines to retard corrosion and make it all slide
  together more easily.

* Put the differential end of the axle shaft into the
  differential.

* Put the wheel end of the axle shaft into the wheel hub.

* With the differential jack lower the differential.

* Put the axle shaft retainer clip on in the differential.
Put the wheel hub retainer bolt in and snug it.

* Put the differential cover on and tighten the bolts to
  spec.

* Using the differential jack, lift the differential so the
differential mount bolts can be put back in. Tighten to
  spec.

* Tighten the axle shaft wheel hub bolt to spec.

* Put the brake caliper back on.

* Put the wheel on.

* Put Mobil 1 differential fluid in the differential.

* Remove the differential jack.

* Lower the car to the ground.

Things not specifically mentioned, but that always apply are:
clean mating surfaces, clean bolt threads, drink beer, look
for worn/missing/damaged other parts nearby, etc.

One would think that any belt could be examined and tried. If it looks like
something is out of whack or it acts
odd after installation then try another. I don't think that seat belts are
swapped out after every auto accident
where the car is repaired and not written off. There is a bit of reluctance to
sell parts for them or used units
due to liability concerns but I don't think there should be.

Wouldn't likely do much harm if it did, inside the can but there would be
little point to putting it in if so.

I wonder what might happen if one tried to start it and it didn't quite catch.
A bit of fuel vapour in there along
with a bit of a spark perhaps. Poof! Wouldn't blow the muffler apart but might
cause fire that would continue if it
did not start. No exhaust gas to displace oxygen?

One of the reasons I suggested in another post to make it such that one could
open it up periodically and see what

The nice thing about coolant is that it leaves a white residue behind
after evaporation, so you can easily spot the leak source. I just found
a loose upper radiator hose on my '87 wagon, happened to notice a wet
spot under the car and popped the hood to find the leak in about three
seconds. I'm hopping this will cure a persistent coolant loss problem.
I have analyzed the used engine oil three times and found no evidence of
coolant in the oil, so I don't think I have a leaking head gasket. Have
new expansion tank and cap.
