Re: [MBZ] Quandary

Mercedes steering is more precise. The dial indicator is for
precision. I have always done them the same way I did detriot iron.
Over many 100s of thousands of miles, I have never had a problem, and
never used a dial indicator. But I don't run on a track either.
Just on ordinary American roads. If you run on European roads, you
may need the precision more. (or roads in most of the rest of the
world.) Ever seen the narrow roads, sheer cliffs with no railings
and tight switchbacks?

After driving my old 190Dc, a detriot car of the 70s feels like
herding sheep. Fortunately Detriot iron has gotten better. My 84
Escort Diesel had rock and pinion and handled well.

If that is the case, then why do you have to use a dial indicator on the
MB bearings to get the pre-load set right, but on the detroit stuff you
can just do the "tighten until you feel drag then back off a little"

Re: [MBZ] Alas, No Lexus....

Are you back in FL? I thought you were in OH!

Took delivery of a 2004 Ford Focus ZTW wagon yesterday. 124k, one
owner, local (Florida) car, full service records, maintained by
local dealer on the recommended schedule. Gray with gray leather
(yes, leather!) interior.

Only issues were a power lock solenoid on the passenger door and the
AC needing to be topped off to be ice cold.

I've put about 75 miles on it so far, and have been really pleased.
No, it's not an MB, or even a 300TD, but it's good solid reliable
transportation for now. Even went to the dealer today and got a oil
change (synthetic), tire rotation and full inspection for $46. Not
worth the hassle to do it myself for that kind of $$.

I have gathered all the necessary detailing items so I can start in
on it, probably this evening, after things cool down a little. A
good wash, clay bar treatment, then some 3M Show Car Wax. Then the
interior, with the exception of the leather - I have to order some
Leatherique from George...

I would first try a change of fluid and filter, using Mobil 1 ATF. I
have been very pleased with this fluid in my car.

I believe your car would be one of those with a transmission prone to a
failure of the B2 piston. Symptoms are slipping out of or not engaging
1st gear, flaring shift into 2nd, but 3rd and 4th work normally.

Typically the failure occurs without warning but in my 300D it seemed
that there was some flaring for a few months before the piston
completely failed. Luckily the repair is not complicated, though many a
shop will probably tell the owner they need a new transmission if they
are not familiar with this problem.

But you don't notice it? And this was a tire store, not a Mercedes specialist?

If you apply brake and throttle for a few seconds with the selector in "L" (like
3-5 seconds, not a long time) where does the tachometer stabilize?

Sorting out the transmission controls can be quite a task, especially if

Sent Dory the '85 190D off to the scrapper yesterday. That car had some
fight left, even with no engine it REALLY didn't want to go.

The passenger side rear parking brake was stuck and I hadn't delt with it.
We had a Polaris Sportsman 500cc 4x4 to pull it on with. Normally this is no
problem, buddy Chuck has hauled many cars with that quad but it absolutely
could not move Dory. So we jacked it up and put a 2x12 under the wheel and
ski'd it out of my yard. Got as far as getting the rear wheels onto the ramp
and broke the winch cable. Tried pushing and got a little farther but when I
tried standing on the back of the quad to get some more traction the Polaris
slipped off the rear of the car and headed for the sky!
I was scared but buddy Chuck thought it was the funniest thing he'd see for
weeks...

Finally I pulled the offending wheel and slid the car up on the backing
plate...

Sad... Tonight we took RI Red, the '84 190D to Keene for dinner. The temp
seems to run high but it doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason so I
wonder if its a red herring. The non-contact thermometer will tell all.

Yup. Back in Tampa. Start my new job on Monday, the youngest starts college

[MBZ] Dory didn't want to go.

2010-08-14 Thread Curt Raymond
Sent Dory the '85 190D off to the scrapper yesterday. That car had some fight
left, even with no engine it REALLY didn't want to go.

The passenger side rear parking brake was stuck and I hadn't delt with it. We
had a Polaris Sportsman 500cc 4x4 to pull it on with.
I was scared but buddy Chuck thought it was the funniest thing he'd see for
weeks...

Finally I pulled the offending wheel and slid the car up on the backing plate...

Sad... Tonight we took RI Red, the '84 190D to Keene for dinner. The temp seems
to run high but it doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason so I wonder if its
a red herring. The non-contact thermometer will tell all.

[MBZ] transmission question, 1981 300SD

2010-08-14 Thread P. Prud'homme
While back, I bought a 300SD at an auction. The car needs a minimum
maintenance.
When I first took it to the tire/alignment shop, the owner of the shop
mentioned
to me that the transmission was slipping in 1st gear. hummn!

I am trying to make sense of this before I get into it. The transmission oil
looks clean from the dipstick but before replacing fluid, filter, etc., is
there
something else I should aware of? Thank you.

I've put about 75 miles on it so far, and have been really pleased. No, it's
not an MB, or even a 300TD, but it's good solid reliable transportation for

that kind of $$.

I have gathered all the necessary detailing items so I can start in on it,
probably this evening, after things cool down a little. A good wash, clay bar

Hi Gang!! -
Thanks for the kind words!

Surgery went great! There was no infection so I didn't have to have a
spacer instead of a new knee fitted. I have done all the physical things
needed to go home but since they require I stay 24 hours after removing a
femoral block, I cannot go home until Sun AM. But that's still fast.

I get around really good with the walker - I'm sure home health/PT will go
equally well. I should be driving soon...

Thankfully the 300D is in good shape so that was something I didn't have to
worry about.

I see ya'll have been busy! I'm watching the W124 Rear Susp. rebuild and
saving all emails - it's something I'll have to do someday.

That E300 Don has sounds like a great deal! Would love to test drive one
someday - I'll bet the jump from Diesel is FUN!

Ya'll take care --

It is interesting that 4 GP lap times in the Mercedes W154 still are
listed. Illustrates how good those cars and drivers were. Better
yet, the cars are still nice to look at too. Not ugly like a lot of
race cars now.

Exactly! I think the current lap record for a "road based car" was set by
the Ferrari 599 FXX. Google it everyone, and see just what a difference a

Re: [MBZ] Quandary

2010-08-14 Thread Dieselhead
I have not had to replace a wheel bearing on a 126, or 124, but on
the older MBs, the bearings were the same as a plymouth, Dodge or
Chrysler, and I think ford also. If you had enough of the old
bearing race left to get the bearing number, any bearing shop should
have it or be able to get it for you. The MB wheel bearings are
nothing exotic.

FLAPS books are often wrong, and it is not just foreign cars. They
have lots of mistakes on domestic cars also.

I have a 1989 Mercedes 300 SE with 175,000 miles on it. I put the
last 40,000 on it and it has been a really dependable car even
though I have done a good bit of work on it. Thing is, the car is
20+ years old and it needs a paint job and the seats are cracked
pretty bad. I had a front wheel bearing go out on it this week and
spent the entire day today trying to get the right bearing turning a
1.5 hour job into an all day affair because all the car part stores
in my area have the wrong bearings and seals listed on their
computers. (This isn't surprising but it is an example of owning a
relatively rare car ) Thing is, do I put any more money into it?
It doesn't have a speck of rust on it but it has enough hail craters
to make it resemble a golf ball yet I still get compliments on it.
Just today a black lady said she really liked my car even though she
was driving a $40,000 SUV. Upholstery shop wants $800+ to redo the
seats, needs exhaust from the cat converter back, hail dents, oil
leak and the rear springs are sagging. Do I put $4000 into a $2000
car to have a $2500 car or plop down $4000 on another, newer car?

Good advise. And have a close look at those valve guides too if it's the
inline 6, it is getting up there with 175,000 on it. They may be the deal

How do you add freon if the compressor isn't running? Find a pressure or

I went through this with my 78 240D a few years ago - 1995 I think - and it
basically came to $3000 needed to make it basically as new. I would have
liked a new car at the time but didn't want to spend "new car" money. Then
I looked at what I'd get for $3000 on the used car lot - it became a
no-brainer.

But before you start throwing money at the problem, go through the car again
and find every thing needed to make it long term reliable and nice to look

Hi Gang!! -
Thanks for the kind words!

Can you use an old freon container for a recovery tank by pulling a
vacuum

in it, then hooking it up to the AC system?

No, not really. The problem is the phase change: in gaseous state
the refrigerant charge is many times larger than the size of that tank.
I've heard of people getting most of the charge out of something by
refrigerating the tank and heating (like in the sun) the car and letting
natural migration and condensation in the tank do most of the work, but
I think that takes just shy of forever to do.

I'm a big fan of vent-able test refrigerants.

Re: [MBZ] ML320 status

2010-08-14 Thread OK Don
Can you use an old freon container for a recovery tank by pulling a vacuum
in it, then hooking it up to the AC system? At least good enough to not be
dumping all the R134a into the atmosphere?

The indy shops around here want $154 each for the expansion valve and the
receiver/drier - I ordered then from Rusty for $30 and $23. They are getting
between $90 and $100 per hour. My only concern is not having a way to
capture the Freon when I open the system.

Sounds to me like its got a big leak and she charged it up real quick in
order to sell it, then it leaked down after you got it.

How do you add freon if the compressor isn't running? Find a pressure or
temp switch and open or short the wires, as needed?

I found a note in one of the service tickets from the PO that stated that
the expension valve would need to be replaced sometime in the future. That
was in 2008 when she had freon added, and there was a charge for UV dye on
the ticket.

For a big boat with a low powered 3 litre engine, I think that's some pretty
good driving and a very respectable time.

Pretty sure they also "bank" the rails in curves so that the outer rail
is somewhat higher than the inner, depending on the radius of the curve
and the speed limit on the track.

I must have been overcome with the noise of the 103 motor but that
should have read "One more for good luck", perhaps my fingers are being
subliminalagain.
Although if I get a chance to flog a half decent car around the ring, I
would be a pretty lucky fellow.

If it's listed here, hopefully it's still available, at least more
