I take my loaded trailer to our landfill where they weigh each axle for
me. Cost: I give her a Dunkin Donuts card.

Now, I have data and don't have to base critical judgments on opinion.

What they 'really looked like' has NO bearing. What was their rating at
45#.

If you have no data, you are stating an opinion.

If you ignore the load rating of the tires and just put on what fits, I think

Re: [MBZ] Swapping a 5spd into my 87 300D

2010-11-13 Thread Rolf
I take it all back. There are some issues, I def need the larger
flexdisks from the 300D on the front. The carrier bushing needs to be
replaced. The gearing needs to be shortened up, 2.88 might be ok 3.07
would be a hoot. 65mph is 1850 rpm. 70mph is 2000. Once the turbo kicks
in it really winds up. I need to see if there is a chart of clamping
pressures for the pressure plates like there is on the 123, there is not
enough pressure for the torque. With my 123 I went to a larger beefier
clutch and flywheel, gained lots of torque but not much go. I would like
to find a stiffer pressure plate with the hopes that it grabs better.

I switched to the standard shifter and my shifting complaint is gone
(well maybe now the knob sites a wee bit to high), I put the carpeting
back in and the clutch is just fine. I got the brake lights sorted
today, there was a missing tab on the pedal I had so the pedal cluster
came out again, along with the clutch line from the reservoir, what a
mess. It is all cleaned up now and reverse lights work as well. I could
not get the clutch NSS switch to work right so I just hotwired it.

So many things to do so little time..

Re: [MBZ] Leak-down testers

2010-11-13 Thread LWB250
I look at the used tool thing two ways:

1.) When I was in tech school, a lot of guys scoured flea markets and garage
sales for old Craftsman tools. Even a bent or chipped screwdriver could be
taken to the closest Sears store and exchanged for a new one, gratis.

2.) Buying a used or new high quality tool (Snap-On, Hazet, etc.) has some
value as well. Try a Hazet or Snap-On combination wrench in your hand, then
hold a Craftsman or other (lesser) brand. The feel of the premium quality
wrench is far different, and more ergonomic than the Craftsman, I'll bet.

The first Hazet wrench I owned was a combination wrench that has a hex "bit" in
one end for differential/transmission drain plugs and a closed end wrench on
the other for oil pan drain plugs. The first time I held this wrench I knew
why it was expensive. The angles the ends are cast at are perfect, the bends
make it "just right" for proper leverage, you name it.

I suspect that those tools are hardened - you'd need a precision grinder
instead of a lathe, or beable to harden mild steel after you turned them on
the lathe.

I don't know where they are made. I bought a W123 pre-chamber puller and
an injection pump delivery valve holder loosening tool (the type that has
all the splines). The pre-chamber puller seemed OK, but the delivery valve
tool was almost worthless. Once I had the delivery valve holder out (by
using the holder locks as crows-foot wrenches), I had to grind a lot of
metal off the delivery valve holder and ream out the center of the Sir
Tools tool to make it just fit over the holder. I was NOT pleased. I'm
thinking about getting a rebuilt pump from Rusty and, if I do, the
correct delivery valve tool will be included with the order.

I forgot about that.

The fit and finish of the tools I bought (the prechamber puller and
delivery valve holder driver), however, leave something to be desired,
not to mention that the deliver valve holder driver did not work as
received.

I don't recall having seen before the bottom part of their web page with

I bought sets of Craftsman screw drivers and metric sockets, open-end

I don't know about that, really.
We have been trained to buy on price, hence, price = god for over 40 years.
Then when price stressed us to buy china rather than USA - we did that
- we bought china, not quality.
Somehow I cannot agree that regulation / taxes makes us buy china & price.
I think it is our fundamental greed - get more from each dollar -
rather than any analysis of quality versus more for each dollar. It
is greed by dozens of middlemen in getting china to our store shelves.
I have had zero problem over the past 20 years without WallyRigg &
LLChina - as I search hard for USA stuff and find good quality vintage
stuff that has put up for the test of time and is still useful. I was
surprised to hear that even MagInstrument is made in china now - I
thought it would be USA forever.
Somehow the gov't argument does not stick - but that is pure opinion.
I agree in general about less gov't, but it is not the main problem in
the plethora of china stuff. Price gouging by middlemen hurting both
producer and consumer is the bigger problem.

I think it was 1200 or 1250 lbs per tire; boat weighs 1700, trailer probably
weighs at least 500, so I was probably right at the edge or even beyond the
limit.

In my opinion, I was asking too much of those tires, that is why I bought new
tires with substantially higher rating.

In China or anywhere else you get what you pay for. Apple makes their
PCs, laptops, phones, iPods, etc. in China but they specify a level of
quality and accept nothing less. And Apple hardware is among the best
if not the best consumer-grade stuff available.

If HF or anyone else wanted higher quality from China, they could get
it. Not as cheaply, and that's the issue. People who buy from HF are
NOT shopping for quality. There are places to buy quality tools, and
they are not putting HF out of business, whether their tools are made in
China, India, Germany, or the USA.

[MBZ] OK Don 300D update

2010-11-13 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
I just came in from messing with the car for a few minutes
(while kid is taking a nap). Fluid does not smell burned or
anything, proper level. Wife said after they filled it back up it
did the same thing which I take to be slipping when trying to
shift into a higher gear. I just took the thing for a drive and
it shifts just fine into all gears. When you rev it up I can hear
a little bit of a whine that may be coming from the tranny. I
suspect the filter is plugging up so I am going to change it next
chance I get before it gets driven anymore. I think the tranny is
OK. I still need to pull the IP on that car though since I think
its the cause of the miss on #1 when it cold for the first several
miles. Just about everything else has been done to correct it.
It does seem to have a decent sized oil leak coming from it
somewhere as well.

Re: [MBZ] Leak-down testers

2010-11-13 Thread E M
Garage sales are often a good place to find old tools too. Often good
quality, and around here, they tend not to be the items people run to
first.

I went to buy some Craftsman tools a few years back, as I've heard they are
good quality, and US made. Every tool I picked up in the store, said made
in china on it. No, I didn't buy them. Asked the guy what was with all the
made in china stuff? He said, don't worry, if it fails, they all have a
lifetime warranty. I guess that would be ok, assuming my time was worth
nothing, and I had nothing better to do than run back and forth replacing
tools.

I think good quality sockets are something you buy once in a lifetime, and
they'll probably last the life of the guy you will them to as well, if he
gives them decent care.

124 rear suspension experts;

Yesterday I took some time to look at the spring link bushing job. I've got to
do this on my '95 E300, and soon also on my '87 300TD, so I'm thinking hard
about investing in the "special tool". Wish I could find one made in china...
just kidding Mao and all the rest.

The service manual section 35-114 lists two special tools, one for the 201
chassis (201 589 03 43 00) and one for the 124 chassis (129 589 01 43).

Searching on Samstag's website, I found this for $137:

http://www.samstagsales.com/mercedes.htm (search on that page for 0721 00 03).

This is described as a Matador bushing extractor. "Matador bushing extractor
<http://www.samstagsales.com/images/mt0721-00-03x.jpg> for MB models W 201 and
W 124. Setting and extracting of bushing of the rear axle."

Attached are a couple of pictures. What does the List think - will this tool
work?

the rear end on the ground. He got stuck one time with a tractor
on it when he was pulling out of a gas station. He had to unload
the tractor to get out onto the street again and then reload the
tractor. Luckily the tractor was operational. I hate to think of
trying to do that with a non running vehicle of any kind.

Fundamentally we are consumers looking for the best deal for the buck, not
idiots. I'd prefer that the federal government get further and further OUT of
the liberty-crushing mama-state business, reduce our regulatory (i.e. EPA) and
tax burdens to the point that American manufacturers are one more even footing
with the Chinese, so that the price on the shelf makes it far easier for
consumers to select "Made in the USA". In other words, consumers didn't drive
manufacturers out of business, government regulations and taxes did.

The issue is *much* larger than price alone. That is the issue we
need to grasp.
Now, do we wait for mama-federal-govt to slam our face in to the issue
of price alone is not god, or do we *see the light* now on our own and
do it?
If *we* do it, we can carry the pride of having done it rather than
having someone else do it. We gain a self satisfaction that has not
been american for over 30 years. These issues are priceless, but the
price god has clouded our vision. Fundamentally, we are cheapskates,
we are freeloaders, we are masochistic, we are idiots. Can we be
other than this? - yes. Will we do it? - probably not. The end will
happen before we begin to think of anything other than price.

manufacturer to make high quality tools and blast the HF market to
cheap-dom. However, nobody will push any china makers to do this.
Ah, someone sez, what about china made fill-in-the-blank. Probably,
but we don't see it in the stores - only in certain china stores,
perhaps. Someone could make a killing by offering traditional
guarantee Snap-On quality china made tools at a price less than china
made and at much less profit. The profit motive in china made is
s high, greed reigns. At least that is what I read on the
internet (NOT).

I needed to buy a starter switch (manual pushbutton with two terminal
posts for bat. cables on the back) this is similar to the foot
starter switch used on cars/trucks in the late 40s and early 50s
after the mechanical linkage went out, and before the starter relay
became vogue. The switch is for a 40s vintage tractor. I looked
online, then decided to go to the CaseIH dealer to get the real
thing. Well the "real thing" was $17 and was labelled CaseIH on the
bag and made in china. I told the parts guy they were selling me a 5
dollar chinee switch at a "Made in USA" price. The chinee switch is
notably cheaper looking and I am sure is much cheaper on the inside
also. I don't expect it to last long. BTW, when I opened the CaseIH
bag there was a plain bag inside it that contained the generic chinee
switch.

I'd rather buy HF tools than pay made in USA prices for chinee junk.
At least HF charges made in china proces for most of their stuff
instead of made in USA prices for chinee junk.

Bought some salmon the other day that was labeled product of Canadagreat.

Opened the box and it said processed in Chinahuh?

Did some research and found out that the salmon is caught just
inside the three mile limit and sold to the chinese processing
vessels just outside the three mile limit.

Youngest son is in his first year at the university working on his marine
science degree. He's taking an aquaculture class this semester that has
enlightened him as to the source of much of our commercial seafood.

Some pretty interesting stuff if you're a seafood consumer, especially on fish.
(I prefer shellfish myself, not fish.)

He has mentioned some of the misleading approaches to marketing seafood as was
mentioned. It is apparently being done purposefully, so that the consumer
thinks they are buying a fish from a particular region or caught/raised in a
particular manner.

Nice.

[MBZ] FW: Opinions on this trailer

2010-11-13 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
Several years ago I got some truck tires for my boat trailer from Tire Rack for
$70 each; they have a pretty high load rating, 1900 lbs I think, and are
bias-ply tires. I don't notice any improvement in how it tows, but I have a
lot more confidence that I won't blow a tire when evacuating for the next
hurricane. They also have a recommended inflation pressure of 65 PSI; the
radial tires they replaced had a maximum pressure rating of 45 PSI and really
looked underinflated even at that pressure.

I made a CLT of sorts for older Diesels with loop GPs from an old
GP. I punched out the center, and put an air line on it somehow.
then a pigtail to the airhose. Pull all the GPs, put the engine at
tdc. You have the choice of two cylinders, 50/50 of being right.
Once you find which is tdc of the compression cycle, turn the air on
and listen for air leaving via exhaust and intake. turn the engine
and follow the Zundfogle. It does not tell you leakage percent or
anything like that but you can hear if you have problems. depending
on the air pressure you use, you will probably get air past the rings
too, so that is a confusing issue.

Mountain Man, et al.
Probably Chinese of one political stripe or other.
The net search turned up a lot of leak-down testers, a lot of clones
and other types.
The least expensive US made was $139.95, physically identical to the
HF one. So, either it is a clone, or it is a Chinese model
re-labeled "Made in USA."

Would the US manufacturers/distributors do that? You betcha!
I'm 68 and will probably not use this tool more than a few times,
should I spend my scarce dollars on an inexpensive tool or not?
I, an Englishman, am, after all, going to use this tool on a German
manufactured car. I use Snap-on tools, Craftsman, SK, Husky (US and
Chinese), Mac and others.
We are an in an international commercial war and the good old US of

[MBZ] 124 spring link - special bushing extractor tool?

2010-11-13 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
124 rear suspension experts;

W 124. Setting and extracting of bushing of the rear axle."

Attached are a couple of pictures. What does the List think - will this tool
work?
