Glad you mentioned that Max. I was going to but decided to see what
everyone else said. While the symptoms are classic valve guides for
a NA gasser, with a turbodiesel, the turbo might be the culprit. I
just replaced on on a OM603, and the symptoms were the same, except
it did not have 650K on it.

Congrats. I have over 400K on a SDL, but gave up on it because it
got hit in the doors and the tinworm cancer was on all body panels.
Klebs SDL was cheaper than repairs.

Clint,
Those who tell you not to bother with repair are letting the odometer
influence them.

I like to tell people that these cars will run as long someone is willing
to maintain and repair them. And they can be indefinitely repaired. Its
when people start cutting corners and making compromises that things start
to turn sour.

Find yourself a mechanic who understands and have a valve job done. Its a
small investment into a car that have already given you so much.

Its likely your engine doesn't need any bottom end work since its been well
maintained.

It takes a special dedication to do what you've done. Keep up the good
work!

If that's a 617, it's time (actually long past time) for a valve job
and inspection of the cylinder walls.

Allowing it to burn excessive oil will cause the cylinder walls to
wear out very fast.

Make sure the correct valve guides are used, and you will probably
need new valves if the guides are badly worn, maybe new seats.

stuck rings. If you have been driving it gently, youve probably carboned up
the rings, etc. The usula cure is an "Italian tuneup", also known as "drive
it like you stole it". That having been siad, my highest mileage MB is only
370,000 miles, so what do I konw?

Re: [MBZ] Daily digest format

2012-03-30 Thread OK Don
First, this is not a Yahoo group - so it works differently.
I tried the digest mode for a while, but ended up with a gmail account
specifically for this group. All the email in the gmail inbox is from this
group, and nothing else. Gmail does a good job of grouping the emails by
subject, so all the messages for a given thread are together.

YMMV.

[MBZ] 700K-mile 300SD

2012-03-30 Thread Rolling Hills Farm
Hi all,

My beloved 1984 W126 300SD, as of today, has 698,883 miles on it.  Still going
on the original engine, with no overhaul since new.  Majority of the miles are
highway miles, and just like tractor-trailers that typically run a million
miles with no sweat due to the fact that they stay on the highway, the engine
is still running like a champ.  About 6 or so years back, it started using oil,
somewhere around 640K miles or so.  Before then, it didn't even use oil between
3K-mile oil changes!  Determined that the valve guides are leaky, thus the
extra smoking and oil consumption.  Just in the past couple months, the smoking
has gotten worse.  My goal since the day I bought the car 13 years or so ago,
was to see just how many miles it would go without an overhaul before it
absolutely gave up the ghost and puked.  I have a parts car with a
perfectly-running engine (unfortunately unknown mileage), which will be
replacing the engine in the SD once it
finally dies (car itself is rust-free and still in unbelievably great
condition and a pure joy to drive, and after a cosmetic restoration about 10
years ago, is still GORGEOUS).

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on valve guide replacement.  I've had 5
different people tell me that I should just leave well-enough alone, and not
replace the valve guides, but rather just keep driving it, adding oil, and put
up with the smoking.  Something about replacing valve guides that might screw
up something else and make things worse than they are.  As I said, I want to
see just how far I can push this original engine before it dies.  I don't abuse
the car; I very, very seldom drive it over 65 mph, and religiously do oil
changes every 3K miles.  It's using around 1.5 quarts between oil changes,
which to me, is incredible given the fact that the engine has never been into
since the day it was built.

Any ideas?  Smoking issue is worse than before.  Every time I take off from a
stoplight, I have a lot of blue smoke (burning oil), and when I start it the
first time every day, it belches smoke like you wouldn't believe.  Just in
regular driving though, there's no visible smoke.  Engine still sounds awesome
(that opinion coming from comparing it to the other 20 or so 2.4L and 3.0L cars
I've owned over the years).  Power isn't what it used to be, but that's to be
expected.  I use Marvel Mystery Oil every other oil change, don't know if
that's any help or not, but I use it.  Someone recommended that I use some
Lucas oil additive, maybe a half-quart every other oil change.  Any advice as
to how I can keep this old girl going as long as possible, and stretching out
the miles as long as I can would be MOST appreciated!!!  My wife jokingly tells
people that I love that old car more than I love her, but ya know that isn't
true, lol!!  It's certainly a
part of me, like family.  I am determined to reach one million miles
eventually, although I know there's a snowball's chance in Purgatory that it
will happen with this original engine.

Thanks in advance,

[MBZ] Daily digest format

2012-03-30 Thread Rolling Hills Farm
I just wanted to send a quick note about the format of the daily digest emails
I receive.  As a newbie to the group, and a long-time MB diesel driver, I'm
glad to have signed up with the group.  I have an issue with the emails I
receive though.  I subscribe to several other Yahoo groups, including some dog
rescue groups, and I've found this particular one especially difficult to read.
It seems that the majority of the other groups are much easier to read than
this one.  For example, I have been involved in the past with a particular dog
rescue group, Eskie Rescuers United.  The emails I receive daily have clickable
links so you can go from one post to the other in the email received, and see
the topic, and the replies for each topic, so that it is very easy to
differentiate one topic and associated replies from the others.  In this group,
it's so difficult to figure out which messages are new, and which are replies,
and with the replies, just
what the replies are replying to!  As with the other Yahoo groups I'm
associated with, this group's email begins with a list of topics, but after
that, it's more or less just a huge jumble of replies that takes a while to
decipher out.  After the list of topics, the next line shows a reply to a post,
but I haven't a clue which topic it's replying to.  Just wondering if there's a
way that the moderator can re-format this group to make it easier to read, or
if that's even possible.  Most days I look through the email, and just get
frustrated trying to figure out who's replying to what, and just end up
deleting it rather than spending the time to figure out what's what.  Just way
too confusing compared to the other Yahoo groups I subscribe to.

Not trying to be a pest, just sharing my thoughts on the daily emails.  Not
trying to be critical; I'd just like to see this a little easier to read!  I'm
an MB owner for life; daily driver's a 1984 300SD which should roll over 700K
miles within the next 2 weeks!  About 698,600 miles when I came home today!
(It was featured in the MBCA Star magazine a couple years ago, and was on a
syndicated television program about 3 years back). Oldest is a 1980 240D
4-speed that the wife drives daily with about 362K, plus a 1987 300D with 320K
or so and a 1982 300D, about 262K.  Love my old diesels!!

Thanks for your time. Have a good day all,

[MBZ] OT: Source for electronic rectifier control

2012-03-30 Thread Dieselhead

Alles:

I need a source for a 25 Amp 110 volt AC (input) variable linear DC
voltage control.

A listing of components to build one would be ok too.

Could I build such a thing out of one of the variacs I have with a
full wave bridge rectifier? What else might be needed for this

I am leaving it all intact. Was going to remove it, but decided that it would
not be good for resale value once I get her restored. Probably do a tear down
and cleaning as I go so that it is able to hold vacuum.

BTW, Took the car to fill the tank and now the trunk opens. Guess I just have

Went to FLAPS and wiped out their supply of 15-50. All two cases. Been years
since they carried it and I was down to two quarts at home. Now I can change
the oil in the 95ED. Got two gallons of rotella for use in the SL. 10-40 so
that I can swap out old oil once Rusty's package arrives. Fresh filters all
around and the goop and gunk are removed and I can move the car to M1 all
around.

No need to butcher it. The system, when working as designed, needs
no such help. You just have to find and fix the leaks. The engine itself
is already a sufficient vacuum source for everything. The next owner

Re: [MBZ] Bull or buy it?

2012-03-30 Thread Scott Ritchey
I missed your year/model, but I suspect there is a major junction for all
the door vac lines under the floor mat on the passenger side and that is the
best place to begin troubleshooting. Get a mitivac (little hand vacuum pump
with a gage, and get a cheap one) and a couple pieces of rubber hose and
check out each leg of the door lock vacuum system from that one location.
The hard plastic lines last forever unless they are cut but the rubber "T"s
and "Y"s dry, crack, and leak in time. Also, the rubber diaphragms in the
vacuum elements do the same and you may be able to rebuild those cheaper
than replacing them. Also have some plastic golf Ts on hand to temporarily
plug lines for troubleshooting and also to plug leaking circuits until you
can fix them (so the rest of the circuits will still work. Finally, the
little vacuum switch in the driver's door can leak if it's not rigged right.
Assuming you have a 123 model, the door panels are easy to remove and
install compared to a 126. The service manual has a good vacuum schematic
and you'll need it to keep track of what's what.

be found. Manual said there are limited open cycle before the vac res goes
flat. That must be what is going on, since I drove it home and it all
locked up well. IT will be a task for a sunny day when I have many strands
of colored vacuum hose to futz with.

You don't need to make it as tight as the old one. It will get
that way over time.

What makes it so tight is the taper lock between the head of
bolt and the strike - kinda like lug bolts.

Personally, I put a bit of grease on the threads and head so I
can get them out later. I have not had one loosen on me yet.

There hasn't been any Mobil 1 15w50 at local stores around here for a
long time.

And the 0W-40 is $9.665/qt.

And, BTW, Amazon's search feature stinks. I search for Mobil 1 0W-40 and
it gives me results for Valvoline Synpower, Lisle 14500 Oil Filter
Socket, Mobil 1 M1-204 Extended Performance Oil Filter, Mann-Filter HU
718/5 X Metal-Free Oil Filter, and even Cobra 19DXIV 40 Channel Mobile
Compact CB Radio. Makes shopping difficult.

You're right; it can be useless. As you may have noticed, I used a Google
query specifying Nextag, and then the Nextag link which provided the Amazon
link.
If Amazon redirects your query about an item to the dealers website and
states

that Amazons protective and other features do not apply, I do not order it.
If the non-Amazon dealer rips you off (I paid about $30 shipping for a $17
item),

Amazon offers no recourse and the 800 number connects you to someone in
Panama who, speaking very broken english, says that Amazon allows dealers to
set their own shipping charges or something to that effect.
Since the 15w50 oil appears to be an Amazon item, it's probably safe enough
to

order it.
I've had better luck ordering from Ebay and paying via Paypal but in this
case

Amazon seems to have the best price.

Re: [MBZ] Changing door striker plates - anyone BTDT?

Turns out the plates for BOTH rear doors are buggered as well - that's
4 for 4 on this car! What could the PO have been doing that would
have destroyed all of them?

Re: [MBZ] Templates

2012-03-30 Thread Frank Peele
Wilton,

I was born in Goldsboro. Both sides of my family were from that area, but I
never lived there much as my dad was in the Navy. Many, many visits to
family there over the years, most of them including a trip to Wilber's for a
family-style feast. Sure makes my mouth water to think about it!

You're thinking of the Edwards Mansion, next to the San Bernardino County
Museum. Still doing a brisk events business, so I hear. If it's been a few
years, you wouldn't recognize the area today for all the commercial
development around the place.

How 'bout your Goldsboro connection?

All the best,

How'd you know 'bout Wilbur's? USAF? Seymour Johnson AFB?
BTW, remind me name of the nice restaurant in a big old house in an orange
grove in Redlands area.
Restaurant plus weddings, parties, etc.
