Re: [MBZ] Ramps

2012-04-21 Thread G Mann
Some time ago I solved that problem by making a set of drive up ramps using
2X12 lumber and 4x4's in short lengths as spacers [laid the 4x4x12 pieces
at 12 in. intervals and spiked it all together]. The end result was a drive
on ramp that elevated the entire car about 2 ft. I put a big block at the
end to keep from driving forward to far and set the slope so I could drive
up easily on the approach end. I put 4x4 posts in the ground to keep the
ramps from twisting out of position and it was all pretty safe and solid.
After the first time using it, I laid bricks in sand between the ramps and
could actually work off a creeper with room to spare.
It worked well until I moved and the new owner used it for a time as well.

If I was to do it again I would likely make the whole thing out of steel
square tubing, however, as a quick and dirty it didn't cost all that much
and was quick to build.. saved a lot of time and effort jacking up cars and
trying to work on them and I felt much safer.

Re: [MBZ] Ramps

2012-04-21 Thread Dieselhead

Though this approach does keep the entire underbody area clear, I'd
rather use jack stands to raise the entire car. Even with the parking
brake on, the car can roll (ever drive off without releasing the brake?
It's often not very noticeable). It'd be difficult to chock the wheels
with them up on the ramps. And on ramps, you can't turn or remove any
of the wheels.

Allan
--
1983 300D
1979 300SD

It is spooky to drive up ramps the first few times. Also spooky when
one slips on the concrete. Having a spotter to watch and guide you
the first few times is a good idea. A layer of plywood between the
stand and concrete is a good idea.

If I am not happy with how the car is on the ramps, I will take the
floor jack and jack up the front end, then get the ramps squarely
under the tires.

I have at times, raised the front end with the floor jack, then put
the ramps under. I am much more comfortable working under a car on
ramps rather than on jack stands.

Cheap crummy ramps will also collapse

You can make satisfactory ramps with 2x10s or 2x12s with better
guides and better stops than the flaps variety chinee stamped steel
ones.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel OIL again

2012-04-21 Thread Larry T
During the Oil Analysis test, the viscosity it tested at 100C. a 15W40
should test at 40W (not below, not above) at 100C after 4000-500 miles,
perhaps more...

The oil analysis report is broken into 3 basic parts - metal
contamination - looking for excess copper, lead, iron, alum, etc, then
there's the Additives section where the normal additives are shown with
their levels. Finally theres the physical part where viscosity, grade,
water presence, glycol presence, etc is shown.

I can send more info if you;re interested in buying some kits? I can
provide this info to anyone of course - which includes a sample Analysis
report. The sample I use is a sanitized version of a real test - a long
distance trucker gets his oil tested with me and I have a sample page
with 5 or 6 tests on it.

Re: [MBZ] Craftsman Tools

2012-04-21 Thread Dimitri Seretakis
I hate to break it to you Jerry but as of the past two years, Sears has been
slowly outsourcing their Craftsman hand tool line to China. It started with
the full polish pro line of wrenches- no longer pro and now china made. The
raised panels are still USA. Then they started with the raised panel ratchets-
yes the ratchets are now made in China! Disgusting! The low profile ratchets
moved to Taiwan- still a bit nauseating but not quite barf territory. The
premium line of ratchets which only came out around two years ago is still USA
and very pricey- almost tool truck pricey but truly a professional tool with 84
teeth and super high quality. The ratcheting wrenches are all China now.
Breaker bars- China. Sockets still USA except impact sockets which are China.
Hurry to Sears to find the last bits of USA tools still on the shelves!

A. With rumors that Sears will be going into bankruptcy, what will become of
the opportunity to return "broken" hand tools to Sears for an even exchange?

A. Just because a company files BK, doesn't mean they are going to fold up.

B. I had a Craftsman good quality offset screwdriver (slotted, not philips),
just like this one on Ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Craftsman-Crown-Series-94110-Double-Offset-Screwdriver-CLEAN-/400292779011?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item5d334f1403&vxp=mtr

One of the four tips broke off while using it. When I brought it back to the
store, all I was offered was one with one tip on each end, something that
looked like it was worth about 50 cents.
I decided to hold out for an identical one, but I do not know if Craftsman
still makes them. Can I make Sears buy me the one on Ebay?

B. No. Make them order it from the catalog. Also, there is a Craftsman
Industrial catalog that most people don't know about. You can buy Craftsman
Industrial stuff from the catalog or places like Grainger.

C. One day about five years ago, I was examining a 7/16 wrench in my tool box.
It surprised me to see "Craftsman" printed on one side and "Made in Japan"
written on the other side. When I asked the guy at Sears, he merely
shrugged

C. Made in Japan is not a bad thing. Japan produces very high quality stuff, as
does Taiwan, believe it or not.

D. I suppose it only fair to point out that Sears probably gets ripped off by
those of us who, for example, use a normal socket in an impact wrench, knowing
that if it cracks it can be exchanged for a new one.

D. Very foolish. I have an IR Titanium impact that could turn normal sockets
into flying shards of shrapnel. Not safe. Always wear eye protection too. You
can buy a lot of things at Sears and Grainger. I've looked through their
catalogs for hours. I have yet to find "eyes" in their catalogs.

E. Did you notice that Ace hardware now carries Craftsman tools?

E. Yes.

F. Please don't anybody ruin my day by telling me Craftsman tools are now made
in China. They aren't are they?

F. No. However, they do have a Companion line of tools that is.

G. I still have the 1/2" Craftsman socket handle my father used when I was
growing up. That and a three-foot section of pipe made a fine breaker bar. It
never broke or bent.

G. Unfortunately, Craftsman homeowner grade tools quality has dropped over the
years. Their Industrial line is significantly better (and priced accordingly).
They have whatever contracted manufacturer make them to the Sears Craftsman
specs. To offer the lifetime warrantee, and to compete with other big box
hardware store brands, they have to cut costs somewhere. That and the fact that
most younger adults just don't work on things anymore (as discussed by me in
another thread), they can get away with it. I would prefer to buy a quality
tool that never has to be returned.

If you want better quality without paying Snap On prices, look at Craftsman
Industrial, Proto, S-K, Armstrong, etc.

It is electro-mechanical. When power is applied to the solenoid
coil, it creates a magnetic field that pulls an iron bar. This
movement puts a conductive plate across the terminals that
connect to the battery and the motor part of the starter. The
moving bar also pushes a gear out to engage in the teeth along
the rim of the flywheel. When working, the system insures the
only time the motor runs is when it's engaged with the flywheel.

My guess is that the conductive plate is stuck to the contacts
because you say the motor spins - but not that it's turning the
engine.

Not looking forward to pulling the starter - I suspect
it's very heavy not the kind of thing that's easy to work

It is heavy. But on a 240 I have pulled them from above. With
the air cleaner off - (and maybe the battery out?) there was
enough room to unbolt and remove it by leaning over the fender.

B. No. Make them order it from the catalog. Also, there is a Craftsman
Industrial catalog that most people don't know about. You can buy Craftsman
Industrial stuff from the catalog or places like Grainger.

C. Made in Japan is not a bad thing. Japan produces very high quality stuff, as
does Taiwan, believe it or not.

F. No. However, they do have a Companion line of tools that is.

Thanks Craig. Reading your reply, I had the idea of four bi-level ramps. First
level just high enough to fit in front of the rear wheels, second level then
placed in front of first ramps to get some extra height. Would have to be well

[MBZ] Craftsman Tools

A. With rumors that Sears will be going into bankruptcy, what will become of
the opportunity to return "broken" hand tools to Sears for an even exchange?
B. I had a Craftsman good quality offset screwdriver (slotted, not philips),

C. One day about five years ago, I was examining a 7/16 wrench in my tool box.
It surprised me to see "Craftsman" printed on one side and "Made in Japan"
written on the other side. When I asked the guy at Sears, he merely
shrugged. Incidentally, its been my experience at the Sears store I frequent
that most of the employees know next to nothing about tools, and those who know
something have a limited knowledge, though they do have a good grasp of their
inventory. As a kid, when my father shopped at Sears, I would spend as much
time as I could in the tool section drooling over the choices.

D. I suppose it only fair to point out that Sears probably gets ripped off by
those of us who, for example, use a normal socket in an impact wrench, knowing
that if it cracks it can be exchanged for a new one.

E. Did you notice that Ace hardware now carries Craftsman tools? I thought they
were exclusive to Sears. I understand Ace will not exchange a tool.

F. Please don't anybody ruin my day by telling me Craftsman tools are now made
in China. They aren't are they?

G. I still have the 1/2" Craftsman socket handle my father used when I was
growing up. That and a three-foot section of pipe made a fine breaker bar. It
never broke or bent.

To drive up on four ramps at once? Since the height of the ramps I have
is greater than the ground clearance of my cars and since one would have
to put the rear ramps in front of the rear wheels like the front ramps
are in front of the front wheels, no.

Could one drive the front onto a pair of ramps and then use the jack to
put ramps under the rear wheels one at a time? Yes, but I'd be concerned
about the front end rolling around on the front ramps during the process.
Once you got it there, assuming all four ramps were on solid footing, it
would sit there very nicely with the parking brake on.

Driving up ramps is nerve racking for me and I never liked the saddle mount
stands I've owned forever.

My whole attitude about working under the car changed when I bought the Esco
stands reviewed here:
http://revlimiter.net/blog/2010/07/mega-jack-stand-review-1/
Weight rating is similar to my old stands but the way they sit under the car
gives me piece of mind over the old racheting version. I still put stacked
2x12s under the wheels.

I often run the car up on the ramps, then use the factory jack to lift the
side I want to work on, remove the ramp on that side and put a jack stand

The AC compressor works because it is the opposite of a steam engine. An
internal combustion engine would need a new cam that would turn it into a
two stroke engine. Intake opens at TDC to let steam in then closed at BDC
where the exhaust opens till closed at TDC. If you can find a cam or get
one ground like that it should work just fine. The only other problem I
can see is the steam bypassing the rings and valve guide seals and causing
problems with the oil.

Do you have links on converting an IC engine to be a steam engine? I've

Re: [MBZ] Save the Date-ChowdahQ V

2012-04-21 Thread Dwight Giles
Rusty, (& others who replied to my Save the Date.)
I just switched my list EM over to Google and it seems to hide any messages
of importance to me.
Anyway-Providence airport is about 15 minutes from the park- Rusty you and
yoru wife could have a nice white mint 90 300D 2.5t for your anniversary
weekend. (I'd give you the CD but not sure where the tranny status will be
then. Logan (BOS) is about 1 1/2 hours way but maybe Fred could stop by on
his way-he lives in Lynn. In addition to new food items, we are working on
some ideas for a parts swap game or pseudo auction etc-ideas appreciated.
Also new categories for contests etc.
As for what to do in RI-there is Newport, a weekend cottage on the ocean,
take the ferry to Block Island or take the ferry from Quonset to Martha's
Vineyard or lighthouse tour> Car wise there is the Larz Anderson Auto
Museum in Brookline-just out of Boston-unfortunately their MB weekend is
the next weekend-Sept 16.
http://larzanderson.org/events/lawn-events/lawn-event-list/ And yes
Maine-where we go for holiday-there is the Owl's Head Transportation
Museum in Rockland ME- http://www.ohtm.org/edu_col.html They have an 1885
Benz. (replica?)
Anyway, let me know if I can help anyone with arrangements.
