Haha. Not hard to honor something that'll never break or rust! The thing is
that the Rusty option (pun not intended) is so cheap!
To be honest, I bought a TV exhaust years ago for a 450SEL and it didn't fit
right. I was living in CT at the time so I just drove to their factory in
Plainfield and they cut and re-welded it on the spot- sort of a custom job for

Funny that I was asking about diesel exhaust longevity the other day and my
entire exhaust system decides to suddenly, without any warning, fall off my car
while cruising on I-95. So now the question is what do I do as far as
replacement? I need it fairly soon as the local police up here in Good 'ol
Brunswick ME have little tolerance for automotive shannanagans and I would like
to head back to Boston in a less deafening manner. I can go to the local
McParts, buy from Rusty and get a better deal on a better part or order a
Timevalve stainless or something. I just need it fast! Suggestions?

hardest track. Then last night I watched some Top Gear episodes, one
where they were running a new McLaren on the track. Got me wondering
how difficult it would be to take that Google technology, add in all the
car systems and sensors, then have it learn how to drive a track really
really fast. I am thinking it would not be that hard to do, airplanes
do that sort of thing pretty well these days -- 4D navigation and such.

It would be kinda fun to see a bunch of robot cars, unlimited power,

Indeed, MB does know about those sorts of things, which is why the
circuits

are designed for the factory load. When you increase the wattage of the
bulb, you need to increase the wiring to handle it. Hence the relay (to
handle the higher switching loads) and new larger wires.
All a moot point, unless your new bulbs burn up the old wires (not
likely).

Perhaps a set of driving lights added to the car would be the ticket for
more light? Even better, four more added above the windshield?

Re: [MBZ] OT: Gen Set, Manual Cutoff switch

2012-05-09 Thread Jim Cathey

The power feed is now centralized, but I did _not_ get my
manual cutoff switch, and so I still need two generators.

By "cutoff switch" do you mean "transfer switch"?

Not really. I have a big-ass 400A manual cutoff switch, a big
ol' red-handled surplus Westinghouse that's outdoor rated. My plan
was to use that, initially to support my current backfeed procedure,
but later to allow _me_ to install a manual transfer switch
(of which I also have some surplus gear that I ought to be
able to make work). This'd all be outside at the meter stand.
Could switch to an automatic switch if I wanted to, later, but
I have little interest in that. I don't _want_ hospital-grade
power, and I certainly don't want a big-ass house-sized generator
to come on by itself in the middle of the night, or when we're
not even home, and suck the tank dry before morning. I want to
be in control. (But I want it to be easy enough for my wife or
son to do, too.)

The big red handle would give me the easy ability to work on
my own wiring, and the ability to test any automatic system
'for-realsies'.

My surplus switchage cost me $60 at auction. Not too bad, even
if I never can use it. See:

I think that in USA, all the (very few) 124 manual transmissions were five speed
and all the automatics were four speed. We didn't see the 5 speed electronic
auto box in the E class until 1997. It's a solid transmission, as long as you
replace the conductor plate (and a spring in the valve body on 97-99 models)
ever ten years or so. Mine has 237,000 miles on it. The conductor plate was bad
when I bought it at 234k, so I had the spring replaced while the valve body was
removed to replace the conductor plate.

Re: [MBZ] Bright lights gonna set my 300TE on fire

2012-05-09 Thread Jim Cathey

As I found on my wife's 450 SL, the voltage drop in the
wiring harness was 1.2V on high beams. That's roughly
10%, which is significant. After the relay job the
voltage drop was only 0.3V, even with 400W of high beam
bulbs. Ignoring the increased wattage, the voltage
change alone netted about a 30% increase in light.
Bulb life, though, should have gone down to 1/3 of
what it was before. TANSTAAFL. That car had no
bulb-out system to worry about.

[MBZ] Google's robot cars pass driving test

2012-05-09 Thread Gerry Archer
Google's autonomous cars have passed their first driving test in Nevada,
which included a trip along the famous Las Vegas Strip. The self-driving
cars are based on Toyota's hybrid hatchback

The desert state is the first to grant the vehicles a licence to use public
roads. They are controlled by computers processing a combination of mapping
data, radar, laser sensors and video feeds.
Officials from the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles rode in the cars
"along freeways, state highways and neighborhoods both in Carson City and
the busy Las Vegas Strip", they said in a statement.
It comes after Nevada passed laws to create a new type of licence for
autonomous vehicles last year, which came into effect on 1 March.
The autonomous cars, based on Toyota Prius hybrid hatchbacks, will now be
allowed on public roads for further development and testing, carrying a
distinctive red licence plate with an infinity symbol on the left side.

Google is one off several firms racing to develop cars able to drive
themselves. It is competing with car manufacturers as well as military firms
to develop the technology. The web giant's executive chairman Eric Schmidt
has argued that the fact that current vehicles rely on human drivers is a
"bug".

"It's amazing to me that we let humans drive cars," he said in 2010 as
Google ramped up its research,in partnetship with Stanford University.

As well as Nevada, Google's home state of California is considering laws to
allow autonomous cars on its roads.
"The vast majority of vehicle accidents are due to human error," California
state Senator Alex Padilla said in March when he introduced autonomous car
legislation.
"Through the use of computers, sensors and other systems, an autonomous
vehicle is capable of analyzing the driving environment more quickly and
operating the vehicle more safely."

Speaking of sunglasses, you might have Georgia wear dark wrap-around
sunglasses for 15 to 30 minutes until she's seated in the car and ready to
start
night driving. Years ago a radiologist I worked with at a hospital would
wear
a special type of glasses with colored lens before doing certain xray
examinations;
flouroscopy; I think.  He said this caused the pupils to open wider;
something
they were not accustomed to doing since working/living in the dark is not
what most
people do. Teenagers are still in a developmental stage, so Georgias poor
night

vision; if that is her problem; may correct itself in time.

The lenses and reflectors look clean and I am not keen to pull them apart
unless I really have to, 22 year old plastic can be brittle.
The X-treme vision are not supposed to put out a blue light and the
reviews for them are favourable.

Like I said Georgia is not very experienced and driving at night is not
the easiest thing to do, if I can increase the light output of the
headlights it should help her to be more confident driving at night, the

Personally I have never thought that the light output (specially on low
beam) was that great in the TE, many years I mucked around with fancy
bulbs in the 123 I had but the results where not that great.
I bought a pair of X-treme vision off ebay for AU$54 this morning so we'll
see how they go when they get here and I fit them.
The local auto sparky wanted AU$89 for a pair, so I told him that I would
be shopping online. I can understand him putting on a 15-20 dollar mark up
but 35 is fleecing and he did not even say that the price includes
fitting.
Yes I know that the life of the + bulbs is shorter. I think I read that
the average for the +80's was 350 hours and that the standard bulbs is 650
hours.

frankly, while it's likely that your headlights could benefit from
some better quality bulbs, i think your best benefit might be to rig them
up using relays if you're handy with that sort of thing, and then check
to see if you really need brighter bulbs. it's also not impossible that
you might benefit from taking the lamps out and making sure they get a
good cleaning; no matter how bright a bulb (globe?) you put in there, if
the lenses and reflectors are dirty, they're not doing their best job of
putting the light where it's supposed to go.
keep in mind that the more 'plus' you go on bulbs, the shorter the
life of the bulbs is likely to be.
also, the more you get into the blue stuff, the less clearly you're
likely to be able to see detail. (think about how difficult it is to
focus on a blue light; i've read that our eyes actually respond better to
light closer in color to the natural yellow of sunlight.) much of the
blue stuff on the road these days is a result of marketing playing to the
mis-impression left by the blue cast of the early HID lamps and the fact
that people associated that with "blue=new=better".

i'll second the referral to Daniel Stern for topics of lighting; an
interesting character by many accounts, but seems to know his stuff when
it comes to automotive lighting, and his prices, while not always the
very cheapest, are fair considering the knowledge he's willing to impart.

lastly (and probably most importantly!), if your daughter is really
having that much problem with vision at night, there's something wrong
there. young eyes like hers shouldn't be having that much trouble with
the dark, so either she has an strong fear of driving at night (which is
respectable), or there's something wrong with her eyes. it might be
beneficial to have those eyes checked, just so you know where the problem
