Timing belt life is generally 100k kilometers.
The chain life of the single M102 engines is the same, plus the guides

Having read hundreds of posts about timing chains here and elsewhere over
the last 15 years or so, I do believe your mileage life figures are just a
wee bit optimistic.

Same for timing belts. On a non-interference engine it does not make much
difference as long as you don't mind hitchiking. As to the rest, the engine
can be destroyed and no sane person would go anywhere near 100K miles.

My records say prices peaked around 13 Jul 08; regular was $4.089/gal and
diesel was $4.809/gal.

Prices dropped to $1.589/gal for regular and $2.329/gal for diesel on

I do. My associate has one (2011 I think) and it goes fast and gets
good gas mileage. It is the only car made in the last 30 years,
outside a long 126, that I don't mind riding in the back seat. 32 to
25 mpg for a car that size is pretty good. Makes a 240D look like a

Along with the spiraling deficit, fuel prices have doubled in the last 3
years and dragged everything with it. There's nothing that gets to the
consumer without the use of fossil fuels - often more than once - for
instance, a shipboard container, goes on a train then to a truck.

I won't go into the vast fuel reserves we have within our borders - it's

Thanks Rich:

There are several open connections on the box that sits on the valve cover. If
the CD has the photo diagram that might help me make the hookup. I have two
lines and four connectors if I remember correctly. The valve cover was bad so I
had to order another one and my memory faded while waiting.
Same thing with the fuel linkage, I think I put it together correctly, but a
diagram would help. Got a piece of a vacuum line today to replace the one going
to the turbo, it was hard a brittle and also broke on valve cover removal.
Pieced it together to last night to warm the tranny to change the fluid. The
car was a total slug so I don't know it it is vacuum lines, fuel linkage or no
turbo.

Tire Rack and similar websites seem to have the best prices, but
around here at least, the dealers charge higher prices for mounting
the mailorder tires such that little or nothing is saved by ordering
them.
I've seen several simple tire changing machines at Harbor Freight and
other sources. Have you or others had any experience with them? I
seem to remember prices in the $150 range for the machines which would
be paid for after mounting two sets of tires. Balancing can be done by
using a hub clamped in a vice and lubricated with very light oil. Did
that in years gone by.

BTW, Kelley generally is a good tire. It is an old brand. I don't

Actually, this has more to do with the fact that prices for both rubber and
carbon black have been at record highs lately. Rubber because of severe weather
in Asia in 2010, and carbon black because of industry consolidation (one less
supplier in the market has raised prices). And high oil prices haven't helped
either for the latter.

I agree completely. Spend an afternoon giving the inside of the new fender a
POR15 treatment before going to the body shop and you'll be way ahead.

At $308. each, that only accounts for 3 shop hours at a decent body shop. 3
hrs to repair, to paint standard, a rusty fender, is on the low side. Plus,
when you are done, it's still a rusty fender under the paint.

Even with shipping costs, the $308 figure, IMHO, would be the better
investment. You start with a clean, no rust, set of fenders, then paint
them off the car. Undercoat or preserve the back side and have a much nicer
end result.

Wal-Mart: $5 mount a carry-in, free mount on purchase, $6.50 lifetime

We selected tires for dad's Dakota at Tire Rack, called Farm Bureau for a

Welcome to 1932, where a set of tires cost more than a lot of used
cars. Both courtesy of "progressive" socialist regimes.

The worst shocker was that it's going to cost me over $800 for new tires
for my Nissan Frontier, which I will need before winter. I know truck
tires are more, but over $200 each for a "non-major" brand name seems
just astounding.

The better labor deals on carry-in tires seem to be at Wal-Mart and my local
Farm Bureau co-op.
Wal-Mart: $5 mount a carry-in, free mount on purchase, $6.50 lifetime balance,
$2.50 stem (or you can buy a 4 pack of stems and they'll install them free with
the mount/balance job). Figure $50 and an hour or two wait to install four tires
if you buy your own stems for $1 each.

We selected tires for dad's Dakota at Tire Rack, called Farm Bureau for a quote,
and FB was cheaper after adding in Tire Rack's shipping charges, so he just
bought the whole package from FB.

When tires were 6" wide, side to side balance was a lot less important than now.
I'd be reluctant to gravity balance a $120 215/55-16 tire.

They (our government) raised tariffs on Chinese tires a few years ago. It has
allowed domestic manufacturers to raise prices accordingly. IIRC, the Chinese
responded by raising tariffs on US chickens.

Everything is going up. When you get all those extra trillions of

obligated to pay chasing the same amount of goods, the price of things
has to go up.

I've seen several simple tire changing machines at Harbor Freight and other
sources. Have you or others had any experience with them? I seem to
remember prices in the $150 range for the machines which would be paid for
after mounting two sets of tires. Balancing can be done by using a hub
clamped in a vice and lubricated with very light oil. Did that in years
gone by.

Seems that way, doesn't it?
I just checked, my last order of 195/65-15 H rated Generals was $67.50 shipped
in August of 2008.

Now it's $87.25. If you factor in the $50 rebate I got, it's $55 vs $87.25.
Not double, but still steep.
What's double is going from 15" 190D tires then to 16" E320 tires now.

Allan,
Have you also noticed all the used car lots, used tire shops, and thrift
stores? But hey, according to the "gov", the economy is improving and we're all
happy.
