That only works if the other guy's client doesn't muck up the

You get outside about a 6 block square around Bourbon St and you are
taking a huge risk. We thought Rita might provide the rinse cycle after
Katrina, but alas it was not to be.

Although I understand that there was this "club" out of town a little
ways, in an area that did not see a lot of palefaces, that had some
interesting action going on through the night... not that I could
attest to that, nosiree...

Re: [MBZ] Anybody there? now school and stuff

2012-06-18 Thread Rich Thomas
The road heads south, almost dead straight, for 16mi from the "main"
road. Once you cross a railroad track along the main road, you are in
the woods, with a tree canopy over the road for maybe 10mi or so. A few
houses along the road, coupla small black churches (saw the preacher
arrive at one, on the way back only 2 cars there) but every mile or two
will be a large brick pillared gate of some sort with a discrete sign,
this plantation, that plantation, etc. and a road leading back down into
the woods. One of them had a large gate house, maybe 2000ft2, then the
road goes on back. Some have no signs but the pillars and gates.
Along about mile 10 is a large bridge over a tributary of the Ashepoo
river, and along in there are what appeared to be old rice fields, some
had water in them (state law prohibits messing with the flood gates that
let water in and out so as to provide habitat for the waterfowl, etc.).
On past there a few miles the houses start to appear, toward the end of
the road which ended at the river. Some sorta ratty houses on pilings,
a coupla shrimpers at a boat dock, a little store for the marina, and
that was about it.

We saw maybe 10 cars in our 16mi out/16mi back, mostly white folks.
These properties are owned by wealthy people, mostly kept in
conservation, some go back 300yr or more if they survived the Late
Unpleasantness. Aside from the road being fairly nice, I am guessing
there is not a lot of difference in what is there now v. what was there
a coupla hundred years ago when Carolina Gold rice and Sea Islands
cotton ruled the planet.

[MBZ] New neighbor?

2012-06-18 Thread Dieselhead
Saw a bronze color 200D drive by this afternoon on my 1 1/2 block
long street. Thought first it was a 220Sb, but then I looked closer
at the taillights and saw it was a 110, not a 111. VERY UNUSUAL!
not a standard color. I was near a running skidloader, but after I
pondered for a sec, I did remember hearing it go by, so it had to be
a Diesel. A 220Sb, I would not have heard over the skidloader.

This evening, I drove around and found it parked on an intersecting
street, a couple blocks away. It has Oregon plates on it. Hopefully
the owner appreciates it and is not using it for a cheap throwaway
"greasecar."

Maybe tomorrow night I can walk over and see if it is a visitor or a
new neighbor. A good 200D is getting scarce as hens teeth.

[MBZ] Far out OT: Voyager

2012-06-18 Thread Rich Thomas

The Voyager 1 spacecraft, launched 34 years ago, is about to
cross into the great unknown --- currently poised on the
edge of interstellar space, it will soon leave our solar
system forever. This song, "Dark Was the Night, Cold Was
the Ground" by Blind Willie Johnson is included on the
Voyager Golden Record as an expression of human loneliness,
and it's a fitting soundtrack for Voyager on this endless,
   solitary journey.

This is how da real blues is done, y'all...

Why you no need last fall?!?

Gump was complete and ready for stripping. I got most of it out the door. I
have a few other parts on the shelf, not much in the way of trim. There will
be a swap meet up in Bellingham, WA late August. Kent Bergsma is hosting. You
should be able to find what you need there. I am taking my stuff up there

[MBZ] Brake Dancing

2012-06-18 Thread clay monroe
PPI for Frosch showed brake lines were end of life and there was uneven wear on
driver side rear. Fronts had life, rears were needing attention.

Saturday, BiL and I put her up on the rack and tackled two jobs. Brakes were
pretty easy. I had ordered complete brake set with rotors and all from Rusty
for Gump. Turns out I had the bulk of parts still on the shelf, needing only
new rotors and pads up front. Based on PPI, I did not get rotors, just pads.
Front lines and pads were easy and went on fast. Rears were less good.

Looks like I need to get all fresh pins for the ATE calipers. I have new
anti-rattle springs that did not need to go on, so they will wait until the
next time. Rear passenger caliper pins were missing the retaining neck spring.
Also all the bolt retainer clips were shot all around. We fashioned retainers
for the pins by fabbing metal covers.

Driver side caliper was bad. Outside pad had jammed and the inner pad was worn
to the metal. Caliper had over extended trying to compensate for the non
moving pad. The rotor has small damage to the inner race, but the rest is all
good. Should be able to run it until next pad change. Got the fresh pads in
and caliper working. Ran it 50 miles and let it sit over night. No leaks.

Bleeding was a PITA. Tried to bleed the thing to death, but all we got was
air. We had loaded the reservoir with fluid, but the rear chamber decided to
not fill. Did not want to overfill, but turns out you need to overfill to get
the fluid to spill over into the rear. Once we got the front lines working, we
went back to the rears. Huge burp and spooged out nasty black glop then lots
of clean. Bleed, drive and bleed again. Stops on a dime now.

Next job was to fix up the reflectors from the w116 euro to take the adjustment
tabs for a w107. Drill out the rivets for the 116 and yank, then the same on
the 107 and rivet them on to the shiny new reflectors. Have to remove the
center bulb holder and make adjustment to allow the daytime lights to fit. 107
is at 6 o'clock, 116 is at 5 o'clock. Three tiny pin point retaining marks had
to get dimpled out and file slot for the center retainer.I think I will
replace all bulbs with LED. Should reduce the load on the system.

Re: [MBZ] Anybody there? now school and stuff

2012-06-18 Thread Rich Thomas
Well it goes like this... A tradition is that when a student starts
medical school, they get a short white jacket ("coat") to wear, which
designates them as doc wannabe (it makes it easy for everyone to
recognize on whom to dump scut). That is called the "white coat
ceremony." When they graduate medical school, they get to wear the long
coat which designates a real doc.

In this case, given his mama is a doc, she got to be the one who put the
coat on him, hence, to "white coat" him. There were a lot of doc
parents who got to do that, was kinda interesting. A few women docs but
not too many. I think there were a couple of couples too, and one
grandfather. The class was evenly split M/F which will make it look a
lot different in maybe 30 years or so, or sooner maybe.

Oh, and that is why I put it in "quotes" given I was creating a term
there through an improper construct.

You need to get out into the real world more! Which brings up another
anecdote -- yesterday my wife and I went cycling out in the country
(like, way out in the country). We parked at a little gas
station/general store to ride out further out into the country. Another
couple joined us. As we were getting ready an old black man came
walking across the parking lot, dressed in his church-goin suit. As he
walked by he spoke to the other couple. Now, I found it interesting
that I could mostly understand him, given he was speaking very very deep
Gullah. What he said was (translating), "You had better lock your
truck." It came out sounding to them sorta like "yabetchocolateutt."
After repeating himself to them 3 times, and finally speaking in
something much closer to English, they got it. They live down the road
from us, in the insular gated community. I told her after, when she was
remarking on his manner of speech, that she needed to get out more and
mingle with the natives. I don't think she liked that. OBTW she is
from Greenwich, CT, which is probably about as white as where they now
live. I had a few words with the old gent, me speaking my version of
English, and him in his version, he was nicely warning us about the bad
people around there. Within a minute or so we had a fairly complete
understanding of the local social situation. He went on down by the
road to wait for his ride to church, we did 34miles out to the end of
the road, through old plantations, rice fields, marsh, and the Ashepoo
River. It is a whole nuther world.

Re: [MBZ] Eating belts

2012-06-18 Thread Randy Bennell

Remember the days when things did not change very often?
There were many years back in the 50's and 60' s where parts were
reasonably standard for a long while. The basic small block chevy engine
did not change much for a good many years until they got into smog
control and then fuel injection. Even the early injected models were
throttle body and not a whole lot different than their previous models.
Tires changed a bit when they went from bias to radial but sizes did not
change much for a long while.
Now it seems like every year the tires get bigger. Pretty soon we will
all be running around on 22's. Lord help us.

You need a 123 then. That would limit you to like, two choices of tire. Or buy a Ford

I don't have a pic of the alternator (that I can find), but the nut was still
on the shaft, and it looked to be holding a sleeve...

But here's a pic of the pulley (after it played "stone")

Re: [MBZ] 201 brake rotors

2012-06-18 Thread Curt Raymond
Pretty much, I was just curious if replacing the rotors without doing the
bearings was something that could/should be done.

About 4 weeks after the driver's side wheel bearing grenaded the passenger side
died at a stop which I thought was an odd place for that to happen. That was
during the Ice Storm of 2008 and we were driving the 190D because we couldn't
get gas to drive the Ranger (no power). I managed to find a parts store open,
our local Car Quest is a remarkable place, and they had the bearings and seal
so we were back on the road the next day.
