Well, there were a lot of really cool cars in the 60's - in terms of styling, the cool factor, and technological improvements of the time. But, in terms of reliability, modern cars are MANY MANY standard deviations better than those old cars. 60,000 miles was practically worn out back then on MOST cars. AND 100,000 miles was definitely worn out. Think about all the maintenance that had to be done too. Tune-ups every 15,000 miles AND these were real tune-ups not just replacing spark plugs every 30,000-50,000 miles. Back then you had points and condensers to replace, and distributor caps and rotors, and carbs that got out of whack, and repacking wheel bearings every 15,000 miles. Boy, I am glad those days are over. The thing I think is funny is how much horsepower has been gained in the last 2 decades. We think of these cars from the 70's as being hot rods, but nearly all of them have less horsepower than a Honda Accord does now. For example, remember Starsky and Hutch's 75 and then 76 Ford Gran Torino? It looked cool, it was supposed to be fast. The 351 Windsor by 75 was so detuned, that it produced 160 horsepower. A current Toyota Camry has 178 horsepower from its FOUR CYLINDER engine. Even if it the Starsky and Hutch car had 460 that was optional as the police interceptor, it only had 202 HP. Or the 1977 Trans Am that Smokey drove in Smokey and the Bandit. Those cars looked cool (and I still want one), but it had a 6.6L 400 engine that produced 180 horsepower. How dull. The 2012 Honda Accord 2.4 liter FOUR CYLINDER produces 177 Horsepower. If you get the 3.5 V6, it has 271 HP. (that surprises me!) Donald H. [MBZ] Dead battery in 240D
Many thanks to all who offered suggestions on batteries. Drove my 240D to Advance Auto thinking it had the two year old Advance battery. I was wrong; it had a 7 year old Autozone battery. Still planned to buy an Advance battery since it was the cheapest with the rebate, but found that I would have to go home, order and pay for the battery by email, and then go back and get the battery. Since I wasn't sure how many starts were left in the dragging battery, I went on to Walmart and got one. (Sams club is about 30 miles further.) Total cost was $117.xx. It was the same size as a group 49 battery but had a different number. The receipt is in the car and I'll look up the group designation if anyone wants to know. Gerry From: Gerry Archer arche...@embarqmail.com I bought a battery from Advance Auto about 2 years ago. I opened the cells at home and found one cell with no visible electrolyte. The amount of distilled water it took to fill it up would make it seem that the acid had been added but not the water. Advance Auto would not give me a different battery when I took it back the same day. They said that they never open the cells and that I should not have opened the cells. The starter has been dragging for the past couple of days, so I'm going down to Autozone and get it tested today. I've had good luck with Autozone on batteries. Gerry From: Max Dillon meadedil...@bellsouth.net Any recommendations for a maker of good batteries these days? [MBZ] FS/BO: 615-617, 114-115 Paper Manuals
I am cleaning out the basement and found three paper service manuals for Mercedes Benz models 220D (115.110), 240D (115.117), and 300D (115.114) (UP TO 1976 MODELS). Make me an offer. (The original receipt says the chassis service manuals manual were $25, and the engine manual was $17. It also says the maintenance manual, which I don't have or at least didn't find, was $17.) The three books I have: Service Manual Engines OM 615-617 Service Manual Passenger Cars starting 1968, Series 114-115 Body and Chassis Volume 1 Ditto, Volume 2 These are fairly dense, I'm not sure how much book rates will run; maybe 10 pounds from 27705. Roughly the size and shape of a Priority flat rate box. The Chassis 1 book is in okay condition. Chassis 2 is in three pieces: cover and title page are off, then the binding broke at 42.0. They are not collector grade, but content is fine and usable on those two. The engine book has water damage, and a lot of the pages are sticking together. I have been able to cleanly pull apart everything I have tried, but there is a definite possibility that some content may be destroyed when you try to separate any particular pages. I'm mainly interested in getting them to a better home, I will take the best offer after a few days that covers shipping. Yes. Oil fills cylinder and exhaust smokes terribly. No external leak. I thought it was bad turbo and bent rod #1 before I figured it out. It's worth a preventive head gasket change in my opinion. At least then you can do it when you want to instead of when you have to. Newer revisions have reinforced the known weak spot. Re: [MBZ] '91 350 SDL $6500
MBUSA has a long history of adjusting (or making up) model nomenclature, on both gas diesel models specifically for the supposed benefit of the US market. But in the case of the 3.5L 300SD W140, it was simply a world wide marketing change (all W140 model designations were rounded displacements, i.e. 400SEL, 300SD for the 1st two MY). Too soon for the reliability issues to of had any hand in it. IIRC, most of the problem engines didn't begin to self destruct until near the end or just past the 4yr/50K warranty period. No? And as john mentioned, there is the current S350 BlueTEC 4matic, powered by a 3.0L V6 turbodiesel no less!
