Yes. But the real difference is the turbo. By making use of
the exhaust heat to spin the turbine which force more air into
the engine, the efficiency increases. That is, there is less
waste heat, so more of the energy in the fuel goes to turning
the flywheel and less goes out the tail pipe.

Therefore, a turbo-supercharged engine can generate more power
_and_ use less fuel.

For the lights you could use a light dimmer/switch (there are rotary and
slide), there are similar things for fans (Rockler sells router speed
thingies, a standard ceiling fan switch might work?). Some slight mods
on the thing might be necessary but those are cheap enough. Or just a
coupla flip or rocker switches and leave them run full bore.

If you wanted to hack a bit, you could get an Arduino with an AC relay
shield, you could bodge something up for less than $50.

involved removing the vacuum pump. The shop manual (BBB) states that removing

I'll see if the '78 240D can make it.

On the theory that it couldn't hurt anything I bought some of the Lucas magic
oil additive and gave it maybe half a pint. The stuff is clearly just a
viscosity improver, at freezing it comes out like extra thick honey, I only put
in a half pint because I got bored waiting for it to come out of the bottle.
Engine does seem a little quieter and I'll be dammed but I think theres just a
hint more power. I'll take whatever I can get.

I put a little in my Cub Cadet tractor too, that engine is getting pretty

[MBZ] OT Range hood again

2013-01-11 Thread Randy Bennell
The one thing I forgot to mention was that I would not mind getting rid
of the control board altogether.
However that would then mean I need to have some other means of varying
the fan speed as we do use all 3 ranges on that function.

Is this likely the sort of motor that would permit variation on a
rheostat of some sort?

[MBZ] OT - another electrical question

2013-01-11 Thread Randy Bennell

Anyone have any good advice in regard to range hoods?

We have a Broan unit. Maybe 5 to 10 years old.

I cannot recall the model but it is the curved one rather than the old
boxy one and it has 2 small halogen flood light type bulbs and a panel
on the face with push buttons for 3 levels of fan speed and 3 levels of
light.

Unfortunately, it would appear that the electronic board has suffered a
failure. There was a flash like someone was taking a photo and now the
lights will not work.

The fan still works fine on all 3 speeds.

We had an issue once before about 2 years ago when a bulb burned out and
I was putting a new one it. It went dead but that time it was a fuse
which was readily replaced once we took off enough part to get to the
board itself. I assumed I had done something while putting in the new
bulb but maybe not.

The gist of all this is that the replacement board is going to cost
about $200 and the whole hood only cost something like $300.

So, I have some choices.

I can replace the whole thing but that is a bit of a pain because it is
ducted outside and I will have to get the thing out and the new one in.
If so, I may swap to a Bosch. A bit more expensive but it looks to be
simpler.

I can replace the board and hope they have improved it. The new one has
a different # so I assume this may not be an isolated incident. Warranty
of course is long over.

3rd choice - and this one appeals to me as a frugal sort - is to find a
way to make the lights work without their board. Should basically be
doable as the board just facilitates the 3 light levels. I could readily
hook them up full power as I doubt we use the dimmed functions much
anyway - or I could put in a dimmer switch that would provide variable
light. The bigger issue with that is where to mount the dimmer etc.
SWMBO is not impressed with my frugal idea and is concerned that I may
make some Rube Goldberg contraption I guess.

So, I solicit your thoughts on the matter.

Randy who is going to have to make a decision shortly to keep you know
who happy

Yes, that answer is wrong, not only for me, but for the person that posed
the question on the page. There is one LED that indicates the batteries
need to be replaced. When that one lights, replace the batteries. When
all six light, the problem is something different.

If more than a few years old, electronics may have died. Most UPS seem to die
quickly once out of warranty. We only replace batteries when the UPS had never
been in service but simply sat on the shelf until the batteries got stale.

Or you can just go to the listmom or fleabay or the car-part.com and

I did this - bought a used one - when I was trying to do the
fix on my 83 300SD. Although it wasn't pitted as badly, the used one
leaked oil at the lower fitting like the original. Eventually I gave
up and just slathered the threads on the original with JB Weld. That
has been working for about 15 years. My plan is if/when I have to
replace the oil cooler hoses again and I can't get the lower hose off
I will do the JB Weld trick once more with the spare cooler I now have.
