Re: [MBZ] Fwd: you're advises please

2013-03-09 Thread Curt Raymond
Too right Gerry, I'm surprised by this attitude especially from Randy who keeps
cars long term. I think too many people buy a car they've been told is "good"
as opposed to one they like.

There was definitely an attitude from the '70s through the '90s that American
cars were junk which in the '70s and '80s was definitely true but these days
thats just wrong. Honda and Toyota have just as many problems and recalls
(sometimes more) as anybody else and frankly just about any car you buy is
going to go at least 200,000 miles so you're probably best of to buy something
you'll enjoy.

The Fiesta (to answer your other question) handled high speed driving just
fine. I've found Civics to ride rough and yeah the Fiesta is not as smooth as
my 240D but it would be unfair to compare them on that level. Its MUCH more
powerful than a 240D, more than a 300D turbo for that matter, maybe on par with
a 190D 2.5 turbo without turbo lag.
I found it plenty comfortable, I'm not short and I thought it had plenty of
room. The Snooks of the world will probably find it cramped, he's complained
about a 201 before which I find vast for leg room.

I wouldn't hesitate to take a Fiesta on a long trip. I went from Burbank down
to Anaheim which is about an hour ride with no problem.

It's the dark of the moon. 65% of the time there is more email during the
light of the moon than the dark of the moon.

More babies are born during the light of the moon.

Psychiatric wards go wild during the light of the moon.

There is much debate about the effect of the moon on human behaviour and
various research studies have disproven it, but employees of psychiatric and
obstetric wards know otherwise since they have to put in extra
supplies/drugs before the light of the moon.

Thanks, Curt. Needed that info on the Fiesta. Fiesta has interference
engine and timing belt, but Ford says it only needs to be changed every 150K
versus 60K to 100K for grand daughters Honda Accord. I can live with that.
Some Focus models/years have chains; some have belts.
Son bought a Ford Fusion Hybrid for his business. he's driven it about 75K
and had zero faults of any kind. Ford seems to have improved since the old

How does the cost to purchase compare with a same vintage Honda Civic?
I don't know what it is like where you folks are, but around here a
Ford

of any sort will depreciate much faster than a Honda and the Honda will
be pretty bullet proof for a lot of miles.
Based upon that, if I could buy a Honda for similar money up front, I
would go with it as it will likely be worth more in a few years time
than the Ford.

Not this Sunday but next, I'll still be in NC on Sunday driving back

Speedi-Bleed is a pressure bleeding kit with reservoir and a cap for

Will you be around this Sunday to meet up?

Thanks, Curt. Needed that info on the Fiesta. Fiesta has interference
engine and timing belt, but Ford says it only needs to be changed every
150K versus 60K to 100K for grand daughters Honda Accord. I can live with
that. Some Focus models/years have chains; some have belts.
Son bought a Ford Fusion Hybrid for his business. he's driven it about
75K and had zero faults of any kind. Ford seems to have improved since

Too right Gerry, I'm surprised by this attitude especially from Randy who

is "good" as opposed to one they like.

There was definitely an attitude from the '70s through the '90s that
American cars were junk which in the '70s and '80s was definitely true
but these days thats just wrong. Honda and Toyota have just as many
problems and recalls (sometimes more) as anybody else and frankly just
about any car you buy is going to go at least 200,000 miles so you're
probably best of to buy something you'll enjoy.

The Fiesta (to answer your other question) handled high speed driving
just fine. I've found Civics to ride rough and yeah the Fiesta is not as
smooth as my 240D but it would be unfair to compare them on that level.
Its MUCH more powerful than a 240D, more than a 300D turbo for that
matter, maybe on par with a 190D 2.5 turbo without turbo lag.
I found it plenty comfortable, I'm not short and I thought it had plenty
of room. The Snooks of the world will probably find it cramped, he's
complained about a 201 before which I find vast for leg room.

I wouldn't hesitate to take a Fiesta on a long trip. I went from Burbank
down to Anaheim which is about an hour ride with no problem.

How does the cost to purchase compare with a same vintage Honda Civic?
I don't know what it is like where you folks are, but around here a

Right.
When people take stereotypes formed in the 1970s and 1980s and apply them to
cars built today, it's pretty silly. Every time somebody says Toyota = Reliable
but Ford = Rubbish, I want to laugh in their face.

Even back in the day, reliability had more to do with the owner than with the
maker. In 235,000 miles, my Plymouth Horizon had the following failures:

Original battery in 13 months and 53,000 miles.
2 electrical connectors came loose in the first 10,000 miles due to not being
fully plugged in at the factory.
Heater core (poor fitting joint a factory worker thought he could bridge with
solder, and I was stupid enough to redo instead of replacing) 80,000 and 110,000
miles.

Front wheel bearing got noisy at 70,000 miles
Other front wheel bearing got noisy at 120,000 miles.
Somewhere between the wheel bearings I had to replace a relay that I killed
pressure washing under the hood.

Water pump leaked at 130,000 miles.
MAP sensor failed at 140,000 miles.
Replaced inner tie rod ends 140,000 miles.
Muffler rusted through about same time as MAP sensor died.
Alternator at 160,000 miles.

Failures that affected my ability to drive the car:
Had to push start when battery failed after I left headlights on for five
minutes.
Had to unplug MAP sensor to start the car when it failed, probably took me 20-30
minutes to start the car that day.

Although the defects were annoying (two electrical issues slightly so and the
heater core very much so), I don't think I would have done that much better
overall with a Civic or Corolla.
The stuff that was Chrysler's fault cost me 10 minutes of messing with the
wiring behind the fuse box to make my taillights work the first week I owned the
car, a five minute stop at the dealer a month later in which the service writer
shoved a computer connector together to make my tachometer work, and the
afternoon I spent resoldering the heater core. The afternoon I spent installing
a new $56 heater core was my fault for trying to resolder something that didn't
fit together right from the factory.

I think the engine has to be dropped out which probably means it is

Those were the "real old" days. I drove a '28 Model A ice truck (probably
one of the first pickup type trucks) as a teenager. Those were the "real,
real, old days".

The first car I had any monetary interest in at all was a model T touring
car. Four of us teenagers went in together and bought it for $25. It made
it back to the neighborhood from across town but we could never get it
started after that.
After we moved, an old fellow told them to take out the plugs and fill them
full of ether. Started every time after that and the kids drove it until
the cops caught them for not having drivers licenses or a valid tag.

If you do go that way, ignore the desire to get a really old classic soft top,
and go with the 560SL. Parts are cheap still, not being superseded and making
your classic less classic with each repair. Wheels are 15" and you will be
more likely to find rubber that fits. The one minus is that you will probably
have to do a complete replacement of all seals and rubber bits.

Re: [MBZ] Italian car

2013-03-09 Thread clay
My brother had a 124. He was able to fund his mechanics retirement on that
car. Was in the shop more than the road and was finally traded for a dune
buggy.

Would love to. Maybe, expanded to include "Starting a 240D on a 5-degree

But, of course, all I ever did to mine (240D, that is) was wait for "wait

[MBZ] Snowmobile, snowmobile, snowmobile, snowmobile, snowmobile

2013-03-09 Thread Curt Raymond
Some of you were interested the last time I talked about snowmobiles so I
thought I might give you an update on today.

Thursday/Friday we got a solid 6-8" of snow so I figured today I'd get out and
ride. We usually don't get any riding in March so this is a gift. I took the
Polaris I'd talked about before and my '78 Arctic Cat Pantera.
http://i.imgur.com/uF2JKq9.jpg
The trailer tilts but its tough to hold it tilted and ride on when you're by
yourself so I stuffed it into the snowbank to make loading easier.

The snow is pretty much like cold mashed potatoes, soft and sticky which is
poor for riding, I did a lot of this: http://i.imgur.com/djBeEyz.jpg because
its sticky I couldn't get up on top of it at low speeds (say under 15mph) so it
would plow in front until I lost traction. That pic is when I tried to head out
to the big trails but couldn't get much out of my friend's yard. That was
actually the second time I got stuck...
Another view: http://i.imgur.com/79R4sUL.jpg you can see my friend's house in
the upper left of the picture.
Looking backward: http://i.imgur.com/G0U5VTF.jpg you can't really tell the snow
is up to my knees.

Of course I'd forgotten my snowshoes, what I really needed to do was snowshoe a
path and then ride it, oh well.
I gave up on riding to the big trails and eventually made a figure 8 about 100
yards long in my friend's backyard and then I tried to make one end a smoother
curve and http://i.imgur.com/KShGuHD.jpg found an old maple stump which impeded
progress...

Anyway even though I didn't get out to the main trails and probably only
traveled maybe a tenth of a mile total I consider it a real good day. I had fun
and got some exercise. I'm gonna hit it again tomorrow morning early. Hopefully
the snow will harden up good overnight tonight so I can get a couple hours of
trail building before it falls apart again. Its supposed to be very warm this
week so we'll probably drop the snow pretty quick.

2013-03-09 Thread WILTON
Last time I went snowmobiling in March, I was whipping along at bout 50 mph
in sparse woods west of The Soo, MI, and suddenly came upon a LARGE clear
area (NO trees); saw Coast Guard icebreaker breaking a channel not terribly
far out in front of me and turned parallel to 'im, thinking, of course,
"Obviously, he's on Lake Superior. I'd best stay back here." 'Began to
realize that the undulations I was feeling were not from little wind-blown
ridges of snow but from waves UNDER the snow and ice on which I was riding.
'Kept throttle wide open at about 55 MPH as I made a slow, skidding turn to
the right to get back in the trees and get the hell off Lake Superior.

[MBZ] 2004 E320 4matic Driver's Sise Headlight Assembly Replacement

2013-03-09 Thread Robert Koziak

Hi all,

It's one project after anotherstill working in gathering parts to
install a navigation system. My driver's side headlight assembly has a
slight crack and I was considering getting a replacement. I have Haynes
manuals for my two other Mercedes (1983 300D & 1990 300E) but can't find one
for this car. Any suggestions?

Does anyone have step by step instructions for replacing the headlight
assembly? I was told it might involve removing the bumper. Also any opinions
on aftermarket vs an OEM headlight assembly. I have always used OEM parts but
was just curious if I am wasting my money in this case. I would also consider
buying good used.

We had a beautiful day in the northeast so I was enjoying my favorite
pastime!

You may. Very fascinating and interesting place. Google Kangerlussuaq
(Sondrestrom), Greenland, and read lotsa stuff about it. Many other
interesting places all around Greenland, too. Nuuk, for example is capital
on west coast; pop. about 15k, I think. Air Greenland operated 2 or 3
flights a week from Baltimore for several years; 'don't know about now,
other than flights from Keflavik, Iceland to Kulusuk and SAS flights to
Kangerlussuaq from Copenahgen.

[MBZ] Left side upgrade

2013-03-09 Thread clay
Seattle finally has a sunny day streak, so I decided it would be a good time to
wash Frosch.

Last week I learned the water pump was going south, so am waiting on parts or
cash to accumulate to be able to do that task. I do have a few bits of top
seals to install to keep the cabin a bit dryer. I figured the driver side was
worthy of my attention this day.

Driver side window is not lowering, the rubber is torn and old, resulting in a
whistle at speed. I removed the old seal and tried the new rubber to see is
URO is at least better than what was there and close enough to original. It is
much the same, so I got so astrolube and a few popsicle sticks to poke and coax
the rubber into the tracks. Having the hard top off might have made it easier,
but the new stuff fit quite well. Really give a good seal, but the glass is
too high and does not fit into the groove as it should. Being able to drop the
window a smidge would help.

I have all new fuses and cleaned the fuse box contacts, so that should not be
an issue. Last spring I had removed the window and cleaned up the external
posts to insure good contact. Today I pulled the switch, took it apart and
cleaned the contacts inside. A bit of schmutz. Put a multimeter to it and got
continuity. All good. Except I still do not get window motion. So I take a
look at the plug in block. Seems one wire has decided to defect and no longer
is held by solder.

Get the soldering iron out, reflow the solder and then add a bit more new.
Heat that up again and slip the offending wire back into hot solder and let it
cool to solid. In the meanwhile the wires fall out of the block and I of
course did not map them to their positions. Drat! I know where ground goes,
but the others I am not so sure. Four wires, ground is brown wire and looking
at the block head on is at 1100 hours. Other wires are Red (0100) Green (0800)
and Black, the loose wire I put at 0500. Still no window motion. I check and
the fuses are all still good.

If I have to tear into the door panel, I will, but any other ideas?
