Re: [MBZ] 1999 Mercedes E300 Turbodiesel Fuel Injector Leak Issues(UNCLASSIFIED)

2013-05-05 Thread John Reames
The ones for the OM606 are longer by necessity; making the engine 4 valve per
cylinder resulted in the injector being placed between the camshafts, so each
one is down in a hole (that is slightly deeper than the injector is long).

Draining said holes of accumulated diesel fuel is quite fun.

Wetness around the injectors is still likely to be bypass hoses, unless its
up around the nut, in which case the line should be disconnected/reconnected.

I believe that you need 2-3 meters of hose for the job, but I haven't done
it in a while. (I've got a gauge stick around somewhere though!)

The easiest way to get the exact lengths of the hoses is to look them up in
 the EPC.

Wetness around the delivery valves (on the injection pump, which is half
hiding under the intake manifold), is a whole separate ball of wax; that
will mean re-sealing the delivery valves (which is an annoying, fiddly job)

If you will be doing your own maintenance on the car, you might want to
leave the vertically-oriented bolt that goes through the tab on the charge
air pipe and a bracket before threading into the EGR valve out; it is a
MAJOR PITA to get to (there is not even a straight shot from below). You
may also want to keep a spare intake manifold gasket around.

BTW, I think there's a detailed write-up on the delivery valve reseal
floating around. The EPC does NOT list the seals at all for an OM606 of any
variant, but they are the same as the ones on an OM601/OM602/OM603.
Likewise, WIS does not list a job for re-sealing the valves; dealer
procedure is to replace the pump. (This is likely due to the fact that you
will have at least a 10% chance of one that needs to be re-done immediately
(which of course means the intake manifold has to come back off))

The best repair was taking the car to a local muffler shop, who welded the

IIRC Wiltons clamps are also made of aluminum.
Aluminum valley comes in a roll, isn't very expensive, and can be very
useful for a number of repair jobs. I once pop-riveted several layers of

It was still there several years later when I junked the car.

Nothing.

The problem was, the entire fleet sold only made a bit more than 50
airplanes. The certification of an all composite airplane had never been
done [Beech spent millions and millions getting past FAA] and the FAA has
no basis to establish service life on the composite parts, like wing spars,
for example. The requirement to continue to supply service and parts
exceeded the profit potential for the fleet, no new sales or production was
going to happen, so Beech did the only thing it could to save it's ass, it
bought them all back.

Short story, huge money involved, excellent aircraft, those who flew them
or owned them loved them. It's my information they are all setting stored

2013-05-05 Thread WILTON
Max, would you rather weld that joint? I noticed that slits have been cut
on opposite sides of the bigger pipe end. Of, course, each half of the pipe
end between the slits still has too much curve for them to squeeze inward a
bit to close the gap between bigger and smaller pipes, but if additional
slits were cut at 90° to the present slits and then again half way between
those new slits and the original ones, each tab would be only ~¾ inch wide
and would be flat enough to bend inward slightly and close the gap between
the 2 pipes for welding. 'Course, you'd then hafta weld the slits.

Does not one's local muffler shop have a machine that can expand the

to adapt a catalytic converter to a new application.

Yes, the goal was to weld all the joints, but we really needed a lift to get
enough clearance to install the entire assembly.

With the catalytic converter installed, it was too long to get the right angle
for the bends going from horizontal (pipes and converter under the car) to near
vertical (pipes going up to exhaust manifold). I was limited in how high I
could get the car by the jack stands I had. The pipes coming off the exhaust
manifold had to fit into a narrow area between firewall, steering gear, and
lower frame cross member. Hard for me to explain without a picture.

Re: [MBZ] W124 headlight bulb connector

2013-05-05 Thread Larry T

Hello --
My '91 300D did the same thing. I bought a used headlight wiring
thingie that was about 10 long with the headlight bulb connector on
one end and a plug on the other. I removed the bulb, unplugged the bad
harness and replaced it with the used harness in about 10 min. I think
I paid about $10 or less for my replacement harness.

I believe this is not a uncommon problem -- my headlight bulb
socket looked like it had melted - like cheese does - it took a
distorted shape that did not connect the bulb completely.

Maybe Kaleb has a used one? I bought mine from a small junk yard in
NC IIRC -

Good luck -

You can get them at NAPA. Whenever I did the relay modification and/or added
Euro headlights to a car, I always replaced the headlight lamp socket with
these. They are typically in stock at decent sized NAPA stores and used to be
about $4 each.

Be sure to get the heavy duty ones, as there are standard duty ones as well.
They have heavy duty sockets in just about any configuration you need. Here's
an example:

Common replacement item. The corrosion causes heating, which melts
the plastic.

Solder the new one in place -- they are readily available. DO NOT
just twist the wires together and tape, you will have fits with low
light output, bulb-out light on all the time, and missing beams.

[MBZ] 124 Cruise control

2013-05-05 Thread WILTON
OK, time to solve my '87 300D cruise control problem; it really got old on
right leg holding accelerator for long time on trip yesterday; if y'all have
any tips, I'll appreciate 'em.
For several years it has been hard getting it to engage; then, after getting it
to engage, it would hold for a while and finally drop out. Now, I can't get it
to engage at all. Amp or something else?
'EPC shows it on fuse # 5, 'seems to be OK; just noticed that stop lamps on
same fuse are working OK.

BTW, 11 to 12 years ago, before I found you guys, I bought a rebuilt unit for
my '81 300D from your buddy, Murphy in TN; still working well when I sold it
in '04.

Re: [MBZ] 1999 Mercedes E300 Turbodiesel Fuel Injector Leak Issues(UNCLASSIFIED)

2013-05-05 Thread clay
Topsider was used twice to do it at home. I finally just had my indy take care
of the issue and stopped running high BioD concentrations.

These engines are also known to weld in the #6 glow plug. I have had the head
off twice to get that dealt with in a decade. The first time was due to cross
threading, which repeated the error induced by the prior repair to that glow.
That was repaired and retapped, and for unknown reasons, maybe carbon, it
sealed itself in again. Past January the car was in the shop for three dead
glow plugs (and #6 had failed) so they all came out with the head having to
come off and more tapping and the admonition that the GP should probably be
tweaked once a year to keep it free. New exhaust manifold gasket each time.

 Issues(UNCLASSIFIED)

Wetness around the injectors is still likely to be bypass hoses, unless its
up around the nut, in which case the line should be
 disconnected/reconnected.

The EPC does NOT list the seals at all for an OM606 of
any variant, but they are the same as the ones on an OM601/OM602/OM603.
Likewise, WIS does not list a job for re-sealing the valves; dealer
procedure is to replace the pump. (This is likely due to the fact that you
will have at least a 10% chance of one that needs to be re-done immediately
(which of course means the intake manifold has to come back off))

Three weak points:

Amplifier, usually cured by stripping off the waterproofing,
resoldering, and re-shellacking.

Speed sensor in the speedo head. If this is bad, usually the exterior
temp gauge sticks since on 87 and later models it locks when
standing to prevent heat from the radiator screwing up the reading.

Bad switch.

Usual problem is the amplifier, but I have a dead sensor on at least

Re: [MBZ] OT: Speeding and revenue

2013-05-05 Thread Larry T
IMO the progressive tax code should be illegal. Just because someone
is wealthy is no reason to tax them at a higher rate. Actually the tax
codes as sold to the public just before 1916 was said to only apply
to the very wealthy. You can see how long that lasted. It's always
easier to point to the rich guys (who are always fewer in number than
the masses) and convince those with less finances how evil the wealthy
are for no other reason than they have more money. Tax rates and
ticket costs should be the same for everyone. Just because the
socialist in Europe are doing it doesn't mean it's right.

Just because the wealthy have more money doesn't mean they should spend
more on the government and all the stupid things they like to spend our
taxes on. The government does so many things they have no business
doing it's no wonder we're trillions in debt. Things like peanut
allotments which do nothing but keep prices high, cotton and diary
products get the same treatment. The govt is tossing suply and demand
in order to manage production. And in return those industries
donate huge dollars to get the people elected who will continue these
and other practices.

Back to progressive laws that punish the wealthy more than others.
There is no reason to tax the rich at higher rates than everyone else.
So there :-P

Hi All.
I always wondered what happened to them. IIRC, they had amazing
performance.

The FAA exhibits monarch type legislative oversight - likely rightfully
so. The FAA is responsible for a large number of airplanes and by
extension, passengers.Back when I was taking flying lessons i was
always amazed at the extent of thought they put into the legislation..
Of course the need is obvious.

Of course, 30+ years ago things were a little simpler with fewer space
age materials available to the general public.I would think the F1
racing experience would help the Starship get farther along the
legislative trail. They use composites for everything except engine and
trans blocks I believe. Of course there are some internal parts
engine/tranny parts
that do not lend themselves to composites. But the technology has been
well documented and tested - of course, getting the various groups to
release proprietary information may be a tough row to hoe.

Hopefully, sometime in the future, we'll see further acceptance in the
General Aviation market.

what's in it. Give me a break. puulease.

one more thing on taxes and I'll stop - Everyone uses the
infrastructure. Everyone enjoys the protection of the military. with
those 2 things in mind, everyone should share in the expense - which I
believe a National Sales Tax or Flat tax would do - no deductions, etc.
While the real estate PAC's (as well as others) will wring their hands
and say people will no longer be able to afford homes, but imo the pacs
would better use their time to educate prospective buyers by telling
them they'll be paying less overall taxes so they'll be better to afford
higher payments. Along with repealing the 16th Amendment, the states
should follow suit and repeal all taxes except for a statewide sales tax
- no more Personal Property tax, real estate tax, auto tax, gas tax,
tolls, etc. -- there are so many embedded taxes we cannot possible keep
them all straight. The tax situation in this country (and others too
I am sure) is so muddled as to be completely impossible to decipher.

[MBZ] Cabin crew fly plane while captain snoozes in business class

2013-05-05 Thread Gerry Archer
Two pilots with Air India have been suspended after they caused a
near-disaster by allowing members of the cabin crew to fly their jet for 40
minutes while one took a toilet break - and the captain went for a snooze in
business class.
The pilots were forced to dash back into the cockpit after the female cabin
crew disconnected the auto-pilot in mid flight.
incident is reported to have happened as the Air India Airbus 321 flew from
Bangkok to New Delhi on April 12.
According to reports, the near-disaster happened at 33,000 feet. Thirty
minutes after take of from Bangkok, the plane's first officer asked a
stewardess to sit in his seat while he took a toilet break. Minutes later
the captain invited a second cabin crew member in to the cockpit while he
went for a sleep in business class.
The pilots were forced to rush back to the cockpit after one of the women
accidentally disengaged the auto pilot. The scene was witnessed by a member
of Air India's management, who reported the incident. The pilots and the
cabin crew have now been suspended, Air India told local media.

The flight had 166 passengers on board.

Are modern jets physically designed to more or less maintain level flight if
the autopilot is disconnected and there are no control inputs? I seem to
remember that some singles advertised that capability years ago.

Dan

NO! A VAT is insidious. VAT is added every time a raw material,
part or component is handled. A flat tax on income is direct and
understandable. A tax on retail sales is also direct and
understandable.

VAT greatly favors vertically integrated companies., as they start
with raw ingredients and if they sell directly at retail, there are
only two VATs on the finished product, on raw materials, and again on
the retail sale. Take an auto for example. Many tiers of suppliers,
each with several levels of VAT. The VAT becomes a MAJOR component
of the retail price.

VAT sucks bigtime. It is a big reason why you don't buy a lot of
products from UK and former crown colonies, who nearly all have VAT
taxes, driving up prices. Is this why Hendrik has to pay obnoxious
prices for parts?

According to reports, the near-disaster happened at 33,000 feet.
Thirty minutes after take of from Bangkok, the plane's first officer
asked a stewardess to sit in his seat while he took a toilet break.
Minutes later the captain invited a second cabin crew member in to

The pilots were forced to rush back to the cockpit after one of the

Are modern jets physically designed to more or less maintain level

BuyMBParts.biz is Trent, formerly Rusty.

BuyEuroParts.com is Hursty.

Both websites, AFAIK, are just the online WorldPac catalog, which is not

Re: [MBZ] W124 headlight bulb connector

2013-05-05 Thread OK Don
True, for the most part. Solder beyond the connector (in the wire) can
cause the flexing from vibration to work harden the wire at the end of the
solder, resulting in a break. IF you can keep the solder within the
connector/crimp area and NOT wick any past that point, you will have a
better electrical connection at no increased risk.
The plastic insulator beyond the metal crimp is also a support for
controlling where/how much the wire flexes. It is often supplimented with
varying sizes and lengths of heat shrink tubing.
Some connections, inside a DB25 for example, about HAVE to be soldered.
