Yes, a recruiter from Halliburton for a job in Duncan, OK. He called me
back on Monday, 17 June, saying the position in Houston for which I had
applied was filled internally, but he had a position in Duncan. He said
positions in Duncan were hard to fill. Since I had never heard of Duncan,
I told him I would check it out and call him back that evening before he
left work (20 minutes later) or the following day. That's when I posted
the question about Duncan to the list.

I called him back the following day (Tuesday, 18 June) as I had said I
would and left a voicemail message about the position. I then called him
back Wednesday morning and left a message. I then called him back
Wednesday afternoon and left a message. I then sent a connection request
on LinkedIn (he's a LION -- LinkedIn Open Networker, meaning he accepts
all connection requests) and he accepted it. I then sent him a note on
LinkedIn saying, "Thank you for the connection. I appreciate your work on
my behalf." I have heard nothing back from him. I have called him more
since then. I have thought of calling him on Monday and saying how
disappointed I am that he suggested Duncan, OK, and that I haven't heard
from him for more a week. There has been some discussion on LinkedIn
under J.T. O'Donnell's writings about recruiters and what low-lifes they
are. I would think a company employee, recruiting for his company, would
be different, but apparently not.

The interview with Houghton College today went well. I did not feel
pressured or at a loss for words for the answers to any of the questions
they asked. I was able to ask several of my own questions.

In the first part of the interview, I was asked to describe myself. I
said, among other things, that I was very hands-on oriented and that I
was proficient at using machine equipment. Later, after I had asked what
the physics department's plans for the next several years were, among
other things like recalling the department's history, the Chairman said
they had a strong emphasis on hands-on and teaching the students how to
do things through real-world research.

That sounded promising. One thing about which I was disappointed was
that, since the start date of the position is in January and since the
faculty will be going to various universities and laboratories for the
summer to participate in research collaborations with some of their
students, the department won't resume their selection process until
September, with on-campus visits in September and October.

Thanks for asking, Dan.

I made a "tool" to replace the bushings with a nut for electrical conduit
(metal), a bolt, large washer, and nut to pull the grommet into place.
Worked great - the hardest part was finding it again when I bought yet
another car that needed these bushings (all of the MBs I've bought with the
exception of the ML have needed them).

[MBZ] W116 water leaks

2013-06-29 Thread Allan Streib
I've asked about this on the list before but absolutely cannot find the
thread.

My W116 ('79 300SD) accumulates water on drivers side floor. I have
traced the water infiltration from up under the dash, so I think it's
either front window seal or rusted fresh air intake cowl. I suspect the
latter. If I remove the wiper arms and the anodized aluminum trim
cover, will I have enough access to try to apply sealant or some other
repair?

It's been a long time since I did one of these but there is a flat metal
lever (with a hole) at the bottom of the shifter and a similar lever on
the

transmission. Each of these holes has a nylon grommet to prevent "buzz"
between the levers and the round-ended shaft that connects the two levers.
Also, there is a metal clip on each end of those round shaft ends to hold
the shaft in the grommets. If the grommets are worn or missing that
allows

a lot of free play between the shifter and the transmission and that can
effect shifting as well as the neutral safety switch (which is located on
the transmission on the same shaft as the above-mentioned lever.

I would order a pair and a spare of both the nylon grommets and the metal
clips before starting the job of replacing the nylon grommets. I have
done

it with the car (82 300SD and 79 TD) on jack stands but it wasn't fun. I
did not have a special tool. I seem to recall warming the grommets to
make
them more pliable. I also recall losing a spring clip (or two) when it
shot

off into "who knows where."

Also, the shifter moves forward and aft on a shaft supported bu nylon
bushings on each end and sometimes these wear out. These can be replaced
from above but you have to remove the center console first. If you
disassemble the shifter from above, you can pull put the shifter and
replace

that grommet from above too.

If it's a Canadian model I think there would be no problem to bring it in.
In '98 I brought in a Canadian '80 Volvo 240. US Customs gave me a piece of
paper with appropriate rubber stamps and waved me through. It took about 10
minutes.

I was able to register it in WA with no problem. The US made Suburban that I
had brought into Canada with me 5 years earlier was a different story. WA
DOL wanted Customs clearance on it (who knew?). I guess they thought it
might have become naturalized during all that time in Canada.

+25 years relaxes a lot of import standards.
If it's a Canadian model, I wonder if anybody would bother to check what

It's been a long time since I did one of these but there is a flat metal
lever (with a hole) at the bottom of the shifter and a similar lever on the
transmission. Each of these holes has a nylon grommet to prevent "buzz"
between the levers and the round-ended shaft that connects the two levers.
Also, there is a metal clip on each end of those round shaft ends to hold
the shaft in the grommets. If the grommets are worn or missing that allows
a lot of free play between the shifter and the transmission and that can
effect shifting as well as the neutral safety switch (which is located on

I would order a pair and a spare of both the nylon grommets and the metal
clips before starting the job of replacing the nylon grommets. I have done
it with the car (82 300SD and 79 TD) on jack stands but it wasn't fun. I
did not have a special tool. I seem to recall warming the grommets to make
them more pliable. I also recall losing a spring clip (or two) when it shot
off into "who knows where."

Also, the shifter moves forward and aft on a shaft supported bu nylon
bushings on each end and sometimes these wear out. These can be replaced
from above but you have to remove the center console first. If you
disassemble the shifter from above, you can pull put the shifter and replace

$13,000?

Seems like it might be a little anemic since it's got all that final drive
stuff and the 617 is normally aspirated.

My first MB was a 79 300TD, and it had a hard time getting out of its own way
under certain circumstances.

It is very nice, however. Not sure how you would import it, though.

2013-06-29 Thread Dan Penoff
Having painted a 123 wagon using a third generation German whose
great-grandfather started out painting carriages, I can tell you that it is
easy to do a lousy job on this body style.

One of the worst parts is removing the luggage rack, as MB didn't intend for it
to be removed, at least not from what I experienced. I took everything off
that car before it went to him, even the drip rail and window trim moldings.

If you look on my MB page http://penoff.com/Penoff.com/Mercedes.html you can
see what my 123 wagon looked like when it was done. Lousy picture, but it
gives you an idea.

Same guy did the 71 VW convertible in the lower left corner. He only had 300
hours in it when it was done (complete pan off restoration of the body. Very,
very difficult with a convertible body due to the lack of a roof.) You could
fall into the finish on that car. Six coats of hand rubbed clear over the
orange base coat.

The two symptoms suggest the shifter bushings or adjustment, the former
because the neutral-lockout switch wasn't being put in the right
position, the latter because the transmission's lever wasn't placed
 where
 it should have been.

When you have the problem, have someone crawl under the car and wiggle
the transmission's lever to see if it will move to the correct position.

Since this problem started with the installation of another IP, and
persists with a second IP, I would be very suspicious of the installer -
doing the same thing twice and expecting a different result! Now, it is
possible that you have two defective IPs, I've had that with alternators
from FLAPS, but used Bosch IPs don't usually give that kind of trouble. I
like the suggestion of checking the timing with the drip tube!

THe ALDA, injectors, etc. did not "go bad" just when you changed the IP. It
about has to be IP timing.

No, cheap cars are like that. We had a similar symptom in the Plymouth van
- the fan solid state relay burnt out, so no fan, thus over heating when
off the highway. I replaced the relay and wired in a 12v LED to monitor fan
operation. Of course, it never failed again, but I could watch the fan turn

Selling a car with a fresh quality paint job is rarely a good idea, as the paint
job usually costs more than the value it adds to the car. However, if you have
it repainted and can't stand to look at it afterward, that might be a reason to

The two symptoms suggest the shifter bushings or adjustment, the former
because the neutral-lockout switch wasn't being put in the right

When you have the problem, have someone crawl under the car and wiggle

May never happen. Subarus always seem to get a little worse mileage than
same-size cars from other makes, I assume because of the four-wheel-drive
hardware and accompanying lower final drive ratios they use.

I think the reason given for why they backed out from selling cars with the
new diesel engine in the USA was the usual--our screwy emissions laws,
especially in California.

'Zackly. 'Course, as I've said before, my job kept me extremely busy (no

looking for other stuff to do, too. I should say, too, that my job had me
in a position where I could easily find "other" things to do, places to go,
etc. Moss didn't have a chance with me in Greenland. There were many rare
and interesting things to see and do all around us. Another thing that
worked well for me was changing base/group commanders about half way into my
year; second one had no knowledge of what I had already done or where I'd
been before he got there - made it easier to go somewhere else. Once when
second one began to question why I was going somewhere else so soon after I
had gotten back from previous trip, I responded, "Just doing my duty, and
you KNOW I'm gonna DO my duty - please, just sign, I need to be on the way."
;<)
I'm sure I would have felt differently about it if I'd been "stuck" right
there on base. In effort not to make others jealous or feel bad, I never
bragged - never mentioned it - to others about where I'd been or what I'd
seen. Many never knew I'd been anywhere else.
Other than having to be away from my family, it was most enjoyable
assignment I had in 22 years on active duty. The integrity, dedication and
agreeable nature of the people working for/with me had a lot to to with
that, too.

Re: [MBZ] Black smoke and loping at idle.

2013-06-29 Thread Michael Canfield
Mike,
Sounds like the ALDA is doing it's job.

What timing method is the mechanic using?

I would seriously do a Diesel-Purge treatment before adjusting anything. I
would think that both pumps could be gummed up after setting for a couple
years. Are you 100% sure you don't have a bad rubber fuel line sucking in
air somewhere? Air can make all sorts of wierd stuff happen.

I thought I had a bad injector pump once...poured water over it and it
ran better. Noticed I did not see fuel movement in the filter nor any
pulses in the cigar tube. Changed out the lift pump and it was way
better. Was back to acting up in a few days but water did not seem to have
any effect any more. Noticed a couple air bubbles in the filter so got to
checking lines. The rubber was cracked inside, lengthwise, so it was
letting in a bit of air. Fixed that with new line and all better. Een
good so far.

Peter & Others,
Thank you all for the information and ideas.
I changed out the injectors last night and it made no difference at all. I did
adjust the alda all the way closed and the car would not idle or achieve and
rpm 2500 and was not drivable. When I moved it back out (ccw) it would run and
it returned to the normal terrible running status we have been battling since
the new used injection pump was in installed. I was then called to dinner. I
plan on changing out the alda with one that is unmolested (thanks Mitch) on
Sunday.
Is there a good write up on how to check to see where I stand on this issue.
I have never adjusted the timing and do not intend to try to change it. I plan
on taking it back into the mechanic on Monday and trying a few adjustments.

Thanks
Mike
p.s. I fried the alternator in my 78 MGB yesterday when I jumped it after
leaving the lights on. I inadvertently hooked up cables up backwards and
shorted it out. (Yes, I know better) I am not having much luck with my cars
lately.

Re: [MBZ] OT Honda overheating and a question about a tool

2013-06-29 Thread Jaime Kopchinski
It's possible the gauge is actually a fancy idiot light. That is, it stays in
the middle after normal operating temperature is reached and doesn't
increase anymore until some defined "too hot" point is reached.

For example, it may read like a gauge between cold and 80C. Then it sits in
the middle of the range without moving for normal operating temps, like
80-110C. And above 110, it shoots up to alert the driver.

In other words, it might not only be a problem after getting off the
highway, but this is the worse case for a cooling system, so the temp rises
about the threshold and the gauge jumps.

Modern cars are funny like that.

the health, welfare, and safety of their constituents? Say it isn't so...

In the past Big Drug has had at least one lobbyist for each senator and
representative.

Not sure how many since Obamacare.

Re: [MBZ] OT Fundraising......Monsanto Sucks!

2013-06-29 Thread Gerry Archer
No one knows what the outcome will be, but I question the addition of the
pyrethrin (natural insecticide) genes to various foods. Are pyrethrins
taken orally less harmful than insecticides applied externally to the
growing plants? The advanced techniques for creating such strange new foods
will probably result in one or more human disasters eventually.

When the Smart came out with its poor numbers, and a Mercedes built car

Re: [MBZ] OT Honda overheating and a question about a tool

2013-06-29 Thread Gerry Archer

From: "Randy Bennell"
My younger son's girlfriend has a 2000 Honda Civic that is doing things
that suggest overheating but I am not convinced.
It seems to only happen when she has made a highway run and then slows as
she comes into an urban area. The temperature gauge will shoot up.
Neither he nor I has been there when it happened, so we don't know the
whole story.
I am suspecting that it is just the temperature gauge acting a bit strange
and that the engine is not actually getting hot.

She says the car does not act odd. It just displays high on the gauge.

Tom is a mechanic and he finds this frustrating because she is unable to
help with the diagnosis. We don't think it is pushing the coolant out.
There is a catch tank of course, so once it cools it might pull it back in
if it is.
He changed the thermostat last weekend thinking that it might be hanging
up. Last night, she experienced the same thing so that does not appear to
have helped.

The car is an automatic with air conditioning and it is warm here now so
she is running the ac. One would think however, that it would be fine on
the highway and exhibit issues in town if it was overheating.
She drove it home through city traffic yesterday when it was 32 Degrees C
(about 90 Degrees F) with the ac on and it apparently was fine. Later that
evening she drove 30 miles out of the city to visit a friend and the
needle jumped up when she got to the small town where the friend lives. I
assume she would have driven it at 100 to 115 kph on the way which would
be 60 to 70 mph.

The rad does not look plugged up - not full of bugs and leaves on the
exterior. One can see the coolant flow with the cap off. The electric fan
seems to be coming on when it should etc.

Coolant is a good mix and not just water etc.

Any thoughts on something we might be missing?

2nd part of the question - a temperature gun. Anyone have experience with
them? Is it worth buying a "good one" rather than just whatever? I
suggested we get one and my son who has good taste in tools wants to get a
Snap On for a couple of hundred $ rather than a Chinese whatever from the
local version of HF.
We think that may be the best way to check to see if it is getting hotter
than it should.

Randy

Having her stop, leave everything running, open the hood, and see if the
fan(s) is/are running. That was a similar problem on both of my Mercedes on
two occasions.
